best realistic way, if you and your friends are in the ocean and a shark appears and it bites onto your leg and drags you instead of your friends, cause if ya have an object in your hand or just your fist, ya can drive your fist through it's eye multiple times quoting Gray Fox
It's one of the major things I don't like about Twin Snakes. He doesn't just sound tormented, he sounds almost inhuman... which he kind of isn't. Stranger yet, the original voice actor returned to voice Vulcan Raven so they had him on hand. Someone at Twin Snakes just didn't like the voice apparently.
Grey Fox's speech about having killed Naomi's parents and then not having the heart to kill her makes me wanna cry. You can almost visualize every detail of him raising her and feel every emotion that goes along with it. Great story telling.
And keep in the fact of how much Naomi LOVED Frank/Fox. If the Codec call and ALL of the conversation with her didn't happen, this scene wouldn't have as much of an impact. When Naomi describes ger brother and how "you left him a cripple" it digs in how much she loved Frankie and the means she was willing to go for him. And in the end, Snake never told Naomi he did. But that he loved her.
Yesterday I've reached this part of the game, and whole shit, this scene caught me off guard, MGS always had great story, moments, and voice acting, but even so, I never expected that the very first game, on a PS1 would have such a great voice acting, this scene has so many emotions that it sent shivers down my spine every single time that I had to watch it again because I died, it feels like they actually killed a close friend of David hayter right in front of his eyes while recording
"Snake, we're not tools of the government or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing, the only thing I was good at, but at least I always fought for what I believed in"
"Now, in front of you, I can finally die. After Zanzibar, I was taken from the battle, neither truly alive nor truly dead, an undying shadow in the world of lights. But soon... soon... it will finally... end."
What tugs my heart the most is Snake says "I can't do it". He literally will not kill his old friend, even if it means killing liquid too. That cuts deep.
Which destroys the notion made by Liquid that Solid was a killer. If that were true, he would have shot the stinger. But it goes to show how much of a hero good guy Fox was. He was willing to die to protect the world. He wanted to die by Snakes hand, in a more honorable warrior way. But when it came down to it, he died saving the world. An actual hero.
The first time I played this, I didn't hear Snake say it - because I myself couldn't do it, it only plays Snakes line if you press ⬛ . Re-loaded my save right after thinking I could actually shoot and have something else happen... Hearing "No! I can't do it!" all I could think was "Me neither 😢"
Its an interesting part of the game. Snake is a very deep and complicated character in MGS1 and the silent but complicated protagonist is a motif that has been continued ever since MGS1, and imo is what sets MGS apart from generic action games such as Just Cause. Yes, the hero is that generic action protagonist, but he is secretly a dynamic, rather than a static, character. At the start of MGS1, Snake is a cold killer. He expresses no remorse or convictions to any particular set of beliefs, and his reasons for fighting that he gives are money and the feeling of being alive. He finds it normal how he killed both Big Boss and Grey Fox, and until a certain part in the story, would do it again if they found themselves on opposite sides. But this changes throughout the game. Snake's encounters with the members of Foxhound, their motivations, their goals, and their demise, influence Snake to make something more out of his abilities, and at times even shame him. Another major part of it is Meryl and Otacon. Snake clearly cares for Meryl to the point he puts himself through arduous amounts of torture to save her life, as well as saving her from Psycho Mantis. But by far the biggest cause for the change in Snake is Grey Fox. Grey Fox is not like Snake. While they are friends, Grey Fox fights for something he believes in(he died in Zanzibar supporting Big Boss because he believed the only purpose he would find was in battle), while Snake fights for himself(both in the idea of fighting for money as well as fighting for the thrill of "being alive). Grey Fox's revival itself is not enough to stir Snake over the edge, but Snake's reflection on the events of Zanzibar Land, spurred by his new emotional connections to people like Hal and Meryl, lead to him developing feelings of regret. This is further compounded by how the members of FOXHOUND greet him with varrying levels of respect or condemnation, but always serving as an idea of what Snake could be; Raven fights for