Great video! Important topic, good camera work, useful narration, plain language, and no chirpy background music that interferes with explanations. A+! This is not a DIY topic for me. I would always prefer to call a professional. But it is very helpful to know what you're paying for. Extra credit for being respectful of the homeowner by protecting the machine. Many thanks.
New subscriber. Been doing maintenance for apartments most my working life. Great video! Just a warning to anyone new to using a powered snake; be extra careful while operating with gloves on. Normally you don't want to wear gloves while using any power tool, but due to where you will most likely be using a snake such as drains and toilets, gloves provide protection from an array of possibly harmful substances that may be encountered while clearing drain lines. Be careful to not have a glove get caught in your snake coil. Your hand and fingers can be injured pretty severely if it gets caught and wound, especially if you're using a bigger drum snake and have someone else running the motor.
My drain is stopped up I pour liquid plumber in it had thick white residue floating in the bottle followed that with hot water set 15 minutes ran my rubber bladder on a hose in and this usually solves the problem afterc15 minutes Nor this time the drain pipe overflowed within 6 minutes I live in apt. No body else has a washer so now what?😢
The kitchen Drain line is the issue it collects a lot of debris and causes the back ups due to the fact that kitchen and laundry share a common line to the nearest bathroom Hydro jetting the kitchen line along with the laundry line cures this issue for many years approximately 15 years of accumulation before a homeowner notices any issues
That is exactly my issue; the backwash overflowed in the washer area, and now I cannot get rid of the smell, despite cleaning with bleach; I'm overwhelmed, don't know what to do, and can't find a resolution; if anyone who is knowledgeable is reading this, should I take off the baseboards, and cut the drywall, checking to see if it's wet? Oh, the humanity.
You got me thinking I could do this in about 10 minutes. I ain't! I've flooded house too many times. But now I can play by play my husband. Thanks so much. Great video.
very helpful, I did everything just like in the video and my drain problem is all fixed, called 3 plumbers, cheapest was asking $550 to come out, and I just went to Lowe's and bought a $29.99 tool, took care of all the problems. Thanks a lot!!
Thank you and I just did this tonight, but could not get past the neck/turn. I am using Green Gobber Enzyme - in which I used 2 years ago on the kitchen sink and it worked great. Yesterday, I used the garden hose and 'listened' to see if it was flowing and did hear it start to bubble/fill up, so obviously not cleared yet. I will try the auger again tomorrow, and then to the roof (thanks to all comments below) to clear the vent pipes. This 1965 set up has been working for me since 2012, but in July 2023, had a sewer/pump elec. breakdown and could not use any plumbing in the house for about 3 weeks, which caused this washer back up? Oh Joy, more fun tomorrow! Thanks for the tip on the 'getting around the pipe 'turn' joint!
Thank you! My kitchen sink a floor below my washer is gurgling when I run the washer so I'm going to try checking the washer machine drain this way and then my sink drain.
here is a good one for you. my washer at least 1 time a year we would have to have it cleaned. then it got to where snaking would not work. so i put a t on about 3 to 4 inches from the top and put a bucket to catch the water. we was going to do a bathroom remodel and i did not want to keep letting water run all over the floor. also our washer and dryer is behind our bathroom. so i started the demo and we have a ranch slab style house so i dug down and exposed the lines coming from the washer and the top looked fine i got to really looking at it and the whole back side of the pipe was gone. the washer was draining in the hole where the pipes when through to the main i could not believe it. and it was the old galvanized pipe from the 50's i got it all cut out and replaced and it has been about 2 years and no issues oh also the used 1 1/2 inch pipe to. back then they thought that pipe was going to last forever i bet.
These are always a pita. I find many times testing with just the water supply hose doesn't compare to the amount the machine flows and can get frustrating call backs that it's still not draining... In my experience a water snake, water balloon type snake is the better option. I used to hate getting these jobs. Now they are a breeze.
one thing i've found when doing this is to remove the gasket from the washer hot line hose before sticking it in the drain to lessen the chance of loosing it down the drain it will leak for sure if not there - ask me how i know lol
Great instructional video! My husband has had to snake ours a few times, but it's getting to where it doesn't take but a couple of months before it overflows again. We've been told it's because of our 2 inch drain pipe and the newer washing machines that pump out the water. Apparently, the smaller pipe and gravity aren't enough to keep up with the pump. Any thoughts or suggestions on a resolution - other than having to jackhammer the concrete to replace the pipe?
Hello great video, my problem is I have a utility tub next to my washer and dryer, when the washer drains, water backs up into the utility tub, up to 6 inches at times, it does drain but takes a long while.I have the wall box like in the video, I used a snake like you did, mine was not that fancy, but I inserted the full 25 ft into the drain and it did not solve the problem, do you think I should get a longer snake? When I run water into the utility tub it takes a good 5 min before it starts to back up, my uneducated thought is the clog may be further away. All the pipes are pvc.
