- This is a review of the Ican A22 bike frame. This was an eye opener. Someone has listened to feedback and acted upon it. A lot of the features which are small details have been looked at. The cable routing and fits have been carefully considered. The machining tolerances on this frame were excellent.
Internally the frame had very little wrong with it. It was very clean, no layup displacement could be seen. This is a sub $1000 frame but you wouldn't think it if you took the badges away

Truely an eye opener, illustrates just how the bike industry has taken its customers for granted in recent years both in terms of price and quality of the end product.
There's a lot of snobbery in cycling which the manufacturers have tapped into, they realised that people are willing to spend vast sums of money on crap, because people like to brag about how much they paid for something, can you blame the manufacturers.
I have bought 2 frames from OG-Evkin for pennies on the dollar compared to most American Frames and they have performed flawlessly for 5 years, and 4 years. The few minor issues I have had (one was my fault) OG Evkin has responded immediately and made things right. Don't listen to all of the hired trolls that blast these videos as most are probably paid by the name brand manufacturers.
I am not a troll, and unfortunately I do not get paid by brand manufacturers, yet I do want to raise three issues regarding price/quality:
1. Your criticism applies to high end frames used by professional athletes or large pocket amateurs. An extremely low end commuter brand bike rider like myself still pays a reasonable price for a perfectly functional and durable* bike with high price to quality ratio. This ratio decreases for high end products when compared to the same brand inexpensive products. In that sense, bicycle industry is not different from any other consumer discretionary industry.
2. In an free market economy, brands perform the additional roll of a broker. Some brands give low end bicycle frames a lifetime warranty.
3. Since last couple of years were difficult on supply chain, one could easily get the wrong impression on long term price/quality of bikes.

Keep in mind there are costs that go into name brand products that direct sellers do not have to account for. Advertising, sponsorships, middlemen (the bike shops). Everyone has to get paid, after all. So it is not exactly that the big name brands are deliberately trying to take a p*ss out of everyone.

I have an ICAN X-Gravel frame that I stripped, painted and built into a gravel bike. The frame was immaculate. They make really good products. Bottom bracket (BSA), thru axles, brake mounts etc all perfect. I'll be building an ICAN road bike next.

A gravel bike is one that can accept quite large tires. Maybe even twice as large as a roadie. Lots of road bike are simply impractical overpriced garbage.
I have an ICAN full suspension XC mountain bike frame. I've had it for 3 years. 4 good crashes on it. 2 really bad ones (over the bars). Raced for 1 full season. It has been truly riden. It's still intact and working fine. And I'm no lightweight at 195lbs.

For me the mounting surface of the rear brake caliper was the most astonishing part to see. I work on bikes of a well known German Bike Brand and nearly every Caliper surface has a tiny Metal Insert, surrounded by the Composite, which we mechanics have to flatten to make the caliper straight.

I had a few questions about this one. I'll try and cover them here.
To be clear, I can't emphasise enough how someone has taken some extra steps in manufacturing to ensure their product goes that extra mile. Ican are selling direct to the customer so they don't want remote problems. In this case, they've machined the relevant parts to achieve a good fit. I have never seen that before. Not even the Time bottom bracket can compete with a machined aperture. The additional cost for the manufacturing processes will probably be around $50 if they did it in bulk (that's a guess) but the extra steps in the line and integrating would likely be more of a headache. I will always give credit where it's due and for $900USD, I can't really fault it. Well thought out and executed.
On the subject of wrinkles and voids. A void is basically an area of nothingness, it could be air or it could be resin. In that region you will not have the strength of the carbon. Hence you could have the stiffest carbon going but if it has been manufactured with voids then you lose that strength. It's much better to have a frame that is well made of less stiff carbon than a frame full of voids made of Toray T9000000. The strength of the carbon is unlikely to ever make up the difference.
I'm not sure the facing that's evident here is likely to be done to frames not going to 'influencers'. This is the first ICAN frame I've seen where it's so obvious ... but maybe they just started doing it, who knows.

