Oh man, he was so good. It's not even one specific thing I could point to. The entire performance just tells you that something is .... off about the Tall Man, even before you get to know more about him. Just the way he talks and acts, even his way of walking around looks like something that some "other" creature might think a human being would do as it walks around in a human skin. It's creepy as hell. O_o
My dad introduced me to Phantasm 30 or so years ago, all the good old movies Logans Run, Forbidden Planet. He's gone now but will always appreciate that, he loved movies.
My dad was a horror hound also this series freaked me out it was nice getting to watch with him as opposed to sneaking around to watch as I did early on with other flicks
The REAL tragedy is there was never a Phantasm pinball machine. You'd figure that would have been the perfect go-to product. Would have been a good fit for seedy, smoke-filled barrooms.
@@mayipluginmycordless Nah 😂 PHANTASM has never been that popular or successful of a franchise. Coscarelli was able to get sequels produced (with huge gaps of years in between) but he was never able to get bigger budgets. Parts 2 and 3 got a couple million each, but he tried to do a large-scale part 4 and failed.
such an excellent series. one of the coolest moments of my life was at a horror convention about 15 years ago. the cast was there, I was about 18, nervous to meet them. they were all super nice. Reggie had his infamous acoustic guitar with him, and asked if I play. I said I did. he said "here man, have fun!" and let me play his guitar. I played for about 15 seconds thinking I was going to give it back right away. he walked away from his table because he was having a conversation with someone else. "it's cool man, you can play until I get back!" . That was about 5 mins later. Angus said: "not too shabby....BOYYYY".coolest cast ever!
One thing I appreciate about Phantasm Ravager, is the amount of lines that The Tall Man has. He has some really great lines that feel symbolic about Angus Scrimm aging in real life.
I love Monster Madness, but you can definitely tell James isn’t watching these movies and basing everything on what he remembers from them years ago. Don’t get me wrong, it’s better than nothing. But for most of these MM vids so far it seems like he hasn’t seen these movies in years maybe even a decade+ for some. He doesn’t owe us anything and I’ll still appreciate any Cinemassacre MM of course.
yeah he mentions in one of the earlier episodes that this year had to be based on films he's already seen, because he didn't have time to watch anything new
I mean, he doesn't have to do it, or he could have done less videos and concentrated on films he's actually bothered about. No-one's putting a gun to his head.
So agreed! I went through so many copies of these films lending them out to people while in the Navy! #1 and #4 were my personal favorites, but #3 was great as well. Try watching those 3 while getting way too high....lol
If you watched behind the scenes on RaVanger, Angus Scrimm was actually the one who wanted to do it along with Don. They went to the original set of Phantasm and recited the beginning scene with Reggie and his friend. After that Don looked at Angus and Angus said "I don't have much time left here lets do one more Phantasm for the fans and us"
I remember watching the DVD extras in Phantasm 3 and they did a whole feature on the hearse car wreck. That was probably the best car wreck in cinema. They said the stuntman in the car was knocked out when they went to recover him.....
James... I have been a Phantasm fan since I was a child... I have been a fan of yours for 15 years... This is the day that I have waited for... forever!
Same feels, the characters, cinematography, visuals, camera work and music.. seriously a treasure (twisted but phenomenal). I remember watching it on vhs forever ago, but it's a film that stays in your memory.
Love Phantasm. I bought all the films about 14 years ago, they came in a sphere complete with spikes. It still sits on my shelf next to the hellraiser cube-set.
I highly recommend John Dies at the End. Made by the same director, rough in some places, it was impossible to condense that book into just one movie, but it was still a great trippy horror comedy.
I didn't have the pleasure of watching the Phantasm series until six months ago, but I'm so glad I did! "You think that when you die, you go to heaven. You come to me!"
This serie deserves a special review. As James did with "Friday The 13th" or the classic universal monster's movies. I guess he has not the time for that anymore D:
1 and 4 are my favorites. During Atlanta Days of the Dead 2014 or 2015, Angus Scrimm used a special cane that my ex and I found at an antique store. He was so polite and such a sweet man. I remember hearing him holler to me from the con tables saying "BOOOYYY!!"
I watched "In Search of Darkness" last night, good documentary. Some films didn't get enough screen time though, it needed to be 10 hours! Phantasm is a classic. I need to rewatch the sequels, haven't seen them in years.
Always good to hear someone else love 4 the most of the sequels. Seems like an unpopular opinion but it's also my favorite sequel for the same reasons.
As an 80s kid I grew up watching the Phantasm movies. The movies are so 80s in every awesome way possible ! The music especially. I like them all but if you are new to the Phantasm movies the only ones you actually have to watch is Phantasm 1 and Ravager !
I don't get this vibe at all. James has less to say because Tony just watched them all and has a fresher memory so he can be more detailed. alright james is talking bout phantasm!! And yes I saw all FIVE recently :P the last one got made a few years ago. Youre in this docu, James?? I ordered this last week :P
I love Phantasm and I am happy that 5 was finally made but that is really the only thing I enjoyed about it. The film was classic and felt like a Phantasm film 100% but the story just felt like the writers couldn't decide what movie they were making. The film was always meant to be the last in the series but it just felt like another sequel, all the definitive ending stuff was in the credits. But it was a beautiful film and I was happy to see everyone involved again, it was a happy film filled with nostalgia and love for the series.
Cinemassacre keeps delivering on films I would never think about watching. Now I really want to see phantasm 4. Brain Damage is one of my favourite movies now thanks to you guys 😍

One of the coolest parts to me is they kept the whole cast together for so long
There's something about keeping the original cast that makes it that much more dreamlike.
The actual passage of time with the aging of the characters, and the dementia themes in one of the dimensions of part 4 make it seem so profound.
@@thraknar it hit me right in the soul when Reggie started doubting his sanity.
Apparently they couldn't get Michael for Phantasm 2... Dont recall what the story was.

I think he's up there with Karloff for creepiness, to me he'll always be the tall man.
My grandmother took my mum to see this in the theater when she was a child, she thought it was going to be Disney's Fantasia...
Don't leave us in suspense. Did they stay for the entire movie? What did they think of it?
