"Could you kill someone with horse tranquilizer?"
March 23, 1993. Haylei Jordan is 8 when her mom asks her if she wants to leave everything behind. The little girl doesn't realize that her mother has just cut off her ankle monitor and wants to take her daughter on the run.
March 18, 2002. Almost a decade later, Haylei is faced with another terrible decision after years of turbulence and uncertainty: she has to protect her mother even if it means calling the cops on her for what she has just confessed to her.

She put her daughter in that position in the first place though. Of course we should protect our kids but we should also know better than to put them in danger in the first place. She's not some kind of saint and it's weird to act like she's just an innocent victim in all this.

She did kill in cold blood - she could have left with her daughter. This was not the same thing as self defense that happens in the moment as you are being attacked. My heart goes out to the mother - she made a lot of bad choices and was in trouble a lot, but she obviously had a tenderness for her daughter. Ultimately, we can't take the law into our own hands as civilians and murder another, yes in cold blood.

It's weird to say, but the letter Elisa wrote to her daughter really is beautiful. It sounds like she truly understood her mistakes and just wanted to apologize and finally return all the love and support she got from Haylei over the years. As i too was asked to not let my past overcome me.. but to take everything i learned (both the good and bad) and use it as a lesson to become the amazing Mom and person that i am today.. You are truly incredible.. inspiring and heart warming when for a long time i didn't know my heart would ever be complete again.. Seriously you should have a book written! lol Continue to stay strong beautiful! Your Mom is so proud of you.. and so are the rest of us! just as i know my Mother would be of me.. Xoxo

I lived with my alcoholic mom who always tried to be a great mom but…when I was 14 I ended up going to live with my sister while my Dad worked in Chicago…the unstableness of daily life with my mom was scary, I learned stability and dependability from my sister and did well for decades but once my divorce came about I went through that instability for a couple years and fully regret putting my kids through those years, my kids were very fortunate that their dad was a good father but I know I scarred my kids 😢

So so so so tragic. She was a good woman , a loving mother, she just struggled mentally and she didn’t know how to get help. I’m in floods of tears hearing how sad she was leaving her daughter, she loved her so much. She raised a beautiful, amazing, law abiding child. She should have never confessed without a lawyer. A good lawyer would have easily got her a less sentence and the help she needs. My heart breaks for this mother 💔💔💔 I hope she is watching how amazing her daughter is now, she would have been SO proud 🥹😣

I know people feel bad for the killer but she always chose the wrong path and dragged her daughter along. She killed him because she was cheating on him and was probably tired of him questioning her. She took the cowards way out. No sympathy for cons who take advantage of others

Kudos to Haylei for doing the right thing. It must have been a very difficult decision for her to make at such a young age. Despite all the MANY mistakes that Alyssa made (including murdering the man who laid his hands on Haylei)... Alyssa still managed to raise a level-headed, intelligent, caring daughter. Haylei is a perfect example of not having to let your past define you, and that a bad childhood doesn't excuse bad behavior.

This gutted me in ways I was not expecting, quite honestly. Beautifully told story.
Haley is truly something special. And one thing that I hope she knows for sure is that despite her mom’s sickness ~ she clearly loved Haley with her entire soul. I almost feel like she sacrificed her life in the belief that continuing to live would hold Haley back. That, along with her decision to drop Haley off on the side of that road, was the most selfless, courageous thing that she had probably ever done in her life.
In hearing all sides of the story, I do feel as though there were definitely mitigating circumstances in this situation. It seems to me like she truly felt trapped, already had tons of years worth of trauma resting on her shoulders (even if some of it was self-induced trauma) and didn’t think there was any other option than what she and her cohort did to Larry. I think that she didn’t feel good about what she did. I don’t think she was a terrible person. I think she was just so very mixed up and continued living the only way she knew how to live.
There is such beauty in this story, although I am still mindful that a man’s life was taken.
I just feel this immense sense of pride, wonder and gratitude for the path that Haley chose to take for her own life. Her mama knew that her daughter was so incredibly special~ and she was right. Haley’s story is an amazing testimony for anyone who is able to listen to it. No matter where you come from, no matter what awful things may come your way throughout this crazy thing called life~ we can choose to do something different and do things that we might never have thought we could do.
Sorry for the long post~ I am just stunned at who Haley has become and how she has turned out. May God continue to bless this woman and her lovely family ~ she is deserving of all the beauty that she has created for herself.
In closing~ the words that her mother wrote to her was so much more than just a goodbye letter. It was a gift to her daughter and also the ultimate act of making amends in the only way she felt she had left.
