Agreed I think I tell him that every damn time I make a comment that honest to God he does such a good job of asking the right questions and then letting them kind of tell what they want to tell and what they're comfortable talking about. I seriously think he does a better job and gets better operators and badasses on his show then I think anybody else that's a hell of a lot more popular his podcast is and I think that's a shame. Delta Force interviews are immediate clicks. This channel is the best, he seems to have the most UNIT interviews. I just wish Chris Valley could be interviewed. Look him up.

He was associated with William Lavigne, a Delta soldier who killed his best friend, a SF soldier, and was then eliminated during a drug deal. Who kills a CAG guy? So many unanswered questions about these 2. Is it PTSD? I worship the UNIT, I was shocked to read about these 2...

If ST6 was doing crazy sh*t, I had to ask: is CAG doing the same? Not really, but there have been several problematic Operators... The other fascinating article from NY Times is about "Talon Anvil," a small group of drone operators in Syria that were led by CAG members who basically controlled which targets were destroyed. It led to many civilian casualties and the article is a great read. It's from Dec. 2021.

Ryan - I'm active duty in the 101st and I've listened to ~75% of your episodes. This one may be my favorite. The Delta guys are obviously all of our idols here and this guy is great to listen to. It amazes me how the most badass dudes on earth don't "act badass" all the time. Would love to see you have him back again some time. Wish you all the best and thanks for your service.
Thank you, Ryan. To me, the greatest byproduct of podcasting is giving these Delta heroes an outlet to tell their stories. I served in the 80's(USMC) and you NEVER heard about the exploits of these warriors. 30-40 years later I am so grateful these guys are willing to tell their stories. They are the BEST America has to offer. The bravest of the brave.

At about the 58m mark, the operator talks about standing on the flight line, watching the rescue operation for Jessica Lynch depart.. His description of the grit, determination and focus of the rescue team exactly fits what I know of our armed forces. He describes it as giving him goosebumps and I know the exact feeling he's speaking about and I share it 100%. #RLTW
As someone who's known Derek since he was Daly and McChrystal's driver, it was hard knowing what he has gone through and can say that he is one of the most incredible people I've ever had the honor of knowing and working with. He has been the person that even someone who was in country but a non-combat veterans like me can easily talk too

I enjoy learning more about the military details. My dad turned 19 and 20 in nam, he was a awsome dad and he didnt have a bunch of medals but to me him and all his nam pals were USA hero war fighters. Monday night football was at our house, after i turned 10 years old he let me have a beer with them. It was one of my top 5 favorite days ever. They were great men.
So I work security in Asbury park New Jersey and as I'm hopping on route 18 to go westbound back out to Fort Dix where I live near Trenton I'm passing a sign saying New Brunswick as I'm listening to you guys talk about it there's just a little irony I figured I'd share but love the podcast overall listen to it on my long drive home pretty much every night 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Whoa! This dude went from A Squadron to the Units premier Reconnaissance Cell aka “G Squadron”. This one of the hardest areas of the Unit to get into, made up of mostly older senior guys. They take on the more clandestine missions often operating in areas and countries where if they get into trouble, there is no QRF or back up coming to get them. They’re almost completely on their own.
@@NotOnDrugs Shrek did a lot of low viz stuff, but to my knowledge he spent his whole Unit Career at A Squadron. Lol if you saw how big Shrek was as a man you would probably have a good laugh picturing him in a unit like G Squadron.
@@nickjohnson710 .. I’m Not sure. I thought E Squadron was like a mix of AFO Recce guys from all over the UK SF spectrum? 22, SBS, SRR, 18th Signals, SFSG etc?. US JSOC has a AFO program similar to that created by a Delta Force Colonel in the late 90s named Pete Blaber. The concept was basically about hand picking a select few recce operators from across all the SMUs and making a rock star element of reconnoissance men (and women.)

I can just imagine the hell you caught for launching the start button grenade on that one mission! Lol. I'm sure at least one teammate said, "This is the guy who just finished sniper school? Really? This same guy who just launched a grenade a football field over the target?" Lol. Then the next mission where your rifle malfunctioned, just had to be icing on the cake. Just the overall sounds of constant full auto machine gun fire, then to hear "phoomf", had to make your teammates grin from ear to ear again! Thanks again Ryan for such a great episode!