A good video. Unfortunately, I've done it exactly as you describe, including using hot water to flush the line, and still have a problem. It comes and goes & to a varying degree. The line will flow, but slower than the washer discharge. Currently it has to be stopped 4 times while pumping the water out, but sometimes only 2 times & then it will run ok for a while. It seems as though there is debris in the line that moves to create the blockage. The snake will go the full 25' which will reach the 4" main line & come out "clean", so it seems that the snake can get past the blockage. I've run the hose while running the snake. I've run the snake from the vent. Is there a brush accessory that will "scrub" the whole inside of the line instead of only the 1/4 to 1/2" of the snake and auger tip?
Did you ever get this cleared out? Mine stops up every month or two. I've cleared it with a snake, but usually I just poor drain cleaner. I'd like to clean the pipe more thoroughly.
I looked up the items you listed for amazon and neither of them had that end where you could change out the heads. Im used the kind that are one piece with wire bulb on the end but it would not go past the p-trap. Its a 2" pipe in thd laundry room
Going to do this right now. On ours it has a clear small rain tube which seems to be coming from upstairs and there is water that’s draining out of it. Our wash machine drain did not back up. This is where we were here in the gurgling at. So now because we know that Claire pipe that also goes into the washing machine drain tube were wondering if the blockage might be upstairs instead of downstairs. Any words of advice would be very welcomed. Thanks for doing this. We appreciate it. I subscribed.
Hey I follow you on tiktok! Thank you for sharing this video because I just did a load of laundry & instead of draining down the pipe all the water came splashing up & out & onto my floor. Looks like I’ll have to invest in one of those drain auger/snake things.
Hi my washer has water leakage, probably pipe clogged ?. If the case is same as yours, then leaking water should be around pipe close to wall , right! But I did not see wet around corner. Your reply is appreciated.
what about when it's frozen?? Ours froze yesterday. At least I'm assuming because it's about -13 degrees here and this has never happened before this weather came in. We were washing clothes and it backed up on the floor. Pulled up the drain hose and saw water just sitting on top. The water and wall is very cold.
I'm having this problem. I had a plumber come out and he snaked u on top of roof and in front yard. Washer still overflowing. He didn't snake the back drain of washer.
I can run my hot water straight into the drain and it doesn’t overflow but as soon as let the washing machine drain itself into the pipe it overflows. Why is that?
That’s cause the new washers drain at a higher rate than the old ones, also running any water from a pipe source wouldn’t equate the flow from the washer’s drain cycle, especially the new washers
Does the size of the washer hose cause the back up in the drain? Our drain has a backup and I was told by apartment manager that it was the size of the hose because the washer was too powerful and it is shooting out water at a high speed. She asked me to switch out the hose that came with the washer. Of course I did not do it. I don’t agree with her. Her plumber said there was no back up in the drain
How do you how do you how do you get the water out from the house the bottom of the washing machine when you turn to drive you can hit water inside how do you get that water out?
Could my washer need this? The suds are showing up in the toilet. My washer is in the bathroom and when the washer is draining the toilet won't flush down, it will go back to normal once the washer stops draining.
Question, I opened the filter on the actual washing machine to make sure it was clean. The residual water inside smelled like sewage but was clear. When I pulled up the hose going into the standing pipe, it looked like it maybe had sewage on the end of it? Is this an indication that the sewage is making it all the way up or is the brown stuff normal on this? How worried should I be?
So my drain line is 1 1/2. My home is around 1970 ish I cannot get it to stop backing up. I changed the p-trap to 2" and I still have the same problem. Snaked it to 25ft. A plumber wants to charge me 5grand to "repipe" it. What do I do?
I am in the exact same situation. I changed the P trap and snaked the pipe and it was good for a couple months and started to back up again. Leads me to think the trap did very little to help. Plumber told me that I need to change all my cast iron pipes in the future.😢
Alex I have the same problem I did what the video said when I ran the washer it backup for me also did you get any replies if so can you share. Is this the correct email
For those who are watching this in the future, I have watched all the youtube videos and the only real fix is to have a plumber go to your roof and clean out all the vent pipes. That's it, immediate zero overflow.
My laundry drain only over flows randomly? Seems like if it had a blockage wouldn’t it overflow all the time? I’ve ran water down it through my water hose for 15-20 minutes & it never overflowed but it did just before I did that? 🤷🏻♂️
any luck? I’m going through the same thing…I just rented a snake but it seems it’s not getting pass the trap. I’m ready to break drywall cut the pipe to get a good view.

