"the Lord" doesn't really speak to anyone so trusting the Lord and leaning not on your own understanding is really "trust the church" and lean not on your own understanding. Cuz in most churches if you question them because your reading of the bible doesn't lead you to the same conclusions you could fairly claim that your doubts and rethinking of the narrow dogmatic way of your church based on your own reading of the bible could be the Lord leading you to something else. But your church will claim that that is you leaning on your own understanding. I've seen it a million times. One thing that really bugs me when Christians say that "all you have to do is just believe." Is that it's not true. There's a lot of hard things that come with being a Christian, a lot of things that God expects his followers to do. So why wouldn't people want to be absolutely sure they believe and understand, or even believe the right way? How can you be sure that you believe if you don't analyze and question things?

God always answers prayer and always works for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose. But also gods ways are not our ways. Therefore when you pray for healing and instead someone dies. That person was reunited with Christ which is the ultimate healing. So not getting what you prayed for God still wins. And as for smaller things like relationships or job promotions etc. when your prayer is not answered the way you want you can be assured that God's plan is still working and he has something better for you. Nevermind that through out history gods plan seemed to include a lot of hardship and suffering for millions of seemingly innocent people. @@YourAlexanderso true except you're leaving out the most important. It's not just believe in Jesus and you'll be with him don't believe and you won't be with him. In order to accept the good news of the Gospel you must first except the bad news that God created hell and created you for hell if you don't believe. Who created humanity knowing who would choose which path. He created a system in which if you don't make the right choice you will be punished forever. He specifically designed the torments of that forever punishment. And then allows a world to go on in which not every single member of humanity even has the chance to accept Jesus. In the vast majority who do are people who were just born into it and never really have a chance to reject it. Oh so yeah it's wonderful to believe that Christ died for our sins because he loved us so much. But in order to believe that you also wholeheartedly have to believe that you are worthy of hell without that sacrifice I also understanding that God created a system in which sacrifice was necessary to atone. I'm glad that you believe in the love and mercy of God but in order for that system to work you also have to believe in a lot of cruelty wrath and sadism that creates the system that makes it all possible. Doubting Thomas is a fable where Thomas is a narrative tool called a plot device character used to introduce a small conflict and illustrate a moral lesson that the protagonist may then resolve. The lesson is threefold: 1. It is better not to question, or to reason, or to think, but rather to blindly accept for no good reason and against all reason. 2, to which your response convicts you of having fallen victim; Doubting Thomas had already followed lesson 1 and did the doubting for you, so there is absolutely no need for you to consider it yourself. And 3. if you did either 1 or 2, you would be diminished in the eyes of the very character the reader is supposed to be trying to suck up to. Thanks 😇

I agree! What Kristi said at about 28:56 in the video really made sense. My takeaway/personal spin on what she said is thus: if followers of other religions with other gods are taught to "trust and obey" their gods & clergy representing their gods - thus rejecting or disputing any "outside the faith" ideas, then NOBODY would convert from other religions to Christianity! Only the "doubting Thomases"/skeptical minds of other religions would ever be convinced to accept ideas from a different religion.
Pablo's Wager: If God exists and created me, then he created me as a rational thinking being. However, he does not provide evidence for his existence, and therefore believing in him means that I would have to abandon my gift of rational thought and resort to faith. Not utilizing my God-given gifts to their fullest extent is affront to my creator, and consequently would be a sin. Therefore, I am left with one immutable conclusion: If God exists, it would be a sin for me to believe in him.
Thinking is not a sin, but God encourages thinking, in my opinion, it is very understandable why Jesus said what he said to Thomas. Let's imagine that Jesus is really what he say he is and that he really did all the miracles that the bible says, and let's imagine that all the disciples have been together and they trust each other, if Thomas saw Jesus doing all those miracles and he knows that the disciples wouldn't like about something like that, why he had to doubt after every prove he already saw when being with Jesus?
Eve was, in my humble opinion, the OG in the Bible. 💪 She seeked wisdom instead of just listening to God. And I am forever thankful that it is documented.
Best explanation I can come up with for the supposed appearances of resurrected Jesus, especially the account of him showing himself to Thomas is that later scribes added that part later to attempt to dissuade people from following Thomas’s demand for proof.
I just cannot understand why according to John, Jesus had to retain and display his wounds to his close disciples. Physically resurrected and yet carrying wounds? And Thomas, he doesn't just mistrust his fellow disciples but wants to see the wounds rather than merely the person of the Guru?

