Not "Over 9,000"? I'm shocked. Ocean dub is my favorite dub. Almost everyone sounded sounded like their were forcing their voices in the Funi dub. It's weird.
I live in the UK and I still remember the first time i watched DragonBall Z when i was a kid. I was in a break room at a music studio where my dad worked as a sound engineer. I was eating fish and chips whilst watching TV and there was Cartoon Network. There was an announcement, "Coming up next, Dragon Ball Z!". I was blown away by the "Rock the Dragon" Theme and the very first episode I watched was about Gohan training under Piccolo. Struggling to stay alive, Gohan remarked he wanted to see his dad again and i see Goku running in snake way trying to reach King Kai. Suddenly the next thing i remember is Gohan going berserk on Piccolo which leads to Gohan transforming into a great ape. Piccolo destroys the source of the transformation and Gohan reverts back to normal. That episode alone (Despite that i realised later it was a filler episode) was enough to get me hooked on the series as well as the reason Gohan is my favourite character. I remember watching the later parts of saiyan saga where Gohan transforms again into a great ape against Vegeta. I also remember seeing the Namek and Frieza saga which sealed my love for Dragon Ball Z when Goku became a Super Saiyan (It was around the time there were changes to the voices because Funimation took over. It was unnoticeable at the time but was still cool). i didn't have much time to watch the Android and Cell saga but i did see Gohan become a Super Saiyan 2 as well as Goku's sacrifice and Cell's defeat. I don't think i payed much attention to the Buu saga because i thought the Cell saga was a good ending to the series (I eventually got around watching it later in the future to see how it all played out in the end). All and all, I had a hell of a great time watching DBZ.
This is an excellent video! Finally I can reconcile my memories with reality! After moving from the UK to Canada in my early 20's in 2005 and later rediscovering DBZ I couldn't figure out why the funimation dub seemed different from what I remembered. I didn't realise until seeing this video that I had been watching a completely different version! I miss the music for the Westwood Dub. I have had "Dragon Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Zeeeeeeeee" stuck in my head for the past 16 or 17 years!
What a great and comprehensive guide! Thank you for putting it together, I learned a lot! There was so much greatness in the Ocean dub: the unique music, the memorable performances of the voice cast, and I personally prefer the term ‘Instant Translocation’, as I feel it makes more sense than ‘Transmission’. Hearing the Funimation voices in the games was difficult. It felt like a betrayal, as did hearing new voices in GT and DB. I guess we’ve all had to make the adjustment to Funimation at some point since they’ve made everything consistent. I hope someone uploads all the Ocean episodes if they haven’t already. I’ve watched and finished both DBZ Funimation and Kai recently, it’d love to give Ocean another try for old time’s sake. Again, thank you for making this!
Dude this was an encyclopedia of DBZ UK all in one Video.... THANKYOU for explaining what happened with websites, Movies, episode and that AWFUL GREEN DUB.... It's shame that we can't buy the Ocean Dub ver tho..I really loved watching those.
The ocean dub was released on DVD twice. Once in a complete boxset which is 400+ dollars now, and another in volume releases back in late 90s/early 2000s that rather easy to find online.
@@theskyrax670 They made a re-recorded Ocean Dub in 2014, but it was never released. Really annoys me to know that they literally recorded an entirely new Ocean Dub for Kai, and it was never even used. What a waste.
@@theskyrax670 No they're not easy to find...they delete videos on facebook groups, Amazon hasn't got it and if you find 1 it's high-way robbery. Don't get me started on 2nd hand...
As a Canadian, we had one of (if not the most) interesting experiences with Dragon Ball in the English speaking world. I'm not sure if you already know about it, but you should look into it sometimes. Crazy cool story; plus, we got to see the show before anyone else!
I remember coming home from school and seeing that my mum had bought me the Janemba (With sword) toy. I had no idea at the time who the character was. I wish there was a way to watch the entire ocean dub of DBZ.
@@SteOver9000 Oo were can i get these? For what ever reason I cant watch the versions on Funimation as the music is just not as good and it doesnt feel the saewm as when I was a kid :)
Thanks for the nostalgia. I remember the ocean dub growing up and how annoying it was when you couldn't wait for the next episode only for them to go back over 30 episodes as they didn't have the rest sorted out yet. Very confusing and frustrating times being a DBZ fan in the UK at that time. I also remember once on cartoon network they played 1 funimation episode in amongst the ocean episodes...I was so confused at the time, I wondered why Vegeta and Gokus voices had dramatically changed, many years later I realized they had accidentally aired the wrong dub for us 😂 good times man thanks for the video.
