I don't see why anyone would be empathetic for Kirk Cousins, who has been the closest thing to an NFL mercenary since he left Washington. He negotiates and signs only for large, guaranteed contracts, which he did twice in Minnesota. He left Minnesota for Atlanta solely because the Falcons offered him the contract with the largest guarantees. Cousins just got to Atlanta less than two months ago -- he has no built-in equity with the Falcons, and he had no such loyalty with Minnesota after six years playing there. Teams with much better quarterbacks who were entrenched in their organizations far longer than Cousins (Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, etc.) made similar succession plans without involving the incumbent quarterbacks. Cousins' job is to help make Atlanta competitive and help further the development of Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Bijan Robinson over the next two years, and he is getting paid the market value of a quarterback of his caliber. He will be 36 years old at the start of the season and is coming off a ruptured Achilles injury. Biggest head scratching pick in the first round.....not a knock against Penix, but you just committed $180 million to a new qb and now you put his successor rather than giving him another weapon
not exactly kirk is honestly a 2 year deal as his entire guaranteed cash is done after season 2. So his 3rd and 4th year you can cut him for no hit at all. I you think Penix is ready by year 2 then you roll with him and use all that extra kirk cap space for team building around penix.
Cowherd is so full of hot air . First he says McCarthy is hopelessly overrated. And then when he's drafted by the Vikings, "Oh - any quarterback can do well there". 🤣
It's a great pick. Cousins isn't getting any younger. Penix can sit and learn for a year or so. You gotta start thinking long term eventually, and the qb classes down the road prob don't compare to this class.
I cannot stand all you falcons fans and your organization for this. I will never let this go, you took the air right out of raiders nation. Out of all teams the falcons. 🤦🏽♂️
I gave you a 'like.' So, I love this pick and I would really like to why you don't. The Falcons literally said money is no object right now and went out and grabbed the best player. It's the best way to bridge Penix right now. You don't have to start him and throw him into that level of NFL speed and power so his health is not too great a risk until he develops a bit more and learns the game while not getting hit too much. Also, you have a solid veteran (while overpaid) starting qb. You definitely give insurance at the position.
@@brob8204 Your franchise has been a laughing stock for decades and you finally have a really good team minus a qb so you get a game manager in cousins and now you will win your division and possibly make it past round 1, so instead of drafting a stud lineman, DB, WR...you draft an injury pron 24 year old that won't play until 26 if at all. That is why your pick is worthless and stupid.

So what’s the plan here for the Falcons: If Cousins is ok and takes the team to the playoffs, yeah Penix sits a year but is probably expected to play in his second season. Or He stinks or gets hurt and then you shift in Penix. The main issue about both situations is that you paid this QB a bunch of money for the next 4 years and hamstring your cap for WHAT?! Plus it would be difficult to move off Cousins with his contract. Poor salary cap decisions being made in front of our eyes
Atlanta is looking at cousin like Matt Ryan going to the colts . If he slips just one time he will be on the trading block . As a life long Falcons fan I’m not mad at em !
@@matthewmatt5285 appreciate it Mat . That is exactly what I how it should be just because you don’t agree doesn’t mean you have to post . We can agree to disagree and that’s cool .
I do understand the pick. I know we are all shocked by it but think that Cousins at 35 is coming off an Achilles injury. If he goes down so do the Falcons without a QB. Heinicke?Nah. Morris realizes you can’t win in the NFL with bad QB play. Falcons ignored this fact for the last two years and thought the “genius” of Arthur Smith could overcome it. If Fontenot loads up on defense with the remaining draft picks or can make a trade for an edge rusher, I feel all will be forgiven. Taking Penix and signing Cousins is a “win now and win later” plan.
If he goes down, then we draft a QB next year. If he doesn't and plays well for the next three years, then we essentially got nothing for a top 10 pick. And we have nothing to trade for an edge rusher but our draft picks. There is no such thing as a win now and win later plan. What we are doing is winning a little now, and winning a little later. This is how you become this decades Pittsburgh Steelers. Never good enough to be a real threat.