THEN, I take it for a test drive, with the radio off and no one else riding with me; that way, I can hear any noises that will alert me to a problem. If I do all that for a vehicle I might only keep for 5 of 6 years, why wouldn't I thoroughly examine a belief system that will supposedly be for eternity? Thank you Kristi!
Yeah, even before my deconstruction of faith I always found it to be weird. Why WOULDN'T Thomas be skeptical? The rest of the New Testament is full of warning about false prophets and imposters.
I feel like this doubting Thomas story is probably one of the later additions to the gospel, added specifically to crush questions of the early church. Probably has been explored. Not sure it's worth the time to look up right now.
It's important to note that "Believe and don't doubt" is EXACTLY the command that a false religion would have to make. A true belief doesn't need such an absurd command. But Christianity is false so it asks us to do what every other false religion also is required to ask of us.
Excellent analysis. I've asked many Christian parents what punishment they inflicted on their children when they learned right from wrong / good from evil. No-one will answer, or they just say that there was no punishment for the greatest of all sins.
The greatest of all sins wasn't eating an apple, or obtaining the knowledge of evil. It was humanity believing its own whims are superior to God's boundaries. This is like thinking that your mad science experiment doesn't need to be constrained by ethics because the knowledge you need to have is superior to the harm it may cause others.
@@theboombody YHWH said they would die the same day they "ate of the fruit of knowledge." YHWH lied. The serpent told the truth. Since they didn't know right from wrong: Eve was framed. @@bobcrump6688 There are some things it is better NOT to know. When my mom died my dad got a companion gravestone. Right now it has three dates on it. When I DO find out when that day will be, it will be a sad day indeed. So I think it's best that I don't know it for a good long while. Really the only harm that comes from knowing good and evil is it gives you the responsibility to be good. Which is harder than it looks. If it wasn't harder than it looks we'd have zero drug addicts, or some number very close to zero. God knew we were not ready for such a responsibility. You know how many drug addicts I've cured? Zero. Why is that? Because I have a hard time just taking care of myself and my immediate family and none of us are even on drugs.

In 1984 Orwell laid out the way The Party prevented doubt and promoted orthodoxy. “Crimestop means the faculty of stopping short, as though by instinct, at the threshold of any dangerous thought. It includes the power of not grasping analogies, of failing to perceive logical errors, of misunderstanding the simplest arguments if they are inimical to Ingsoc, and of being bored or repelled by any train of thought which is capable of leading in a heretical direction. Crimestop, in short, means protective stupidity.” It's more dangerous than simply asking for ignorance. It's asking followers to accept things without evidence, in fact accepting things DESPITE evidence. And when the leaders get control of their followers' actual interpretation of reality, they are able to control literally everything. They are able to get them to believe absurdities, in order to have them commit atrocities.

Good call! Yahweh was originally just a storm god in a pantheon of Canaanite gods. The tribes who would become Jews realized that they needed to consolidate all the gods (with different attributes & powers) under one umbrella to help provide group cohesion because they were becoming fragmented after being oppressed by the Babylonians & Assyrians. Judaism is based on a fictional "origin story" of a great & glorious society that could be theirs once again, if they just obey only Yahweh as his "Chosen People". Think about the Ten Commandments! "Though shall have no other gods before me" does not mean "I am the only true god" it means "stop following the other gods - I am the highest-ranking god." Polytheism was still being practiced when the Ten Commandments story was written, and it was a big problem.

In this way you can justify ANY reality and outcome to be part of God's plan. Nevermind that through out history gods plan seemed to include a lot of hardship and suffering for millions of seemingly innocent people. @YourAlexander I stopped having a lot of interest in the faith after a few of the things I saw happen, glad he got there, interesting country, I'd like to maybe visit one day.
Ideas that are true don’t need to be shielded from too many questions, or doubts or criticisms. Only false ideas need that kind of protection.
@@YourAlexander Oh? Why did the pastor of a church I went to say that “asking ‘why’ is a many-horned, many-tailed devil”? Why are Christians taught to tell me “do not test the lord your god,” “blessed are those who believe without seeing,” “have faith like a child,” and “you should be very careful asking that, because he’ll make you suffer if you keep doubting”? “You can’t actually disagree with me. You secretly know there’s a god but you suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”
I don’t need to be careful asking if my car works, or have faith like a child that Australia exists, or never test whether I got paid for doing my job, or worry that someone will hit me if I question the claims in a chemistry class.
Why does Christianity need so much coddling and thought-stopping techniques to keep it safe from too much scrutiny? Again, only false ideas need that sort of treatment to keep believing.
All well knowing that a majority of humanity will be the recipients of the torment and not the grace.