Damn this was one big nostalgia trip, I dunno where to start, so this will probably end up being a mess of a comment but what the hell... I had forgotten most of these TV adverts for DBZ, EXCEPT the Cell Saga one with the bloke screaming down the megaphone, that one left such a lasting impression I could never forget it. CNX, what a great channel, had all sorts of cool programmes on there, but sadly, couldn't watch most of it since parents took over TV after DBZ finished and watched all their crappy soaps. I don't remember any of the films being aired on Toonami, but in late 2003, I did find a DVD of the Lord Slug film in a Woolworths, bought it without hesitation because fuck, it was DBZ and I had no idea there was any DBZ films at the time, only to be treated with the infamous 'Big Green' Dub... I was sure that during the Fusion Saga, we switched back to the Funimation dub (of course at the time not knowing that, only noticing different voices and music) for a brief period, and having looked through the comments, it seems it wasn't just me who remembered that. I don't remember a lot about the games besides seeing Final Bout in HMV once, then I did get Budokai 1 on ps2, but this was already well into the Buu Saga, so I knew who all the characters were on the case, just annoyed that most of them were not actually in the game... A mate in school had some of the DBZ figures, when I saw his Janemba one, had no idea who it was at the time, I thought it was just meant to be Cell and so I assumed he got some knock off figures from a market stall or something, you know, when they make shitty fake figures with random colours and that. DBGT, okay, it wasn't nearly as good as DBZ but.... I LOVED the music! Still to this day, even after sampling all the different Dragon Ball scores, the original Japanese DBGT score is my fave overall music from anything Dragon Ball, just a shame there's no official quality release of it, all I have is rough cuts I assume ripped from episodes. After DBGT, I was kinda done, I tried watching the original Dragon Ball, but couldn't get into it. Lastly, BRIAN, FUCKING, DRUMMOND AS VEGETA!!!!... I heard that he voiced Vegeta in an alternate English dub of DBZKai, I have no interest in Kai what-so-ever, but I'd watch that version for his Vegeta alone, if it ever gets released....
My god, I almost cried watching this, you literally brought back things in my memory that I had forgotten about, thank you so much for this, I still own the capsule corp toy but its in horrific condition!
A thumbs up for the major history lesson of how DBZ was doled out in the UK. Rather "brutal" at times, but this video is still very much appreciated. You did a lot of homework! Thank you.
Back then when I was young I always thought we had only one Dub, but boy was I wrong, I never realised we had different Dubs until I watched a re-run of the episode when Piccolo was powering up against 17 which his scream was different and loud lol. So I always thought it was 2 dubs, but 3 dubs we had in the UK, Man that was Crazy the dubbing for DBZ in UK was a mess for us. I want to say thank you for confirming the history of this DBZ in UK on Cartoon Network/Toonami/CNX, It put me at ease because I was always wondering when all the DUBs occurred during all those episodes. Now I can work on my project knowing this information. Once again I want to say thanks and you have earned a sub, You deserve more views for this.
Thank you so much for your kind words. This stuff took a lot of time to make so it's really rewarding that you took the time out to watch it. I appreciate it
The bit you talk about the toys is so perfect. Best example for me is having toys of "Super Buu" and then when we saw fat Buu I was just oh so confused... Also thankyou for clearing up about the Westwood dub. I KNEW I definatley remembered watching the Cell saga and Buu saga with Ocean dub as a child.
Watching this is taking back to my primary school days, very nice job!! I remember that imperfect Cell advert scaring me half to death back then! I do also remember some episodes of the Buu Saga showing the Funimation version as well as the Ocean version occasionally for some reason, anyone else remember that?
I vaguely remember them playing the funimation dub for the Buu saga. When Buu goes on a rampage you would hear the faulconer soundtrack. The only possible proof is old VHS tapes now but I am glad I am not the only one who remembers.
@@JBalmoreS EXACTLY!! That's what my brother did back in the day. For some reason they kept on switching the dubs for some reason and my brother recorded it
Brilliant! you certainly done you research. I want to make a couple of points though. I have VHS tapes that recorded CNX Broadcasting the Funimation dub of the fusion saga when CNX first launched. Westwood dub OST's was not just mega man but only on the fusion and kid buu saga they mix in monster rancher as well. Big green dub's cast have all been found out and they are on some videos on RUclips. Not that I'm complaining but I've always wondered why these dubs came to be but hopefully one day we will find out the truth and maybe including kai they will finally get release. Thanks again well done.
I've barely ever had any exposure to the UK dubs being a California kid, but man, Vegeta honestly had a kickass voice I actually really like his performance
Great Video!! It's amazing the UK has any Dragon Ball fan's, it was so odd to watch as a child with the change in voice actors and confusing merchandise. A credit to the show itself that many of us in the UK still love it to this day.