Love this interview! So glad you interview Delta operators instead of being like everyone else and interviewing Navy Seals. No disrespect to the Seals, my Grandfather was an original Frogman in WW2. Unit guys do not get enough credit for what they do. They are truly the best of the best. Every Unit guy is a tier 1 operator. Only Seal Team 6 (DevGru) is tier 1.
Most people don’t realize they have obstructive sleep apnea. Many people go undiagnosed, and I have severe sleep apnea so to hear him talk about it was really awesome.
For a while you have hit a stride as an interviewer and journalist that few are abe to achieve. I truly appreciate your work. One of the few shows I look forward to seeing.
Right off the bat, you did a fantastic job describing just what traumatic brain injury is and how it pertains to you. That is not easy, or easily understood. Second, the guitars on your wall. . .holy shit! All the respect.
I am a retired TBI neurologist, having worked at Fort Benning, GA for 12 years. I have been a neurologist for 28 years. TBI is THE unseen, non discussed injury of the military. It is often indistinguishable from PTSD, symptoms overlap making each defineable and treatable. Unfortunately society is aware of PTSD but not TBI. Our sm's get TBI's in combat and in garrison, training accidents, combatives, explosives and all the civilian causes such as falls etc. The ethos in the military leads to many not seeking medical attention. I am glad to see this episode bringing this issue attention.
I love your channel Ryan! I have really enjoyed all your interviews. This one stands out though. He just has such a remarkably good perspective on so many things. For example, showing deference to the soldiers on the other side. I dont think I would have the ability to do the same. PS. Derek, love the Gold Top hanging on your wall!

All of these interviews hit me a little different. After a long career in the special operations community it's good to hear how these pipehitters cope. I've been retired for 9 years now and still haven't figured it all out yet.
I have tears and chills listening to his story. When he spoke of how detrimental it was to his mind as he forced himself to not think about his family when he was on missions is both heart wrenching and amazing at the same time. The mental aptness and the ability to have that much focus on his “job” is awe inspiring. As a civilian, it is truly fascinating and emotional to hear these stories of hero’s. For me, I can’t even imagine what you and the men and women you’ve had on your podcast have gone through mentally and physically. I feel we as regular, everyday people DO NOT give the true amount of respect and admiration that all of you deserve. Thank you for your podcast. I’m a die hard listener and forever thankful you bring these stories to life.

