    My personal trick with car painted plastic parts is to use brake fluid or Power steering fluid as a paint stripper. Have been using that trick for over 20 yrs. It attacks enamels and lacquers really well but doesn't hurt ABS, polycarbonate, and other plastics used in cars and motorcycles. it literally melts the paint off. If urethane was used on the part, scuffing it with coarse sandpaper would be needed to break through that layer. Brake and PS fluid are mostly synthetic or natural mineral oil with additives and those additives are what make the magic happens. Great video!

      I spilled some brake fluid in the box of my truck and bubbled the paint like stripper. Thanks for watching commenting and Subscribing.

      I spill brake fluid on my rim all the time when changing it and it doesn't buble the paint at all

      @@mhxxd4 most likely powder coated or painted with polyurethane. Both pretty resistant to solvents and brake fluids.

    Sunlight is the key to using brake fluid. I tried a heat gun with brake fluid and it simply evaporated the brake fluid and by the time the paint was affected the plastic was also melting.
    I soaked one piece in the garage with brake fluid for three days, the paint eventually began to wrinkle. Then I put two pieces in the sun with brake fluid and the new piece reacted as much in 30 minutes as the other piece did in three days. So it's the sunlight and not heat.
    I hit the treated pieces with the pressure washer and most of the paint blew off. But I'm off to get some laquer thinner, looks like it's the fastest.

    Dirt bikes plastic is PE and some cases HDPE (polyethylene or high density polyethylene), in most cases any paint stripper will work. In the road bikes plastic is ABS and not any stripper or solvent will work.

    Wd40 brings out the shine and red in the plastic, they get orange from time in the sun. Damn that thinner worked great. Thanks for letting us hangout with you again for another fun project Ed.

      I have used Wd40 but it doesn't seam to last too long. Think I'm going to buff them. Little compound and a warm wheel might bring up the shine.

    oven cleaner or purple super clean soak over night ,, keep doing it until its stripped , Usually it bubbles up After 12 hours or so.. does nothing to plastic... Super clean purple works best...It's a multi-purpose cleaner that you dilute To clean floors and shop degreaser... Just use it straight from the bottle don't dilute.... The Problem with plastic case you never know how it's going to react,, because all the different types of plastic Super clean is the safest way

    BIG WARNING!! dirt bike plastics are Polypropylene not ABS if you use thinners on ABS it will melt it! especially acetone

    Turpentine will do the same as the thinner as a cheaper option. Personally I'd use the stripper, since it doesn't need a rag laid over it & its environmentally friendly. Interesting video though.

    Thanks for this information Ed. I'm just wondering if thinner would work equally well for different types of paint. I am trying to remove old paint which is most likely acrylic paint from an ABS hull (RC model). The model is rare so I don't want to risk ruining it.

    • @rustyedmoore
      @rustyedmoore  3 года назад +1

      Not sure about ABS. I would hesitant due to it being a form of Styrene. Mechanical removing would be the safest. Thanks for watching commenting and Subscribing.

    For ppl that come here and want to know what works, if it's rattle can paint (enamel) just use Duplicolor Prep - solvent base not the water base. Acetone also works but takes more effort.

    I have multiple layers of spray paint over a very beautiful factory paint. Any ideas how I can get those layers off without damaging stock paint?

    • @rustyedmoore
      @rustyedmoore  2 года назад

      That's going to be a tough one. I can't guarantee any way to get it off. More than likely you will need to respray. I would try in a inconspicuous place using the least harsh chemical first. See what happens. You might luck out and find something that works and you won't need to respray. Worst case you'll have to respray but you already new that. Best of luck thanks for watching and subscribing.