@Alfred Wedmore if it were a new tool designed for resharpening, the bore would have been loose, not tight, as Hambini measured.
@45 fottuto stronzo someone commented that the bore size Hambini measured was close to the limit which might indicate a new tool was used which was slightly oversized to compensate for eventual wear. I pointed out the measurement was on the small size, not the large size, which might indicate an old tool with a lot of use, or might indicate nothing at all. Are they machining every frame at a cost of ~$50 USD? Hopefully yes.
I'm impressed. I'm glad to see a brand I've never heard of doing a great job. I've always had reservations about Chinese stuff like this. My two road bikes are made in Europe. My only Chinese bike is a steel Marin mountain bike. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

I have owned four (4) ICAN frames (1 MTB hardtail, 1 duallie, 1 cyclo-cross and their latest X-Gravel frame which I use for the road with a pair of 47mm Elite carbon wheels, commute and gravel with MTB wheels and 50mm Maxxis Rambler tyres. Most versatile bike I have owned!).
Their frames have not only been consistently extremely well built, but always smartly engineered (e.g. my cyclo-cross frame could take 43mm tyres, very unusual at the time, their Gravel-X use a standard 27.2 seat post and a bullet-proof BSA BB).
This allowed me to build a triple-use bike with 2 pairs of wheels for less than USD $2,500.
Saying that, not everything is perfect dealing with these guys: a lot can be lost in translation and if you end-up being unlucky with your purchase, you may end up in a world of pain re: warranty/return costs etc. depending who you're dealing with.
Anyway, brands like ICAN give you the option to build your own bike with your chosen parts and not pay the ridiculous premium prices (and questionable design choices) of most leading brands.
Thanks for dong a video on this brand. I built up a bike using the X-Gravel frame. The frame had no faults that I could see. Everything fit easily, the bottom bracket was straight and round. The bike has performed flawlessly. ICAN is a good brand, imo.
I love the way Hambini runs out if things to say and it just ends. These are the high production values and comedy delivery we desire! I have ICAN wheels - they are superb.

I have a Carbonda CFR696 gravel frame and it's been excellent so far. No issues at all and the build was easy compared to some other frames I've built up from known brands..
Excellent customer service during the spec/order/paint and post process, emails answered immediatly during their working hours and I had one person deal with me from start to finish.
A nice custom paint job and a third of the price of a similar spec 'top brand' frame.
I got the exact same experience with Carbonda! The quality is absolutely on par with all the frames I’ve owned and the costumer service even better.
I've owned and ridden several different mountain bikes, and was in the market for something different. In the middle of the pandemic when nothing was available and bike manufacturers saw it as a licence to print money I wasn't interested in their gouging either. I ended up nervously buying an ICAN S3 which is their modern geo (500mm reach in large!) XC/downcountry bike.
I built it up with decent components, where I could get them, and a couple of secondhand pieces (forks are still hard to buy in this segment). Total price was about 2/3 that of an Epic EVO Comp - which was a 5 month wait if I wanted one...
I freaking love that bike, it is so much fun! I have reridden enduro race stages and PB'd them. So much so that I am actually seriously considering selling my SWorks Enduro because I just don't ride it any more!

For some time I've been thinking about stepping up and purchasing a carbon frame and/or bike, but have managed to find some issue with just about everything that's out there. This may finally be the deal-maker that I've been looking for. I know that everybody's on discs, but I am old-fashioned and am happy to see that they do offer rim-brake road bikes. Because, as we all know, everybody wants a good rim job if the price is right, as it is on their website. Thanks, Hambini! :D

Interesting. I have been running some Ican Aero wheels for a short time now (about 5000 miles) but so far, so good. Happy to see that they make good stuff.
I have 4 sets of wheels from them and one frame. All are built really well and the finish is excellent. I would recommend them for sure if you're looking for a reasonably priced frame or wheels without sacrificing quality.

