Brendan gleeson’s death scene was so sad and the character of Eccleston was such a good villain because he wasn’t a monster in appearance, he had differing ideologies that he saw as furthering the human race whereas others view it as violent and barbaric
they didn’t have the budget to use high quality cameras for the entire film. their budget was so low they couldn’t even get permits to shoot at certain places so they had to do it in secret.
The score is amazing in this movie!
Fuh real
Dude the killer klowns from outer space pfp is cool asf
One of the best scores I've ever heard in my life
John Murphy killed that score and made me a fan of his work
Zombie movies were not very intense before 28 Days Later. This flick and Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake re-defined the genre.
I've heard they started pre-production on 28 Months Later at the end of 2019.
I remember being a little kid and they had a big poster of it at our Regal Cinema and I was just fascinated about it. Seeing the guy standing alone at the desolated London and above him are two big and yellow eyes as well as that hazard symbol!
That part scares the shit outta me too where Jim goes into the church and the 2 zombies wake up in the crowd of corpses. 😬
Incredible filmmaking
“That was longer than a heartbeat”
One of the best parts of the movie lol I love how they end up together
Really tho, where is 28 months later!!! Lol
28 years later??
There's actually talk about a third movie due to recent articles, look into it 😁
28 years later wouldn't work.
@Cole REVIEWS it is??
@OGlettuceWEED wait where? Source?
Pre-production i think
I actually think the gritty feel of the equipment is fantastic... I feel it adds to the grittiness of the world they live in.. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I love it
I grew up with this movie and is in my top 3 zombie films...I know you and Lee prefer 28 weeks later, but I've never seen it. Heard some bad things about it so I never got around to it. But since you and Lee prefer that one I might as well but it and check it out. But back to 28 days later I've loved this movie since the very first time I watched it. Phenomenal groundbreaking film.
I actually like the grainy old school VHS style. IDK gives the movie a very different feel, and like it's much older than it actually is.
This was such a great 'zombie' movie Cody! You have the running 'zombies', excellent characters, and that awesome music. This is why I love the Dawn of the Dead remake because they got the idea of the running zombies from this movie. Nice to see you finally review this movie. Now, you have to do 28 Weeks Later.
Zombies? What are zombies? They’re infected people! (In my best tarantino Italian voice impersonation)
The Spanish film REC is also a fantastic zombie film. It is found footage but it actually works and is scary as fuck by the end. The last 20 mins or so are horribly terrifying but so good. Easily my third favourite movie of all time.
I'd seen Quarantine and enjoyed it
The main reason for the crappy look of the movie isn't that they used film, but rather, a shoddy digital camera (a Canon XL1 mini-DV camcorder which you can buy on Amazon today for about $399) and I agree, it does not hold up well, even with the Blu-Ray remaster.
Honestly, I wish they would've gone with 16mm footage like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer -- because it would've looked far grittier and held up way better in remastered editions, but I can understand why they didn't, this was a low-budget film at a time when older film was becoming increasingly rare and digital was becoming common place in Hollywood and would undoubtedbly be the cheaper option (allowing the film to place it's budget elsewhere -- such as clearing out large busy spaces in London -- something that also was very, very rushed so it likely wouldn't have been able to be done on film anyways when you account for setting up a six-camera shot), however, the use of digital footage did help improve the film in some places in terms of aesthetics, notice how the footage seems to get jumpy and speed up when the infected are in pursuit and slows down when we get close ups of their face to focus on their agonized and tortured expressions -- this because these parts were shot using the cameras feature to film at 1600fps -- which on film would only give a standard slo-motion effect, but on the digital camera made for a staccato effect it really doesnt seem like much on the surface, but it matters in the subconcious of the viewer and the scenes of the infected would have much less impact and tensity if they were shot normally and paced as such.
