    My brother in law was in charge of the receiving end of shipping vessels at a large US port. He made the decisions of what ships were unloaded - where and when. He was routinely “bribed” by Chinese ship captains to place their vessels first in the queue. Time was money and they needed quick turnarounds. Bribes included cash, soft drinks, liquor and even free pencils all of which he declined (The pencils were hand delivered by a Chinese lady’s “daughter” who boarded the vessels; the elder “mom” routinely visited the port to sell pencils to the incoming crew. These ship hands must have been prolific writers.) It’s quite sad that this kind of bribery stuff happens at our US ports and even convention centers.

    Last month I was on a week-long cruise to Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta on the Navigator of the Seas. We were unable to dock in berth 2 at Puerto Vallarta so the captain skipped the stopped and went to Mazatlan. No ships went to Puerto Vallarta that day and the harbor master was denying docking at berth 2 which is where the ship always docks and best accommodates the ship. Berth 1 had a broken mooring anchor and berth 1 the ship hangs out into the channel which both issues are dangerous so captain James says we aren't going.

    • @danasandoval624
      @danasandoval624 3 месяца назад

      We notice it more because we have content creators that always report it, I bet if we had people that watched hotels or tall buildings we would see a lot of people that sadly jump from those too.
      It’s sad for both the person doing it, their family & friends and the others on the cruise that don’t even know them are affected.
      Yes Boy George is still out there he was living with one of the Housewives couple that was his manager. The only thing he ever sings is his one hit and pretty much nothing else. I would have thought they could have gotten pretty much anyone else that would have been more entertaining than him.
      Good for that captain for not paying any bride, I would hope the person over the guy that tried to get paid a bride would make sure he is fired & all the cruise lines know it.
      Sadly these stops that the country has experienced unrest are not safe for some time afterward and I am glad the cruise lines don’t put their passengers in any danger even when the country is claiming they are perfectly safe. We all know tourists are looked at as wealthy people and often an easy target.
      We were recently on a cruise that was supposed to stop at Labadee but didn’t, hopefully sometime in the future they will get back there. But until we really know it’s safe it’s best to avoid risking the passengers safety.

    Unfortunately corruption is a big problem in the Philippines but as far as I know, not sure how their government works exactly, but maybe when the governor of Cebu hears about this she, Gwendolyn Garcia, will end up firing him. I think that she's a no nonsense type of person who wants only good things to happen in Cebu and hopefully she'll frown at this guy for asking for bribes.

    In the cruise industry these extra payments to facilitate good service are not called bribes. They are called a gratuity and everyone is expected to pay them.
    If you don’t value the service that the port is offering and you withhold paying the gratuity, you can expect not to receive as good a service.

    I haven’t been on Azamara cruise lines, but I’m looking forward to traveling on them as they are a small ship and all inclusive. I am retired Navy and I know the Philippines is terribly corrupt. Bribes bribes, and more bribes are the name of the game. However, when it comes to legitimate above board big business transaction, such as this one, they better get their act straight. The Philippines represents a huge tourist destination with absolute beauty. Philippines will not survive as a tourist destination if they don’t real in this inherent corruption.