PS, just took deliver of a BXT track frame, the quality of the molding and the stiffness is amazing.
I paid £30 extra for a painted frame...... Yeh that was the let down, I got a £30 paint job, spent a couple of hours with the 3000 wet n dry and a buffing wheel.
Finally a bit of thought has been put into the headset spacersso you don't have to decouple all the hoses and cables to adjust the height

I've got one of their track frames that is stiffer than Hambini getting his hair done. I routinely put a great deal of torque through it, and it's rock solid. Also aero AF

I have a set of ICAN's 50mm aero wheels and I have been very happy with them. Well made, well assembled, really excellent wheels.
Hope they stay true. Rode nicely for 2 years & needed a complete re spoke due to the nipples corroding to the spokes.
Couldn't hear a thing after the first 10 seconds, forgot to remove the headphones 😂🤣; kidding, I had them a good cm away from the ears in the beginning 😉; didn't knew this brand, glad to know they are striving to produce good quality items; keep the good and honest content coming our way! 👍
I own a gravel bike with a Carbonda cfr707 frame and Speedsafe wheels. Everything works well. When I received the frameset, I learned about a problem with the compression ring that appeared in the SL Tarmac. I contacted Carbonda's manager and within about a month they sent me a new, corrected ring. Great feedback! Looking at the prices and issues of some of the top brands, I will be building my next bike on a Chinese carbon frame. I hope Chinese manufacturers do not reduce the quality of their products.
Going to throw another one into the mix , I have purchased a Direwolf 29er carbon xc frameset and have to say it's incredible.
Being buying direct from China for years and have to say I've not had many bad deal's, people need get on this.
The only objection I would raise is that the frame you were sent may have been the subject of a greater attention than the average frame for the machining steps and may have been the best among a selection of frames. However, many positive elements remain.
I hope that the competition will see a drop in their sale to manufacturers such as ICAN who seem to put more pride in their work.
Your work helps putting pressure on manufacturers to raise their overall quality and I am very grateful for that.
the only people who stop buying high priced/"big name" brands are the small amount of people who have both, a great knowledge of bikes in general and dont care about showing off a name brand frame just to be a cat 6 rider. most people in cycling dont posses both of those qualities. and the poeple who arent deeply intrenched in bike culture/new riders arent gonna know how to look or will ever see bike like this they will only know what their bike shop has and the brands theyve seen over the last 10-30years.
theres not enough people like "us" to have the competition see a drop in sales... still very far from that, if at all. best you can do is know youre not falling for big name bullshit and buy a "no name" frame and build your own bike

I have a set of ICAN Aero 45s wheels which are fantastic, 1380g out of the box, UCI approved, and about as good of a price you can find on a set of quality carbon wheels. Also the customer service I've received from ICAN is top notch. I can't recommend them enough.
My Ican Aero 35 through-axle centerlock wheel have been holding up fine for the 6 months since I received them. The aero spokes are all aligned with respect to twist, and the wheels weigh 1310 grams for the pair, less than the 1359 grams quoted on the site.
Lighter than specified not always is a good sign. Cycling has jumped weight loosing bandwagon and we know how that ends up.
I bought their Aero50 disc wheels last Christmas and although I didn't put many miles on them I can vouch for Ican service and products. Far cheaper than any "branded" counterpart with equivalent specs and weight, and when I brought them to the shop that had sold me my bike to have a quick check before mounting them, they confirmed the good work done by the manufacturers. It's nice to see them recognised here, I just hope this newfound attention won't cause them to up their prices 😅😂

Seems like a VERY nice build quality. I really hope that this is the way forward in the industry and and expensively priced cheap shit eventually becomes extinct.
Update to my earlier post. I ordered the A10 rim brake version of this frame and it arrived from China about six days later (UPS), perfectly packed and in flawless condition. I don't have the means to do all of the measurements that Hambini just made (and I'm not an engineer) but my impression is the same as his. The finishing touches are really good. There are several little details that make it seem even better than my Specialized Tarmac, for example around the dropouts, the roundness of the bottom bracket shell, the cool design of the seatpost, and the way the front derailleur mount is attached to the frame. Somebody below used the expression "immaculate". I agree.. The frame is quite light. The geometry is quite aggressive, so keep that in mind; also the way they express sizes for some of the frames on their website is a bit strange. With the A10 frame, what they call size 540 actually has an effective top tube length of 570 mm. I am about 6'0" tall, 184 cm, average build, and that bike fits me perfectly. The 540 refers to the seat tube length, which is obviously not the way most companies express bike size.. Also how they list the size of the bikes on the websites depends on which frames you order. I have always found communication with them to be excellent, and if you have any questions before you order they are always quick to respond. I've been riding it this week, and it's early days, but it's a blast to ride. Considering what I paid for it is incredible.