religious reasons, he finds combat is a true expression of humanity, Psycho Mantis fights for mass murder, only caring to eliminate as many people as he can, but compares himself to Snake multiple times and even describes him as worse. Sniper Wolf is the final one, who fights out of revenge against a world that left her to die. Sniper Wolf's death is perhaps the most impactful on Snake, as it comes during a turning point when he is now developing regret over his actions and relationships, and finally meets someone who died fighting for something they believed in. By the time Grey Fox comes in during the Metal Gear fight, Snake is deeply in doubt and confused about himself. However, seeing Grey Fox, someone who was once his close friend, sacrifice himself for something he believed in (saving the world from the plans of Liquid Snake), showed Snake that he doesnt have to just fight for himself, but that he can apply his skill and ability for a purpose other than self-serving. Imo, its why snake is a dramatically better and more likeable character by MGS2. He is far more social, motivated, and noble than the gun-for-hire in MGS1. TLDR: Snake in MGS1 is a very interesting and deep character, and the Stinger/Gray Fox sequence reflects on how Snake has changed since the events of Metal Gear 2 in his motivations and morals. Snake no longer can kill his friend as he now understands the concept of fighting for something he believes in, and the appreciation for others and regret of his past that he develops in MGS1 stops him from being able to destroy Gray Fox, even if it means completing the mission (even though in MG2 he had no qualms about the same thing).
The characters, the line delivery, the voice acting, the music. Honestly this is the movie I’ve been waiting for, it would be hard to live up to this, nothing surpasses the original.
I believe Liam Neeson could have played solid snake in a movie if it was made as his voice build and solitary soldier like acting is so similar to snakes

I remember my brother preordered this game and they gave us a cd with the soundtrack. It was so epic. The tracks “escape” and “the best is yet to come” as they did the first time I heard them; still, still they just pull something out of me. RIP J-Bone. RIP Gray Fox.
5 year old me grew up knowing that I had to be my own man and fight for the things I truly wanted/believed in. I turn 30 this year and I still love and idolize Gray Fox. Imagine my surprise in finding out his VA shares a birthday with me…
Best video game of all time. I still have my copy from September 3, 1998, same original copy, non players choice, still works and in good condition. My favorite game series of all time, helped me through a lot of hard times.
To me, this is still the greatest game ever made and this is the saddest scene in video game history. Grey Fox was such a fantastic character, so broken yet perfect.
So epic. For a video game, this was way ahead of its time back in FREAKING 1998 when it first released. We were playing crash bandacoot along with this...
"At least i always fought for what i believed in" he and naomi were working to get big boss back. All the way since back then. He believed in big boss.. what a soldier and storytelling
+Scrublord the Abysswalker There's no differences. In MGS1, David Hayter himself purposely gave Solid SNake a rasp and gravelly dragout according to various interviews. I checked the interview you said. He sounds precisely the same as he did in MGS1. I completely disagree with you in virtually everything you said, same as the other three.
Liquid: see, snake? You cannot protect any one. Not even your self Vergil: might controls everything. And without strength, you cannot protect anything, let alone yourself.
This is such an epic piece of miracle even Kojima himself could never replicate later on. The soundtrack, lines and dialog, voice acting, camera angles, animations all are filled with meaningfulness and originality! I grew up with Grey-Fox and this version of Solid-Snake as my heroes, and the complexity of their friendship has always bugled my mind.
This moment changed my life! My Jaw was literally on the floor as i looked on welling up with emotion! i knew then video games had crossed over into something much more
In my opinion, this is the BEST scene in Metal Gear Solid series. The emotion is this scene is incomparable. Only Wolf's death and the last scene on MGS3 and 4 have such an emotion. David Hayter INCREDIBLE voice acting, the moment, the soundtrack. EVERYTHING in this scene is perfect. 11/10 for Kojima, this guy is the best game producer EVER.
I wouldn't know since I haven't played it, but watching that scene really didn't set a good tone for the rest of the game, especially since Fox didn't even sound like he was in pain, he just kinda talked normally rather than the dire and dramatic voice of the original.