Thank you so much for this video; my sister and I were DBZ/GT obsessives in the UK and it's one of very few things we ever bonded over. I remember it being so confusing and frustrating that new episodes would just randomly be replaced with reruns or dropped from the schedule altogether, the change in voices (both from Ocean to Funi and back to Ocean) was hella confusing too. I have to say that the experience lasted longer than I thought, GT must have ended when I was starting my GCSEs. I remember being really emotional at the airing of the final GT episode, when Blue Water used the original Japanese theme song over the final scene of Goku walking away from Old Pan. I got bored of the BW dub halfway through Dragonball and never watched the series again, so it was blast seeing that AB Groupe somehow got as far as Broly! Thank you for the nostalgia boost, I'll send this to my sister too :)
Holy SHIT, that big green dub. Crystal balls. Umigame’s voice. YAAAAAAAAAH. “Songoku. Yes. Songoku.” “Come magic cloud!” “A supah namik?” “Guess we have no choice Vegeti.” “Big Green.” “The little robit”. “Big Green dead?” MR. POPO’S FUCKING VOICE. This is UNREAL. I’ve never heard of this dub before. I love it. I need to see more.
LOVE this video. Thank you! Brings back so much nostalgia. The licenses for Dragon ball in the UK was seriously messy and clearly the rights holders didn't know, or care much about the series. For me growing up and seeing the rare appearance of Dragonball Z toys was EVERYTHING & I actually loved seeing the out of context figures from movies & unknown SSJ forms at the time. It showed to me that there was plenty to discover... I remember once finding out that DBZ wasnt the 1st series and found the German dub of dragonball on Analogue TV... I used to sit there and watch it, without having a clue what they were saying. My god, those were the days.... That being said, im so glad Manga UK stepped in and gave the UK, Dragonball/z/gt/super in the best way possible... Just a shame that I was grown up and already imported all of the funimation dvds by then.
Thank you so much for making this video! Its good to have a video that explains what actually happened with DBZ here because I only have very vague memories and would never been able to put it order
Thank you for this! I remember noticing the voices and music changing a few times when I saw DBZ on TV. The annoying inconsistency goes some way to explaining why, as soon as i could get them online, I went through a phase of watching the Japanese version with subtitles. I gravitate towards the Funi dub over others now purely for consistency, Ocean Vegeta and Piccolo will always be my favourite dub voices though. Now I'm just skipping past all these licensing, filler and censorship issues and reading the manga instead 😅
Back when db played in the uk The first intro played on weekdays at 8:30pm While the 2nd was really common playing anytime sorta like how pop plays the english opening on weekdays and japanese opening on weekends
Very well researched and put together documentary on Dragon Ball in the UK! Multiple dubs existing for an anime was always a fascinating topic. I also greatly prefer the Blue Water GT opening over Step Into the Grand Tour.
Damn all this makes so much sense. I have been searching high and low for the Gohan SS2 tranformation we had in the UK. Still can't find it RUclips lol
I’m so glad someone finally made a video about how DBZ was different in the U.K. As a kid I found it so confusing why there were different voices and when I watched it years later online it was the FUNi Dub and not the dubs I remembered. Btw Where did you find the DB Movies Big Green Dub and DBGT Special? 😲
I recorded all them on VHS tapes back on the Super Sunday marathon. Including tons of BW Dragon Ball episodes. But sadly they got thrown out by mistake. 😓
Excellent video! I'm not from the UK but grew up with 4 different versions of this anime so I've been curious of other dubs from around the world and this helped 👍
Good work but I'd like to make a minor correction. The AB Group movies were dubbed as early as 2001. As evident by some of the Netherlands DVD's having a 2001 copyright date. In addition to a voice actor (forgot who) mentioning they were done in quick succession. So all of them could have been dubbed in 2000/2001 just aired/released later.
Watching Kai on Kix (now pop max) was what got me into DBZ. I remember hearing about the show from a friend and decided to watch an episode. (It was when Gero was fleeing from Vegeta and the gang) and from that point on i was HOOKED!. It's crazy to think if i saw the show a few years prior, it would of been quite confusing with all the dub changes. Great video keep it up!
When I was in year 5 we used to create DBZ folders and my mates would have folders of Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta before super saiyan 2 was a thing lol. We was so confused.
Omg yes we use to do that in primary school aswell. People use to print dbz images from google images and then we use to trade them with other people in school.
Lol true, I thought ssj3 goku were an different person and ssj4 goku as resurrected raditz because of tail also I thought adult gohan as goku's new best friend lol
I really love the Kikuchi Score but the Westwood Dubs soundtrack is pretty dope as well. Also I would have never guessed that the big green dub is from an english speaking country. Really great video, thanks for the effort.
