I had a similar injury ... On December 25, 2021 I was out taking photos in the snow and I slipped and broke both my tibia and fibula vertically. Thankfully had surgery the same night as the injury. The iWalk 3.0 was a godsend! I wore that thing anytime I was vertical and ... Maybe I just practiced a bunch, but I found it SO MUCH faster than crutches ... And usually safer too! (IE: climbing or descending stairs)
Of course, at least once a day I'd get tired and not lift my leg high enough, the vibram would skid on the ground and I'd be thrown into one of those slow-motion falling scenes where arms would fly and I'd ALMOST hit the ground ... (thankfully never did!)
Heal well, brother, and keep moving . . The only thing that helped me recover as well as I did was by staying on the go as soon as I could after surgery!
Thanks for your story and thanks for the encouragement. I'm curious, did you have a walking boot after the cast and for how long. And was a difficult to start riding again or could start right away?
Watching at 1.5x speed is perfect. Gosh I thought you were a peg leg with that thumbnail! The iwalk thing is pretty ingenious though.
Hi, I'm a new rider here (3 months). I'm really sorry to see this happen to you, and I hope you recover soon. Sometimes, I wonder when my first really bad crash will be. As my confidence grows, so does my willingness to push my limits farther out. My friends and family all think I'm nuts for getting into something like this at 50, but I still feel that it's something that I need to do. I hope you're able to get back at it very soon.
This resonates with me. I did finally have a bad wipeout a few months ago. If you don't like having to heal, then wear quality protective gear and NEVER skip a single piece of gear. Especially the boots... Ankle injuries are the most common for EUC drivers. I never drive mine without motorcross boots.
Nice to hear news about your recovering! I've looked for your channel today earlier to see how you are, so, I'm happy with your positivity. Keep on move!
I broke my ankle this past May riding my Master. The recovery is quite the journey, I feel your pain. However, 3 months later I'm back to walking in shoes. Can't wait to start riding again. Wishing you a quick recovery Marty!
Sorry for your injury but encouraging regarding 3-months. How did you break yours exactly?
Took a tumble after some wobbles. Master twisted to the left with my left leg still in the side pad, the rest of my body fell forward.... and the rest was history. @@ElectricUnicycles
Where there's a will, there's a way! My Monster Pro just arrived with our household belongings from Hawaii. I took a quick spin around the block and was considering riding to work this morning, but my protection is still packed. And after watching this video I'm not going to risk it. Heal up!
Thanks Shane and welcome back
Get well soon Marty! Glad to see the community doing cool things like sending out that awesome scooter. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Nice to see you still kicking. Wish you fast recovery, we miss your mountain riding videos. Respect and hat off for the 3-4 guys you mention, who helped that triple-unicycle contraption ride its way to you. You said 15 miles per charge? well... in about 820 charges we can meet each-other... piece of cake...
Wow, I haven’t been keeping up with the euc community for months - didn’t expect this to happen to you due to your safety minded attitude but this is why I don’t trust Begode. I hope all that follow you learn and self evaluate about how quickly things happen (instant!) . Thanks again for all you do - we all owe you an immense debt. I know that we all are hoping that you have a speedy recovery! I love how you are going ahead with your October ride plans!
Thanks Ted
Glad your doing ok Marty! Amazing to see the community sent tools to help you with your recovery! Cheers!!
Cody here :). Awesome vid!! I've broken quite a few bones (sitting here with a broken collar bone now lol) so I def know how stir crazy it gets. So the injury I had was a torn ACL from traditional unicycles that actually led me into EUC. I had to redo the meniscus part of the surgery from a car accident and wasn't allowed to put any weight on that leg for 8 weeks
Super glad I could help my man! We are will ride together soon when we're both healed up!
I just heard through the grapevine that you broke your collarbone. Really sorry to hear this. On a positive note, I think that heals quicker then the knee/leg 🙂
Take care, and thanks again 👊
So happy you are doing better! Once you get to the walking boot part you will be amazed how well you can actually move around with it on. I never really had to use crutches to supplement the walking boot. Looking forward to your triumphant return to the EUC!
I used an iWalk back when I broke my foot. I called it my peg leg. It worked well for me, as I have stairways in my house and no live-in helpers. When I wasn't using that, I'd just use the knee scooter for quick things.
Get well soon. Good to see you getting around. Hope the storm and earthquake were not too bad on you.
