    The anime could not have ended in a better way than this. "The end of Prologue" The author literally stated that the past 24 eps were just a prologue to the real story that's about to come; a story about redemption; about sorrow and grief that will test the MC to it's limit. And it just gets better from here. The story is so much more than a revenge saga than anyone can imagine.

      I dunno I think it's still going strong. Think about it for a sec. It is kinda slow right now, but I believe it will be worth it. And it is necessary for the characters to discuss all the philosophical aspects of bringing and not bringing weapons to Vinland (even though we somewhat already had this discussion before) and other characters' reasoning to bring them; otherwise, it will seem like a rush voyage. Just like the time skip author did(really wish he showed us Thorffin's voyage in Istanbul).

      I tend to agree. I felt that the baltic war arc brought back characters that would have been better off leaving out until later arcs. I just wanted to journey to continue but it felt like everything was put to a halt for some characters and ideas that I felt didnt get explored that well? Or the payoff wasn't very satisfying? Or the characters weren't as likeable maybe.

    The episode dedicated to Askeladds story of his childhood and the overall theme of "Thorfinn you're an idiot" was the best episode behind maybe the Thors death episode and Askeladd death episode. (For MOI)
    The idea that Askeladd is giving his backstory, exposition we'd want and solidifiying the idea that he's finna die AND recontextualising Thorfinns relationship in his head to Askeladd was genius. Thorfinn NEVER wanted Askleadd truly dead. He'd have been dead if he wanted it so, similar to how Askeladd did his oppressor. Thorfinn was fighting the pain he felt about losing his father to Askeladds men WHILE fighting the weird surrogate father bond he somehow gained being with the mercs for so long. If askeladd survives, idk if thorfinn actually gets revenge by his own hand, he's just stunted growth at "I GOTTA KILL ALL THE TITANS" eren level schtick. Love this series so much.

      However it was quite a traumatising experience and an epiphany on love which was hinted at by the priest so it’s not too far out of the realm of possibility but it was quite sudden.

      Dan The man - except his epiphany is dumb. Love is selfish and not indiscriminate.
      Also, trauma tends to weaken or destabilize a person, it doesn’t turn cowards too scared to speak into bosses. Nothing is impossible but this was certainly implausible.

    • @dantheman5607
      @dantheman5607 4 года назад +6

      Christopher Rivera however that’s your perception of love, clearly the priest had other ideals which he likely taught canute. Ragnar dying and people currently senselessly fighting over him would make him have a different view of life considering he was largely sheltered prior to the main story. I don’t mind the change in his philosophy but his rapid growth in confidence and leadership was far fetched.

    • @thabokgwele5268
      @thabokgwele5268 4 года назад +11

      Christopher Rivera I definitely agree that love is discriminative. I remember thinking exactly that when the priest was talking.
      Though, I do think that it was just the priest's personal opinion and interpretation, and Canute happened to believe it.
      About the trauma, some people say that if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger. Perhaps Canute's realization that nobody else will spoonfeed him, forced him to strengthen his will and resolve. I could be wrong though.

    The animation.
    The music.
    The fights.
    The characters along with unexpected endings all round.
    This anime is one of the best I've seen in my 28 years, they got the voice actors perfect too.
    I think alot of casual watchers who maybe saw 1 or 3 episodes have their impression of the show done in their mind.
    Main character is shit is one of the most dumbest thing I've heard.
    Anyway who watches this with an open mind you'd understand how great they made the characters around the main to shape him into a great character.

  • @turbozed
    @turbozed 4 года назад +2

    Canute's character shift seems too rushed. Probably is. But there's a good argument that it still makes sense with the info given:
    1. Canute admitted that he had to be cautious in everything he did. So his character prior to the transformation is something he admits is an act.
    2. You can see traces of New Canute in more private settings when he looks more confident and talks in a deeper voice while eating the stew he cooked with Conehead and Thorfinn. We find out he was born into a ruthless world and was able to survive by being smart. So he clearly understands the world of Vikings and playing the political game since he was young. This is similar to the story of how Emperor Claudius pretended to be weak in order to survive Nero's purges.
    3. The loss of Ragnar was an obvious trigger, but the reason why is that he was a tenuous lifeline of happiness for him. There are three 'father figures' for Canute. His biological father (the King), his surrogate (Ragnar) and the 'father in Heaven' (God). Only Ragnar loved him and once he realized he had nobody left, he rejected the other father figures. So whatever cunning helped him to survive previously he just focused it on defying both the King and God.
    4. He suffered a concussion during his transformation. This is an actual thing in real life where some people with brain damage lose fear or gain impulsiveness after suffering brain trauma. The Ragnar dream sequence where he loses his emotional attachments to the world happening means its likely caused by the injury since it happens while he's concussed. He had already had days to process Ragnar's death so the fact that it happened at that exact moment is meaningful.
    I'm not sure the writers intended all of this, and it probably would've been helpful to show a scene where you see a brief glimpse of how much of a badass he could be prior to episode 18, but maybe the writers wanted it to be jarring. In any case, we didn't really know much about Canute at all prior to that, and the only person who did was Ragnar who had a very high opinion of him.

  • @TehWhiteTiger

    It was a good anime, I loved it all except for well the main character.
    Thorfinn started as an annoying kid and well just never really grew up. Sure he suffered like a lot but of all the character I don't see he developed at all. He got his father killed and held onto a grudge so he wouldn't have to deal with it, that's how I saw it. I was desperately waiting for his anger to subside to an actually character but it just never happened.
    Every other character was solid though.

    First show i watched since being stuck at home. Loved it so much i spent the first 24hrs watching it and the next 72 reading the entire manga. Fell in love with the story and dynamics of this anime and now manga. Definitely read the manga and even maybe do videos covering arcs and your opinions. A lot of character shift takes place after the prologue obviously but how the characters clash with the world really stands out... sorta like luffy but he hasn't changed so idk if that counts. Keep up all your hard work, I does not go unnoticed

    I just watched this for the first time on NetFlix. Very good anime. I can see why it got so much hype back in 2019.....I agree with your points on Thorfin...his revenge plot got tiring. Rwar Im MAD Fight me Grrrrrr. Askelad didnt feel like a Big Bad Anime villain that but it wasnt surprising when his death came but that scene alone was definitely the hilight of the entire show

    If you are going to take up anime/manga that is set in real history then i strongly recommend Kingdom, it is set in the warring states period of China and is just jam packed with story spanning 641 chapters and it is still on going ( Note: even though there is an anime adaptation i wouldn't recommend watching it, as it is done in some really poor 3D which i personally despise, though while saying that the animation is bad it does actually get better in the later season but i would still recommend reading the manga)

  • @rydean5796
    @rydean5796 2 года назад

    I would highly recommend the manga, and also keep in mind that this season was merely the prologue. thorfin seems less compelling here, but it sets up the story perfectly for the growth and change he'll undergo.

  • @g.sergiusfidenas6650

    If one series could benefit from an original movie it would be Vinland Saga, since it is Thorfinn's story we do not see anything that follows king Swyen's in England except for like two panels with Canute; but the whole reconquest, King Edmund Ironside, that worm Streona and seeing Thorkell and Jarl Ulf in action would make an excellent movie.