I just received a velobuild frame and a pair of Farsport wheels which I will mount with a sensah empire pro. It will be my next bike, I was tired of following the "big brands" market and its prices, so I'm going through this "experiment". My first impressions are very positive and i'll start the building in a few days. I'm very happy to hear Hambini appreciating good chinese brands and I hope it will be the same for me when my bike will be ready to go on the road. My personal two cents is that the bycicle world is not so complicated as the big brands are trying to convince us it is, you don't need to spend 2000 euro to have a good mechanical groupset, and you don't have to spend 5000 euro to have a well made frame, if you don't need that particular brand name on the down tube or on the brake levers

I just bought their road rim brake frame -- an hour ago, actually. I hope it's as well made as the one you have but I have a lot of confidence it will be. Thats because I've had their wheels for awhile on two different bikes, one rim set, Aero 50, one disc set, Aero 55. They are excellent.

@@pierrex3226 yes, it has been outstanding. It is everything that hambini said it would be. Looking at the little details of how it is made I would say that the build quality is better than on the specialized tarmac that I bought in 2017. That is based on the things I can see and measure myself, e.g. drop outs, bottom bracket, etc.. I don't have an endoscope to check carbon layout but I do have a set of digital calipers. It is light, aero, and in every single way it has functioned perfectly. As for some other details about the interaction, it arrived about 8 days after I ordered it, meticulously packed, they threw in an extra derailleur hanger, and communication was excellent at every step along the way.

@@pierrex3226 one thing I might recommend is depending on where you live to order from either the American or the European warehouses that they maintain. Actually, mine shipped from their Chinese factory, but I might have gotten lucky and shipping from anywhere in China is really strange right now especially with all of the covid lockdowns that they are still having over there.
Would love to see some stress tests done on it.
Sample of 1 so far seems excellent as you would expect. I'd like to see you buy one in a couple months and see if teh standard holds up to non demo frames as they say it will.
How the story usually goes - unknown Chinese brands trying to break into western market need to impress, and at these *cult-following* phases they are extremely aware of online criticisms and their warranties will be extra lenient; Chinese made frames (probably by the same makers of unknown brands or the factory across the street) under some western brand umbrella don't do that. Same story goes for phones, EVs, motorcycles etc........... grab one before they go big.
I should grab one of their frame very quick. A "Hambini Certified" frame is surely gonna crank up the price here.

I have always thought that bottom brackets should have been made undersized and then line bored to ensure alignment and roundness. Looks like a manufacturer finally had the same thought.
I bought an ICAN cyclocross AC388 frame last year. Overall very satisfied, especially considering the price, less than USD750 shipped.
BB shell tolerance made for easy install and long lasting bearings. No creaks. Internal cable routing came with preinstalled foam housing running the length of the interior for trivial setup and no cable rattle.
Next frame purchase will likely be one of their gravel frames.

Great review, thanks. Only... What's your thoughts on the lower headset bearing, the way that the hydraulic hose to the brake would need to be cut (disconnected) to allow the bearing race to be replaced?

The wheels (three sets now) have been excellent. I considered a frame but their sizing was a problem for me.

this just shows how ridiculous bike pricing has become nowadays, and its got nothing to do w covid .. e.g. the new version of the trek top fuel 9.8 is $1600 CDN more than the one i bought 2 years ago (and weighs 1.5 lb more)
Not to oversimplify, but another aspect of it all is that the bigger a company becomes, the bigger their marketing budget becomes, which is passed into the price of the product. As well, if a company distributes to retailers that’s going to add to the logistical costs of moving it from country to province to state etc, which is also passed into the price of the product. Direct to consumer really helps lower overall cost.

