  • In this video I cut some Indiana geodes for my friend Pat. He found them this past summer and and asked me to cut them for him with our 16 inch Lortone lapidary saw. Let's see whats inside... Please visit my blog at www.mdpub.com for more information.

Hi Mike, Typical quartz geodes from that area. They usually won't polish. The sugar quartz keeps falling apart on the laps. Great idea with the wood block & hot glue! That black streak was most likely caused by a rock chip jamming the blade against that half for a minute or so until it was ejected. Great video! Thumbs up! Jim

I like the wood and glue method! Gonna use that myself

Very nice interiors on the bigger two. Wondering if a tile saw would work for the smaller ones. Configure something like a c-clamp to hold the small rocks if worried about having hands too close to the blade? Great video!

I spent an exhausting day mining geodes in Keokuk, Iowa (next to Hamilton, Indiana), about 25 years ago. It was a blast, got a 5 gallon bucket full of nice geodes of all sizes. I tried to get lightweight ones (mostly hollow), and I broke them open using a chisel instead of cutting them. Most were really nice "crystal caves".

You might want to check a map. Iowa and Indiana are NOT next to each other. There's a big state called Illinois between them! You might be thinking of Hannibal, Missouri.

OK, it's Hamilton Illinois. Close enough. 😁

I think that isopropyl alcohol will make hot glue release.

I am not a rock man but thinking some pieces of tire sidewalls would form to the rocks and hold them for cutting. Also disposable and there is an endless supply.

man the red color from the saw really ruins them.
