  • Kung-Fu Master was the first beat 'em up game. It was the video game equivalent of Bruce Lee's Game of Death, and it was groundbreaking in 1984. It is cited as the inspiration for subsequent successes like Double Dragon, Final Fight, Captain Commando, and Streets of Rage.

One of many great arcade games from the mid 80s, the best era of the arcades. A time when if you was good you could spend hours on a game with just one coin. Towards the 90s regardless of skill, your game was over in a few minutes with a push towards continues where you was encouraged to shovel coins in.

People always like to cite Double Dragon as an impressive game and being one of the first beat em ups, but tbh, there's nothing impressive about it when it's running in low resolution and suffers from slowdown 24/7. This game has bigger sprites, more sprites, no slowdown and IS the first beat em up, and it came 3 years BEFORE Double Dragon!
Irem definitely have underappreciated developers for sure.

This arcade game was released in 1984, between the 1983 North American VG Crash and the year Nintendo of America released the NES. The NES version is the most recognizable, due to home-gaming being more convenient than arcade-gaming. A similar thing happened to Tecmo's Star Force, Namco's The Tower of Druaga and Nintendo's Punch-Out!! arcades.
