    I started with the Lee Challenger kit. I still use most of it, like the press, powder measure, funnel. I upgraded from the hand primer to the Lee bench primer, which I think is agreat piece of kit. I also changed out the scales for RCBS, which are much better quality. But overall, the Lee kit is very good value for money and will get you into the game for relatively little coin.

      I agree. I have the Bench Prime Challenger Kit, so I started with the Bench Prime.
      The Scale is the major drawback of the kit, it is really only good for setting up a powder measure.
      And personally, I don't like the Powder Measure, as it leaks quite badly with Fine Ball Powder. (H335)

    NEVER underestimate the Lee Perfect. With ball powder, its pretty OK. However mine throws extruded powders (especially med-sm kernels like AR Comp, Benchmark, Varget) like a freaking dream. I adjust to EXACT instead of low and trickle. My adjustment to spot on is usually just a couple kernels. I have some decent kit but my Perfect has a permanent spot.
    I also like their trimmers for stuff I don't load often or in volume. Works great.

      @@BoltActionReloading I agree! My comment was directed towards future viewers, not towards you! My opinions of the Lee products closely mirror yours, at least the ones I have tried. I just wanted folks to know how great that measure is for some niche purposes. The Redding measure on the bench sees almost no usage short of the small tube and pistol loads. My Lee will certainly need to be replaced one day due to wear and tear :-) It gets a lot of use.

      I like everything Lee has. I have RCBS too and the Lee works better and is about half the cost. The Lee powder measure is more accurate and easier to use than the RCBS. I don't understand why the author of this video says the RCBS hand primer is better. I have the RCBS and Lee both and the Lee is head and shoulders above better. I wish I had started with Lee instead of RCBS. I use hardly any of the RCBS stuff now.

I have been reloading for 25 years... big thing is to keep the ram clean and oiled.. only thing I hate was the lee hand primer.. spent more time unjammig it then priming... I really like the set.. hand primer is the only thing I replaced with a good 1

    I bought Anniversary kit for $115 10 years ago and was able to reload right away. Then I've got digital scale and caliper. When I've learned about case trimming I've got some small trimming tools to make my reloading even better. I've already reloaded thousands of rounds and no problems. Highly recommend for beginners. Today I'am recieving my turret and progressive presses from Lee. Mmmmm, can't wait!

  • @mus1970
    @mus1970 3 года назад +1

    I think it's a great kit and I've used mine for tens of thousands of rounds by now, pistol as well as rifle.
    The only thing I want to add to all comments below is: as with any new (to you) piece of equipment, you have to *learn* how to use it properly. Basically goes for each component in the kit.
    The powder measure is so good and accurate I've bought a second one - only with Hodgdon H110 did it leak. For the rest: adjust it as per the instructions so it has just the right amount of drag, and don't jerk it when throwing charges - it will be spot on each and every time with basically any kind of powder.

    My classic cast is still my most used press, and I have a RL550. The classic cast has a LNL quick change bushing for my dies. It does all my single stroke tasks.. Decapping (I clean after decapping), primer pocket swaging, my rifle loads, pulling bullets with a collet puller...
    The hornady hand primer uses standard shell holders, like the ones you use with the press. That said, I feel the old lee hand primer was a better primer.
    Agree on the cutter, 100%

  • @surq0784
    @surq0784 Год назад +1

    This is an excellent video recommendation! I have the classic cast and love it! The C-frame is a great companion press for quick decapping or fast pistol brass sizing, where the longer stroke of the the O-frame gets tiring fast! The only problem with my older model is that it has an internal cavity where spent primers quickly fill up; hopefully, that's been resolved. The on-press priming system was trash, and the way my ram was clocked, wouldn't even function with it. Lee sent a different adapter, but it wasn't much better and I wasn't about to adjust all my dies, so I went with the RCBS universal hand-prime instead. It was a much better investment, and way faster than press priming. The lever on the Lee classic needs a much needed improvement, though. I had a spare Dillon handle and it fit perfectly. Also, there's absolutely no reason why Lee SHOULDN'T include the ball handle on their trimmer! I used to rock climb and my grip is greater than most, but after trimming 30 cases, I'm about to chuck that thing out the window! I don't care if they have to add to the price, it just needs to be in there. Other than that, solid press all-around!