Still on wheels though, nothing slows you down brother !! 😅hope you get well ❤️🩹 sooner than later
I'm happy to see you're healing process is progressing and your spirits remain optimistic. When you do finally get back on the wheel, take it easy and be patient with yourself as you rebuild your abilities with your new muscles. Good luck to you!
Glad you are doing well, always appreciate your demeanor. I have hit the ground pretty hard, the last one made me question
my choice of riding an electric wheel. I have always considered riding the electric wheel a high risk activity
more so than any other activity where there is some risk of falling or injury. Safety equipment can prevent minor injury
discomfort but is not protection from all injury. Glad to see you posting content and the healing is progressing
in a positive direction, best regards.
Whenever we have an EUC fall we question the wisdom of riding. But time heals all and we remember how much fun they are to ride
@@ElectricUnicycles Thanks for the response, I agree, it is always a question of
risk vs reward
Glad to see your new video again. Get well soon.
Thanks for the health update. Keep your head up and your sense of humor 😀
Nice to see you're doing a little better. I wish you a quick and speedy recovery. We all appreciate all the advice you give.
Good luck Marty, and I hope to see you doing routes soon.
Good to see you Marty... greetings from down under
I tore my acl and meniscus on in June from a cutout on my brand new V12 HT. I only had about 200 miles ridden when it happened. had to wait 7 weeks until I got my surgery. The Doc said I can go back to riding jan next year at the latest, so I feel your pain. we'll be back on our wheels in no time, just have to focus on recovering for now. good luck on your recovery!
Wow, 7-weeks? Good luck with your recovery 👊
Wish you all the best Marty, love to watch your videos, regards from Germany.
Get well soon. Something similar happened to me from running to the car from the pizza shop to avoid the rain. After it got better if I would go on long walks the area would start to become swollen so it took about 1 year after I thought it was heald before I could go on long walks .
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought you finally decided to become a cyborg and embrace body modifications. The crutch-leg seems great, will keep that in mind.
Get well soon.
Less to go Marty, cheer up!!!
Wishing you a good safe recovery and nice success. Be well Marty from
Will and Mr Data :):]
Thanks for sharing an another part of the EUC life. ❤
👍🏾 Looks like you got a whole bunch of transportation options. Very impressive Marty!
I remember my tib/fib I was waiting tables a couple months afterwards, and walking fine. I remember going on a mountain bike weekend about five months afterwards. I put my ice skates back on at eight months, but I didn't start playing hockey again until about ten months. I was still a youngster then though. I imagine it wouldn't be that much different. I am five months after a recent elbow injury. I am still feeling some weakness. It was tough getting started back. PTSD is a thing. Now, not much trepidation, but I am riding my suspension wheel more than anything. Many people who don't ride don't understand why I still want to.
Thanks for the inspiration
Fast recovery, Marty. I had back to back surgeries this summer and wasn't able to ride for awhile. I was amazed how weak my EUC muscles got in 6 weeks. Kind of painful, but mostly just sore as all hell for about a month. I'm 64 and never broken a bone; not that I haven't tried all my life. (knock on wood) My worst injuries on PEV's has been the Onewheel; easy to learn, easy to injure, in my opinion. 3 years in and never crashed on pavement on the EUC yet. (knock on more wood) Cheers.
Good to know you’re doing better and healing. Appreciate the informative videos. Hopefully in a few months you’ll be back up and riding again.
Good to hear that you're recovering & hope to see you during the Cali tour.
Good to hear your recovery is going well. As someone has mentioned before “it’s hard to keep a good man down!”
It’s now your ability to visualize your movements on an EUC again and I like how your already mentally raring to get back on the horse (EUC) by showing your SherMax as the horse you’ll be jump’n on👍🏽
Keep up the positive spirit and look’n forward to doing some miles with you again🤙🏽🎉🙌🏽
Thanks Victor!
I have one barely functioning leg since birth - i can't stand on its own, it gets tired constantly etc. etc. Yet i'm riding EUCs just fine even if my leg is just a little more than a pirate pegleg.
Can't jump up the curbs but i never really gave any effort to learn that really.
So, i'd imagine that you would be able to ride EUCs even using that iWalk contraption (not that i advice doing that, obviously), not to mention when the casts will be off.