Either way: fantastic that they’re offering their skills at this price point to those that don’t care about a premium brand on the downtube.
@45 fottuto stronzo No, not apologizing! If anything, trying to support why the opposite is better. Just providing a part of why the mainstream brands are so expensive and why the vast difference in prices between a mainstream company's bike and a direct from China bike should not be an automatic disqualifier of the quality of the bike from China. Lengthy value chains are a holdover from an older global economy and a definite archaic method. It isn't just in the bike industry.
Somehow bike pricing is ridiculous, but you have the cash to shop for nearly the top end bike from Trek. Look at Mr. Budget conscious over here. What planet are you on again?
Comparing the 2 versions, here are the additions/changes: increased front and rear travel(+20/15mm), longer reach, wider handlebar w/ larger 35.0 clamp, slightly increased tire clearance, stiffer fork, 4 piston brakes, wider rims, and larger tires. All the changes to the frame to accommodate that too. It's a different bike in a lot of ways, and COVID definitely has something to do with the price. All the manufacturers have to ship product to Trek before assembly, so you get stuck twice. The new bike deliveries have been a slow trickle though.
If you don't like the increase in weight, then it's probably not a good fit for you anyways. The Top Fuel has changed to match different riding. The weight complaint sounds just like 26" holdouts from years ago. Don't complain that a product built for someone else isn't what you want, just buy something else. Plenty of people have gotten the Supercaliber or Orbea Oiz for more "traditional" xc riding.

Thank fuck i got to the volume button in time. You almost got me again. Looking forward to a roasting. That is clearly a DI2 bike. You can put mechanical on it but with the amount of bends in the cable you will quickly realize that DI2 is the way to go.

I nearly switched off when i saw the blue vest haha. I believe this frame was an update of an earlier frame which i have in a bsa BB. 3 years on no issues.

Between cheaper frame sets and group sets, one can save a lot of money by buying Chinese. This should serve as an example to the majors. A friend of mine just built up a Trifox MTB frame set. Looks just like a Scott Spark.
Really great vid and great to see a top quality frame for not a heinous amout of money. I just went to the ICAN site but all the European stock for this frame is sold out. Similarly for the wheels. Will this be sorted any time soon? Or would we end up having to pay shipping and tax in the UK?
Hambini I'm surprised you haven't made a BB bore test plug with a center hole and long pin, and another bore test plug for the other side with an oversized hole, such that misalignment is indicated by the end of the pin not being centered in the hole. You could even have crosshairs milled into the end of the pin and on the face of the plug with oversized hole.

After watching this I decided to buy the Ican M17 29er mtb frame... I want to compete in off road duathlons and I have to keep the cost down so £400 (shipped) seems like a good start. 😉👍

Wonder how a standard set of stem + handlebar would work with this frame. I mean, you can only do so much (fit-wise) with 400/90 and 420/110. Wonder if ICAN also sell stems and handlebars.

Good video! Could you do a test like that on an Orge carbon frame? I got a Wilier Cento1Air copy from them, 6 years ago, I love that bike. It just fits me so well, and never gives me a single problem. They don't make that particular model anymore. With BB386 Evo bottom bracket by the way.
Lets get Raoul Luescher's opinion soon on this one too! Great review...... I may just buy a pair of their wheels, 40mm Rim brake though, I am not a Discotech head. My be some other head, but not a....... LOL :-)
With most manufacturers trying to out do each other with gimmicks that won't benefit the average weekend rider, they don't seem to realise all we want is the basics done well. Seems like a decent frameset that ICAN

Hi, thank you for this review. I just bought the same frame from them and mine was definitely notnas good as yours. The top headset bearing seat was uneven. Looking down the seat tube I see delaminations along its wall and I see "raw" carbon fibers sticking in from where the seat stay comes in. I can send photos if interested.