But to add onto that, the reason why the ending looks so good -- it wasn't the original ending, the original ending that was shown to test audiences had Jim dying on the table at the end of the film with Hannah and Selena walking off and was shot in the same DV aesthetic as the rest of the film, but test audiences responded negatively, prompting Boyle to do reshoots and give an upbeat ending (there were multiple endings in the production of the film and he seemed set on having a downer ending) he ultimately sympathized and agreed to do so, stating "we can't do this to people, because it was such a tough journey anyway." -- but the studio also seemed to back this decision and granted him enough money to shoot the final ending, with a fighter jet and on 35mm film to contrast with the rest of the films dark lo-fi handheld grit.
As for the reasoning behind the reinvention of the zombie and the creation of the infected in the first place, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland had discussed that they wanted to stray away from the idea of the typical zombie virus that attacks the victim physically and kills them and instead, focus on something that would attack a victim psychologically -- thus the concept of the "rage" virus, and the more you look at it from this angle, from the infected kid screaming "I hate you!" to Cillian Murphy's multi-layered shouts as he gnashes and attacks the soldier at the end, mirroring the infected -- the more distant this film becomes from other "fast zombie" films that followed. I mean, I think what gives 28 Days Later such staying power all these years later is the fact that it wasn't really trying to be a zombie film (but there is some argument to be made for homages to Day of the Dead), in fact, aside from the elements required of typical post-apocalypse fiction, it distances itself pretty firmly away from most of the zombie films that came before it, it's a heavily thematic social drama first more than anything, and the infected merely serve to establish the enviroment in the world that Boyle, MacDonald and Garland created, almost like a force instead of truly being the antagonists.
Yet, every time we see these characters bond and spend heartfelt moments together with colorful footage of smiling -- we're thereafter reminded that you're never truly safe in this world, and treated a visceral, terrifying pump of adrenaline, which is backed by harsh, filtered, desaturated images -- and then finally in between, subverted with the sombre, peaceful and almost beautiful shots of the films more melancholic scenes of empty city streets, dead bodies and landscapes free of humans that is almost always accompanied by a chilling composition (whether it be the Christian hymns of Abide By Me and Ave Maria -- or Brian Eno's haunting 'An Ending (Ascent)' and John Murphy's reconstruction of Mozart's 'Requiem in D Minor').
I thought the ending being shot on film was a nice touch thematically, since it was a hopeful scene and it abandoned the gritty aesthetic that was so pervasive in the rest of the film
You're correct. DV cameras were big at the time when the film came out. The changing evolution of these cameras over the years made them a thing in the past. Now its HD, 4K and all these fancy camera gadgets they are using.
Great comment 👏
Now theyre using iphone 15
Weird question but what’s your take on the bodies in the church? A) The zombies attacked during a service and it spread like it did in the room with Robert Carlisle in 28 weeks later, B) the bodies were disposed of and dumped in the church, C) Dawn of the dead style where they instinctively went there and died due to lack of food
P.S. 28 weeks later is also in my opinion the superior film
The idea of a monster/creature that can hunt by sound not by sight is terrifying
Thanks Cody ! Great stuff to see you doing my review request :D
Really cool that you love this movie as much as I do. Your review is spot on totally agree with all the positives and negative too (such a shame that it does not age well).
The only two things I would have added to the positives are: a) The soundtrack is totally awesome, I listen to it all the time. b) the way the movie introduces the virus in the first movie scene is I think super clever and pretty tensed, really liked it.
Allright Cody, so when are you reviewing 28 weeks later ? cause I also love this movie too. The first scene in the cottage is IMO the best ever zombie scene and really emotional.
Thanks man glad you enjoyed it. I'll probably review 28 Weeks within a month or so
Can't wait !
The fact that both Danny Boyle and Alex Garland consider this a zombir film is reason alone for me to put it in that sub genre
I really enjoyed 28 Days Later, and the sequel too!