I remember seeing a super saiyan 3 toy at a store as a kid before while the original super saiyan was still fresh in the U.S. I ended up coming to the conclusion that Raditz would be wished back and become a super saiyan.
yea, makes sense and maybe Nappa is the smartest Super Saiyan, because if he were to become super saiyan 1,2, or 3 no one would be able to tell which one
Not sure if this was pointed out already but the promo at 30:09 uses the Funimation dub. Apparently in the UK they briefly went back to the Funimation dub for a couple Fusion Saga episodes before switching back over to the Westwood dub.
I remember that well, one of them was even made into a promo for CNX with Buu on the lookout going "No more! No more waiting!" When it came to the end of its initial run, and CNX/Toonami started re running them. The Ocean dubs were in place of the handful of episodes that were funi.
Great video man. This was like a trip down memory lane even with the adverts. Brought back some good memories and appreicate the work you put into this video 🙏🏿
"Instant translocation" is the biggest sin of the Westwood Dub, always thought I grew up in the UK with the ocean dub, but it was very likely the Westwood version. As I recognise a lot of it now, great video. Thank you so much for this!!!
This is so so well put together. So many memories. I have a lot of the 2001 Ocean Run on VHS myself recorded when they were new on the Toonami block on CN UK. A long winded post here but heres what I recall from my own memory. That trail for Friezas Counter Attack I remember airing as they came to the end of that new ep run around October/November 2000. Not long after they began re running from the start of the Funi dubs we had when the Ginu force were attacking Goku on Namek. I found that strange they had made a trail for an episode on series run that was about to end. They didn't really do it for individual episodes like that before I recall. We got the start of the 2nd run of Ocean dubs around March/April 2001 which started with "Goku's Special Technique', whilst the States carried on with Funi as we had before. That run of new episodes actually had a long one, right into Summer 2001 almost. As it got right up to the point where Trunks lost to the recently transformed perfect Cell, and he flew off after announcing the Cell Games. Followed by the jump back to 'Gokus Special Technique'. I remember in August 2001 on CN there was a lot of pr for the Cell Games saga, plus Tenchi in Tokyo I think. There was a trailer (not sure if its recorded anywhere) promoting new episodes of both etc featuring the track 'Turning Japenese' by The Vapours (stuck in my head for 20 years that). There was also a DBZ trail running that had a track from the wrestling (I never watched WWE), it went "Time to play the gaaaame" Deffo 2001 but unsure when about in the year. I believe the Cell Games Saga started airing on Monday 3rd September 2001. Out of interest I tracked what episode was aired on 9/11 in the UK. And it was 'A New Guardian'. I have that recorded on VHS but CN didn't break away from the norm that day with the attacks in America, I guess they wanted to keep things normal for younger viewers unlike a lot of other channels that broke away from the norm to cover it. I think that run was a decent one too for new episodes, it went through that bit with Gohan and Videl getting together, the tournament etc. May have ended with Hercules dog getting snipered right before Good vs Evil Buu, but this is where my memory gets fuzzy. I know CNX came into it but 02-03 felt like one big blurr. Anyway, thought that was worth putting down before more of my brain cells die and 2001 drifts ever further away!
Thank you so much for this! Is there any possibility we can arrange for your VHS tapes to be preserved I can digitise them and share them with everyone and send you the tapes back? If your interested contact me on: dbzimran@gmail.com
@@DBZimran Most of them aren't the best quality tbh. The tapes back in 2001 were at least 10 years old themselves. And I never recorded trailers or breaks, just the episodes to make as much space as possible. I did contribute one or two to a long gone forum called cartoonworld back in 2008. The project wasn't complete when i was sending them some episodes but it seems they did finish the job in the end, and their finished pack ended up on torrent. Quite a lot got HD remastered using the dragon box footage and the ocean soundtrack. I keep the collection in a mega account which is here mega.nz/folder/s4lkTbJS#euRvyRKddkXw0T_z0Cos8w One or two I may have sent could have been replaced with better quality ones. But not all have been able to be redubbed. For example EP 184 - Gohans first date is definatley my Toonami rip untouched, rerun in 2003.
@@DBZimran I'll deffo have a good trawl through that! I may try and dig my tapes out but I really doubt there's anything of use really. I remember going through them intensely in 08 for cartoon world and it was just a case of a few missing episodes I filled in at that time. I know for sure I cut out the ad breaks apart from a couple generic CN ones that slipped the net, and I uploaded them to RUclips on another account many moons ago. I was aged 12 to 13 back then so preserving things for 20 years later wasn't on my mind. Although I never did overwrite episodes I had.
