Finding Time For Leather…

- Hello Friends!
If you are like me, finding time for leathercraft isn't easy. The fact is, there are lots of GOOD reasons not to be in the shop... like spending time with my wife, playing with our four kids, and working a full-time job (unrelated to leather). If you can relate, I hope this video encourages you to stick with it, savor your season, and then make the most of those precious few hours with your leather and tools. Cheers, Friends!
Send me pics of your latest creations on instagram! / claridge_leather
Enjoy your season,

Brother, you just got a whole lot of respect from me. Spending time with the kids is the most important thing. My children are both grown and have their own families and...WOW, I wish they were small again so I could read to them and tuck them into bed; those days are precious and go by way to fast. Kids never forget the time daddy spent with them.
You nailed it with this one Tanner. Finding time is my biggest issue, my girlfriend recently moved out so I've had to pick up all the duties we were splitting. So of course that means all the cores around the house along with maintaining 11 fish tanks, two dogs, who are spoiled and get homemade food. I also work third shift so it feels like I have zero time for anything on normal days especially socializing with friends and family.
Family first. That's one of the reasons why I chose leathercraft, so I can spend as much time with them as possible.
Tanner say's, "A Glimpse of clarity". Yessir children are our teachers. And might I say, you sir have a beautiful family. Thank you for sharing what you do!
🙏🏼 Thank you! There are certainly our teachers, everyday!
Amen! Family first and ministry always comes first and in that order. My family is my first ministry.
Yes sir! And thanks for hopping over from IG to watch! 😀🙏🏼 God bless you, your family, and your ministry!
My 3rd shift job, and family. I get a few hours every now and again where there is nothing else going on but more often then not when that happens the house needs some kind of work done. I can agree it gets frustrating sometimes but like you said family is always worth it. I am living/working for them and they are definitely worth it.
Greetings fellow 3rd shift worker!
Good word! We still have two at home. One is autistic and the other is a type one diabetic. You're correct it can be frustrating but definitely more rewarding! God's plan is better than mine!😄
I feel the same way as you felt. I Find myself getting frustrated when I am kept from the things I enjoy. Mostly what keeps me from working in my shop as much as I would like is my daughter. Luckily I am able to take a moment and realize that I would give everything up to be able to have my daughter "interrupt" me. She is ten years old now and I am starting to see that she might not be needing me as much as she once did. So while it lasts I am thankful for the "interruptions". Sometimes I need to be able to put it all into perspective. I am grateful that she still wants to come find me and ask for my help. The help I give her means more to me than my leather craft or woodworking or welding or any of my work. Keep up the good work. The family "work"!
I can tell you’re a great parent, you’re kind and very sharing with the youtube community, great qualities man. Thats a lovely apron, you should make a tutorial for it
Ha! Yes! We can always put it aside and come back. It's better to work with a clear conscience anyway. Haha... I had knee replacement surgery in September so everything was on hold for what seemed like forever and I didnt get my dad's guitar strap done for him for Christmas, but when I finally did get it done a few weeks later, it was so nice and he was super surprised.
Hey thank you for posting that video. I live over here in Ireland I have 4 children and a wife that suffers from depression and anxiety and my time making leather is very limited but I get out to my shed when I can I just wanted to thank you because that video put some things into perspective for me I love your work you have a real talent
Stay safe

My priorities have always been family, family and family. And in that order.
I was an avid golfer in my youth but when kids came along, my compromise was to find a golf course that would allow my foursome to tee off at daybreak. We would literally be hitting first shots in darkness and play the first few holes before the greens keepers were even at work. We paid between 9's and were normally finished the game and home by 9:15 am. That allowed me to cook pancakes as the kids were just waking up. I treat leather craft the same way as it is a secondary hobby/job. My priorities haven't changed although, I gave up golf a few years ago to concentrate on other interests. Leather craft being one of them.
This week instead of getting frustrated with some things not going the way I wanted in my craft, I stopped, and watched videos all weekend, from you and other creative folks on RUclips. Man did I learn some great tricks from all the talented people out there, you included, thank you for all the great videos! I have even re-watched some old ones I have seen before. I am so happy you are doing this for everyone, and THANK YOU!! Keep them coning in-between family time
Same, bro!! It’s a challenge. God is gracious and patient with us as we work out those priorities. There are times when something has to die (at least for the moment) so that what’s most important can take precedence. Good word. Thanks for sharing. By the way, I have four kids, too. 😁
Great stuff, Tanner. Kids are incredibly moldable and it's important to mind the priorities. You're doing it right!
Thank you, Jeremy! I really appreciate that, my friend. Good to keep each other mindful of what’s most important!
