According to a crest we used to have, someone in the English side of my ancestry once saved a king's life in battle by hiding him in a tree!

Also, I feel that those of us who are queer can call on a unique bond to our queer elders/ancestors (not through blood)

Thank you for saying this I was literally thinking about the elders and people gone from our community without officially legal family bonds but who paved the way as ancestors should have

I got really exited when I saw you sharing parts of the journey connecting with your ancestors, over on your other socials! I just love seeing the many different experiences/perspectives people have on ancestor work
    Good luck with your research!

Ah man I could feel my eyes start twinkling when when you started talking about remediation. My mom's side of the family is basically half Anishinaabe. By contrast a lot of the folks on my dad's side of the family owned slaves and fought for the confederacy. My approach to ancestor veneration regarding those on my dad's side has for years been "I'm going to work to create the world that my indigenous ancestors deserved by undoing the life's work of a whole lot of you, so either get behind me or get the fuck outta my way."
To my surprise a lot of those ancestors have been...shockingly receptive. But that's a different story.

My cat is an affectionate shoulder scarf... this one also clearly wants to be but is too big. 😂 Very pretty though. Very cool that you're learning all this about your family! Also cat.🤣

My grandma did a DNA** test and found out too that she was English, Germna, French and things like that. It is always interesting to see where ancestry goes through history and even in families.
Happy to see you back Nike!! And Good luck with your ancestral workings/research ❤❤

For me, when the ancestors of blood are problematic, I look to ancestors of paths (careers, spiritual, shared struggles, etc.). One of my favorite sites is FindAGrave, so there there is more of a focus on named kinship rather than anything more rigid like blood. Two of the most prominent things about my family is that my maternal grandmother's line links to Clan Fraser of Lovat in Scotland, and my maternal grandfather has an oral tradition in which links to the folktale "Why the Sea is Salt", claiming that the person with the salt mill is my ancestor.
Unfortunately, now I struggle with what my paternal grandmother has claimed about her line, as she claims to be related to the Indigenous Sauk tribe (even Chief Black Hawk) and the Cherokee tribe, but at the same time, she has used a slur to describe her own grandmother.

Yes! I had meant to mention this in the video and completely forgot. 100%, look to ancestors of your paths. For me that’s artists, photographers, witches, astrologers, etc.

I have done this as well and am Italian, Greek and Egyptian but mainly Italian….thank you for saying if you have shitty ancestors it does not mean you have to venerate them because sometimes I think that guilt of not acknowledging them is there-(because they are after all your family) I REFUSE TO venerate the shitty ones….and I had an argument with someone saying regardless of them being shitty you have to acknowledge them! I disagree! So thank you for this! 💜🙏🏻

Your acknowledgement can be “you suck and I won’t venerate you” tada, I acknowledged that you sucked 😤

To add to this, American Requiem and Amen on the Cowboy Carter album encapsulate well the tone to go into ancestor work especially for Americans.

It's funny. I'm from Denmark, born and live here. My family (mostly on my fathers side) is huge! Like, i don't even know them all, even the ones who is still alive. And that too can be a problem, because there is so much information, and different traditions to look into. So I really have to filter it all.
The Royal Copenhagen porcelain, is still in the making, and is still painted by hand. In Denmark a lot of people collect it. And if it's old, it could be worth a lot of money. :)
So exciting to find out more about your family tree!

Remember when we are thinking of our ancestors generally we only know or know of a few generations so if who we were are miserably broken people doesnt mean that there were not wise and wonderful people we dont know of..for that reason i think we can venerate our ancestors as a group and ask the wise ones to step forward as we need them.

I've been meaning to work out my family tree, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. It's quite daunting! And I know that 99% is gonna be Dutch, so 🤷? I'm sure it's still worth the effort, my ancestors are worth knowing. Still, I guess it's less exciting when you're quite sure there aren't any adventurous tales to be found... But who knows, perhaps I will be surprised in the end 😄

This was very inspirational actually. Love the video, great to see you back.
Actually same with the family situation so Ive been discouraged with getting into ancestral working. At least outside of adopting small bits of practice and traditions from the cultures I am familiar with... Irish, German, French, and Italian predominantly with bits of other things (including Danish: somehow related to the Danish royal family from my grandparents but idk... My grandfather's sister did an Ancestry DNA thing after she retired... Idk her so idk how that went lol) Also a little Native American, but not like it's enough to matter legally or anything, I don't think
And also, Love the cats 😍. Gannon (Love the name btw✨) is a beefy boi and Sebastian is a spaz. They're great 🔥🤌 I can feel the neediness 😂

I have a few ancestors who were on the Mayflower, maybe we are also related. I also am related to 12 U.S. President's so there is that toxic history.

  • @rachelrose221

Hello again! (been getting around to watching your stuff now that executive function is back)
If you don't mind sharing, who is your Mayflower ancestor? Because I am descended from someone there (Alden), as is my wife (dude who fell off the boat and survived, don't remember his name). Descended from different people, and so far different family lines from what we can tell lol.
Your video has also prompted me to reopen up my ancestry tree and start tracking that again, so thank you! I also do ancestor veneration and work (I think it kinda goes in hand with working Hekate huh), but so far it's been the recent ancestors for me, like grandparent and great-grandparents.
Glad you have you back btw ^_^
