- Dockyard Doris (Colin Devereaux) performs her act in the 1999 Summer Season at the Winter Gardens in Margate. This was Colin's only Summer Season - tragically, he died only 14 months later. He was on top form for this show, and was truly wonderful. Colin is remembered with love and affection by all those lucky enough to work with him, and by the many thousands he entertained.
I remember Colin from the Bull & Pump pub in Shoreditch, late 1980’s/early 1990s. Nice, down to earth man👍
How lovely to find this, A lovely guy, loved working with him. he sent me tickets every birthday to see him in Panto and i saw him in hospital. shortly before he died. So sad. I needed several large brandies after that visit. The funeral was amazing. Much missed by me.

I employed DD once. Walked in carrying two old tesco carrier bags demanding a pint of bitter. On stage he created and turned into a wonderful loud brassy drag queen. So much missed. Colin you were fabulous xx
Lovely to see this. My partner and I became friends with Colin in the last few years of his life. We used to go to Brighton to watch him in the pubs on Sunday lunchtimes. After one performance he came over and thanked us for actually looking and listening to him during the act, rather than talking and ignoring him, as was common in pubs. We became friends and went to shows like this and his pantomimes. We were invited to his 50th birthday party, he never made 51. It was such a shock.

GREAT! Many many thanks for sharing this. We used to go along to his local, the C&C pub, in shorditch on a Saturday night and laugh our socks off. Can/t believe it's 10 years ago since the great farewell of this very lovely East End entertainer.

Great entertainment! Saw Dockyard Doris on Colin's "home turf" at the Hackney Empire in the early `80s - top of the bill was the talented but ill-starred Joan Turner, who did a stand-up routine & sang the Brindisi from "La Traviata"! Sad when genuine entertainers like DD leave our midst.
She's fab.. Such a bleedin shame when they are taken away from us too soon. x

Although Colin died nearly 16 years ago, he is remembered in the dressing room with great fondness and lots of laughs. I still miss him terribly, but feel so lucky to have had him as a friend.
Tom Cooper I can't believe it's been that long, I remember the great performance at BMHS when he came through the audience as the Queen Mum, we also saw Shirley Temple and of course the great Sophie Tucker. Just fantastic. A one off.

Glad you liked it, Trevor. I think it does justice to the joy that was Dockyard Doris. In the ten years since Coin died, we have raised £150,000 in his memory for St Joaeph's Hospice where he was cared for at the end of his illness. Good wishes to you. Mickie.

As you were lucky enough to work with Colin, I'm sure you will have as many happy memories of him as I do. It's a wonderful legacy to have made to many people happy.
Thank you so much for sharing this Mickie. I was lucky enough to work with Colin at the Beefeater by the Tower and he was lovely. It always fun to watch foreign tourists struggle with Colin/Doris's innuendos. :-)
I had the pleasure of knowing Colin, personally. He gave me 2 great tips for life. "This isn't the dress rehearsal. It's the actual show!" and "When you're on your deathbed, it's what you haven't done that you'' regret. Not what you have". RIP Colin.

Fascinating to see this. That generation were the tail end of the old music hall acts and traditional drag artistes. Kids today just wouldn't get this or understand the historic significance. The old guys were able to ply their trade with basically the same act/jokes for years only slowly changing things over time. Once folks went on TV their act was blown and people expected a new routine/jokes every time they appeared. The old summer season variety shows were on there last legs by 1980. It all seems so simple and innocent. Sadly the traditional UK drag culture is being steamrolled by the giant machine that is RuPaul's Drag Race. Just type UK Drag into You Tune and see what you get. British drag culture has been almost obliterated overnight. So sad.