How true! Wise and blessed man!
Thanks Tanner, I don't have kids, but I have dogs and the newest is a shepard with a special condition, Megaesophagus, which keeps food from being pushed through her esophagus into her stomach. She was literally staring to death when we adopted her. We built her a Bailey Chair to sit it which forces her to eat in a sit up position and she has to stay in it for at least half an hour every time we feed her which is 5 times a day. Our dogs are our family and although they take up a lot of my time along with my 'day job' I wouldn't trade them for the world. I'll get around to my leatherworking hobby soon enough and in the meantime I'll keep watching your vids to keep learning.
Hi Teila! You are so right about our animals being family as well. I am so glad to hear your special dog has such a loving family! Leather will always be there... Thank you for this!!
Tanner you are a true gentleman my friend. I have a large family myself, 7 kids to be exact. I am new to leather craft, started in Nov. 2020. I too get into the leather shop late at night when the kids are in bed. It is hard to juggle life, a small construction company (my day job), and my new found love of leather. But I make it work by many late nights. Thank you for sharing, it has made me reflect also.
Hi Tanner, know what you mean in my case is no longer the kids my daughter is all grown up and no longer lives with me, but my work does prevent me from spending the time I would like. We all have to divide time best we can.
Thanks for this positive message. Lately I’ve been getting up early before work, and before anyone else is up to work on making my leather craft videos.
Love if your channel, thanks for the great content!
Totally get this, my newborn son takes up my life, and I couldn't be more in love with the family life. Leathercraft is a wonderful craft, but family first 👍🏻
Feeling the same way, not getting enough time in the leathershop. Its occasionally hard to find time when you do night shifts and take care of two very active dogs.
My next project will propably be a rolltop backpack kind of similar that you have designed. Just bought materials from italy for it.
Aint that the truth.. I've struggled with this too. I have a daughter that requires more care and I'm not free till she goes to sleep, and even then I fall asleep and wish I didn't... One day I'll figure out a routine that works. ..
I came here for leather working videos and got something I needed even more. I have 3 young children and I’m in school full time, so trying to find the time to work on my leather projects is almost impossible. Thank you for the mindset adjustment I didn’t know I needed.
Thanks Tanner, always appreciate your videos and content. You def nailed it with this one. I have young kids and have felt the same frustrations, and I appreciate you being open and vulnerable to discuss it. I'm going to take your advise and try to enjoy this busy season of life a bit more. Also about to change jobs, move several states and life is crazy. Perfect timed message!
Good parenting, I get that "fustrastion" once in a while. And I too realize that family time is more important.
Thanks, Daniel. I think we (parents) have a lot in common in this way... Enjoy your family!!
Nice message. Thanks.
You nailed it perfectly! Family is so important, especially these days . Thank you for sharing sir!
I would love to spend more time making, but when I can't I watch people like you, so ... Win for me! :P
They’re little for only a short time. Salute.
Absolutely. The months and years go by so fast. Thanks, my friend!
Hey Tanner, thanks for this video! I felt exactly that way in these past weeks, having to move houses while working full time has been very stressful and I felt like I lost all motivation to do anything, let alone leathercraft. I sometimes get caught in all the stuff and I can’t enjoy things as a result, but thankfully I managed to pull myself out of it and get back to leather.
I’ve started a new, daunting project, which is a mix of my two biggest passions: a leather rugby ball!
Thanks for this video
Certainly can relate, keep the perspective and keep creating when you can
Agreed. I have a one year old and work from home. And the only moments for leathercraft are when my husband is home and can watch her. So weekends it is.
What a great video! Thank you for sharing
Thank you, Tanner, for this encouragement.
Sometimes as crafters, we've always dreamed of making this job full-time but it doesn't work for most of us.
We had to keep our day jobs to provide for the family.
Sometimes, I get sad whenever I could not do my leather stuff
but you are right, we should focus on our priority and that is our family.
Thank you for this video, makes me realize that there are a lot of crafters in the same situation as I am and there's nothing wrong with that :)
More power to your awesome channel! Learned a lot!
Hey, I am so glad this resonated with you! I really do think that almost all of us have to find this balance in one way or another. I know that I don’t want to regret having given up time with my family to pursue leather. Thanks for the encouragement, and I wish you all the best in your family and in your craft.
Well said mate!
Hello Tanner! Thanks for the lovely welcoming email. I love the video, you seem so 'real' which is a pleasure to see. I'm always strapped for time as a Full Time Registered Nurse, so I, like you have priorities. Fortunately(??) I'm nearing the end of my work life and have started a little business in preparation for my retirement. I love working with leather, I love the feel the smell, the different textures.