Exactly 💯 Thomas story once stole our minds. Never again

What really matters though? Don't nihilists have a point?
Pablo's Wager:
If God exists and created me, then he created me as a rational thinking being. However, he does not provide evidence for his existence, and therefore believing in him means that I would have to abandon my gift of rational thought and resort to faith. Not utilizing my God-given gifts to their fullest extent is affront to my creator, and consequently would be a sin. Therefore, I am left with one immutable conclusion:
If God exists, it would be a sin for me to believe in him.
Men are more than just brains. Brains are a subset of the man, not the entire man.

Or do you mean that I'm defining faith wrong, because the definitions that atheists foist onto Christianity are *really* the correct ones, and not the ones Christians themselves have held to for thousands of years?
@@aerialpunk , Christians are pagans that serve the Wicked One.
So many great points here. The number of times Christians apply critical thinking to other religions, but fail to do so to their own. I just. 🤷🏽♀️
They also love to accuse other of being "politically correct".
I've been following you for a while now. I want you to know that you are a brave and powerful woman. Never let anyone convince you otherwise. Thank you for being you. The world needs more people like you.
thank you for sharing your perspective - presented in a most articulate & thoughtful way.
When it comes to religion or any life matters, always be a Thomas...never a Jesus.
Be a Thales, Cleanthes, Socrates, Aristotle, Pyrrho, Diogenes, Zeno, Cicero, Seneca, Aurelius . . .
Kristi I appreciate your content. It’s okay to doubt things and be skeptical about stuff. I just deconverted about a year ago.
To quote a scene from The Simpsons Movie that I think fits very well with this:
Russ Cargill: Don't worry, I have a solution for you, sir. In fact, I have five solutions. You don't have to read them. You'll have deniability. I'll take care of it. You know nothing.
Arnold Schwarzenegger: No. I need to know what I’m approving.
Russ Cargill: Absolutely. But on the other hand, knowing things is overrated. Anyone can pick something when they know what it is. It takes real leadership to pick something you're clueless about.
Great episode! Thanks for championing intellectual humility, which is essential to making good decisions and living a reasonable, happy life.
Kristi, that is a strong testimony to reality.
I never thought of this story in the depth that you have presented. I have enjoyed you work for quite some time. Your logic and thoughtfulness is refreshing. I remember as a teenager asking my pastor about doubting, and he said that doubting is OK as long as I came up with the right answer. That struck me as a non-answer to my question.
Whenever you get challenged on social media the comment sections of those crazy whacky Christians Trying to dis you are filled with your supporters⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️you are awesome, that's why.
The "Do no doubt us!" idea has been the best insurance policy for religions. The threat of impending residence in "Hell" scare enough people that they wouldn't dare question anything.
Absolutely! 'Heaven' and 'Hell' are just the 'Carrot' and the 'Stick' in the oldest form of mind-control know to our species: Religion!
Spot on Bill. I keep saying on religious sites that accept Jesus or eternity in hell is just a blatant ultimatum. No one likes being given an ultimatum but that's exactly what it is and how ppl should see it. It's a threat, that's the god of "love".
Thanks for your honesty, simplicity and Wisdom !
Very important episode 🌹
I love your relatable, compassionate approach. While I do enjoy listening to Dawkins, Harris, etc., I think your channel is incredibly important because your approach doesn't come off as condescending or snarky. I love a little snark, but it's not for everyone!
Thank you so much! 🥰
❤❤❤❤❤ fantastic analysis. Great critical thinking
I never got a doubting Thomas experience. Never. You know in person like it should be.
Right! "God" gives us reasoned thinking and then says "don't use it".
Thank you so much for this, Kristi. You've articulated a lot of my thoughts, spiritual struggle and eventual deconversion so brilliantly 👏 This video is so well-done and I hope your work reaches more people. 😊
Crimestop, in short, means protective stupidity.”
It's more dangerous than simply asking for ignorance. It's asking followers to accept things without evidence, in fact accepting things DESPITE evidence. And when the leaders get control of their followers' actual interpretation of reality, they are able to control literally everything.
They are able to get them to believe absurdities, in order to have them commit atrocities.
It's interesting how this applies to religions, cults, Marxism, and post-modern philosophy.
@@nonyadamnbusiness9887 It's authoritarianism in a nutshell. Modern technology is enabling it to be much more prevalent in my opinion. Reality denial is a feature of the Korean and Chinese governments to be sure, but also demanded by Erdogan, Putin, and closer to home, Trump.
I've read the book 3 times and don't remember "Crimestop". If only I had a better... what's it called, again?
@@pineapplepenumbra Orwell indirectly encourages free-thinking and creativity with thoughts, ideas and words.
I thought atrocities didn't exist because evil was just an opinion.
Doubts keep us safe. It only makes sense that they're good to have. SO looking forward to seeing/hearing you on Mindshift-Brandon's interview with you Sunday!

