Yeah, Alex Smith was a pretty good athelete coming out of college. Sure, Utah ran a spread offense with Urban Meyer but Smith's 1,072 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns vs 632 and 10 of McCarthy should tell you who was the better athelete. But I don't think he even said that J.J. was more talented, a worse athelete but he said he has a better arm in throw velocity is what he meant by that. The problem with J.J. is his reads and progression are not good despite playing in a pro style offense where he wasn't asked to throw a lot. Penix and even Bo Nix are leagues ahead of thim in this regard. If K.O.C. can coach him up then fine but he'll probably sit behind Darnold to start the season.

As a Michigan fan his biggest drawbacks are his one speed throws, everything is 100mph. But he can work on that and with a qb guy like KOC, that’s an easy fix. His other one is his ability to throw the ball away in certain situations rather than try to extend the play and end up losing yards. Other than that, he’s a cerebral passer. He can fit the ball into tight windows and read defenses with precision. If he works on his touch and ball placement, and can throw it away once in a while, he’ll be fine.

@@jamescooper3324I played baseball until I was 28… and damn did I always get this comment (compliment I guess?!) lol. I mostly played 3rd, CF & LF, and SS (unless the team I was on had a stud at SS already).
When I was at the hot corner my pitchers hated me lol, like you said I could only throw the ball 100mph, if I didn’t throw full tilt I didn’t know where it was going to go… but at full tilt I could hit the mark from about anywhere in the field (I threw out a lot of base runners from the outfield until people just stopped running on me lol).
Anyways when I was at 3rd the pitcher would have to get his out the way or hit the ground because I throw frozen ropes right through the mound, I couldn’t throw over the pitcher cause it would go over the first baseman’s head lol. Throwing low it would be right to 1st base’s glove or at worse case an easy long hop from the infield grass. But ya it was always funny seeing the “oh shit” look on my pitcher (out of the corner of my eye)!

Same was said about Trevor Lawrence. Look at college championship QBs - only Burrow recently is where it has translated.
Mahomes, Allen, Lamar were not in those categories, yet they're among best QBs in league, college/HS 'winning' doesn't necessarily translate to NFL, usually because QBs get to play on teams with talent discrepancies at those levels much of the time.

Who cares. If he is bad then just draft another qb later. Just keep trying. Not like the Vikings will be missing out on anything.
