I was taught that yabbies and eels move when the water starts running. We got a professional eel catcher in to clean out our dam before we stocked with red claw and last year we had a blue craw yabbie that was about 3 times bigger than than that blue with eggs all over her. Another thing I learnt is that if you see a turtle laying eggs high above the water line or climbing areas that you would not ordinarily think you'd find a turtle, the wet season will be strong as they're looking for higher ground to lay eggs. Last year I nearly ran over a turtle about 300m from the river up a steep incline and knew this year was going to be WET. IT'S AMAZING WHAT AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE CAN TELL US ABOUT OUR WEATHER AND ENVIROMENT. Us silly white fellas still have a lot to learn and it's very disappointing that you can't see platypus like we used to when we were kids. Isn't it great to see our country with some running water again!? BEAUTIFUL!!!
Robbie , I swear to gawd you are my brother from another mother. I do exactly what you do , just on the west coast of the states. I love your channel mate , and if I ever get the chance to catch yabbies ( or crawfish in my land ) , we're gonna do it! I know this is an older video , but I've fallen behind. Love what you do my man!
@@robbiefishing Heck yeah Robbie!! I have a few ways of catching them. If I'm in the big creeks , i'll swim / snorkel bank to bank for a good 3 miles and fill up two 5 gallon buckets.........OR go out with a buddy and drop traps in the Columbia river. I have pulled up traps that had around 200+ yabbies in there , and some are monsters. Different breed than what you have there , but I have caught some with claws up to 4". I'm also only 1 hour from the coast , where I dive of set traps for crabbing , but also spearfish as well. Honestly though.......some of the best crawdad fishing days I have ever had , were in the smaller creeks , just walking up current and checking every square inch. Even in little creeks.......you would be amazed at how big some of those suckers get! Close to the river size!! I promise you , when the season comes in a few months , I will at least try to get you some pictures!!
I usually find that the smaller yabbies start moving out first and then the big ones start becoming more active so should be plenty of big yabbies in that dam that will soon rise from the mud mate, hopefully the same size and as that big one aswell.
That's good stuff there. I'm a gazillion miles away in the Florida Keys and still anxious to see you pull in that net....Love all your vids, real deal guy is fun to watch.
WOW that was a lot bigger than what I normal see! I would suggest trying to suspend the bait in the middle of net especially if the body of water is rocky or curved as then they can just crawl up and around the net and still get the bait.
A little piece of advice from a Cajun here in Louisiana! If you want to catch many more and load your nets fast get you some really bloody meat and put that in your traps! Crawfish love bloody meat and just like a shark they can smell the blood in the water! Over here we use meat called Melt and usually when we pick up our nets after a hour or two the crawfish are falling out of the net there are so many! Anyway the meat we call melt looks a lot like liver like calf liver or even hog liver and the crawfish love it! If you try my suggestion let me know how it works out for you?
5 days 5 days. The local farmers frezzer is proberly full of yabbies. For the last 5 days hes been emptying them each day buckets full of yabbies and it didn't even cost him a dog biscute. He's proberly watching you right now hoping you put in more fresh bait and return in another 5 days. 😀😁😃😄😆😉
They would be in the swamp for sure Robbie feeding on fresh stuff. They will climb back overland at night to the dam or a new one once the water starts to drop in the swamp
Thanks Ben, I reckon you might be right mate. I have actually seen them crossing land at night at Lake Urana years ago. As teenagers my cousin and I were walking around with torches (Probably dolphin torches back then) picking them up. LOL
I don't think Satan would be able to handle 'Big Blue' there! Wow! How is Satan? He out of Brumation yet? The wild one in my yard has been out and about a little over a month already, but then again, I'm in the Bendigo area, not the north-east...
Little yabbies are goodo (r.r.r)! They grow bigger! Black/blue. Not marrons?? Never seen em that color down south. Except one dam i know that did have marrons released in it. Thanks for the great vids!!

Hey Robbie been subscribed to ya for a while now, I saw you using a raider rod for a spinning rod to catch murray cod, was wondering what exact raider spinning rod would you use for murray cod? Cheers in advance if you can get back to me, love ya work
G'day mate, I can not remember the exact model sorry. It's out in the shed and I haven't used it for 6 months. From memory its about 6 foot long and probably around the 6kg - 8kg size i think.
I’m not sure about the net style you’re using, Robbie, but I know they can walk in and out of the opera house style with steel rings on the entries. I’ve had about 25 in one, which was wired shut. I didn’t have a bucket with me, so I threw it back in, and pulled it out an hour later and there was only half the original count.
Hey Jarrad.. haha I have had that happen and it sux balls. LOL The open top loft nets are even worse. NEVER throw them back in with yabbies still in them.
@@robbiefishing haha, it does some funny stuff. When I read Ryan Willis' comment I couldn't help myself, but I knew what he meant as I'm sure anyone else that watches your channel. hahaha I would be lying if I said that I didn't check them after half an hour. LOL
robbiefishing don’t blame you, it looked almost golden for yabbies. Imagine that same place in the summer catching huge big yabbies there!
One day I went yabbying the yabbies were the size of a beer bottle 🍾
I loved the colours on that big blue one, what a stunning creature! Great sign seeing little ones in there, wherever they came from
Thanks mate, I do too, absolutely beautiful when they get that blue colour.
Great video Robbie! That yabbie was massive. Todays been a good day 👍
Vincent Chircop yeah mate this is my channel. Feel free to check it out