I find it stupid that the orginal voice actor for Gray Fox was in twin snakes except instead of reprising his role he only voiced the DARPA chief, this voice actor was able to send a more, i don't know the right word.........maybe tortured soul type vibe when he spoke
***** its so true about twin snakes sucking shit, on top of the rerecorded dialogue they also altered the cut scenes with all this over the top theatrical bullshit. like when snake first encounters meryle and they engage in this choreographed gun juggling scene that was so stupid. ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS REMAKE THE ORIGINAL GAME!!!! SUCH a disappointment
I love this scene. It ties together their past,Naomi, and his own mortality. The Stinger scene hurt. Snake knew that if he fired,he could destroy Liquid, but he'd also kill Fox. Fox was his mentor and the man he was forced to fight in Zanzibar.
i always cry at the end "snake.. we're not tools of the government.. or anyone else.. fighting was the only thing i was good at.. the ONLY thing.. but at least i fought for what i believed in.." something inside me just makes me cry on demand every time..
i want to see this animated in full CG glory before I die, this scene still tears me up everytime I remember it...so fckn amazing voice acting by everyone
Liquid's voice actor was unparalleled in his delivery of both seething and, at other times, explosive hatred. His voice acting alone makes the last part of the game the absolute pinnacle for me.
Only as I am olde enough now do I understand what it is to be haunted by the past, and the worst hell is being reminded of the good things you let go and even destroyed, then facing a reality that is emptier every day. Mgs understands broken people who are just going because it hasn't ended yet.

OMGpandemic A undying shadow in a world of light
Liquid was sent to Britain and served in the SAS during the first gulf war that's why his hair is blonde it was bleached by the sun
Bri ish?!

"Fighting was the only thing i was good at, but at least I always fought for what i believed in."
such an incredible fucking line.
5 year old me grew up knowing that I had to be my own man and fight for the things I truly wanted/believed in. I turn 30 this year and I still love and idolize Gray Fox. Imagine my surprise in finding out his VA shares a birthday with me…
my spine shivered many times while listening to each sentience there is nothing like MGS 1
" a cornored fox is more dangerous than a jackal " :'(
Nothing can describe the amount of pain and fury that i just feel in the moment that i saw fox been killed by liquid
We were playing crash bandacoot along with this...
... an undying shadow in the world of lights
Listen to that line many times.. you can FEEL the sorrow
To be a ghost in this world and nothing more with no end... death was a relief from the depths of pain and sorrow.
when I saw this scene when playing mgs on the ps1 I think I had something in my eye.
Tears are streaming down my face.. FOX!!!
Saddest moment in video game history :'(
Saddest death in gaming history, R.I.P. Grey Fox

Here we are once again, old friend.
Same friend....same
Twin Snakes cant beat the voice of grey fox on this plus the background tune. This always makes my hair stand up.
"At least i always fought for what i believed in" he and naomi were working to get big boss back. All the way since back then. He believed in big boss.. what a soldier and storytelling
Remember when David Hayters voice acting was top notch?
***** actually he was asked iff he could still do Young snake and he pulled it off perfectly.
+Scrublord the Abysswalker I watched that and he sounded just like his yound snake voice so i disagree
+Scrublord the Abysswalker Actually, it;s said that David had a cold during the original recording of MGS1.
Was? It still is.
why does this still make me feel so much
Liquid: see, snake? You cannot protect any one. Not even your self
Vergil: might controls everything.
Fuckin oath!
The twin snakes version of this scene is abysmal.
I wouldn't know since I haven't played it, but watching that scene really didn't set a good tone for the rest of the game, especially since Fox didn't even sound like he was in pain, he just kinda talked normally rather than the dire and dramatic voice of the original.
yeee, dude reading the lines like placing his order at a fast food restaurant
Twin Sankes version is abysmal... not only this scene..
@@CarloTheImmortal This!
@@afterzanzibar You guys are extremely biased. Seriously.
