    From what I understand, "Play" was originally going to be an instrumental piece. However, Saiki, the singer, loved it and asked Miku to write lyrics for it.

      It was a instrumental used to play in concerts to give Saiki a break. She liked it so much she asked Miku to write lyrics for it, and the rest is history.

    Play was originally an instrumental but lyrics were added later on. That could be the reason you didn't "feel" it.

    The Bass Player MISA plays with a pick and slaps in the same song and changes from one to the other very quickly!
    From a radio interview - - (Chris): What amazed me most about your play style is the changing of picking to slapping, and then picking again so smoothly. Some bassists may throw their picks away to slap, but you use the same pick when you change from slapping to picking again, right?
    (Misa): No, I don't throw my pick away. I have become better as I practiced. For the recent 2-3 years, I haven't lost any pick.
    (Chris): Show me how.
    (Misa): I keep the pick with my index finger and palm.
    (Chris): Then you slap the bass with your thumb and middle finger? Can you show me how you play? (then Misa shows how)
    (Misa): Because I've been practicing these days, I can change faster than ever.
    (Chris): You are mixing them up! That's awesome!
    (Misa): I think anybody can do it if you practice.

    Another great, HONEST reaction, good on ya David! I was watching some of their concert videos that are captured from the fans and was struck by how, when ever Akane is going to solo, the other ladies will drop and kneel on the stage, helping to direct the audience's full attention to what Akane is doing on the drums, that's something I've never seen before. it might be something to look out for in future videos as it seems this sails under other ,ahem "reactor's" radar. Yours's are reactions I compare others to.

    As other people have already commented, this song was originally made as an instrumental one, but Saiki wanted to make it as a crowd participation song. So she asked Miku to write lyrics for it.
    Some people don't like about crowd's "la, la, la" part, but obviously the crowd at the Okyuji love it 😁😜😁 (P_O)🕊❣

    Misa is definitely one of the best bassists in the world right now, and probably will go down as one of the best ever. She actually used to be a session bassist before she was in Band-Maid. After three mini albums, she actually left the band for a few months to take lessons, even though she'd already been playing and recording for at least ten years already. She also refused to settle on the "Domination" album until the bass was absolutely perfect, Miku said Misa recorded the final bass tracks with gauze on her fingers because she'd run through the songs so many times, and that the FIRST TAKES were fine, but Misa wanted them PERFECT to herself.

    As a huge fan of this band i totally agree with you David. This song was great when i first started listening to them, it did a great job drawing me in to the band, but since then i have listened to most of their catalog and so many songs have surpassed this one for me. These girls write amazing music but this one is not one of their stronger songs if im honest.
    Either way 8.6 is a great score, no complaints here! As always If you need any Band Maid (or Lovebites) live video and you cant find it, let me know!

    Thanks always for your honest reaction. I actuality can relate to what you said to some extent.
    Many of my favorite band-maid songs weren't my favorite on first listen. There are bunch of songs I call 'ultimate growers'.
    With most other bands, if I don't like the sound of the song into half way through, I will never like the song. With band-maid songs, I always listen to the end (with proper headphones) and always find something interesting, transitions, riffs, cool bridges, drum rolls or extra bluesiness or funkiness... whatever they adopt somewhere in the song win me over most of the time.
    Most of their songs have the secret ingredients, leaving this nice aftertaste...irresistible aftertaste, for fans.

    Eventually, the Maids are gonna get ya on 95% of their songs, David! 😝 BTW - if you ever get a chance to see the ZEPP concert version of "Play", the one that was for some crazy reason taken down, check it out. it was 🔥, literally! Also, the view count is totally misleading as many views, millions in some cases, have disappeared with the takedowns and are also spread out over many YT sources and channels, etc.

    • @tombworld9012

      They took the Zepp version down because they wanted the Shibuya version to replace it as the official version. Other than the pyrotechnics, this version has everything the Zepp version had and more. But I will admit that the audio was better mixed on the Zepp version.

    • @TomClark-Futoura
      @TomClark-Futoura 3 года назад

      @@tombworld9012 MISA's intro bass solo on that version is one of her best. Kanami and Miku's vocals are way better mixed and I also preferred the overall ambience and stage setup, too. Just playing each back to back tells the story. BTW - I was just over at bilibili and someone posted an awesome 3 part medley that's so punchy it makes you wonder what B-M's audio tech's were thinking in all their post Zepp releases. • @cyberpotato63

    Never heard the term Noodle fest. I think you're right though. This started out as an instrumental only, "Look at what I can play" song to showcase talent. It went through a number of different iterations. Miku came up lyrics to make it a crowd response song. Saiki leads the crowd, and Miku's responses are designed to get the crowd to sing along. They played it at concerts for quite a while before finally putting it on an album. There are earlier versions of this with Misa getting into the slapping much more than this. I think they ran into some issues with her messing up her thumb on this a time or two, so they had to cut back on that. Misa's discipline on the slapping technique might have been won the hard way.

    • @jonasw3945
      @jonasw3945 3 года назад

      Don't think Misa had any problem with the slapping, she used to slapp harder on other songs even before this song and the change of the song is mainly about the intro which they changed in every tour they did

  • @Bodneyblue

    I don't think the fans worry about Saiki or any band member turning their back on them...Becuase when they are..it's because they are interacting with each other..and the fans love it!.....It's one of the things that make them so popular with their fans...the girls really have a friendship and comradery and it shows....Alot of band may be good musisians, but have no personality on stage...and play to get off the stage..where the Maids play to be ON stage....Long May They Reign.

      @@THEDavidHeretic As you can see my link has a timestamp attached to it and that is because the link goes to a full concert performed in Wacken, Germany in 2013 when they just had changed their singer. That video really is superior to must cut-out copies out there regarding video and sound quality.
      Any recording that was done before 2013 will not have Floor Jansen performing and then it will be up to your taste if you like it or not. Personally, I can't stand their first singer Tarja while others adore her. Their second singer Anette made no impact on me while their present singer Floor is like a god to me. 😄
      Just like The Warning, Nightwish is really a band you should watch live and I know that you will enjoy the crowd in my video and there is a guy with a hat in the middle of the song that *REALLY* stands out. 😂 Another similarity is the fan base. The Nightwish army is huge and just as in The Warning army there are some bad apples that can get overly protective. Still, this band is so great it will be worth any bad comments, and imagine being their bass player ( _who looks a little like you_ ) and perform in front of those +82 000 in the crowd. 🤘😎🤘

    "Is it necessary? No." But they did it anyway. That sums up Band-Maid for me. Every single song has several moments, little musical flourishes or ideas that really weren't necessary - the song was already good! - but they did it anyway. They don't hold back riffs or ideas for other songs, they try to make every song the best it can be. Another react channel (Chase Carneson) call their songwriting brave for that reason and I am inclined to agree.
    Anyway, great reaction, great explanation. I dunno if you've done anything off the new album? If not, try Warning!