Wasnt Kirk a stunning pick when he was drafted? I believe his being drafted IN THE SAME DRAFT was possibly even more stunning after they traded the farm to select RGIII. So he of all people should be willing to see past the all the so-called experts that are wrong all the time on draft results.
LOL Mr. Oh Brock Purdy looks so unprofessional with his hat backwards, can't pronounce the last name of one of the top WR's in the draft. Real professional there
Atlanta screws up players like Chicago does. It's like putting a Porsche engine in a 74 Vega. Revs up massively but burns out at the end of the driveway.
Clearly they think you don't need any defense to win because their opportunity to draft top defense talent won't be better and they won't have more money to sign one. Best case scenario the Falcons only get 1 or 2 years of being able to get away with paying a rookie salary. So stupid.
Man I love an accurate QB. Its probably the biggest obstical to overcome. Guys do it, Dak is one of the more accurate QBs in the NFL now. Man if your strength is accuracy you have a huge leg up. The problem is, his ability to avoid the rush is really in question. He just couldnt move out of the way of one guy against MI. Colin makes it sound like MI was just destroying them, that was not the case. There was one guy most of the time and Penix panicked or couldnt move out of the way. I thought WA was the better team, and Penix lost that game. There are not a bunch of plays in the NFL where the QB doesnt have to make 1 guy miss, If Penix can do that he could be the best QB in this draft...he is such a great thrower. Of course 2 acl's on the same knee is a big issue as well...this was a bold move Cotton.
@@skarnauch It wouldnt shock me, hes a joy to watch throw a football ( I played QB in HS and short stop in colleg). I really enjoy watching people that can throw that well and effortless. First will be his health, thats the biggest concern, 2 ACL replacements on the same knee is a really big deal. Second, if he can avoid the pass rush, than the sky is the limit. I know his 40 time, but he doesnt seem to have that ability to avoid the rush.
One thing that stands out is that his knowledge of defenses before taking the snap is top notch He said he got tired of getting hit so he just studied defenses which will help him more than anything in the NFL. His ability to process the play and make the right decision is extremely advanced.
@@skarnauch Is all there man. He had the best Oline in college football, by no small margin I think. That may have allowed him to stay healthy. It also allowed him so much time to sit back and show that arm. At the end of the day, if my job was on the line I wouldnt consider drafting him with 2 acls on the same same knee, until at least the 3rd round. Especilaly a guy who appears to have issues avoid the rush.
@@skarnauch Hey, imagine he didnt have those 2 ACLs. Hes been the best QB in college over 2 years. WIlliams was better last year, and Daniels was better this year. The 2 years combined, he was the best. He may have gone 1.

Drafting Penix, even if it’s a good move, underscores how bad the Cousins signing really was. You pay a good QB-and one coming off a serious injury-to championship-QB money. Good luck, Atlanta fans. You have my sympathy.
Penix took 90 % of his snaps from the shotgun. Does he have the footwork to hand the ball off? Does he have the drop back from under center footwork? Why is no one asking these questions? Please give me some real coverage instead of constantly repeating whatever some other shock jock has tp say.
Yall gotta think. The Falcons have bad luck drafting defensive players in the 1st round. Also that QB situation last year was so bad. I think it spooked them.
I love penix but they can’t get out of the cousins contract for at least two more years and they will still have a huge dead cap problem after so Penixs first real season, at 26, will be with a team that has less money than everyone else and he will only have two more cheap seasons after that. Oh and you get the added bonus of having players for the next two years who think you screwed them bc this pick could’ve been used better…and they have a defensive coach Collin, you hate those bc they are legendary QB stumpers…
80 sacks in 3 seasons, Falcons oline is not good at passblocking, london and pitts have 12 total TDs in five seasons played. Colin doesnt know what hes talking about, they finished 3rd in the worst division in football.