@@lyndonedwards6947 Nice to see someone from Cartoon World. I used to be on there in 2008 after searching for years to find the lost "UK dub" from my memory (of course, I now know better). Those forums were a godsend at the time and I'm forever grateful for everyone who uploaded and shared what they had. It would be lost media otherwise.
It's great to finally have a uk perspective on DBZ. I remember hearing the Dragon Dragon Ball theme for the first time, and although I wouldn't watch the series until Kai, that theme tune stuck with me from that point on
So nostalgic, and here we are so many years later with super airing in the UK on sky channel POP. Still miss toonami but at least there's some anime still airing in the uk
@@RancidKari I still remember watching kai on kix when starting high school in 2013 but i got to when 17 got absorb by cell but at least I didn't miss out on goku vs vegeta fight, the half way of frieza vs goku and seeing goku transformation in a super sayian never forget those days
Yeah, POP also shows Pokemon, too. They started showing the original Indigo League season a while back and I watched them. VICE shows anime over here in England now as well.
Ocean dub is the best, I will admit it took a dive during the android saga but it went straight back to the top during the Buu saga. In Canada we had the Funimation Dub from mid Frieza to the end but then out no where mid Buu Saga we got the Ocean dub Majin Vegeta episodes. It was incredible hearing Brian Drumand again as Vegeta, it felt like he hasn't missed a beat since his old days. No, I will say he sounded even more hardcore. It wasn't until later that I got a sample of the adroid ocean dub, not so great but worth a watch.
"DRAGOBAWZ... IS NOT... FOR WHIMPS!" Wow, I just thought about that advert recently since I saw it back in 2001. I was starting to think I dreamt it. I can't believe that was real.
This explains so much. Thank you! I had started to think I had imagined certain lines and phrases like “Instant Translocation” and calling Mr Satan; Hurcule.
So nostalgic. I'd forgotten how good the voiceover for the ads was. One correction, the Blue Water dub didn't use the Funimation scripts for their Dragon Ball dub. They did their own, carrying over terms that had been established in DBZ dub (Master Roshi, Flying Nimbus) while reverting many of the DB only terms to their Japanese names (Nyoibō, Tao Pai Pai) and translating the "World Martial Arts Tournament" as "The Number One Under The Sun Martial Arts Tournament". They took cues from the Funimation dub when it came to the pronunciation of some terms though.
I'm so glad I've seen this video i was going crazy trying to figure out what the other dubs were I remembered all the voices being different, great video.
I love the Ocean/Westwood dub, despite its flaws and changes. Brian Drummond as Vegeta was so sick, and we got the Westwood OP from the get-go in Canada.
Random aside: I believe Ron Wasserman, who worked on the musical scores for some of Saban's other properties, came forward at some point to claim he did the score for the Ocean Dub, but it ended up credited to Shuki Levy as Wasserman had left the company by that point.
Others have probably already Said; But It was Ron Wasserman that did the Saban Ocean Dub Score. :) Shuki Levy had absolutely Nothing to do with the Show. He and Haim Saban [Using the Pseudonym "Kussa Mahchi"] were only Credited so They could Claim All the Royalties. Wasserman was the Real Genius. Levy and Saban are Greedy Scumbags. I did Speak to Ron Wasserman and He was super awesome enough to Tell Me how He Composed the Soundtrack; So I have been Working on and off on Recreating some Ocean Dub Tracks like "Goku's Arrival", "Goku Trains In Space" and "The Chase" Themes. Thank You so much for this Video. I Remember each Intro from Rock the Dragon to the Funimation Intro to the Westwood Dub Intro and I love each and every One of Them! :) I did kind of like Sabat's Voice Impression of Brian Drummond's Vegeta [Except In Ginyu Assault, That was ghastly]. The Delivery wasn't great but I did like the Tone of the Voice. Had a very "Royal" Sound to It, I suppose. Drummond will always be Vegeta to Me, Though. Along with McNeil as Piccolo, Swaile as Teen Gohan and Henderson as Kid Gohan. And that First Super Saiyan Transformation will always be Etched Into My Memoriy. It was Legendary and All the Kids at School were Talking about It! Not a Day went by without Me and My Friends Discussing Dragon Ball Z! And don't get Me Started on Trunk's Arrival! Gah, Such a good Time! As for the Big Green Dub; I Think the Guy that Voiced Goku was David Gasman; The Voice behind Rayman?