Thanks for the inspiration 👊
You will be back
You have the fighting spirit
Make a video of the “re-learning”
You look so much happier then the last video. Good to see! / Inspired by you, I took a spill on Tuesday. only going 26mph and it was total operator error. Was looking at my phone. I never do that when at speed. Not a scratch on me, only a knarly swollen knee but it's already healing. My MSP on the other hand went right into a cement pillar and crocked 1/2 way open. Eeeeek! Looks like my suspension wheel is coming sooner than later. Be well buddy! Nick
Thanks. You're going to love suspension 🙂
U will be back stronger than ever.❤
Marty get well sooner. Check out Roger riding the A2 around his wet neighborhood. I bought an A2 but have the knobby tire.
been there! heal soon! broken ankles suck!
Invaluable. Thanks for demonstrating your recovery equipment. I’d be interested in the physical therapy progress as well.
I’m hopeful that EUCs will advance faster than my need for ambulatory assistance… so far, so good.
If we survive all the falls, our proprioception will be excellent even after senility sets in.
My neighbor, back in the day, was a daily manual unicycle rider and rode until he was 85 (twice a week just before retiring his wheel). His mind left reality 10 years earlier but his body kept balancing until until death, which sounds good to me.
Glad to you out and about. Glad you are ok.
I've seen people roll up bath towels and duct tape them to the top of the crutches so it hurts less.
Hi Marty, great to see you are up and about. I can't believe it's been as long as it has. Watching this video is like watching an amalgamation of some of your other wheel reviews only now it's rehab equipment. I hope you aren't like the amazing Karnak and predicting that some of the riders are going to have to use this equipment someday, but you are probably right. Hopefully you get well soon and it sounds like you're on the right track.
Eventually the reaper gets us all, LOL
@@ElectricUnicycles Lol
Marty, glad to see you are doing great. The wife and I were just in LA. Stayed a few days in La Verne. Took my wife up Mt. Baldy Road.. had to show her the mountain!
Good to see you are recovering well!
Thanks for the update, Marty. So glad your recovery is going well. I miss your riding adventure video's.
I never knew you were such a madman with all those injuries. 👊
LOL - thanks Jose 🙂
Great to see you getting better, slowly but steadily. 👍 Been through braking bones a few times myself, thought broken ribs was pretty nasty with breathing hurting, but sofar nothing that major trauma to limbs…knock on wood. Haven’t broken bones on my EUCs sofar, hopefully will not. I’m positive you’ll be back riding in due time👍
Thanks 👍
Hey, get better Marty, the positive part of all this off-wheels-vacation thing is that you can feel once how's that to be a one-legged pirate. Ahoy! :).
Looking forward to a range test on your new Wheels:-)😁
nice to see
you have the moral👌🏻
i make you feel better i be all pissed off soon enough to see youre video riding when i be having snow storm in Canada😂
keep on the smile Marty😉
LOL
Some great thoughts and tips there Marty about when and when not to make decisions - Smart words, I hope the rest of the recovery is smooth and you can get back to it
It looks like the iWalk will work perfectly with an EUC! Good to see you acting more like yourself.
yay emotional and physical energy, hope you recover asap
I'm on 3 broken bones due to EUC now.. in ~10 years of riding.. which is maybe the same or better than my record from a lifetime of snowboarding. If you can get away with
Thanks Sam. Next time we ride together you'll have to regale me with your history of bone breaks LOL
@@ElectricUnicycles hopefully I'll see you the tour ... Although sadly you might not be riding 😢... Definitely keep to share war stories
@@SamClegg I'll be on the Tour and hopefully riding much of it.
Awww thats so freaking cute that little tricycle 👈🏻😃. 🦼🩼🦽. You are such a good spirit Marty 🤩😎
Nice to see you’re still positive. A Segway might be helpful with your I walk
Thanks. I wouldn't be caught dead on a Segway 😁
:)
As an RN and a rider, it’s good for people to know what can happen even when properly geared. You have thousands of miles on EUCs as well.
It sounded like you said you are healing up inmotionally.
Hey Marty... is the storm affecting you? I hope you are doing ok? Let us know if you have time please... and how Roger and Dawn are too... cheers from down under
The "storm" was greatly exaggerated by the news. Just a bunch of rain for us in Los Angeles :-).
Thanks
Like the old saying goes " You can't keep a good Man down"
So nice to see you in good spirits Marty. You should call out Roger to the iWalk Challenge, make him ride the A2 while being strapped into the iWalk lol. Also i was thinking you should make some videos while your at home, like reaction videos to euc content or something. Maybe show us a something you can build with all those tools in ur garage/shop, looks like you do carpentry or something. Carve out a euc replica, model of an euc %100 wood. Lol varnish it and everything, that would be pretty cool just as like a piece of art. Forget 3D printed 2inch eucs lol make a 2foot wooden, hand made euc.
