Whenever I feel bad or envious because I didn’t start earlier, I remember one of my favorite quotes: “you’re not starting over from scratch, you’re starting from *experience.” I feel like if I had started earlier, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as I do now!

There's a really great quote from Hayao Miyazaki that I came across last night after editing this video that summarizes how I feel about feeling behind the kids who started their music journey young:
"To children unable to start, those who have already started are a different breed, who seem to be in a video-game world. A world in which the main characters carry swords and go on an adventure where they make friends. Not only children, but adults as well, may see this as a game rather than a drama. After all, children are a true mirror of adults."
Wish I had found this quote before making the video, but oh well, such is life 😂
P.S. if you noticed that I chose a picture of the piano Suzuki books instead of the violin ones for Joe Hisaishi, that was an accident but he's obviously known for his piano performances so it all works out I guess hahaha

I really love composing, it's so magical how something can be made from a simple concept..

This is such an encouraging and relatable video!!
I am completely self taught as a composer. I grew up in a tiny town in the middle of America. I didn't go to a music college or any university at all.
I had to grind through a lot of part time jobs through my 20s while honing this craft bit by bit.
But now I am living in Tokyo Japan and doing music composing and recording every day for anime and vocal groups!! My first "official" anime is actually airing on TV right now!!
Even if the dream feels impossible don't give up!! Keep going everyday and eventually momentum will build!!

I think I remember reading your comment on my Instagram some months ago! I'm very much in the grinding through part time jobs stage at the moment, but as a content creator, composer, coach, and what have you. Your story sounds AMAZING and congrats on your first official anime!! I'd love to hear more about your journey if you ever decide to share that online. I'm sure many others can learn from you :)

I'm a 50 year old composer who cooks part time in a restaurant to support my habit. The music I create is esoteric by nature, and I never broke into the film industry because 90% of the job involves networking and dealing with clients and I'm just not comfortable/capable of that sort of thing. It's a difficult field to break into and I credit anyone who makes a living from it. I believe the youth have the advantage here. There's no match for experience but knowing how to navigate through advancing technology and social media are essential skills to have for a successful film composing career.

Started music late at 20. I think starting late is a relative term. You’re not old! I Taught myself piano and guitar. Went to music school shortly after. Got the BA degree and taught for a minute. Went back to school for Respiratory. Always worked in the medical field. I still do. I pretty much gave up on music for most of my thirties but I I always had an I interest in film scoring. I decided to pursue film composing at 40. I found a teacher and got back out there. Played some piano gigs. I got my first scoring gig last year. Just don’t give up and fight that inner critic in your head everyday! Thanks! 🦋

Starting late is definitely relative, you're right! I was also self taught but never went to music school and became a scientist while I worked on growing my network as a composer and everything. It's amazing that you came back to music and were able to get your first gig all those years later. Thanks for sharing your story!

    🦋…wonderful and insightful as always!
Sometimes I sit in the “I’m too late” pit BUT, there really is something to the whole life experience thing and its affect on perspective, risk-taking and what truly matters and is important to you!
When I think of all that and everything that has lead to today, I know, 100%, I wasn’t meant to do this any earlier! I would have given up the second it became even slightly hard!
Right now, is exactly when I am meant to pursue this, at the ripe old age of 35! And I feel lucky and grateful that I found it …I know not everyone does! ✨

🫡🫡🫡 (noted, you are a real one hahaha) I feel exactly the same! I was one of those stubborn kids that if you told me to do something, I wouldn't want to do it haha 😅 It had to be this way honestly!

Never forget that no matter how much experience or training in music you have, you are unique and whatever music you compose will be unique too. This is everyone's advantage. Hans Zimmer has a large team of elite musicians that collaborate with him on his projects. Why would you be intimidated by this. Music does not have to be riddled with music theory technical nuance. Some of the most beautiful and inspiring music ever composed is technically very simple. Embrace your uniqueness and soar.

Insightful as always :) Maybe early starters and late starters can partner up as a duo for the best of both worlds!

I'm 53!!!!!!!! UGGGHHHHHHHHH.......LOL. I started producing before DAW's so there was no way for me to really break into film composing. I'm primarily a pop producer but I like to incorporate string arrangements if it serves the song. But I've always wanted to do a film score. Anyway, because I've been doing music in one way or another since I was 16 I don't really feel like I needed to start earlier. I just came along when I did and used the tools I had access to. It's so different now because kids have so many resources online that you can learn anything if you have the will.

Yeah, the difference in technology starting 20 years ago vs now is huge! The resources available today through the internet is one thing I'm really grateful for. I think you can totally do a film score :)

Your topic and contents are great!! Thanks so much! However, be a bit more audible with your voice. It is a bit difficult to hear you correct.. Perhaps you can get a Podcast microphone. The reason is, since you talk about 'life', we listeners don't want is to go to deaf ears.. Thanks!