It's too old for pop to air that, Kai wouldn't be bad to air as it dubbed in 2010 but it has already appeared on kix from 2012 to 2016, GT again is too old to air do we only have super
Great video bringing back the memories. I appreciate Falconers Iconic funimation dub,but there some sagas where his score didn't feel right with the action and didn't do the episodes the full justice that many times the Ocean Dub did. If you look for the right places you can find ocean dub versions up to the Cell Games saga, but as far as i know there are no Ocean Dub versions for the Babidi and Kid Buu sagas but if anyone can direct me to those it would be greatly appreciated. For me the best dubs for each sagsa. Saiyan, Namek, Imperfect Cell, Perfect Cell, Cell Games, Kid Buu - Ocean Dub. Ginyu, Freiza, Garlic Jnr, Trunks, Fusion - Funimation
1:33 - Didn't need high-speed internet, in Year 1 we were looking up all the Dragonball Z pictures from home dialup and our class IT rooms in primary school. Found out about Trunks, SSJ2, SSJ3, Majin Buu, Gotenks, Fusion, GT when the Namek saga was still airing.
The reason I heard for the Westwood dub was because of Canadian restrictions on non-Canadian programming and having a dub made in Canada would make it count. But YTV didn't want to air the movies, hence Big Green.
I remember watching this series at a very young age, I mean I was 5 by the time it had finished airing, I’m 19 now. Glad to see another U.K. fan talking about this series. It’s a shame the only official releases of the series we have are the Orange Bricks, Kai and the 30th anniversary disaster. I mean where I work we’ve done an unofficial remaster of Z, because at this point we’re just getting fed up of the lazy ‘restorations’ from Funimation. Kinda wish we could do an official remaster, it pains me.
Your best bet is Malaysian bootlegs of the Dragon Box. They're actually really good now days and half the price of the original. I find it funny that the bootlegs used to be a dumpster fire that people were tricked into buying, and now they are an actual way of watching the show that is sought out because the official releases are so bad. Hilarious.
I bet I'm not the only one that spent half of their younger school days not paying attention and instead trying to draw DBZ style people in their work books?😄 I remember making a stick figure DBZ animation in highschool for a ICT thing, was pretty good, wish I could see it again. It's the vegeta voice change that really bothered me, the only one I seriously noticed as a kid and even more now. I like both of the Goku voices. But vegeta being my favourite character, I never thought sabat suited the earlier version of vegeta, it was especially disappointing when I bought all the boxsets the other year and had to watch the 9000 scene and stuff with the funi voices, questioning reality as to why this wasnt how I remembered it🙈 Post cell games, the funi voices or ocean are both as good for me. Just the early days with rock the dragon and such, ocean can never be replaced!
So now I know the "Big Green" (Nail) reference in DBZ Abridged. Lol! Also, this is an awesome perspective of how another English Speaking Country experienced watching DBZ. Obviously for most of us in the US we watched the Original Ocean Dub and even before that they dubbed the first 12 Episodes of Dragon Ball before they switched to DBZ instead. I didn't have a problem with the transition into the Funimation Dub. We were just happy that we got to see new Episodes! Still Bruce Falconer's score was beautiful to my ears. They also showed all the Movies & Specials as well. They then Premiered Dragon Ball before the start of the Great Sayianman Saga and later play it alongside with DBZ. So when One is showing reruns, the other was showing new episodes. Once those ended we got GT and that's that until Kai Premiered on Nickelodeon of all places. They even showed the Movies and GT on there as well.
This gives me so much nostalgia. In my opinion, we got the best version of Dragonball. Have you heard our GT opening? It's beautiful 😭 I won't mention our version of Z's opening... For years I thought that was fake. And I had made it up in my head, but when I asked my brother he'd sing it too. Could never find it though.
I saw that the uploader of this video uploaded his stash of UK Dragon Ball crap to Nyaa and I just wanna say thank you for finally giving the Internet decent copies of the uk dragon ball dubs and I hope you find the fabled Episode 72 of Blue Water Dragon Ball
Episode 72 is found, you probably meant episode 71. I have a torrent full of UK DB the uploader gave to me with that episode in there, but unfortunately it's incomplete.
I'll never forget when the voices changed, while they were fighting The Ginyu Force. I still prefer the Ocean Dub for the Saiyan saga, but that is probably my nostalgia kicking in, after getting use to the Funi voices, they owned the rest. I was really shocked they went back to the Ocean voices, for when Vegeta turned Super in the Android saga.
Man I thought I was going crazy. I distinctly remembered watching DBZ as a kid and they were calling Piccolo "Big Green". Good to know 20 years later that I wasn't crazy.
Thanks for this, its funny a few years back I was looking for a nostalgia trip. I soon realised what a mess the dubs were when all the intros were different from the ones I remembered this video really clears it all up.