LOL - good suggestions 🙂
Glad to see you in good spirits and good health, Marty. See you in October!
Eric? Thanks!
@@ElectricUnicycles yes sir. Currently riding Master Pro, Commander Pro, and mten4 this season. I’m hoping the waterproofing of A2 and Extreme becomes a trend for Begode, but I’m holding out until a waterproof 3600wh or greater. I’d also like to know the ankle slayer 5000 firmware has been identified and eliminated.
@@eheas320 Nice wheel selection. All the products continue to improve 👍
San Diego? Surf's up.
Broken ankle sucks; ribs/shoulders also suck. Glad your foot was generally intact.
I had an accident and didn't break my ankle or tib/fib (it looked like that was it but it wasn't) but instead it was found 5 miserable weeks later to be fractured cuboid/cuneiform, which is the tiny bones mid foot that everything basically runs around and through. I knew a guy snapped off both his legs' bones at the shins (water skiing accident, hit a dock) and he was only down 7 weeks (lucky he got clean breaks and no exposed bone).
Glad to hear it's going well, make sure to fully rehab and be careful - when you're splinted for a while it takes a bit of time for everything to loosen up again properly, speaking from quite a bit of crashes/accidents.
My motto, at age 56, is: *that which microfractures makes me stronger*
Thanks 🙏 and I like your motto 🙂
Get well soon brother❤
Hi Marty, get well soon from a French weeler, in Louisiana they say "don't let go of the potato", it means keep in shape and energy.
Thanks 🙂
Glad to see you recovering well. Thanks for sharing your experience. 👍
Hurry up buddy and get better lol I brought the mini bc of ur video had it for amonth or so still learning the wheel hope u make more video on the mini
I'm looking forward to riding my Mini again - October :-)
Where's the drone footage? Hang in there old man. You've got this.
Marty the pirate! you got this! :P
After this maybe look into dirtbike boots. They should help protecting your ankle/feet. I know they sell low profile ones if you don't like the stiffness of them. Good your doing well! Heal up and be good !
Thanks
thats a high seat on the Veteran, did u make that urself? When u busted ur ankle did u have a boot on or just some sneakers? Get well soon!
Miss you, Marty.
I have a dislocated ankle, mine was a onewheel accident, get well soon 😊
Thank you. Fortunate that you didn't break anything.
I damaged the tendon in my ankle 5 years ago. It took 3 years before I could walk any distance and 4 years before I got back on a wheel.
I just don’t feel the passion for riding that I used to have.
Glad to see you back up on your feet ….ooops I mean one foot 😂
How much longer can you hold out until you try to ride a wheel with the iWalk, Marty? 😁Get well soon!
I hope you are healing well marty! may you please post a link to that three wheeled wheelchair you are riding. i was looking to see if you already posted the name of the three wheeled low speed wheelchair but i didn’t locate the name of it.
I don't remember but I know I answered this question. Check the comments and/or video Description.
okay, thank you, i will look again.
also, arnica cream (cvs) can help reduce pain and increase the rate of the healing process and contributes to reducing inflammation. i use arnica cream every day on old injuries i accumulated over time. i also use redmond clay (also called bentonite clay) mixed with water into a paste, and apply to skin cuts or burns when needed, and to areas of injury, and wrapping with sandwich wrap to keep the clay from drying. the clay can also reduce inflammation, reduce pain, and help with healing. when in use, i apply the clay to area of pain, wrap the area with the sandwhich wrap (keeping clay moist, important) and i change once each day, allowing skin to air out/dry for an hour or two, before reapplying. the clay also reduces scaring as well.
Shame if they don't explain the crutches when they might think you're old enough to know. Nobody knows unless they tell us.
Those armpit pads are for controlling the aim of the crutch foot, NOT holding weight. they should ride up to an inch or two under the armpit. It should only be a workout for the muscles to hold your weight on the handles in your hand - not hard on the shoulders or armpit.
Best of luck on your recovery.
Oh, I know how to use crutches but it's hard not to distribute 'some' of the weight to the armpits. That's why they are covered with super soft foam.
