Mr. Neberkracker's side of things was just pure saddening. He rescued that woman from a life of misery and enslavement, and he genuinely loved her. He wanted to build her a house from the ground up. Once he realized her soul had stuck around, he likely built the house with the intention of recreating a body for her, one that could make her feel more human again.
Over the years, when she lashed out at children, he knew it was a problem and made himself out to be a cruel and terrifying man in order to protect the children _and_ keep his wife with him at the same time. He likely contemplated destroying the house several times over the years, but he never had the heart to do it until the very end when his hospitalization was the wake-up call that he needed to acknowledge the reality of everything. He just couldn't physically keep up his usual solution. His lines of "I have to make things right." and "But if I let her go, I'll have no one." set up the idea that he was well aware that his solution wasn't a sustainable one, but he just couldn't let go of her (I feel like the fact that she showed no sign of wanting to be freed was what made this plot so unique). Constance trusted, loved, and relied on him. To destroy her house body was akin to killing her all over again in his eyes, but he had to do it to protect innocent children.
It's easy to be selfish when you genuinely do the things you do for the sake of others. Children were terrified and had their toys stolen. People and animals alike were hurt by Constance lashing out, but despite knowing that this was a serious problem, her devoted husband could never bring himself to harm her. He craved companionship more and more as he drove people away, fueling that horrible cycle.
We don't often have media portrayals of relationship dynamics like this where the _man_ is the one caught between loving a parner who's cruel and harmful to other people, but also someone good to him and someone who he relies on. It's truly something to be praised and treasured as high-quality writing.

@@maximoesco I always got nightmares of the house as a kid, and even a few times as an adult. This movie stands the test of time. This is not a horror film "for kids", this is a *horror film!* I even think this movie is actually scarier than some horror films with a higher age rating. Five Nights At Freddy's is the first one that comes to mind. It's a PG-13 horror film that fails to be scary, but Monster House is just PG and is a lot more scary in my opinion.

The whole shtick about a house being haunted has been done lots of times, but this movie takes it to a whole new level. The house isn't just haunted, it's alive.
It's story is decently well written, with some flaws, and the animation is really unique. Characters are memorable, music is cool, and it's scary enough where it's not rated R.
As a fan of the movie, I'm gonna give you some facts that you may not have known about Monster House.
1: The original plot of the movie was set up where DJ was a troubled kid who was constantly bullied, and he eventually finds out the house is alive. He then lures his bullies to the house, and they get eaten. There wasn't a whole lot more to it, because it got scrapped for being too dark.
2: The house was originally supposed to have human flesh inside when the protagonists end up stuck in the house, but that got removed for being too dark.
3: In the DVD extras menu of Monster House, there's a behind the scenes showing off how the creators got the ideas to making the house alive, as well as what specific sounds to use to make the house sound alive as well.
4: When Skull leaves the Game Zone, the actor who played as him broke his ankle when he exited the building while filming.
Monster House has a unique world, it makes me wish there was more after it, but it's one of those movies that makes you thankful that it exists, and it's probably for the best that it stays as one movie.
However, there is talk that Monster House could get a sequel or spinoff, but that's up for debate. Given Monster House is just one movie, it'd be hard to try and appeal to audiences today.
Overall, Monster House is a solid 8/10.

I’ve forgotten how to be happy.
I barely feel happy emotions anymore and most nights I either don’t dream or I have these terrible nightmares. Why does this have to happen to me
    :(
Only 10 years ago I was 12 so I guess I’m not too old. I can still fix it right?

I think another thing they do well with their ability to keep the same street infront of DJ’s house from getting dull is through their use of colors and light. Everytime something creepy happens, the lens gets a noticeably darker, bluer hue, whereas more serene moments are yellow-orange hued. It’s done in a way that makes those moments feel almost like it’s in a different location, possibly just being their minds

I love the details of how the house can just break itself to make a face. You got the front porch poles that would snapp in half and bending to form the mouth and teeth. The gutters, shingles, and frame of the house would break and concave to every expression and movementthe house makes. I think the only detail the house misses is what the interior of house looks like as it's in it's monster form. The entrance of the house when the monster lets out of roar just shows a black void. When we later get to see the interior of the house, everything feels still besides the walls shifting to represent the breathing of the house. Like the whole house is literally stretching itself apart to create a humanoid monster. I think due to time constraints and budget reasons, they couldn't put that much detail.

this was one of my most favorite movies growing up, scared the shit outa me as a kid but the more i watch it the more i love it and my biggest flex is i own the CD and the disk has the picture of the plan they had to drug Constantine and the main menu was a loop of her sitting there creepily still and groaning and when you press play it plays the doorbell sound (which is still scary to me) then she comes to life and jumpscares/eats you, it was horrifying as a kid, like when i felt like watching the movie i'd either close my eyes to press play or ask my mom which only happened twice cause she got sick of me doing that lol, as a teen whos addicted to horror now I'd love to experience it again but we dont have our old DVD player anymore so i can't :(

Was so shocked at the end that this was your first film essay! The presentation was perfect, to the point and well paced with no unnecicary padding to drag it down. Very engaging! And I'm definately gonna be rewatching monster house after this lol. Keep it up yo :D

I loooved this movie as a kid. But, where i live, it got quite censored nowadays when it's shown on tv, the kiss scene is actually cut, and some others like the drunk dude getting eaten by the house, since he was drinking, and chowder stealing medicine from the drug store

i felt bad for neberkracker. he was a really kind person and genuinely loved constance. he probably felt horrible when she died, and then even worse when he realised she was still alive, possessing the house. and then he had to become the opposite kind of person he truly was, and be a horrible old man scaring children.

i used to think this movie was scary, but now i think its pretty tragic considering all Nebbercracker's self-given purpose was to love, but forced to hate out of fear for not only his, but everyone else's lives around him

I used to watch this a lot on a 3 pack dvd with this Caroline and some movie that’s a number that I never watched. I was scared of this as a kid and the animation style makes you feel uneasy but I still watched it all the time because I secretly loved it.

I do wish they’d make an updated animation for this film since everyone is all about remakes nowadays. Of course the old dated CGI will always be the OG therefore unbeatable, but it would be interesting to see it with the updated technology…or better yet, 2D blended 3D.

And I would also like to the camera movement. I just noticed after watching last night after god-knows how many years. They got really creative with the camera movements in this movie, they didn't waste any time. And my personal favorite part, probably for most people, was when DJ was swinging with the hook, and how it started after Jenny threw the dynamite in the air and it followed the bomb in the air until DJ caught it and followed DJ across the air when he was swinging with the hook, which was awesome to me, and then followed the dynamite again when DJ threw it through the chimney, it was awesome. Even with small or short shots, like a close-up shot of Nebbercracker taking the trike inside his house and focused really close to the trike and then his face, adding like some suspense or tensed moment, kind of intriguing for me. Or when they take Nebbercracker inside the ambulance and it follows the window with DJ's reflection getting far and far away. Loved this movie, and still will do😎

i think for me the most stressing/scariest part, when DJ is abt to grab the dynamite and he falls down. I lost all hope in everyone, but when the music builds up and he shouts “3” and Jenny throws the dynamite and the facts that he catches it is so amazing. But yall, can you imagine that drop hanging on the ball thing, that was so brave from DJs part and everyone’s. This movie is js perfection
