- July is Swallow-tailed Kite population monitoring month. See yesterday's (7/10) shared post from www.arcinst.org about how to participate.
I stumbled upon this flock foraging event on Father's Day while heading to a friend's house to watch Mexico vs. Germany. The owner of the farm allowed me to set my camera up the next day and I got hours of footage of a small (6) flock of kites gleaning insects from the tops of the plants in the field. This is a fairly long video but I put some slow-motion highlights in the beginning including a 10% speed segment in which you can see the kite snag an insect from the field and then transfer it from talon to bill.
I saw a couple of these beautiful birds flying very Low in my front yard today , July 11 , 2023 , I stood very still and they flew right by me , right above my head , they were not even bothered by my presence , I have never seen these sooooo Up Close until today , it was AWESOME!! I live in Texas close to the Gulf .
I have a flock of about 6 birds that have been hunting over my neighborhood for a week or so. The first time I ever saw them was last year, when a pair passed through late summer. I have never seen these birds in the area (Shepherd, Texas) before now. They're so beautiful!
queenb67 I have a flock across the street from my house, they’re so beautiful, and amazing to see in North America. The flock had hovered over my house one day, but mostly stay near the pond across the street!
Saw 30 of these at confluence of Ohoopee & Altamaha Rivers yesterday. Quite a sight to see. Never saw a large group before.
大きいのに、姿だけでなく旋回も燕に似てる。低空で虫を狙うのに適した翼形なのかも。綺麗ですね。
I saw 3 of these in terry Ms last year around the last hurricane that came through in 2021. Odd to see them
I can't get over how agile these birds are on the wing, considering they can reach a little over 4 feet in wingspan.
This morning three of them were after my tea cup chihuahua. I guess they thought it was a rabbit. I picked up my chihuahua and ran in the house.
Not hardly! These birds prey are mostly insects, lizards and snakes, they would have no use for rabbits, cats, small dogs etc. they couldn't pick them up or eat them. I hear many uneducated people claiming hawks are killing their cats and dogs when those animals weigh 3 -4 times what the hawks weigh, just how do these people think the bird can pick up an animal that heavy? LOL!