Cheers from Australia
Lorraine
Cheers, Lorraine! Thank you for that- congratulations on nearing the end of one season and beginning another!
Great perspective, Tanner! I have all kinds of plans for improvement in leatherwork and a backlog of projects to take on, all the while trying to keep up with a new puppy, work around the new house, and still find time to spend with my wife. Hoping to put in some time soon!
Thanks, Isaac! I know the feeling! Enjoy that puppy, and ESPECIALLY enjoy your wife! Leather will be waiting patiently... All the best to you, and have a blast cutting that leather when the time is right!
Have to be able to prioritize. I had to work 3 jobs to make ends meet when my kids were young. I spent as much time with them as I could, but the time I missed I can't get back. They're all grown now, and in their 30s with their own families but I try to spend as much time as I can with all of them (5 kids and 15 grandkids). Just finished restoring a 60 year old US military 1911 holster, next up is a 1934 German Luger holster then I'm making a shotgun case.
Man, I know you have done the best you can, working hard to support them, and that you savor the time you get to spend with them now. That is admirable. Enjoy that family (and your shotgun case!).
@@ClaridgeLeather I get to enjoy the family much more now, thanks. The leather work is for customers so I can spend the money on grandkids now.
I see that awesome Knick Machining mug! Great video!
Oh yeah!! Still a favorite, for sure! I ❤️ Knick Machining! Thanks, Sheila!!
Hahaha..wow ! Yes I find myself getting frustrated with my day job wishing I was making stuff in my shop..I'm a plumber so it's not too glamorous..sometimes I feel my talents is being wasted..hahaha..good point you make to prioritize!.!.love the videos ,love the enthusiasm, and your work shows your passion!🤙
"Project" sounds like pretty pompous Tanner...! Living on "scraps".. I mean leather scraps.. don't qualify for Studio time nor Labels ! Been a connoisseur of leather goods all my adult life until the Covid impasse lead me to actually experiment n dabble in scrap turnarounds to be pedalled as casual gifts...! Well I hv been hitting a pretty good note amongst the ladies..so yea it's game ON..! Hence, here to fine tune n upgrade both tooling n craftsmanship. I'm at my infancy with miles to go ! Cheers !
As i am into WFH, school time & night 10-1, could only some worthful cuts and stitches.
Work and home life keep me busy and I tend to spend my days off working on leather, I try to have my teen son join me in the shop when he isn't too annoyed with me. I'm a truck driver and tend to work 50+ hours each week.
I drive a tractor and trailer through the week hard to work on my leather project till the weekend if I'm not tied up
Boy you just nailed it family 1st With me it's my job My work can be demanding can be very rewarding but when I come home it just takes a whole lot out of me , so that's why I try to make time for it Usually on the weekend But I want to concentrate more on it so I will probably start doing it during the week also Thank you that hit it on the head.
I feel you! Enjoy this season for what it is, and enjoy that leather when you have the time! Thanks so much for watching and letting me know that it resonates with you!
This is great and it's definitely a good reminder - the day job definitely interferes with my leather and content work, but it's a great job and I enjoy it, but yes I would definitely love to have more time in the shop!
Thanks, Ethan! I don’t know what your day job is- do you mind sharing what you do?
@@ClaridgeLeather Of course - I'm a Customer Marketing Manager for a CPG (consumer packaged goods) company. Basically think marketing/sales to grocery stores.
How did you become so wise Tanner? Must be our constant phone calls 😂
😂 I need to take at least the first 60 seconds of every video to properly thank you for all the wisdom you’ve showered on me over the years which undoubtedly makes me who I am today! 🙌🏼 I am (seriously) grateful for your friendship, Ben!
Family First! My next Project will be a new Wallet.
Agreed!
Hi Tanner, I was meaning to ask you a question about a hand press I have. I bought it 2nd hand many years ago and it doesn't take threaded dies, they kinda slot in and then you tighten a side bolt. I didn't realize this and went and ordered a few dies. Obviously, they all came threaded and around 7mm in diameter. The bottom dies is fine, it just slots in, but the top opening is around 10mm with no thread for the 7mm die. What would you suggest as a workaround? Should I be looking to get hold of a threaded sleeve to tap into the top slot? Where would I even begin to get something like that or know what to ask for? I am reluctant to scrap it and get a current threaded hand press. Thanks friend.
👊👊👊
I'm going to try my hand at making a purse for my wife.
That’s awesome, Dale! That’s how I started making bags! Hopefully you have found my videos on pattern design, etc., in case you need any help there. She’ll love it!

Kids can be awful. Thank God they're also the best.