Colin is going to do to Penix what he did to Jordan Love. A lot of snide remarks for a year or two, a lot of "sources are saying this " crap, a lot of "I don't see it with him; the Falcons obviously made a mistake drafting him"....then Penix will be a lot better than you thought, and Colin will be spending the year backing up and saying, "Look at him! Makes sense if you think the Falcons are going to be good, they might not even be in position to draft a QB for awhile.
Wow this is a absolute, great pick, our future now looks very good,Go falcons and rise up Atlanta 🔥🏈🔥🔥🦾🦾
This just made Kirk Cousins public enemy number one down there in Atlanta, where they aren't gonna want a white boy playing QB when they've got a left-handed Penix waiting in the wings (visions of Vick to those fans, minus the speed).
Chill out 😂. Go eat something cause that's like #4 on fires to flame. We are more upset at management. Race ain't even entered the room yet.
@@arthurbynum but it's knocking on the door.
Facts cousins has a year two at most but he got paid
Cousins has a guaranteed 2 year contract. If it was me, I wouldn't care if Penix start with that contract 😂😂
Penix ran a 4.4 bro he’s just as fast as Vick
UW RB1 was hurt, MI could tee off and they did. Maybe same outcome but different game if DJ is healthy.
Falcons gonna Falcon😂😂😂. What a terrible pick.
Ask Kirk how much he likes the pick.Constanly looking over his shoulder.Cowherd just being Cowherd with his approval of the pick.
Atlanta passed up 3 great EDGE Rushers in the draft, gone….. it would only made sense if we never gotten Kirk Cousins in the first place to go draft Michael Penix.
Great??? Haven't played one down 😂😂😂
Yeah and at least 6 other teams passed on those “great” Edge rushers after the Falcons 🤔 Love all the armchair GM’s in the various RUclips comments today
Great?! Must be a casual fan talking 😂
Just should taken Rome
Love this pick for falcons, great o line.
Is it two years from now when it matters?
Giants admitted that Jones isn’t the guy AND that they killed their franchise by foolishly winning down the stretch last year.
Giants couldn’t even tank correctly. I hate being a fan
@@mgee1723I’d like to find out what they offered Pats for Maye
Biggest head scratching pick in the first round.....not a knock against Penix, but you just committed $180 million to a new qb and now you put his successor rather than giving him another weapon
I don't think they plan on Kirk playing 4 years is what it means.penix might get a chance at 25
No. Cousins is a 1- or 2-yr bridge qb. Plus, Cousins is coming off a catastrophic injury...
For 100 mill guaranteed? Thats crazy for a 1yr 2 yr player@@Lfg117
not exactly kirk is honestly a 2 year deal as his entire guaranteed cash is done after season 2. So his 3rd and 4th year you can cut him for no hit at all. I you think Penix is ready by year 2 then you roll with him and use all that extra kirk cap space for team building around penix.
@@Lfg117The question still remains why drop the bag on him? Y'all copers keep dancing around that.
Neither is Penix he will be 28 when cousins 4 year 180 million dollar contract is up.
@@lacarpetrondukemarriottThey have an out after two years and are paying him 62.5m of it this year.
Bears Oline still need 2 upgrades....center and OT
Belichick is like - PHEW!!! So glad I'm not in collaborative working BS
I cannot stand all you falcons fans and your organization for this. I will never let this go, you took the air right out of raiders nation. Out of all teams the falcons. 🤦🏽♂️
Anybody that supports this draft pick is either only trying to get clicks or is clueless on how to draft a winning NFL roster.
That is why your pick is worthless and stupid.
they knew at 8 they could get penix before even pursuing kirk. they know theyre gonna lose some sort of pick next year for tampering. the timeline doesnt make sense. i slept on it and im still pissed. not because i dont like penix, but because the decision is in direct conflict with WIN NOW. the last 4 picks do not make sense.