Oh man. I had a "head injury" some years ago. I don't really remember the next couple weeks except for the fact that thinking gave me a headache and I think I'm having memory problems and some other mental problems, hard to explain. I am fully aware that my behavior is a little off sometimes. My childhood is a blur, nothing is sequential, all scattered, and I've often wondered just how bad the injury was. I also occasionally have random, weird, bizarre night sweats. I'll wake up almost frozen stiff, almost panicked in a puddle of my sweat. I've never known why, but it's interesting.
1:18:07 “I would be lying by omission if I just didn’t tell you that it was man-hunting.” 1:18:12 He corrected himself and referred to his opposition as his adversary and not his enemy. This guys is smart and honest, I have mad fucking respect for his ability to be at the top of his profession and call a spade a spade. Absolutely respect that.
I know it's pretty redundant to make comparisons to other units but I feel like former CAG guys have a certain ora about them. I watch so many interviews with former special operations people and there's just something different with the unit guys. JSOC as a whole is head and shoulders above any other military organizations in the world. It's not even close.
Gonna have to disagree with you I think overall the, ISRAELI Forces are very top notch, their readiness is under none. maybe? We have a very big & massively great funding; pool. With an all voluntary force,yes. Very good especially at JSOC WAS NEVER THERE AS A TROOP. Had the opportunity too as a CCT JTAC FOR CSAR FROM THNONE. in country but wanted to be on ground regardless SO, choose to work with a Marson team instead. I was across the street from + have many friends that went up the, Hill. + on the Farm with Cag + the security platoons and of couse the CCT GREEN TEAM. GUYS PLUS ALL THE RANGES AND STRESS COUSES/ SHOOT HOUSES ALONG WITH THE MASSIVELY AWESOME RESOURCES FOR THE GYMS/ POOL. So Forth is great. However in ISRAEL 🇮🇱 DEATH IS ALWAYS SOMETHING THAT IS KNOCKING AT DOOR FOR EVEN CIVILIANS SO MOST LOVE GOING TO DO THEUIR JOB. They are always everyday having combatant operations take place and they have quite a bit of funding as well: not only that their Special operations Forces are top notch. + truly dedicated ready for saving life or going on a suicide mission for their & many of us how wish through CHRIST. LORD God YHWH YAH-HE-WAH-HE JEHOVAH FATHER of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: + many are gaining the MESSIAH LORD ALMIGHTY AND SAVIOUR CHRIST JESUS OF NAZARETH IN THEIR LIFE. SO I WOULD RANK THEM NO 1. OVERALL. 2. US EXCELLENT I cannot go against my brothers was in 1st Force Reconnaissance Co. 5 years Then: AFSOC as a CCT for 6 years. 3. South African Special Police Force 1 or 2 make it every single class. +++ . Even better: they read from the HOLY BIBLE EVERY MORNING.
@@aueyburroughs1143 you were a cct? i find that a little hard to believe. it's pretty much unanimous from many former special operations veterans that JSOC is head and shoulders better than any other organization on the planet. I agree israel is elite but they simply lack the budget and talent pool along with the gear. CAG is King and it isn't even close.
Wasn't JSOC created from advice from,22 SAS? It's a huge Squadron, right with all the bells and whistles ,but did you know that CAG don't need JSOC to deploy, they have there own support, CAG are a stand alone unit, that's why they were created, but yeah, for sure there some of the best
@@nickjohnson710 CAG was created after Charles beckwith did exchange program with the 22nd SAS and realized that the United States needed a unit with the same capability. JSOC wasn't informed until after operation eagle claw when they're wasn't a centralized command structure between the military branches. I'm basing my opinion off of what I've read and who I've listened to that the unit has the best shooters in the world and it isn't even close. The unit was the first counter terrorist unit to do multiple breach points when hitting a target. Now granted just say who's the best is really redundant being that Stanley McChrystal saw it fit to have all the tier 1 units cross train and augment each other on operations which really helped make JSOC what it is today. JSOC is unrivaled. No other country has anything as capable.
Most of the Unit Operators come from Ranger Regiment. It’s extremely rare that those guys discuss The Unit or their service. Most interviews and perspectives on The Unit come from a minority-namely former SF guys. Anywhere from 2/3 - 3/4 of The Unit come from Ranger Regiment. Ranger Regiment is already a very quiet, professional organization that does not discuss what they do.
Must’ve been a real special time in JSOC when SR really came online. Edit: I’ve wanted a Dyson vacuum since the day I saw it. Specifically, the stick model that mounts to the wall (V8,V10,etc). They were in my dreams lmao. Finally got one and I completely agree with Jennifer there is no other option for me now. The V10 looks like it’s from space haha.
Great couple of musicians in Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa. Derek, if you wanna hear some treat Texas rock listen to Storyville and Malford Milligan. Storyville has Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon from SRV's Double Trouble.
As a musician and someone who enjoys this kind of spec ops stuff, this one was gold. You're one of the best interviewers Ryan, and you keep getting better. There's always valuable lessons in these stories whether you're a veteran or not.
This is a tremendous podcast. I find that even though I haven't been in the military, due to my upbringing and demands placed upon me as a young man, I have acquired the same mindset as those who push themselves in special forces.

Love this interview! So glad you interview Delta operators instead of being like everyone else and interviewing Navy Seals. No disrespect to the Seals, my Grandfather was an original Frogman in WW2. Unit guys do not get enough credit for what they do. They are truly the best of the best. Every Unit guy is a tier 1 operator. Only Seal Team 6 (DevGru) is tier 1.
Tier 1 are not better. Different mission. Rangers and Green Berets are tier 2. You need them both in a war.

I am a retired TBI neurologist, having worked at Fort Benning, GA for 12 years. I have been a neurologist for 28 years. TBI is THE unseen, non discussed injury of the military. It is often indistinguishable from PTSD, symptoms overlap making each defineable and treatable. Unfortunately society is aware of PTSD but not TBI. Our sm's get TBI's in combat and in garrison, training accidents, combatives, explosives and all the civilian causes such as falls etc. The ethos in the military leads to many not seeking medical attention. I am glad to see this episode bringing this issue attention.

I love your channel Ryan! I have really enjoyed all your interviews. This one stands out though. He just has such a remarkably good perspective on so many things. For example, showing deference to the soldiers on the other side. I dont think I would have the ability to do the same.

