It was possibly the best in 2024 but I didn't have any to taste test or show in the Top Ten video so it missed out. They really are good with exceptional flavour.
I'm almost positive the mystery tomato is called Black Strawberry. I grew it this year to frame the garage. It gets a 10 for ornamental qualities and a 2 for taste. It takes a long time to ripen. It's sold as a cherry tomato but it's about the size of a golf ball maybe just a touch larger. I found the taste to be bland, the center to be mealy and the skin to be a bit chewy. So although it's gorgeous it's useless to eat. I had about 10 people taste this tomato and they all thought it fell short.
I wondered if it might be something like Black Strawberry but these are very tasty and even made it into my top 10 for this year, so I’m not so sure now. Sometimes they can taste completely different can’t they… I have been growing Black Beauty for two years and both years I’ve wondered what all the fuss is about. I wonder if it’s my seeds 🤷🏻♂️
@@veggieplot I grow Black Strawberry and enjoy the flavor quite a bit. The Black Strawberry is a bit smaller and has more coloration than the tomato shown. I'd keep looking. Good guess though.
That Green Zebra looks very different from the Green Zebra we grow in the U.S. Hate for someone here to buy it expecting a tri color beefsteak instead of the green and gold larger saladette size. I adore the look of the Michael Pollan tomato. Might want to try that one! Same with Summer of Love, wow. You are correct about green when ripe tomatoes, they are some of my favorites. Thank you for this video!
You may be right about the Green Zebra as I think someone else also commented on it a while ago. I was given the seeds so I went with what I had. I'll look into it some more. Michael Pollan is delicious and took me way by surprise when I first grew it, a lovely and prolific tomato.
I have another video to go and then my Top 10 which you might find useful. There is a real whopper in there which was a real surprise and it’s a real beauty.
A few more guesses for the unknown variety. Based upon how soft it seems between your fingers and under the knife I am guessing it was a very ripe example? First thoughts Blood Moon or Blue Zebra but thoughts then drifted towards Chestnut Chocolate, which is brown/orange when ripe, but finally becomes red. Perhaps if you compare the weight of your typical fruits at picking, and the colours during ripening, you will zero in on the most likely candidate. Foliage colour might help too as some of the dark forms have noticeable blue tones in the emerging leaves
I always enjoy your videos especially the taste testing ones. They help me to decide what I want to grow the next year. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with others.that
Thanks Vicki, I was wondering if they weren’t so popular but I just felt I needed to make them. One more to go and then the Top 10 video to finish off the series.
The first one does not look like green zebra. With all due respect of course. Look it up online to see pictures and you will see why I am saying this. Shape, size and colouring are different.
Thanks for the video, I will be Growing Lucid Gem next year but I need 1 more from your taste test's, and I'm still not sure, I already grow 3 of my favorite toms so One more.... UM.
I think you are right Laurie. I was given the seeds and that is the name that was provided and I just took it at face value. Re. size, I think this one is cat-faced, hence it's size although if it's a different variety, it might be true to form. Thank for pointing it out.
Your "Green Zebra" probably isn't Green Zebra. Yours is much bigger than what is normally known as Green Zebra. The variety makes normally 100 to 150 g fruits, a salad tomato, not a beefsteak!
Thank for the feedback, you're the second person to mention IA. You might be right but as they are quite small I wonder if they're Indigo Cherry. Have you grown them?
You might be right Yvette as most of the images on the web are quite different. My first year growing it and I was given the seeds to maybe there was a mix up. Quite delicious though.
Wow, that summer of love looks incredible 😲🥰

Gorgeous varieties!!! Love heirlooms. 🙏
Heirlooms are the way forward aren't they, so much variety and flavour. Do you have any favourites?

Thank you for helping me to find my perfect tomato-big, meaty and not too seedy.
I have another video to go and then my Top 10 which you might find useful. There is a real whopper in there which was a real surprise and it’s a real beauty.
Big rainbow looks like it has some characteristics of a pepper.
They're very large and wonderful colouring. I enjoyed them and might grow again in 2025, giving them a. miss this year.

Thanks for the suggestions Paul. I haven't heard of any of them so I'll Google them all and see what I can find.

I’m enjoying your tomato tasting videos. I’m in the Midwest USA, and there are several you’ve shown I hadn’t heard of before. Thanks!
Thanks Adrian, I'm glad you like them. There are so many to try I think we'd need a 100 lifetimes to get through them.

I'll take a look but I can only go by the seed packet or what the supplier has told me. Thanks for the heads up though.
@@veggieplot no...I understand. I am just saying google the variety and see the pictures. Significant different
Growing green zebra but yours look massive. Did you get it from that vale farm
I did Andy, Honeyvale Farm. Not bad but a little too acid for me.
@@veggieplot mine look different it's on my Instagram last real thingy
Another great vlog. I added 3 more to my list😂
Thanks Robin, one more to go and then the Top 10 chart rundown 😂👍🏻

Lucid Gem is wonderful but another pipped it to the number one slot this year… Top 10 vid out soon 🙂
That is NOT a green zebra sir! I believe you are mistaken, green zebras are much smaller and they get yellowish stripes, not red

Thank you Adrian 👍

I think you're right, I was given the seeds and this is what they came labelled as. I wonder what they are then?
maybe indigo apple?
Thank for the feedback, you're the second person to mention IA. You might be right but as they are quite small I wonder if they're Indigo Cherry. Have you grown them?
I was going to say Indigo Apple as well. Beautiful tomato either way.
I dont think it is a green Zebra. Green Zebra is not so big an d when it is ripe, it gets more yellow. No Red stripes

Agreed - Not Green Zebra
