January 15th 1974, 15 year old Charlie Otero is dropped off at school by his dad just as every other day, but only a few hours later, he would come home to unimaginable horror: his family was the first target of the BTK killer. With no evidence on who did this, nightmares follow Charlie as he fears for his own safety, while the BTK attacks more and more people. It would take 30 years to finally catch him, after taunting the police repeatedly, where Charlie would finally be able to confront his family’s killer face to face, and get his revenge.

It’s so sad when that man mentions that he could’ve saved his mother if he could’ve loosened the ropes. He was only 5, to go through life carrying guilt for something that wasn’t his fault at all is so awful.

So true.. My youngest brother is his age now 5 and i can't think of him doing something at his age where he should be playing,growing up healthy, going to school and so much more. So sad to see him saying that and all the other victims what they had to go through.

The Elmer Rudd actually got me to chuckle, even tho the story was so sad. He really did look like Elmer, lol..but I agree he was the worst social sewage person ever. I hope all the survivors and their families find peace knowing he's behind bars and will never get out.

I've heard of BTK before, but I've never till this day heard from the survivors of the families he destroyed. Their stories are so much more powerful than his ever will be.

There are also videos of his daughter tallking about the impact on her life and there is one video of her first interaction with him in 18 years. She's been helping investigators solve cold cases possibly perpetrated by him this whole time since his conviction.
@@McQueenMelissa thanks for that! I'm gunna have to check it out! Good on her! She's trying to undo/bring closure to families her father tore apart. One is the devil the other an angel, and you'd never know they were related by their actions unless it was said.
Mr. Otero's story broke my heart so completely from the first time I heard it. He told the police not to allow his younger siblings to arrive and enter the home...all the while they were inside dead. Kudos to the detective who saved that (bodily fluid) sample, never contemplating that it would be so very valuable one day.
Don't act like he's some hero. Keep in mind the video mentioned that he would later become physically abusive towards innocent people. What he went through does not excuse or justify his actions. He's not all that much better than the evil that was the catalyst for his future actions if you think about it...

"Hurt people, hurt people", that's what untreated trauma does. It causes us to not control our emotions and harm other people. It is still sad that he didn't want his siblings to see what he saw, both parents killed. When kids see such terrible things, they need to immediately get therapy. If not they will act out sometimes in the same way they saw as a child

How can anyone trace a floppy disk? You just use a computer that is not related to your job or life, use a username that is not related to your real name etc then buy an empty floppy disk in a random store and fill it with data.
@@FluffySylveonBoipeople think that when they clear a floppy disc there is no data on it. Clearing a disc doesn’t reset it back to new, it still contains metadata/ traces of it’s previous contents

The horror these children went through is insane. The helplessness every time I watch one of these videos is so big but we have to remember that while we are living our lives these things are happening to other innocent people
That knowledge really puts life's inconveniences into perspective.

Charlie isn't some saint either. They mentioned some of the scummy things he did to other innocent people and tried to justify it with what he went through that day when his family were victims of BTK. Past trauma does NOT excuse or justify physically abusing other innocent people.

This was amazing! This is the first commentary EVER that I heard about BTK that focused more on the victims and the carnage that he left behind because of his evil and not focused on Dennis Rader.

My mother is from Wichita, my grandfather was a prosecutor during some of the first few murders of BTK and that had scared him half to death. So the family on my mothers side know all about this as they lived in fear due to this man for several years.