I am not really into zombie films but 28 days was pretty awesome. My favorite hands down was the dawn of the dead remake. Great review Cody. Keep the videos coming buddy. Love love your channel
Didn’t even mention how amazing, eerie, and beautiful the score was is! Very good review, tho! Definitely changed the course of the zombie/epidemic genre 🙏
I friggin love this movie and I got the joy of discovering it back when video stores were still a thing :D I'd already liked zombies before but I wasn't really a fan of Romero's versions. I preferred The Return of the Living Dead series to his because they seemed like a more realistic threat. I get it: in the 60s and 70s, a small horde of shuffling dead people might take over a small town. But by the late 90s... it was getting old and irrelevant. Shaun of the Dead understood this: you'd have to be a complete idiot to die at the hands of these zombies. God bless Danny Boyle for bringing the infection aspect in there to spice these up and make zombies scary again.
As for the sequel, I didn't like 28 Weeks Later, at first. I wasn't a big fan of the family I was forced to follow and felt like the new outbreak was all their fault lol Eventually I developed a better appreciation for the film and the point of view it offers. It's really good and one of those great sequels no one ever mentions on their top ten sequel lists. Gun to my head, I'd still pick the first but that's because I love 28 Days Later so much I fuck it
28 Days/Weeks Later and Dawn of the Dead 2004 are in my top 3 favorite zombie movies
my sister had nightmares about it for weeks unlike me when I saw it left an impression on me the scene that got burned deep into my mind is that scene of the dead mother holding her dead child
I get your point with the whole humanity is the bigger threat in this one but I think you could make a decent argument for day of the dead being more bout that first
I remember very vividly seeing 28 Days Later when my siblings rented it once
They’re zombies just face it people.
Edit: also the way 28 days later was filmed and looks is the way I like it. I wish they’d film more Britain focused zombie movies like this.
Your channel is awesome. Keep up the good work Cody
Can't believe you are reviewing this now one of the best zombie movies of all time!
By the way did you get your awesome shirt from the horror show like me?
Sure did
Awesome review Cody, love both these movies & especially as I'm from the UK seeing Britain ravaged was brutal viewing especially the third act were a now lawless land has the soldiers run riot chilled the hell out of me.
I hope we get a final film to conclude the trilogy this horror franchise deserves it.
Another scary as fuck British horror film to checkout is Xtro from 1982, this film is fucked up & intense that even now It still scares the shit out of me.
Nice! I haven't seen 28 Days Later & 28 Weeks Later in a long time but, they are both two Horror Movies I plan to watch again! 👍😎
Awesome review bud! I agree this zombie movie (yes it is ppl) kicks ass. And yes, great characters. Btw is anyone else addicted to Cody’s background music in his videos? Lol, what is it Cody? Watch it be something so obvious lol.
Pistol1783 Yeah I been thinking same thing, that mysterious haunting but strangely soothing background music in Codys reviews, he probably won't tell us what it's from now lol.
It sounds like the menu music to Friday the 13th the game
They arn't zombies
Regarding the cameras, you might wanna watch the documentary "Side by Side" (2012). "28 Days" couldn't have been done differently back then and was in its way kind of ground-breaking.
I feel the same way they are zombie's to me as well.
28 Days Later
28 Weeks Later
28 Months Later
28 Years Later
28 Decades Later
28 Centuries Later
28 Millenium Later
28 28’s Later
28 days is probably my favorite zombie movie out there and one of my favorite horror films. I agree with your main criticism of it being grainy and I don't think it works in the way graininess looks on a film like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Definitely epic as hell though and the grainy look doesn't bother me personally. 11/10 movie
Kinda a random comment but you should review the kick ass movies. Love them
I remember i didn't like this film because the last half of it seemed like it was too dark and i couldn't make anything out really (Kinda like AVPR)
But i haven't seen this since around the time it came to dvd. I think imma rewatch it and see if i can or was too tired at the time.
I want to know how that guy survived in a coma for 28 days by himself.
The 28 days later zombies are the scariest to me too. They're seem like very sick enraged crackheads
Yes! A 28 Weeks Later would be a great review!
Ugh! I hated the part where the dad gets infected! Loved this movie & your review of it...But did you have to show the damn church clip?? It's late & it really freaked me out! Lol
You gotta review the sequel now too!