An arm like the 49ers yo montanyan.... Wow😅
F-bomb 😂
So what’s the plan here for the Falcons:
If Cousins is ok and takes the team to the playoffs, yeah Penix sits a year but is probably expected to play in his second season.
There is no shot he plays in the second season considering how much they would be paying Cousins to sit on the bench.
Atlanta is looking at cousin like Matt Ryan going to the colts . If he slips just one time he will be on the trading block . As a life long Falcons fan I’m not mad at em !
LOL,.You don't understand and I won't embarrass you by explaining it,.lol~

@@whitetie13 Gte more sleep and we'll talk about Lunacy LATER if you wanna~🙄
Cousin is the money man, not sure he’s in panic mode. 450 million + in contract money is mind boggling.
@@LionelLordOfTheThundercats exactly
Of course the Falcons should have drafted a QB. Cousins is an old man coming off a major injury.
So they went ahead and drafted a guy even more injury prone with 2 ACL + 2 shoulder tears in college. Brilliant!!!
I actually love the pick. Penix is insurance.
Great move now you got two quarterbacks injury prone
cousins and rodgers are going to stink it up next year.
Clearly they think you don't need any defense to win because their opportunity to draft top defense talent won't be better and they won't have more money to sign one. Best case scenario the Falcons only get 1 or 2 years of being able to get away with paying a rookie salary. So stupid.
Grooming a rookie QB is a luxury today.
One that costs $160 mil it would appear,.What an idiotic take~
I can't believe how many people are spinning this saying it's a good pick. It's an incredibly bad one on so many levels.
I think when all careers are over, MPJ will end up being the best QB from this draft.
One thing that stands out is that his knowledge of defenses before taking the snap is top notch
He said he got tired of getting hit so he just studied defenses which will help him more than anything in the NFL.
All of people that hate this pick don’t realize one thing. The falcons had 14 years to prepare for the future while Matt Ryan was here and they didn’t……… Now that they do, people are pissed. Learn ball and organization of a franchise.
Must've found out that Kirk won't be ready for start of season 🤷🏾
Plan must be to show that Kirk is healthy, and trade him next year. All while ensuring no one jumped you to draft him.
Drafting Penix, even if it’s a good move, underscores how bad the Cousins signing really was. You pay a good QB-and one coming off a serious injury-to championship-QB money. Good luck, Atlanta fans. You have my sympathy.
Falcons = Browns in epically boneheaded moves
Kirk was the best move Drafting penux=GLASS at 8 was the mistake
Penix took 90 % of his snaps from the shotgun. Does he have the footwork to hand the ball off? Does he have the drop back from under center footwork? Why is no one asking these questions? Please give me some real coverage instead of constantly repeating whatever some other shock jock has tp say.
Yall gotta think. The Falcons have bad luck drafting defensive players in the 1st round. Also that QB situation last year was so bad. I think it spooked them.
It spooked them so badcthey wasted 8 overall on the 5th best qb.
It’s idiotic you get Cousins or you get the rookie and have free cap. Not both
Great pick by Atlanta
no
You’re only saying that because these fools said it’s good. He’s gonna be 27 when he starts playing if Kirk doesn’t get hurt. Its not great at all
@@its570Key go cry into your pillow
@@Tony__Tone I’m not a falcons fan just telling yall the truth 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 good luck with 2 injury prone QBs
Good not great
I love penix but they can’t get out of the cousins contract for at least two more years and they will still have a huge dead cap problem after so Penixs first real season, at 26, will be with a team that has less money than everyone else and he will only have two more cheap seasons after that.
He's a franchise QB!". This will be Colin flip-flopping at his finest.
This was such a dumb pick.
If anyone had any doubts left that it was the worst pick of all time, now they don’t. If Collin like it, it obviously is the worst pick ever
Hes a left handed Teddy Bridgewater
Phenix will be the best QB out of this year's draft
Kirk.has 4 years no trade clause....Penux gunna be 28 when he starts? Lol
They front loaded his contract to cut him in two years. Still a ridiculous pick.
