Doug, as I watch I think of more questions, hope you don’t mind? Can you hang your pot with parachute cord or does it have to be wire? Also, have you ever tried the Siberian log fire, seems they put out the heat but don’t require much maintenance? Or one of the fires that stacks logs between two sets of poles, maybe they self feed? Love your channel, keep the videos coming when you safely can. Take care.
Doug, somewhere I have my Dads old wool blanket from WW2. I love how God created all these natural materials that in some ways are still superior to anything man makes. Cotton is such a versatile product, and for me, there’s still nothing like a cotton T-shirt, and who can argue about wool being one of the greatest clothing products still after 1000’s of years. I just saw Woniya on Buckskin revolution talking about the wool pants she used to win Alone as the first woman. They were high quality, hand made, hundreds of dollars but when your life is on the line, what’s a few bucks, right. And let’s face it, I’ve never seen a sheep shiver, lol. Plus I think of the Buffalo. Their coat is so thick they can face way below zero and blizzard winds, and they go through with ease. Thanks for sharing your adventures

You forgot to mention warm clothing and boots plus the food you brought with you, a good display of skills though, however it would have been a different story in a heavy snowstorm with driving winds, doable but much more difficult, why I would prefer to always have a large tarp with me. You are younger Doug, wait till you hit 75, that's where I'm at. Sorry Doug, but you have to accept the fact that there are people that are your enemies because they choose to be and would kill you or harm you just for sport, that is something you cannot change.

I understand what you are saying. No none of us is perfect, we all have our faults. But when we find that we have fallen down, we need to reach down inside and find the strength to get back up, and continue our journey.
Brrrrr, looks very 🥶 cold, enjoyed the video. Thanks. Cheers from me another Doug in Oklahoma, where it’s been a pretty mild winter!, oh ps, I ve experimented with wool this year, for me I’ve decided down is warmer to me.
Somewhat mild winter here and not much snow (for NH). I was excited that there was enough snow in the White Mts for snowshoeing. Yes, I'd say down is warmer if you keep it dry. IMO wool performs better if damp or wet. For practical purposes, I like the synthetics these days. I generally use wool for nostalgia, demonstrating old ways, etc. It works very well. The only issue for me is wool is heavy.
I think you would get a lot of views if you did an overnight demonstration with that soap dish kit you made . Or even an Altoid kit overnight challenge. Id love to see you do it.
I will be filming more overnight demonstrations and challenges. I haven't been posting as many per year as I would like. (-due to family responsibilities, work, etc). But things may be changing to where I can post more frequently. So I don't have an estimate for when it will be. But it would likely be the Altoid Survival Kit, or that first (before the diy, soap dish survival kit). That DIY soap dish survival kit video of mine has around 3 1/2 thousand views. It doesn't seem like many people are searching for that term, etc. There are Altoids Survival Kit videos with millions of views. So if I did that one first, then the soap dish video might perform better. At least those are my thoughts. Thank you so much for your interest in these videos. (edit for clarity)
@@DougShoeBushcraft may i suggest that before you do the altoid overnight challenge. Do a separate video before hand on the items you put in the kit ....... @@DougShoeBushcraft using trash or items outside the kit defies the purpose of an Altoid kit .. the whole concept is that you only have a small amount of space to work with