A message from the future. The script for 28 Months Later is said to be finished😬
I’m hyped!🤞🔥
I love 28 Days Later, but I also agree and love 28 Weeks Later better than the 1st, mainly because of the sequels into sequence and overall how it was filmed.
I know calling this one a zombie film is controversial, but it's my favorite zombie-type film. I'm not big on zombies either but this film is amazing.
The book I am Legend is probably the first to do the “the humanity remaining is more of a monster than the monster.” Best book ever! And its like 200 pages.
also I am Groot is pretty based if im being honest
It's a great zombie Movie and definitely a influential one as well. I mean look at how Rick from walking dead and Nick from fear the walking dead start out it's got similarities to 28 days later Jim's intro. Yeah I agree with you that church scene where the 2 zombies get up is scary just the way they look is scary. Yeah fast zombies are more scary and more of a threat I do like slow zombies but fast zombies scare me more. I would love to see a walking dead spin off with fast zombies. Good review.
Looks interesting, pretty much wanted to see these days some zombie movies but not generic TWD or "Idk how many Of The Dead", and seems really interesting with that "you don't need to watch out just fot bites or death possibility.... Same, the only negative i see is the look of the movie, looks really cartoonish.... I hope 28 weeks later looks better than that, but i hardly except, for some reason, weeks to ve better than days! Btw, are you going to review at some point Fear Clinic with R. Englund or maybe The Terminator 1984?
Its purposely meant to have that nitty gritty atmosphere about it, that's what makes it stand out. Danny Boyle has proven you don't need a big budget & expensive camera's to make such a memorable film, that's the magic!
I Am Legend must of had a higher budget but didn't even come close to Danny Boyle's masterpiece.
Dude, I am a stickler about zombie movies, and this is not a zombie movie, zombies are reanimated corpses, these people arent dead they have a disease. Still one of my favorite Danny Boyle movies.
Love this movie im honestly more into the slower Romero zombies but i love this and 28 weeks later
One of my favorite movies
this movie had a huge problem with audio because there are some scene you hear an audio that has nothing to do with the current scene.
Zombie Week!
This movie was just disappointing to me because everyone was hyping this up saying it’s a masterpiece and it’s one of the best zombie movies ever but I just felt like the writing was weak for some characters, the tone was inconsistent, the child actor was just atrocious in some scenes, the editing was so painful. I know a lot these problems I had with the movie were intentional like the editing and the tone, it’s still a good movie but if I didn’t hear people praising this movie, I probably would have liked it better
i know this comment was two years ago but i thought i was crazy thinking this movie was horrible so thanks for telling me i’m not alone lmfao
Do you recommend this movie in 2019 if so I think ima order myself a copy
Full discloser, like Cody, I'm not really a Zombie fan either.
That said, given how intense "28 Days Later" is, it might be worth a watch.
Great video my man
I thought the way they shot it was so good
29 months or years later will be set in France. why ? because the last scene of the movie was a bunch of survivors or infected running towards the Eiffel tower.
I find, the less you see of something stalking, the more terrifying it is.
Americans don't seem to get the British sense of filming styles, where all you want is big budget explosion's, cheesy one-liners & CG in every scene. Danny Boyle didn't want all that crap. He wanted that isolated feeling, minimal CG & unknown actors because 28 Days Later was Cillian Murphy's debut film, plus you pronounced his name wrong
Groundbreaking indeed. I have yet to figure out what the arbitrary lo-def resolution was meant to convey. Also, this movie opened my eyes as to who bears massive share of the guilt for the stupid hand-held, stroboscoped, shaky cam style of the early 2000s that still riddles otherwise passable movies these days. In addition, this is a spledid example of editing without any meaningful sense of directing the viewer's attention in the transition from cut to cut while spamming us with upwards of 2-3 camera angles _per second._ Dear Danny, please go watch George Miller's "Mad Max Fury Road" for a lesson on how to edit lightnig fast *_without_* losing the audience's attention.
28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later are extremely different. 28 Days is where you see what happens after the apocalypse and 28 Weeks is where you see what happens when the apocalypse starts. I feel like 28 Months and maybe 28 Years Later should take a Walking Dead or The Last of Us approach to the story and setting
I love the way they shot it.