I've had experiences, and I still have doubts because I also have mental illness. Sometimes even seeing isn't enough. Btw, it was a generic experience, not necessarily a christian one. I love your videos, keep up the good work. But also, have hope. I always say to my mom, who is very christian, to be prepared for the unexpected. ♥
I think it's so important to realize that even when we experience strange things, we could still be mistaken. It's good that you keep an open and skeptical mind even to your own experiences. Not a lot of people are willing to do that!
If you can recognize that it was a generic experience and not tied to one religion, you are more sane than a lot of believers.
How convenient for the people in charge. 🤔
Gets interesting when you start digging into El and Yahweh in the OT. And the polytheism that was apparent.
Yes, they are evil.

Congrats on your partnership with Bart. You deserve it, for the work you do. I consider you a 'scholar' in your own right and better than many actual scholars, IMO. I'm atheist and not deconstructing but enjoy your content, Glad you are back. You were missed.
I have always thought that after Jesus was crucified, his followers said, hey, we can 16:17 make some money with this. Thus forming The Roman Catholic Church. I believe Jesus was a real guy, a yogi with great powers. So that he could get them to follow him. It was written about in the 5th century and has been expanded upon ever since
Thank you once again, Kristi 😊. This topic is important to me and I got a lot out of your words.
Doubting Thomas . . . the closest thing we have in the Bible to Sherlock Holmes.
Tom sounds like he had been slightly influenced by Thales, Socrates, Pyrrho of Elis, Timon of Phlius . . .

@@YourAlexander I said "closest thing in the Bible to Sherlock Holmes", not "was Sherlock Holmes"
Your take on my comments is way to literal. My parallel to Sherlock Holmes is simply rhetorical satire. Simply a different perspective on a moment in time within the narrative of the Bible.
Otherwise, we have zero external corroboration there ever was an individual named Thomas. You can only assume details of Thomas' life if you assume the entire Bible is historical fact. But that would include the original claim in Genesis that the Earth was created BEFORE the sun. The scientific fact is the sun came 500 million years before the earth.
I'm really loving your new videos. You're right on with this, and its probably the reason believers are stalking your comments and arguing with people who don't believe in their abuser god. They're trapped by the very thing you're talking about here-- they're told to question nothing on threat of eternal hellfire. We as ex-Christians don't have to live in that kind of fear and its awesome. Hail Satan, or whatever villains they believe in.
Wow I love this so much, thank you 🖤
Yeah the bruises thing is a great point Kristi. It says in Isaiah about the messiah: his face was marred more than any man. And he did get beat in the face by numerous roman soldiers! So he resurrected with the holes in his sides, but not the marred face? then they would freak out seeing him, and not recognize him. Or the face was good but kept "some" of the bruises. LOL definetly raises some questions there.
10:32 yet Christians call us “sheeple.” 🤦♂️
And ironically, present us a cosmological model where we are like pet goldfish in their god's fishtank.
It's projection. They don't want to acknowledge they're wrong.
If they were indoctrinated from birth I can understand that they don't want to admit they were duped.
It's like being married to an abusive man and that's all they know. Change is scary.