Aha I'm so glad there's a video of this. I have my recollections of when we'd have a gap in episodes for a bit, then suddenly there'd be a new saga released and everyone had new voices! There's no "true" dub of DBZ for me as it kept changing, I don't mind the Funimation guys on the new movies etc but it never feels "right" when I try and watch the original sagas. I remember watching the initial one hour specials on Cartoon Network and just losing my mind each time though, the other episodic cartoons we'd had prior to this all had a "monster of the week" format, DBZ ramped everything up so much by comparison. This is also my first time seeing Blue Water DBGT footage in forever, the music is like something from a JRPG on the PS1, pretty cool. I love all of the Cartoon Network promos too
35:31 - It was requested by the broadcasters, no? This is the biggest mystery of all. Someone at Cartoon Network will know the full truth and surely they must have high quality media archived?
Goddamn my RUclips recommendations. Doesn’t notify me about the videos that matter like this but instead give me stuff from like 10 years ago hahaha. Anyways bro what a fab video. 10/10 love it.
This is a great video. Though I remember when they aired the super buu parts (fusion saga), it was the Funimation dub first as I remember Vegito having the dual voice like Gotenks which i thought was so cool (I even have those episodes on VHS I recorded off TV). They went back to the Westwood dub after the episode "Mind Trap" as I was disappointed with the voices. They then re-aired the previous episodes with the Westwood Dub as I remember being like wtf with Vegito's voice. Man this is a great nostalgia trip though 👍.
Can you email me on Dbzimran@gmail.com I would love to digitise these tapes of the Funimation dub fusion saga airing on UK TV it was never preserved. Please can you email me and arrange a way to preserve this rare footage
Wow these tv promos really bring back memories!! I'm impressed you found a whole archive of this. I do have the all the original dubs and episodes on my old hard drive. I would upload them but they always get taken down
This was super well done. Also is the audio from 54-107 the same as the broadcast audio on the orange bricks? Or is that only on the single DVDs? Or was it ever even released?
It was released on the singles only. But the Funimation singles only have the Recap and Next epsiode preview for the first and last episode on the release.
As crazy as these times were, I wish I was able to be a part of it. I am from the uk, I was just not born in that time, thank GOD I was able to watch dbz kai on Kix tho.
Extremely interesting stuff! I watched DBZ obsessively in the UK when I was younger, I remember all of the adverts and stuff! However, the bit in the cell saga where he drinks some poor dude traumatised little me and I stopped watching and literally never tuned into it again until years later when I watched it on RUclips of all things! Really cool to hear all the old voices again!!
"You wont escape my wrath" Was the peak of the ocean dub

I agree with your sentiment that the Cell Saga should have been the end of DBZ. The Buu Saga felt very tacked-on. Honestly felt more like GT than Z.

That Imperfect Cell Saga promo was really something. I would love to learn more about the creation of that and the others someday.
Same here, sadly we may never know about the story behind it.

It was the same in the states!!! They would play one episode every Sunday morning!!!
"Has Goku finally become a Super Saiyan?" or whatever haunted me.
The frustration! I felt like I had watched the Namek Saga more times than all episodes in the DBZ back then! 😫
Growing up on “rock the dragon” and “dragon-dragon-ball” changes a man.

Brilliant! you certainly done you research.
I love funimation dub, but I'm so glad ocean Westwood dub exists as well. I like them both.
Big green dead?
Kinda racist if you ask me?
Great Video. This took me back to the best times.

While the 2nd was really common playing anytime

I have been searching high and low for the Gohan SS2 tranformation we had in the UK. Still can't find it RUclips lol
This video brings back memories, even channels featuring Dragonball content was never stable.
I have them from tapes that I got from a fan.
Damn. You’re so lucky! 👌

You hit me with major nostalgia. Thank you, I remember thinking I’d always seen the FUNimation dub. And the adverts brought me back to the school days
Yep I'd assume they would have been dubbed around then and shown later in the UK
I did the exact same thing with super saiyan 4 haha in primary school
Omg yes we use to do that in primary school aswell. People use to print dbz images from google images and then we use to trade them with other people in school.
Lol true, I thought ssj3 goku were an different person and ssj4 goku as resurrected raditz because of tail also I thought adult gohan as goku's new best friend lol
I really love the Kikuchi Score but the Westwood Dubs soundtrack is pretty dope as well.
Also I would have never guessed that the big green dub is from an english speaking country. Really great video, thanks for the effort.
What gets me about rewatching this video, I'd forgot you included the trailers. The nostalgia I have for those trailers alone. Perfection.
I remember seeing a super saiyan 3 toy at a store as a kid before while the original super saiyan was still fresh in the U.S.
I ended up coming to the conclusion that Raditz would be wished back and become a super saiyan.
yea, makes sense
and maybe Nappa is the smartest Super Saiyan, because if he were to become super saiyan 1,2, or 3 no one would be able to tell which one
How can it be a "sin"? It describes the process well enough.

