Seeing Matt Dodge screw up all those punts simply reminds me of how he messed up kicking to DeSean Jackson to lose that game later in the season. Cost the Giants a playoff spot
What also cost them was their turnover problems and bad losses to the Vikings, Eagles twice, Titans, and Packers which the Giants were def better than that year.
IDK, I think Dodge was just fine, the problem was in these two games, where the coaching staff was all chicken-little about the possibility of Devin Hester or DeSean Jackson running one back, and their demands he kick to avoid the return messed with his head and his mechanics. Just let the rookie kick like normal. Hester might have been a great punt returner, but he ran back less than 5% of the punts he touched for TDs. The coaching staff was hysterical about something that less than 1 in 20 chances of happening. How many snaps did Dodge drop when his head was not full of frantic strategies to avoid Hester? Notice that even with the drop, he kept his head, moved out of danger and got the kick off anyway, where most punters would have tried to make something happen and ended up turning the ball over on downs. Dodge's kick to Jackson, against Philadelphia, was just fine, and the return was not his fault. Jackson actually bobbled the punt, and lost the ball. If the coverage team had been alert and on the job, that was a golden opportunity for a turnover in field goal range, or to at least pin the Eagles so far back they could not have scored in regulation. Instead they just let him run around the whole team to reach the end zone, on what should have been a disaster on Jackson's extensive career blooper reel. I was never more disappointed in Tom Coughlin as a coach that seeing him run out onto the field to publicly confront a rookie punter, on live TV, in front of a stadium full of fans, for a situation to which Dodge contributed the least of anyone on that defense. Dodge only played in the 2010 season, the Giants cut him and no one else gave him a chance, because he made DeSean Jackson fumble a punt and his teammates let him down. He took over for Jeff Feagles, a Pro Bowl punter, and was replaced by Steve Weatherford, two guys I have nothing but high regards for. Dodge averaged 44.7 yards per punt. You know how many times Feagles or Weatherford did that? Zero. Feagles managed to surpass 44 yds/punt once, with 43.8 and Weatherford's career best average was 39.4. Yards per punt is just about the only major stat kept on punters that does not rely on the field position of the punt or whether or not his blockers or the coverage team do their job. Dodge's single season might have been an outlier, but it was the best season by a punter for the Giants between Brad Maynard in 1998 (who was kicking for the Bears in this game) and Brad Wing in 2016. It was better than Sean Landeta, Mike Horan, or Jamie Gillan ever did in my lifetime.
That’s true but honestly I understand why he didn’t run for it. It’s not natural instinct for a punter to run in any situation. Any punter in the league there would’ve done the same thing.
Terrell Thomas is one of those cases where he had a ton of talent and just got bit by a nasty injury that he couldn’t come back from. I thought he could’ve had great seasons, maybe Pro Bowls, ahead of him if it weren’t for that knee injury. Had 5 INTs in the two seasons before he got hurt.