When using gloves with plumbing snake please make sure they are the leather kind and not the cotton fabric kind.

This is tierd plumbing in a condo not tied into thr kitchen
I think this is my issue. If someone takes a shower upstairs, my downstairs kitchen sink floods as does my laundry line.
That is exactly my issue; the backwash overflowed in the washer area, and now I cannot get rid of the smell, despite cleaning with bleach; I'm overwhelmed, don't know what to do, and can't find a resolution; if anyone who is knowledgeable is reading this, should I take off the baseboards, and cut the drywall, checking to see if it's wet? how long do you leave the water bladder on?
Water bladder just goes out the roof though right?
Great directions man! wish i had the motorized snake, that was alot of manual turning..
Great video great demonstration… one question… will pouring draino into the pipe have an affect on the blockage for a washing machine ?
Don’t use draino, if it’s the lye version it’s turns into an obstruction. In fact avoid it.
Bro thank you I can fix mine now first video let's go took a minute to get the wording in on the search bar but I got it hella thank you

always wear safety glasses, you never know if there is some water in the pipe or possibly some drain cleaner and splashes out of the snake drum seam.
Thank you very much it helped me a lot 👍🏽👍🏽
So I follow your steps, is it normal for the snake to be black liquid on it
And does the kitchen pipe and washer pipe connects to each other?
Question, I opened the filter on the actual washing machine to make sure it was clean. The residual water inside smelled like sewage but was clear. Washing machine just needs cleaning. The thing you removed on your washing machine acts like a filter and needs to be cleaned every so often.
So my drain line is 1 1/2. My home is around 1970 ish I cannot get it to stop backing up. I changed the p-trap to 2" and I still have the same problem. Snaked it to 25ft. A plumber wants to charge me 5grand to "repipe" it. What do I do?

You be surprised by simply putting hair catchers in you showers and sinks. If you clean your pipes out really good I highly recommend them.

Where do I buy this particular drum snake? Along with the swivel bulb?
Home Depot. It’s a Ridgid. Buy the red one that connects to your drill.
I think you were inside my washing machine before I turn it on so I can see the bottom of the wash machine. How do you get that out?
Relaxing and entertaining! 😌
Can you damage the trap?
Maybe with an older one