I have tears and chills listening to his story. When he spoke of how detrimental it was to his mind as he forced himself to not think about his family when he was on missions is both heart wrenching and amazing at the same time. The mental aptness and the ability to have that much focus on his “job” is awe inspiring. As a civilian, it is truly fascinating and emotional to hear these stories of hero’s. For me, I can’t even imagine what you and the men and women you’ve had on your podcast have gone through mentally and physically. I feel we as regular, everyday people DO NOT give the true amount of respect and admiration that all of you deserve. Thank you for your podcast. I’m a die hard listener and forever thankful you bring these stories to life.
My parents were Everly brothers and everything after was noise. No Beatles or Stones. I love the stones but my first album was Van Halen. Now I listen to the stones more than anything but still like eagles, ac/dc, some Doors, a lot of Beatles. Occasionally 80’s metal like metalica, Iron Maiden,some of the glam bands Motley Crue, def leopard especially when he persisted as a one armed drummer. A lot of Zeppelin. Many more

Oh man. I had a "head injury" some years ago. I don't really remember the next couple weeks except for the fact that thinking gave me a headache and I think I'm having memory problems and some other mental problems, hard to explain.
I am fully aware that my behavior is a little off sometimes. My childhood is a blur, nothing is sequential, all scattered, and I've often wondered just how bad the injury was.
I also occasionally have random, weird, bizarre night sweats. I'll wake up almost frozen stiff, almost panicked in a puddle of my sweat. I've never known why, but it's interesting.

I know it's pretty redundant to make comparisons to other units but I feel like former CAG guys have a certain ora about them. I watch so many interviews with former special operations people and there's just something different with the unit guys. JSOC as a whole is head and shoulders above any other military organizations in the world. It's not even close.

Very good especially at JSOC WAS NEVER THERE AS A TROOP. Had the opportunity too as a CCT JTAC FOR CSAR FROM THNONE. in country but wanted to be on ground regardless SO, choose to work with a Marson team instead. I was across the street from + have many friends that went up the, Hill. + on the Farm with Cag + the security platoons and of couse the CCT GREEN TEAM. GUYS PLUS ALL THE RANGES AND STRESS COUSES/ SHOOT HOUSES ALONG WITH THE MASSIVELY AWESOME RESOURCES FOR THE GYMS/ POOL. So Forth is great. However in ISRAEL 🇮🇱 DEATH IS ALWAYS SOMETHING THAT IS KNOCKING AT DOOR FOR EVEN CIVILIANS SO MOST LOVE GOING TO DO THEUIR JOB. They are always everyday having combatant operations take place and they have quite a bit of funding as well: not only that their Special operations Forces are top notch. + truly dedicated ready for saving life or going on a suicide mission for their & many of us how wish through CHRIST. LORD God YHWH YAH-HE-WAH-HE JEHOVAH FATHER of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: + many are gaining the MESSIAH LORD ALMIGHTY AND SAVIOUR CHRIST JESUS OF NAZARETH IN THEIR LIFE.
SO I WOULD RANK THEM NO 1. OVERALL.
2. US EXCELLENT I cannot go against my brothers was in 1st Force Reconnaissance Co. 5 years Then: AFSOC as a CCT for 6 years.
3. South African Special Police Force 1 or 2 make it every single class. +++ . Even better: they read from the HOLY BIBLE EVERY MORNING.
@@aueyburroughs1143 you were a cct? i find that a little hard to believe. it's pretty much unanimous from many former special operations veterans that JSOC is head and shoulders better than any other organization on the planet. I agree israel is elite but they simply lack the budget and talent pool along with the gear. CAG is King and it isn't even close.
Wasn't JSOC created from advice from,22 SAS? It's a huge Squadron, right with all the bells and whistles ,but did you know that CAG don't need JSOC to deploy, they have there own support, CAG are a stand alone unit, that's why they were created, but yeah, for sure there some of the best
@@nickjohnson710 CAG was created after Charles beckwith did exchange program with the 22nd SAS and realized that the United States needed a unit with the same capability. JSOC wasn't informed until after operation eagle claw when they're wasn't a centralized command structure between the military branches. I'm basing my opinion off of what I've read and who I've listened to that the unit has the best shooters in the world and it isn't even close. The unit was the first counter terrorist unit to do multiple breach points when hitting a target. Now granted just say who's the best is really redundant being that Stanley McChrystal saw it fit to have all the tier 1 units cross train and augment each other on operations which really helped make JSOC what it is today. JSOC is unrivaled. No other country has anything as capable.

Most of the Unit Operators come from Ranger Regiment. It’s extremely rare that those guys discuss The Unit or their service. Most interviews and perspectives on The Unit come from a minority-namely former SF guys. Anywhere from 2/3 - 3/4 of The Unit come from Ranger Regiment. Ranger Regiment is already a very quiet, professional organization that does not discuss what they do.

As a musician and someone who enjoys this kind of spec ops stuff, this one was gold. You're one of the best interviewers Ryan, and you keep getting better. There's always valuable lessons in these stories whether you're a veteran or not.
This is a tremendous podcast. I find that even though I haven't been in the military, due to my upbringing and demands placed upon me as a young man, I have acquired the same mindset as those who push themselves in special forces.