Hands down the greatest British Horror movie ever!!!! Small budget & way better than most big budget American films!!! Best virus-infecfed movie ever, Masterpiece
You are the MAN!!
I remember when I saw this film when I was around 12 and hell yea it fucking scared me when she hacked her friend to pieces in the first kill dam
Great review
Loved 28 Days Later. Enjoyed 28 Months Later. Sadly it was recently confirmed that a third film is pretty much dead in the water now. Can't wait for Danny Boyle to take on James Bond next. If you've seen Stephen King's Cell, you can see the 28 Days Later influence, done horribly, horribly wrong. Loved the book, but Cell was shit. I guess World War Z and it's upcoming sequel are the closest we'll get to anther 28 Days Later.
I prefer 28 weeks later also. But this is great.
You should watch Train to Busan. Its so good, its my favorite zombie movie
This and i am legend people have a problem with the term zombie. if they look like zombies that's what i call them too.
Yes!
The infected would of died well before 28 months...28 hours seems better
But at the end of 28 weeks later it broke out in France
Logan Dial yeah you did see that...but infected can’t survive for long it shows them starving at the end of 28 days later ..you gotta remember they ain’t dead or zombies but just infected with a virus like rabies which causes rage and anger and is transmitted thru blood ...so all you need is 3 months worth of food/water and a secure location and you’ll be ok ..that’s why 28 hours later would be better because the public wouldn’t know what’s happening around them so they have to evacuate it would be more chaotic the first week of the virus circulating the uk..
King’s King yes the origin could work as the next movie
I love this film a lot. Brilliant horror suspense film by Danny Boyle and other. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it.
Did you review 28 weeks later??
If you like your fast zombies, Return of the Living Dead started the running, talking, and eating brains zombies. Check it out. Tarman lives!
28 seconds later, minutes later, hours, days, months, years, centuries, eons... etc lol
*your days are numbered*
Every romero movie puts the humans in the place of the real monsters
Awesome Review! Love your channel bro. This movie is pretty fun cause I like ZOMBIES
Its not a zombie film, they’re not zombies, they are still alive and can die from starvation and thirst etc they’re just rage
If you havent watched this film, what the hell are you doing here. GO WATCH IT!!
I think the trash quality is one of this movie's most unique and best features. I'm happy that danny boyle used it, there's nothing like it, thats why I still feel uncomfortable watching it, the contrast of it being very artistic and having a great screenplay with the very amateur camera gave it a look that we will never have again, all because people can only feed on super high quality generic 4k ass shit. Whats wrong with it looking VHS?
Great review...
Thes things are NOT zombies!!😤😠
They are called ragers or infected
😆😉😉😉
i like 28 weeks later much more....its one of a few sequels i like more then the original
Gray review brother I absolutely agree and I absolutely love this film also can't wait for them to do a third one where the fuck is 28 months later. Great review as always homie. And yes this is a zombie film.
For my taste i dont watch Movies in 4k. It dosent look good for my taste. especially certain films that live on certain filters, looks etc.
Gotta disagree with you on your negative, Cody. The amateurish digital camera aesthetic MAKES this movie for me. It makes it look so gritty, grimy and like you're there with them.
my friend can i kiss u
I love this movie plus this the movie that inspired left 4 dead and the walking dead
If you like that you might like Left 4 Dead but, you have to give George A Romero some credit without him you wouldnt have these types of movies.
28 Days Later was in production even before 9/11 happened even with the SARS epidemic
If you think the guerilla style is bad, maan, you didn't watch it at low quality on a website where you barely see some faces and understand the things that are happening! ;)
At day isn't as bad, but scenes like the night revenge and the face of the infected black's dude face at the window, man, sad that i can't see it right!
My TV is too good.
First world problems
Stopped watching when he said takes over the world, wrong over 30 secs
How do you have a conversation with someone who doesn't understand basic horror tropes?
This is hopeless. Enjoy.