Never knew the story of the BTK killer before. This was presented in a way that focused on the victims. Story well told.
i don't know much about truecrime or serial killers but i'm glad to learn from this page because of the respectful way it treats the victims and families. there's no video of you that i have not shed a tear.
That.... Was extremely emotional. I feel so much pain for the poor children of these victims. To see how different and troubled their lives became as a result of one horrid individual is just so damn heartbreaking. To imagine what could have been... I'm so happy that the two men found each other and not only helped each other overcome their own personal demons, but to also help each other truly heal, truly be happy and to believe in their faith again.
I have no words...just utter devastation, loss. My sympathies to Charlie Otero, Steve and all surviving families of victims. I'm glad Charlie has turned into a different person, bonded with Steve. I wish them both healing, and other victims' families too.
Deciding to celebrate, remember his family and the love they had, remembering his parents love for each other...I'm so happy. Always let the light of love shine, live in your heart...keep their memories with you everyday.
Holy shit, this poor man was hearing how his ENTIRE family was viciously murdered when he gets a call that his son was hit by car and is in a coma. So sad.
What he left those kids to find is so disturbing. 🤬 can understand why it affected them so badly.
Seeing the survivors is always fascinating because most media focuses on the victims and killers. The survivors are often nameless and believed to be living “a quiet life” after the traumatic events but the reality is much worse and the healing is never ending. It can be impossible to move forward and have healthy views of life when one’s childhood was robbed. My heart breaks for all victims and survivors. I understand the very valid feelings of wanting to seek revenge after witnessing your entire family lose their lives. I can’t imagine the pain but the beauty in this story of two survivors living for each others loss is inspiring for all victims who are still going ❤

24:20 - The cops didn't lie, you cannot trace a floppy disk. However the document file on the floppy contains the meta-data (the registration info) that caught him. If he used a plain text file instead of Word or some word processor software he may not have been caught! It's was not the floppy, but the document format he choose that gave him away.
I feel terrible for the victims and their children forced upon to see what a cruel spawn kill their family.
I can`t even imagine losing any family member this horrific way. Can`t even stand the thought.

@@benmcreynolds8581true SK's are acting on a fantasy, which requires certain scenes to be created or activities to be completed. Because of this, not all SKs change how they kill. Also most SKs are not higher than average intelligence, only a handful of the most well known ones. If they were all smart, changed up their MO, and were not bound to their fantasy the police would never detect it as a series unless there's DNA which is relatively new in forensics.

Police departments give applicants IQ tests and only hire them if they have average or below-average scores. Because they've learned that they'll quit the profession sooner than later if they're above average.

We need more help for victims of trauma, especially children. It’s no coincidence these two boys ended up living the way they did, they experienced so much pain and the images they saw were etched into their minds forever. In those days, people didn’t even know about trauma. So many people thought children would just adapt and get over things. Not at all. Killers don’t just kill the initial victims, they murder the family spirit too. So awful 😞

Why people always think it was drugs deal gone wrong everytime a family’s dead? Shit, some people are so damn evil they have no hearts for anyone.

Likely due to a few factors- one being that the family didn't seem to have issues with anyone. Then there were pretty much zero clues left as to who did it, indicating it was professional, or at least someone who did it more than once and knew how to not leave evidence (as might be tied to other criminal endeavors). Last, and I think this most likely why, was that they were tortured. Torture is generally either highly personal or to send a message. If it's personal, it would be just to the one person they had an issue with. But if you're some criminal kingpin wanting other underlings to know what happens when you cross them, that might include this level of horror on an entire family. None of this is concrete or anything- obviously, because this was the work of a single psychopath- but as far as trying to find reason, you go with statistics and things you've seen a few times before in similar circumstances. That would be the only explanation they could come up with to explain such a horrible thing.
That is a cope for people that wnt an explanation so that they can go on w their lives w the uncertainty of the unsolved crime and at large killer.

There used to be a belief that people only incur this kind of violence if they're involved in crime plus the term serial killer was rather obscure before the 70s
This is one of the most emotional documentaries of the btk killings i have seen. It's really well done and humanises the victim's families and the long aftermath of trauma and healing for them.
The media has always had a trend to over sensationalize these sick pieces of work and give it a nicknames and capitalizing on the fear of people
This is, hands down, the best true crime channel on RUclips. The amount of respect this team shows for the victims of monsters is just nothing short of amazing. The narration is always perfect. This was truly very emotional. I'm so very glad that this evil serial killer was finally caught and that the family of the victims found some sort of "closure'' at the trial of this worthless piece of s**t! So many lives destroyed, I'm glad that Charlie and Steve found each other and can draw strength from each other. Sending a big hug of comfort to all of the victims families from afar.
