As a composer with a lifelong marketing career and degree in marketing, I would make the following suggestion. It is something that was drummed in my head when I first started working in my first marketing job in cardiology many years ago. I never forgot it. It's WIIFM which stands for "what's in it for me". Your career in film music is not about YOU. It's about helping the film director/producer solve a problem. Most directors want to be reassured a film composer can deliver on tight deadlines under pressure of hifting edits required etc. Can they trust YOU as a composer to deliver promptly. Can they trust YOU to be a team player. Your marketing message to a film producer/director should demonstrate that you have the qualities necessary to minimize the risk in hiring you.

There is no reason for "us" artists to be ashamed of wanting to present ethnic music to be represented more in our social lives. Im a "white" guy from South Africa and teaching under-privilaged people music theory, with the aim to get them (trad music/beliefs) to be represented in the industry. So, be proud if you want to have your agenda represented in society and the media that people consume, and never apologise for being insenstitive about wanting to present the world with new cultural values that are not discovered yet. I recently finished my first professional gig scoring a short film and was genuinely surprised to find I was scoring without any footage. For absolutely no reason at all, I thought I would get at least a rough edit of the scenes I'd be scoring.. But I did not. I scored it blind, going on just the script and the story (which is, of course, the most important thing) as well as the director's notes and ideas about what they want people to feel when they hear the music. Thankfully, my practice is often creating scores for the fantasy/romantasy books I read so I wasn't super put off but, I was a little unnerved by it. Like, what if my music really doesn't fit with the scene?! And I will not know until I see the finished film!! Anyway... My big lesson during my first time professionally scoring a short film is that, you might get footage. But it's really, really common not to. 🙃

The Steinbeck quote that I paraphrased in the video but didn't read out loud bc I kept messing up LOL: “In human affairs of danger and delicacy successful conclusion is sharply limited by hurry. Interesting video. I think the problem has to do with the way many people understand and use social media. Using it as your online personal avatar (think of the early days of Facebook back in 2005-2010) is completely different from using it as your business tool (for many people it has kind of replaced their websites). Trying to dial close to the intersection of both approaches can be problematic and honestly quite frustrating (cause there's no common ground). Think of sharing a very cool edited and produced 'pitchy' video in your family group chat or conversely sharing a photo of the muffins you baked yesterday in your professional website. It doesn't make any sense right? Many people do that with their social media and wonder why it doesn't quite work.

How did you learn how to compose for film ?

Following your dreams despite the shadow of failure quite simply IS the meaning of life. Whether you succeed or "fail", if you're not following your own path, you're following someone else's. Perhaps you're a gifted scientist, but you're most certainly a gifted musician. You're resourceful and imagining creative ways to realise your dreams. Some decades ago I needed to make similar decisions and thank God I did!! The seemingly impossible, can be.

I get what you’re saying. Everybody has different viewpoints on whether they care whether their project is tied to a big company or not. I personally get excited either way, but I absolutely FAINT whenever I get an opportunity to work with Disney, because it’s my dream company and blah blah blah. But when I work on indie projects, I’m thrilled!! and honored that someone liked me and admire my skill sets enough to bring me along to join the adventure. Thanks for another good video! I really need to work on this. My feeling that the only way to "justify" being a film composer and be taken seriously is to do huge budget blockbuster films has gotten in the way of ever trying to do any real networking at all. The thing is, what I love is the creative process of making music, and what I want more than anything is to work with other creatives, so it's time to let go of the idea of the dream of hollywood.

Thank you, Cheska. I understand perfectly what "I Don't Care..." means. I don't look at it as a negative trope, but I look at it as being influenced, dictated, and/or motivated by those types of things. When I was younger, yes..., most things that was popular were inspirational to me because at that time I was very impresionable, however, LIFE has a way of helping you define yourself at the proper time, and it's in those moments when you finally see what truly motivates, inspires, and causes a mature level of disipline for you to follow, that's not influenced from and by the "shinny things" but those things that "Truly Mater" to you and the path you're on and in. So, that's why "I Don't Care" Thanks (again) Cheska. HOME RUN with this.

Asian parents engraining the idea that the prestige or high status of your college translates to your self worth which then led to Asian kids believing they need to work at top firms. Every single one of those kids now are depressed and abuse substances. Chasing your passion and not status is sustainable. :)

It’s so good to practice but writing to write is haaard isn’t it sometimes? I really struggle when I feel I have nothing to say? I think it’s why I often use moments from the books I read as stimuli for composing … it gives me a reason and with that I do end up practicing more! Thank you for sharing your process!! ❤❤

Sometimes i get tired. i think i may not be getting what i'd want to have in terms of a job maybe because i'm not using the right approach.