    I myself, prefer RCBS gear, but i have loaded ammo on Lee equipment and managed to produce sub MOA accurate rounds with no effort at all. the equipment is a little cheaper and not quite as heavy but it is clean, precise and accurate. Lee equipment is just fine and if its what you can afford, i say go for it.

    Unless you need the power of a "O" 0r "C" press, the Lee Turret is wonderfull. You interchange calibers, and the always stay preset for the next batch. I prefer a Hand primer, you can feel each primer go or no go, while watching TV

      Plus 1 here. I have the classic turret, 4 hole, with indexing rod. Also the lee flow through powder measure. When I start reloading a new caliber I get another 4 hole press head for that set of dies. Absolutely simple, set once and forget.

    I absolutely love the primer system on this press. I don’t deprime on this press. I keep dirt and carbon away from presses. Especially when it is made from aluminum. The quick trim is amazing when you upgrade the handle so you can use a drill. I use a black & decker hybrid power screwdriver/drill. Every twenty five rounds you have to blow out the die and cutter. ( I use a small box.) Plus you need to make sure to wipe the case holder off if a shaving is sitting on it. Which in turn will cause to trim at a different length if you don’t. The different caliper die cutter holders are not that much. I can really process my brass faster between the primer system and the quick trimmer. And my hands don’t hurt. The Harley deprimer tool is an amazing as well.

    I have been using the old style lee anniversary kit, ( does not have the prime on press feature ) , but I have literally loaded 100s of thousands of rounds with it. I did end up getting the lee bench primer, once you get used to it's querks it works well. I have never really considered a different press, and I have worked up a few 308 palma loads that shoot one ragged hole at 100 yds. I can't complain.

    • @seantierney3
      @seantierney3 3 года назад +1

      the lee beam scale is just as accurate as any other. The two reasons that people don't like them is they are annoying to change the setting, and that it only goes up to 110 grains making it not very good for sorting components.

    • @chuckfinley3152
      @chuckfinley3152 3 года назад +1

      The lee scale is very sensitive but the system for .10's of a grain sucks, and you gotta make sure the razor blade is seated correctly.

    • @tyler6147
      @tyler6147 3 года назад

      I have a little Lee scale but I never really sort components (although I might in the future). I had a string of bad luck with electric scales so now I have like 4 or 5 that all suck. In other words I've been shopping for scales for several years with no luck. One of these days I will fork out the money for a good scale if I can find one.
      I'm really wondering if the Lee scale is able to be "more fine" than other beam scales. The others go to 500grains and the Lee 100 so I'm wondering if there is any way to see if there is a noticable difference in accuracy.

    After 5 years of reloading I've upgraded many things. However the press remains the same a lee breach lock challenger.
    At first I thought the press was holding me back but it honestly is all the prep to be ready to load. anything that makes all the steps easier to get to the point of primer powder and bullet is what I'm after. The reloading process is much more enjoyable when the mundane steps are handled in a timely fashion. I will still load my all my rifle round on the breach lock I enjoy the process. however I'd like to speed up my pistol reloading on a dedicated progressive.

    I have been reloading now for roughly 26 years and have not up to now ever needed a "stuck case removal tool".
    Also, the Lee chamfer and deburring tool, although not ideal, is functional. Unlike the Lyman, it makes is less likely to chamfer excessively when using the powered option. The primer pocket cleaners, again, not great for hand use, but does fit quite nicely in a drill.

If your definition of FL sizing is setting your die against your shell holder and adding a half a turn you have not idea how much you are moving your shoulder back. .002 to .003 is all you need. More than this and you are probably causing some shortened brass life. You really need a comparator if your setting up your sizing die. Hopefully this is clear, if not let me know.

    Does any company make something similar to the “classic lee loader”? So you can do everything without a press? Lee doesn’t have a set up for 6.5 creedmoor. Doesn’t even have to be a kit I’d buy the parts individually if I have too

    Buying into reloading can become addictive, expensive too. Going to a gun shop or show and seeing a gun you like is fatal when you reload, especially if you have an inclination for various disciplines for which you need different guns and cartridges. Then you upgrade tools for efficiency, or accuracy, or cause you want to try it out, see if it works better or not. It can be a rabbit hole, but, very rewarding in what it enables you to do. Over 40 yrs I don't think I've spent 5000.00 on tools yet, a couple of cartridges paid for them all, and future ones in what I saved on them over factory over the years, and I've been able to shoot various disciplines I had a lot of fun at, that I probably would not have ever looked at if I didn't reload.