Thanks 🙏
Woo hoo Marty is back all is well in the euc universe 😌😊👍👍
Sometimes i ride with motocross boots on, they would have prevented this injury. there are street motorcycle boots work too. too bad you got injured, couldn't imagine not riding euc. chooch did a video on riding gear.
Marty has done videos about safety gear as well.
Get better soon Marty! I'm also recovering from a euc accident. On 8-4-23 around 630pm. I was traveling east bond on Tomah ave on my 16x doing around 18 mph when a west bond truck turned left twards North York st in Porterville CA striking me with the front of their truck, causing me to go over the hood and I landed on the road next to the passenger side of the truck. The left side of my body is torn up, and my left knee, ankle, ribs, and spine still hurt a lot! My LCL in my left knee and something in my spine may be torn. due to my terrible health insurance their forcing me to wait over a month before they will do a mri. My wheel needs to be repaired or replaced, and I'm not sure where to take it if anyone has any advice?
Thanks, and I hope your injuries can heal without intervention. If you don't know anyone often you can find a dealer that will repair wheels, at a price.
I broke my leg on a 16x (well, shortly after coming off the 16x) after getting bad wobbles. Got a knee scooter similar to that, but I missed my motor so with an e skate motor, twist throttle, vesc and a 3D printed pulley I made a 25mph 2000w knee scooter lol
Biggest regret was not showing the doctor
Great story 😁
Hola Mark!! I thought it was an exoskeleton. I have plans to buy one when they go on sale. Do you know them? it's a small harness I send you a hug from Medellin. Thank you for all the questions you have ever answered me Que te mejores pronto!
Save some of that equipment, Roger may need some if he keeps riding thru hurricanes. Hope u heal soon.
Do you think your buddy can print me a leg rest like yours for the 3 wheel scooter? I would love to have one. Broke my ankle and just recently had my second surgery. Plates and screws on both sides. ThankS!
Sorry to hear of your injuries. Unfortunately he lives in another state. It really wasn't super form fitting so something could probably be rigged up with a bit of wood and foam.
Awesome! Thanks for the reply I'll look into it and see if I could modify something. Scooter should be here this week.. thanks again!
Wishing fast recovery. What three wheel electric vehicle did u ride in on sitting down in this video
Freegoev
And so goes the life of an electric unicycle test pilot.
slt marty bon rétablissement a bientot
Life is what happens as you make your plan's, shit happens. Things always come round, but you have to be patient and realistic. I always gear up even on the Ninebot One E+. I always think that one day I will keel over and I don't want people saying how well I looked, and how they never would have thought. Much better, he looked like he had had a hard life and I'm surprised he lasted that long 🙂 Having said that obviously it doesn't pay to be reckless, its funny how we take our mobility and general health for granted until its adversely effected. Exploring toys to make the best of the situation a great idea. Still room for some sketchy riding, letting the wife drive - don't tell her I said that. Glad you're on the mend, all the best, still tinkering in the workshop is good, should be a video there, no peace for the wicked 🙂.
Thanks 🙂🙏
@@ElectricUnicycles Your welcome, could be worse. You could be out riding in the rain in your underwear - see Roger for details 🙂
I dare you to wear your full gear, helmet and cape... and ride that thing to the shops haha
thanks for the update , get well . any update on A2? is it safe to buy?
They seem to be working fine for everybody else. I was just unlucky with a lemon
@@ElectricUnicycles
yea, i haven’t seen anybody else report on malfunction. get well soon , we missed your videos🤙
The real question is when you get back on an EUC which one are you going to trust enough to start back on?
As in I demonstrated in the video I'll be riding the Sherman Max
Ouch
I did not know you had an accident :/(
Keep on doing the videos
Focus on tech details!
Where can one buy that electric tricycle thing?
Marty, you talk about the scooter you are riding but you forget to say what it is. What brand and model?
FreegoEV
i found the model, freegoEV
From what I have heard age doesn't matter, you can build up bone with exercise.
Bro two days ago the same thing to my but my wheel didn't turn off, I was coming to a stop and hit a bump
Really sorry to hear that. Wish for the best recovery possible for you.
Was it because of the pads the foot got stuck?
No, I don't think the pads played a part but will really never know
Serious question Marty. Considering all the injuries you've accumulated over the years because of EUCs. Have you thought about maybe picking up a safer hobby like eBikes, or something else? I mean you obviously can't keep breaking bones and racking up injuries forever.
Forever is a long time. I think I have enough spare bones to last me the next 10 to 20 years of riding 🙂
Seriously
