My brother in law was a Cavalier drummer back in the day. So proud. Sad to say he passed away seven years ago. So many Cavaliers came to his memorial. Tears right now.
I believe this is one of the best shows to ever grace the drum corps scene and that it is horribly underrated and misunderstood. And for those bing pots who think this show is "political"... JUST BECAUSE THERE'S A RAINBOW DOESN'T MEAN IT'S GAY!!!!!! The show is literally titled "On Madness and Creativity" for Christ's sake! Get over yourself and your homophobic beliefs. ANYWAYS... I'm not going to write a whole essay about this at the moment, but here's what I can conjure up. The show encapsulates the inner struggle of an artist (or easily put "the artistic struggle) similar to likes of someone such as Cézanne (artist). Yearning for the creative stroke of genius that was held back by the obsessive traits of perfectionism. The music is used as a wonderful tool to illustrate the - quite literal - madness of the mind by opening the show with dissonance and no sense of togetherness. And even once we find that "togetherness", it does not feel quite complete. It still feels rushed an uneven and we see and hear this great rise of pain and frustration that leads to a metaphoric car crash in the brain. Thusly ending the first act, and bringing us to the second act, where we hear the doubtful voices in the mind of our artist. I liken the corps and the props in this show to be the representation of the brain. A literal cage rather than a metaphoric "caged mind". The performers acting as the neurons and the tarps acting as the artistic connections being made, whether or on the artist knows of it. We see the cages open, freeing the creativity, and start to see many more paths appear. Then finally, we have the third act. An act where the artist overcomes the mental block and the creative juices flow (represented by the color change of the tarps and performers). Now, why does the ending sound so melancholy with the usage of "Oh What a World"? Because though the artist is free at this moment, they will always be bogged down the strive for perfection, forced to repeat this process over, and over, again. I feel that the high strung strings run at the end, along with slurred "Bwaaa Bwaaa" by the euphoniums before the power chord show this speak this idea very well. And so, with a complete piece of artistic work, the artist ends the show with a brief relief, with that need for perfection always looming.
This show took a lot to understand, even as someone who marched in the show itself. But you were pretty close with your analysis of making something beautiful out of madness. Because this was our 70th anniversary, the closer was an homage to the corps history performing our corps song “Rainbow” and including the rainbow tarps along with the color guard stepping over the hornline in reference to the corps in the 1970’s! Also it’s great to see you react to so many corps shows!
This show was one of the first Cavaliers shows I saw in person. I absolutely loved it, and it was a huge part of my decision to age out with Cavaliers in 2022!
For anyone that is interested in a game app for their phone. Someone actually did create a game where you can take your own drum Corps on tour. It’s pretty cool
Wow, I have NEVER caught that, and I've watched the first part of this show a million times. This is yet another piece of evidence that says that tarps are NEVER a good idea. I'm glad he didn't hurt himself real bad. That could've been very nasty.
I just feel that it's a big gay coming out story -- wave those rainbow flags, boys! (even a little nod to Friends of Dorothy with that little bit of Somewhere Over the Rainbow). Gorgeous!
Somewhere Over the Rainbow is the corps song! I love that they threw it in this. The show is full of Cavaliers easter eggs. ALL the music was SO thoughtful. Maurice Ravel's Boleros and Anne Adams' Unraveling Bolero were the inspiration behind this show. Not sure how someone can conclude that this is political when it is literally about artists overcoming life's obstacles.
It is sad to see whats come of DCI ... and especially the Cavaliers. So much "in your face" attitude. Gone are the amazing drill sequences and stunning brass section. Just don't argue with me, I don't care.
Granted I agree on the drill but musically and uniform wise I think cavaliers sure hit the nail on the head this year. If they keep it up I’d like to see what they will do in 2022 if DCI gets to run a full season.

She should definitely react to Cavaliers 2019. She would be in love with the 2019 Cavies ballad.
I know someone who marched that show
@@cam.right.creates Same 👌
Yesss. Cavaliers 2019 was an awesome show, that Hornline in particular was just incredible. And the Ballad was probably my favorite hit of the season
I'm in love with this ballad

This show was strange to watch early season because the tarps were quite difficult to control in outdoor stadiums, tripped up the performers a lot
How is cody commenting 23 hours ago while everyone else seconds ago XD

Definitely an enjoyable show. Keep up the DCI reactions! :)
Great kids on this drumline. I know a couple of the instructors and they took a picture with my kids and gave them a signed drum head.

Hi Courtney! Love your videos!
I just feel that it's a big gay coming out story -- wave those rainbow flags, boys! (even a little nod to Friends of Dorothy with that little bit of Somewhere Over the Rainbow). Gorgeous!
I just feel that show designers put too much politics in drumcorps.
@@jeffgray7922 coming out/being gay isn’t political though