Hatchet. Pocket knife. Bush pot. Wool blanket. And what ever food brought. Not a bad emergency shelter. Good fast fire. On track. At a bad boy center called thistle dew. They give you some snare wire . That very Pocket knife and one can of food. Your out there for one to two weeks. Oh you do get one blanket and that is your haver sack as well. Winter you get a boy scout Hatchet. You are expected to find your food and make shelter. You get graded on your progress. For them it means early release.
snowshoes a must if you go into woods in winter ( areas where it snows ) flashlight important ability to make fire...most important getting out of elements ( wind precipitation ) important I guess if you had good wool blanket it would be big benefit having a pot seems crucial ( hydration) good hearty meal seems important. ..so takeaway is as always GO PREPARED. ( did you know you were in bigfoot area? notice the second tree broken at about 9' ? ...other signs too )
Great video as always Doug. I was surprised you didn't create more of a roof or close the back in more. I guess that if it's not blowing a gale there's no need, but me... being as pedantic as I am, I couldn't leave it that way. 😂 How was the canned stew? Some of them can be pretty good. If you're hungry enough it probably doesn't matter though. Anyway, thanks again for the great video. One week to go until my hip surgery. I'll drop you an email when I'm out of surgery and let you know how it went.
I ran out of time and energy on the roof construction. What I ended up with was a little roof to huddle under if it snowed. I was out of the wind on 3 sides from digging into the snow drift.
👍👍👍 .. nice. A good demonstration of Basic Skills .. the relevant boxes duly ticked 😊. Using existing Natural Features to enhance a Shelter (properly clothed for the conditions, somewhere to sleep on, in and under) .. the '5 C's' .. Shelter / Hydration / Nutrition and with an additiona external Heat Source, all taken care of. That said, to reiterate (even if only to drum it into my my head 😏) .. one should never be caught knowingly or willingly in such situations (or any at that) inadequately prepared. Also, in no way detracting from your, Doug's setup, with the Technology at our disposal in this day and age, it is noteworthy how very little 'additionals' would add value to such a situation .. i.e. .. Tarp, Closed Cell Foam Pad, Fixed Blade Knife, Folding Saw and such. Yes, 'how much is too much' and conversely, 'how little is too little'? All in all, an excellent Post .. and the Words at the end, Inspirational! Thank you for that .. take care ..
It was a new camp spot. I dug into a snow bank in order to create 3 walls of the shelter. Also it's easier to keep a fire going on the bare ground then on top of snow
You found a great spot then. I also liked your what appeared to be a Birch bark roof? I’m getting ready to finish watching. I was too tired last night just watching you dig in the snow, lol. Take care and stay safe out there.
@@jerrytalley802 It's a birch bark roof. The reason the snow bank was there is because the wind blew snow against a fallen birch tree. So I peeled bark from the dead tree and used it to shingle the roof. I ran out of time and energy, so the shingled area of the roof wasn't as large as I would have liked. I had enough roof to huddle under if it snowed.
I watch a lot of survival videos, I've never actually been out, correct me in my logic here; I'd be tempted to take cordless tools out with me, for example a reciprocating saw, a couple of batteries and a dozen blades?
a large fire wouldn't go out if you dumped a bush pot of water on it. I've never had an accident like that in real life. I know it wouldn't put a large fire out because I have intentionally doused fires with water thousands of times. If you had just got your fire going and then somehow dumped the entire bush pot of water on it then you could put out your fire. Personally, I'd do it and just be careful.
@@MissT167 none close to that location with green pine needles. The shelter you see is basically what I could get done in the time and energy I had. I snowshoed to the location, so I had part of a day to build the shelter, get firewood, etc
Iron Ration was issued to British soldiers in WWI. It comprised... 1 lb. preserved meat 3 oz. cheese 12 oz. biscuit 5/8 oz. tea 2 oz. sugar 1/2 oz. salt 1 oz. meat extract
I'm curious why you didn't make a hemlock or pine bow roof? You're much more experienced than I ,so apparently you didn't find it necessary, what would have happened if it snowed or freezing rain? I do enjoy watching your videos though.
In some areas I can't cut live trees. If it snowed or freezing rain then I had enough roof to huddle under. The roof would have been bigger but I ran out of time and physical energy. On had about half a day to build the shelter and gather firewood etc while also filming

Nice!! Up in NH 🎉🎉🎉 So beautiful
I think so, too
Looked like a cold night doug
During the day it wasn't too bad, but the low at night was cold
snowshoes a must if you go into woods in winter ( areas where it snows ) flashlight important ability to make fire...most important getting out of elements ( wind precipitation ) important I guess if you had good wool blanket it would be big benefit having a pot seems crucial ( hydration) good hearty meal seems important. ..so takeaway is as always GO PREPARED. ( did you know you were in bigfoot area? notice the second tree broken at about 9' ? ...other signs too )
I've seen many things a lot stranger than a tree broken 9' up.
PRAISE HIS HOLY NAME !!!!
Sometimes when im home alone I like going in my garden and cover myself with dirt and pretend I'm a potato
Oh my. Is that a dirt nap!
do you identify as a potato ?
Do you teach a class on these lessons? I know I could always use a refresher on this stuff.
Hi. I have enjoyed your video. I'm just wondering why you would dis-assemble your campsite?
I adore you Doug from Jacqueline Wichita ks
You get and Folding saw. make gathering wood easier. good video. But you should had twice the wood.
I agree. I like to feature different tools in various videos. A cool, little folding bow saw is coming in a camping video soon........
Nice video. Well done.
Also… it has become rare to hear a Christian talk about not having or seeking out enemies. Good on you.
Doug, were you digging out a previous camp spot or a totally new one, I can’t tell. Always enjoy your manner and content, thanks
I watch a lot of survival videos, I've never actually been out, correct me in my logic here;
I'd be tempted to take cordless tools out with me, for example a reciprocating saw, a couple of batteries and a dozen blades?
In a survival situation I would never hand water or snow over my fire. One small bump or wind could put your fire out and wet your wood.
a large fire wouldn't go out if you dumped a bush pot of water on it. I've never had an accident like that in real life. I know it wouldn't put a large fire out because I have intentionally doused fires with water thousands of times. If you had just got your fire going and then somehow dumped the entire bush pot of water on it then you could put out your fire. Personally, I'd do it and just be careful.
I was wondering why you didn't cover your roof with pine leaves..I saw lots of pines that fell down ..
I can't always cut up live trees. It depends on where I am and permission, rules, etc.
@@DougShoeBushcraft No pine trees fell on the ground ..?
@@MissT167 none close to that location with green pine needles. The shelter you see is basically what I could get done in the time and energy I had. I snowshoed to the location, so I had part of a day to build the shelter, get firewood, etc
Iron Ration was issued to British soldiers in WWI. It comprised...
1 lb. preserved meat
3 oz. cheese
12 oz. biscuit
5/8 oz. tea
2 oz. sugar
1/2 oz. salt
1 oz. meat extract
are there any army navy stores left? Used to use wool blankets from WWII in the 60s.
There is one in Conway NH
New subscriber and I get you and where your coming from.