One of the sadiest moments in video games, The death of gray fox.
a cornered fox is more dangerous than a jacked!
I remember when I was trying to shoot MG Rex, I thought my controller was broken until I heard Snake saying he couldn't do it.
The feels, man.
Gray Fox: Now in front of you...
Snake: No, I can't do it!!!!
I find it stupid that the orginal voice actor for Gray Fox was in twin snakes except instead of reprising his role he only voiced the DARPA chief, this voice actor was able to send a more, i don't know the right word.........maybe tortured soul type vibe when he spoke
Because the original actor died before the Twin Snakes was planned :(
Arrowfaster Erm, no he didn't. Greg Eagles is alive and well, and voiced the DARPA Chief in Twin Snakes.
Arrowfaster It was the Japanese voice actor for Grey Fox that died.
It was better without the matrix slow mo cliches
What really gets me is the break in Snake's voice at 3:30.
Gray fox's voice acting in that game was phenomenal.
I love this scene. It ties together their past,Naomi, and his own mortality.
The Stinger scene hurt. Snake knew that if he fired,he could destroy Liquid, but he'd also kill Fox. Fox was his mentor and the man he was forced to fight in Zanzibar.
i always cry at the end
"snake.. we're not tools of the government.. or anyone else..
fighting was the only thing i was good at.. the ONLY thing.. but at least i fought for what i believed in.."
something inside me just makes me cry on demand every time..
What a emotional scene, goosebumps...Perfect music, voices ...
It's insane how clean these animations are.
Right in the fuckin' feels every time!
This is the best Metal Gear game I have ever experienced... The feelings, and the memories... Such a pristine work of art
одна из лучших сцен в истории видеоигр. пробивает на слезу и не раз
"fooooooooooox!"
You know your childhood was good when you can still memorize that whole cut scene
i want to see this animated in full CG glory before I die, this scene still tears me up everytime I remember it...so fckn amazing voice acting by everyone
Liquid's voice actor was unparalleled in his delivery of both seething and, at other times, explosive hatred. His voice acting alone makes the last part of the game the absolute pinnacle for me.
After years I still comeback to this scene, the voice acting is some of the best I’ve ever heard in my life
This was plastation 1, guys.
Holy crap.
Best voice acting, best character feeling, best soundtrack, best MGS ever!
High salute 💪🏻✋🏻
Really liked the original voice on Gray Fox, his new one isn't bad but shame they changed it.
+fenix0seraph I feel that the original one was a little cheesy for me. I like the new one.
Hideo Kojima understood Veterans even before the fall of the towers we owe him a lot for such a relatable remarkable game.
Only as I am olde enough now do I understand what it is to be haunted by the past, and the worst hell is being reminded of the good things you let go and even destroyed, then facing a reality that is emptier every day.
Mgs understands broken people who are just going because it hasn't ended yet.
This resonates with my equally broken self, friend
Your comment is the only one that brought me to tears
now... in front of you... i can finally die... After Zanzibar... I was taken from the battle... neither truly alive not truly dead... an undying shadow in the world of lights... But soon... ...soon... It will...finally... end...
One of my favorite MGS scenes
“An Undying Shadow in a world of lights” is my favorite Frank line in the franchise. And every single year it hits harder.
He spent his last moment alive to help and save Solid Snake of defeating Metal Gear REX's Radome and now Snake gotta finish it
Same voice actor as the Grim Reaper from Billy & Mandy
That’s Phil La Marr you’re talking about
@@liquidaeronraines5367 _no_ I'm pretty sure it's Greg Eagles
Oh shit you are right, jeez I had the Mandela effect, I’m pretty sure Phil voiced Grim but damn you are right.
I still say, “a cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal!” to this day, and it’s sad when nobody ever acknowledges MGS
When he said “I can’t do it” he was talking about using the gun. But with the music it sounds like he’s hesitating for his friend
RIP Gray Fox
I remember this scene really revved up my emotions for the next fight. Made me wanted to fight and defeat Liquid even more.