One or two I may have sent could have been replaced with better quality ones.

He was definitely called Hercule in some dubs!
Really hope some of the Big Green cast will come out of the woodwork someday and tell their story of how the dub was made.
They did. Look up the dragonball wiki for ABGroupe
I love the Ocean/Westwood dub, despite its flaws and changes. Brian Drummond as Vegeta was so sick, and we got the Westwood OP from the get-go in Canada.
Those imperfect cell saga ads are actually way too good - a little goofy but so eerie - brilliant!
Random aside: I believe Ron Wasserman, who worked on the musical scores for some of Saban's other properties, came forward at some point to claim he did the score for the Ocean Dub, but it ended up credited to Shuki Levy as Wasserman had left the company by that point.
Thanks so much for documenting this. Not much of early anime community’s get talked about in the uk.

I did kind of like Sabat's Voice Impression of Brian Drummond's Vegeta [Except In Ginyu Assault, That was ghastly].
Excellent video! Also I about died when I heard the big green dub of Broly groaning!
I do live in the UK but I wasn't born during the time DBZ was getting popular! But I do watch it these days dubbed ! Liked the video!
You have brought back so many forgotten memories.
I totally forgot the Westwood intro existed until you played it.
Same
I like to think the Big Green dub was made by a group old guys who dubbed Anime in between their games of Bridge
I'm glad Pop still airs Dragon Ball. I'm glad the UK still gets some Dragon Ball content.
Pop should air Dragon Ball Z Ocean Dub from the Saiyan Saga-Ginyu Saga
It's too old for pop to air that, Kai wouldn't be bad to air as it dubbed in 2010 but it has already appeared on kix from 2012 to 2016, GT again is too old to air do we only have super
Big green dub when vegeta powers up and they think its kamahamaha gets me everytime.
The Big Green dub isn’t as bad as the Malaysian Speedy dub
SAYA PEEPO
Fr
Oh boy the speedy dub, what a beautiful thing that was
If I don't eat rice, the power won't come.
Omg ikr? “Wha kinda stah is da new namek stah?”
“Deedint you leauhrn it in skoo Gohan?”
All these years later and rock of the dragon still gets me so amped up!
There is ocean dub versions for the babidi and kid buu Sagas. I call then Westwood dub but it is pretty much the ocean dub.
@@DBZimran Thank you, do you know where the Ocean / Westwood versions can be found for the likes of the Babidi & Kid Buu Sagas?
1:33 - Didn't need high-speed internet, in Year 1 we were looking up all the Dragonball Z pictures from home dialup and our class IT rooms in primary school. Found out about Trunks, SSJ2, SSJ3, Majin Buu, Gotenks, Fusion, GT when the Namek saga was still airing.
In my opinion the ocean and Westwood dubs are my favourite and the most memorable to me at Least
Where did you get the episodes from. I'm struggling to find them in 4:3 online nevermind on a physical release.
Hilarious.
Funimation US has them and that's all I'll say lol.
It makes me happy to think that dragon ball super is now on pop in the uk! Dragon Ball finally has a new home on UK TV!!
Really??? Is it still on and what times?
5pm to 7pm timings in the evening when I last checked. Go on POP and see the TV guide.
@@DBZimran Thank you brother
It's true I'm still watching the show on there to this day
Yup and in 2012 dragon ball z kai was on kix and man is nostalgic!
Wow! This dude is so good that I thought I was actually watching the show while eating dinner. Props to you my man!
I bet I'm not the only one that spent half of their younger school days not paying attention and instead trying to draw DBZ style people in their work books?😄
I remember making a stick figure DBZ animation in highschool for a ICT thing, was pretty good, wish I could see it again.
It's beautiful 😭
I won't mention our version of Z's opening... For years I thought that was fake. And I had made it up in my head, but when I asked my brother he'd sing it too. Could never find it though.
That music in the android and cell saga is trash though....
@@mathiaskanuck6759 Mega Man Ruby Spears soundtrack is NOT trash. I honestly prefer it over the Falconer score.
So cool to relive this as someone who lives in the netherlands and grew up with these dubs, including BIG GREEN
This is all just nostalgic, this is how I first watched it all back in the day. Glad to find a video of someone talking about it.
"Special Beam Cannon... FIRE!!"
That sounded pretty cool, actually!
I love all of the Cartoon Network promos too
Trunks original voice was so badass "Ah, you must be frieza"
The promo at 30:09 uses the Funimation dub if you weren't already aware

RIP Kix. Best channel ever. I found Digimon, Dragon Ball and Batman Beyond thanks to them.
Same here!