1. I first bought a set of Ican wheels 5 years ago. Felt a brave move at the time, given the suspicion towards 'Chinese carbon', but they really transformed my basic carbon Ribble. Sadly the bike was stolen just 3 months later!
2. I thought the Ican site suggests that this frame might take up to 28mm tyres? Given that 'actual' widths vary quite widely between different manufacturers it might be worth carefully reading reviews to find a 'narrow' 28mm nominal tyre that can be accommodated by the frame.
3. I know that Ican set up a European distribution centre a couple of years ago to minimise the hassle of dealing with import/customs duties but am confused whether this brings any benefits to UK buyers post-Brexit (many European component vendors won't now send orders worth > GBP130 to UK customers) or whether it's simpler to order direct from China?
Tolerances, absolutely superb. But if the BB was machined axially and then faced as well, is there a risk of delamination?
Presumably there’s a machining layer on the ID of the BB, so they’re not cutting into actual carbon fiber?? Maybe glass fiber or Kevlar or something…
How good is the "composite" that Giant uses compared to reliable carbon frames as Time or Look?

Frame SIZING & GEOMETRY ! Has no one else studied the geo chart and compared reach and stack to their other other bikes? Rather long and WAY short on the stack. If I got a correct reach frame, I'd have to use ALL the spacers to put the stem in the same place as my Colnago C64 and 30mm spacers to even match my lower Pinarello Dogma F10.
Really curious to see you do some big name frames like Colnago, Bianchi for 2022. Even some frames not in production. How about some race winning team frames!
I'm still awaiting for that. Hopefully a decent bike shop or owner sends him some Colnago and Bianchi frames for review.

Had a customer once who supplied a set a chanyon (canyon copies)1 piece handle bars to be fitted to his canyon bike,not sure if that to was fake or not but once torqued up to the 5nm as printed on its side the stem clamp it simply broke.
Customer didn’t seem too phased,
just out of interest, did you try torquing it? All good?

You didn´t mention it specifically, but the alignment of the BB was also excellent? I guess this is the kind of frames that will kick other, more wellknown, brands into the ditch. Rgr
As a satisfied owner of their wheels I somehow never considered their frames. Turns out it was a big mistake!
I have, for a number of years been riding chinarellos, because they tend to be made better than the real deal. I have had the real deal F8 2016, I bought it because I so liked the F8 chinarello that I figured the real deal would be that much better again. When I received the Real deal I was underwhelmed by the internal finish, it was worse than my 2 x chinarellos. The general finish and attention to detail is better in the chinarellos. Riding both, I couldnt tell the difference. Yes the chinarello frames are @180gms heavier (frame and fork) but thats about it. Needless to say I sold the Pinarello F8 and kept the chinarellos. I bought the chinarellos for AUD400 and AUD350 each as used from a Uni student in Sydney Australia. IMO at 1/10th the cost the chinarellos are equal to the genuine and better build. Seems ICAN are in the same class, so I can grab an ICAN 'Aeroad' as my next choice for a disc roady.
Question: You say "someone has machined the BB shell and other key surfaces". Is that STANDARD ICAN output for these OR just for your consumption? Just saw ICANs comment, Very reassuring.
I've been interested in buying a Chinese carbon frame to race on for a couple years now. My aluminum Ribble frame is okay but its heavy and not-so-aero. I was excited to find this video on ICAN's website when I was looking at the A22. On further inspection though, I discovered the geometry is a bit weird. At 405mm, the chainstays are a bit short for a disc frame. The seat tube is also more slack than I'd like. Those things would be okay but, combined with a (I think) proprietary setback seat post, it seems more like gravel geometry than road racing geometry. Additionally, if you look at ICAN's website, there are two different forks shown in the pictures of the A22. I really really wanted to like this frame, the price is great and it seems to be well built, but the geometry is odd and the inconsistencies in the website concerned me too much. I'd be really interested to see a Yoeleo or Tavelo teardown. Those are other ones I've looked at. I'm too cheap for Seka but that might be cool to see anyways.
Chinese brands are aware of the fact that big brands are asking for cheaply made frames that are being sold for silly profits.
It’s a market opportunity to produce better quality products for the same or lower sale costs, eventually they’ll flush out the big names when people get tired of tolerating over priced rubbish.
There’ll always be the brand snobs that will pay over the nose for a label and bragging rights but I feel that the cost of bikes has reached a point where something has to give in the market.
Likely this will be followed by a shift in attitudes when buyers realise they can get good quality frames without being mugged on the price.