    Great video. I got into reloading about 30 years ago. I am not even sure how much stuff I have anymore. I do agree with you that it's a good value and that buying the parts individually would be better. I however am very much not sold on digital scales. I have a couple but check them against my Reading beam scale regularly. I have not had good luck with digital scales. Really enjoy the video thanks

      Hi Aaron, Thanks for the comment. Knowing what you all you want to do with it before you start is a big thing that I think people just don't know when they get started. Until you start going through it, make a few mistakes, and get a process down that works for you, it may work or you may have wished you went another way. My experience with digital scales is there are a lot of ones that are just plain junk, especially in the low end. But now I have had a couple good ones that I almost never have to rezero and the read very consistently, I could never work on a beam scale. I know some guys love them and that is fine for them, just not for me.

    Just started reloading last year; and because I had a free Lee Challenger press I was able to build a kit. So my two cents; the Lee Auto Bench Primer ($25.49 at Titan as I type) is my preference. I have tried on the press priming and prefer the Bench Primer. I have a Hornady primer and the Bench primer is simply less fatiguing. I ended up with several Lee presses (including the Load Master), so far I like the Challenger and the Breach Lock Pro.
    From my experience (and watching some good youtube vids) I think avoiding the kit and building your own along the way is the way to go. But; as you pointed out. There are times you have to settle for what is in stock if you want to start now. Which is not really all that bad since in your use case, as you gain experience, other kit will be preferable. But that experience is going to cost money. :^)

  • @norcal5040

    If I could only give one piece of advice to new reloaders it would be to stay away from brass trimmers that have a pilot which gets inserted into the neck. You don't trim until after you size, and all that stupid pilot does is gall up your necks, tweak them out of round, etc. Biggest headache relief ever was getting the L.E. wilson trimmer ($153 currently), but other options like the Worlds Finest Trimmer caliber specific can be had for much cheaper ($75) or ($99) for swappable cartridge specific chambers.
    So I'm glad you didn't recommend any of those, because I'd much rather use that Lee cutter IMO.

      I do most use mostly extruded powder (imr4064 & varget) but also recently helped a friend on his 45colt with TiteGroup ball powder. The titegroup dispensed very accurately from my chargemaster lite and I like the “Powder Pal” because it has a big lip that prevents powder kernels from bouncing out.

    If your doing 30-06 sized cartridges, the C press is a real pain to seat bullets. You have to place the bullet into the die, and then raise brass, cant fit bullet on top of brass.

    • @BoltActionReloading
      @BoltActionReloading  3 года назад

      The difference in the ram stroke between the 2 is only 1/4" I am not sure that this is going to make a substantial difference one way or another. I think long cases like 30/06 is just the nature of the beast., especially if you are using a seating die that has the sliding collar. (Hornady) Gotta lift it with your finger every time. My take on the kit is getting the best experience you can for the lowest cost to get started. The C press has been a lot of guys second press for decapping, etc. I think its good enough to find out if you like to reload or not.

      If your going to use it forever, I agree the O press is far superior, but a lot of guys want to get their feet wet and see if they are even going to use the equipment. I hear far to often that they pick the kit entirely over budget, I wanted to give these guys a alternate idea of something to step the initial quality lever of the "kit" up a bit when they start. I have seen the C frame presses going for $20 in the past and a lot of guys pick them up just to decap or even seat at the range.

    • @BoltActionReloading
      @BoltActionReloading  3 года назад

      @@paulstarnes3112 what lee "promotes" in their manual has nothing to do with what they state the equipment is capable of, or requires people to use it that way. They claim that their scale is good to measure .05 gr. "If only 2 lines are visible (plus a tiny amount on either side),
      you are then exactly halfway between graduations and reading to
      .05 ( 1/20 ) grain." Marketing matters. I am not telling anyone that the scale dies not work, but when you start getting to a $50 scale there are better options that will work for trickling and are much faster to get your reading than watching the arm of the scale bounce. Some people weigh every charge, some throw charges either is fine but Ill pay a extra $8 any day to get a scale that is accurate, responsive, I can load a ladder test without having to touch the beam, and I can trickle on. Personal preference is just that personal.
