I upgraded to 4K this year. Bought a tcl for the bedroom and a 65” LG nano cell off craigslist.
Even for a 3 yr old tv the LG is night and day better color, Smart AI and brightness.
My shift to physical media really came from buying a camper, you can’t always rely on internet so you need the physical copy.
After streaming for 10+ years I’m blown away on the quality.

I upgraded last year and it motivated me to start collecting again. Got me into Arrow, Criterion, Blue Underground and all the other boutique labels. I've collected over 100 4k films/shows and a bunch more blurays. Even with arrow and criterion blurays, they have 4k or 2k restorations, and all the new players upscale to 4k so those discs still look really good. Switching to 4k was definately worth it.

Watch this channel all the time and subscribe. For Xmas I got the Shining, the Star Wars trilogy, Alien, Home Alone, Predator. My birthday in November brought me The Alfred Hitchcock collection, Flash Gordon, and Jaws. Now have over 50 4K titles. Thanks Jeff. I also buy physical media games, and music. Don’t get me wrong I love Spotify and Netflix etc and have those but I just love to collect stuff also. I have Atmos 7.1.2 through my Denon 4500 also. Being at home has never been better.

@@1165mac I agree! Someone else said it before...the leap from Blu Ray to 4K is nowhere near as mesmerizing as the leap from DVD to Blu Ray. Some of us have just been so spoiled that they probably weren’t even around in the 80’s when all we had were grainy VHS cassettes. That’s why I can’t thumb my nose up at good 1080p discs and never will as long as it’s done right. I especially won’t do it just because something “better” has come along in the form of 4K. What happens when they come out with 8K? Will you then thumb your nose up at 4K given how great looking those discs can look? It will never be enough.

Got several tv shows Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, Star Trek, etc I doubt they will ever release on 4K so will be keeping those. Other movies I watch less frequently I will never upgrade to 4K on unless they are dirt cheap on sale.

@@lanceheaps581 I agree 1000%. I mean DVDs are still selling because everyone hasn’t made the jump to Blu Ray. Think of all the people that have made the jump to Blu Ray and haven’t made the jump to 4K. Physical media is physical media, whether it’s DVD, Blu Ray, or 4K. When we say long live physical media surely we don’t just mean 4K. I know I don’t. Blu Ray has its place just as much as 4K does, and DVD for those that still choose to purchase those discs. The more physical media that sells the better, regardless of the format.

I couldn’t agree more 👍 I’ve always been a movie collector and home theatre enthusiast so I decided to upgrade my entire 1080p home theatre in April 2020 to have a 4K TV, 4K blu ray player and 4K Dolby Atmos Receiver which I hooked up x8 speakers in a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos arrangement. The best upgrade I’ve ever done in my opinion 😎. I’m also an Amazon Prime Video subscriber and have definitely noticed Amazon have made so many more great movies available on 4K since April as when I first got my 4K TV there wasn’t many 4K movies to watch via Prime. On New Years Eve I watched 1917 on 4K via Prime Video 👍

@@cheetahluv210 I agree that current and past movies will never look better than now in 4K with HDR. Physical film resolution will never really push beyond 4K (even if some IMAX and 70mm film might a little bit) and the dynamic range we have now also exceeds films ability. And movies that were shot digitally and released now also don't exceed the abilitys of 4K UHDs. There are two areas where I'm not sure though: The color depth and resolution and compression. 12 bit colors are a thing and all 4K UHDs that I know use 4:2:0 chroma sampling, so basically we have 2K color resolution. And compression really messes up some scenes in 4K UHDs. But because I doubt that there will be much more new physical media formats I guess 4K UHD will actually be the final high quality physical format. In conclusion: Well worth collecting.

I agree. I've had a 4K player and TV for 5 years and found it extremely hard getting my hands on good 4K releases the first 3-4 years. The shift has now finally taken place and prices has dropped significantly in the last year. Thanks to you it's now a lot easier to find out if the upgrades from Blu-ray to 4K Blu-ray are worth buying. When in doubt I always check if you've done a review before buying - and let you decide if I get them or not. The only sad part is the drop in recent years sales of physical formats. Streaming services are killing the discs, at least here in Norway. The result: not one store in my town focuses on 4K bluray so all purchases has to be done online. Since chances of movies being released on 8K discs are slim to non, I'm focusing on future proofing my collection of classics. Thanks for the great work!

Keep in mind that just because a model has UHD in the label it won't necessarily deliver the UHD experience. I have a cheaper TCL 4 series 4k UHD set for the bedroom. I got it last year, my first 4k UHD set and I was underwhelmed. This Black Friday I got a pricier Sony 4k UHD x900h set for my TV room and it's a night and day difference in PQ. Got a TCL 6 series in 2018, as it was considered the best TV under a grand. I love the Roku interface but it has a narrow viewing angle, so I feel compelled to sit directly in front of it in order to always get the best picture (as opposed to a few feet left or right on the sectional couch). I'll enjoy it a few more years and hopefully upgrade again to an OLED. Otherwise it's a daily joy to watch content on. However, I think having a legit sound system is even more impactful on the experience. So, get some good speakers too!

The last 5 seasons I have on Blu Ray and it is a noticeable upgrade. I am 38 so I remember the pre DVD era, and it was a nice upgrade going from VHS to DVD. However back then we were watching on such smaller screens compared to today. DVD looks fine on a 19 inch or even 30 inch screen. Put it on a 65 inch screen not so much.

Finally did it, Jeff! Switched from my 10 year-old HD Samsung 46-in - which I loved, by the way! I jumped to a 4K Samsung TU8000 series 'crystal series.' My only complaint is in the B&W content - TV and physical media classics; my old TV was faithful to desaturated grayscale, but my new 4K TV treat this questionably. I see elements of a pale yellow (instead of white) pool into areas that are surrounded with dark or black zones - even if I reduce all the color setting! I'd welcome any recommendations on how to tweak my settings.

Bigger than 55" tv's really need 5k or 8k in my opinion but it's always about the money and availability.
