I know I’m late to the party, but the biggest reason people have talked smack about the Hobbit movies is because the took one book and made it into 3 movies. Introduced characters and storylines that were not in the original story. Also there is important information about the story that can only be found in the extended edition versions. I would have liked it if they had only done two movies as in the hobbit part 1 and part 2, they could have been more true to the book in that way whilst giving people perspective of the white council story which is only briefly mentioned in the book. Sorry for the long post, trying not to spoil anything for first timers. Keep up the good work

The reason why some of the orcs look so different compared to the orcs from Lord of the rings is just that there are different races of orcs. Smaller mountain orcs, eastern orcs, northern orcs, battle orcs from Mordor, black orcs...

@@Gnossiene369 From an aesthetic point of view, the CGI is not bad. However, it is very much overutilized, to the point where it distracts the viewer from the movie, and you feel like you're playing a video game instead. LOTR used a lot more practical effects, such as makeup, miniatures, costumes, actual sets, etc. CG was only used when it needed to be, and so the end result is a film that's very immersive and believable simply because so much of it is actually real.

There are 4 things to be said about the hobbit movies, in their defence
    1) Comparing it to LOTR is not really fair, because LOTR are one of the, if perhaps not the, greatest story ever told. It is a true master piece, and impossible to make a sequal or prequal which would be as good. Not to mention that the movies themselvs are just brilliantly made. The LOTR movies are so well done, just as movies, that you can't expect every movie to be at their level.
    2) The hobbit movies are probably the best fantasy movies we have, next to the LOTR, and by themselves very good movies. To say they are bad, is like saying a Rembrandt portrait is bad next to a photografy. Okay, maybe not a good comparison, but you get what i mean.
    3) Many completely overlooks, that the Hobbit book, and the LOTR, are not writting in the same tone. There are several differences between them. Most notably, the hobbit reads as a adventure, it's lighter in tone and has less heavy themes. It is more fun and it stand very much on its own. Some characters are also a little different. For instance, Gandalf is much more happy to use magic in the hobbit, than in the LOTR. With this difference in mind, I do think that Peter Jackson has captured the spirit of the hobbit books, pretty well in the movie. The hobbit movies are perhaps not perfectly alligned with the LOTR movies in its tone and feel, but it is pretty well alligned with the hobbit books.
    4) Peter Jackson had a lot less time, and more studie interference with the hobbit movies, and when you look behind the scenes, it is pretty amazing how well these movies ended up. It could have gone far worse that it did.
So to all the haters of the hobbit movies. No, they are not as great as the LOTR. That is an insane standard to have for movies. But they are faithful in spirit to the hobbit book, and they are good fantasy movies on their own. Stop being salty.

For my entire childhood, the only adaptation was the Rankin/Bass cartoon. I've got a lot of nostalgia for it, but it left out some of my favorite parts. Peter Jackson included my favorite parts *and* a lot of details from the rest of Tolkien's legendarium. I think he and the rest of the crew did a fantastic job.

I enjoy the Hobbit films. People compare The Hobbit to the Lord of The Rings which will always end in disappointment. They had production issues and PJ came in at the last minute I believe. They added lots of filler which didn't happen in the book, which is why it gets a bad rep. But what many people don't think about is that they need to ad things that weren't told in the book. Yes, Tauriel isn't needend. But the book tells only Bilbos point of view and people would be mad if we wouldn't know why the orcs wan't the Erebor and Gandalfs storyline was important too. I mean you can't show Gandalf leaving the Dwarves and not telling what caused him to leave. And people complain because battle of the fives armies shows a long battle, which was only a few pages in the book but the battle needed to be long in the movies, because of Thorins story. In the book Bilbo is unconscious and comes in the right moment to say Thorin goodbye. If they hadn't added things, there would be a lot of questions unanswered.

If i recall, he take Gandalf, talk briefly and then saves all the others with his eagels followers.
Meaning Gandalf do not call the eagles for help.

Peter Jackson got the rights to this series very late after other producers dropped out. Consequently, there was a very abbreviated timeline for him to work with for this production, much shorter than he had with LOTR. I think this explains some of the character development (or lack thereof) and perhaps excessive use of CGI. Personally, I'm pretty forgiving of any defects in either cinematography or character development. There are definitely some deviations in the script relative to the original work of J.R.R. but I don't find them substantive. Overall I was very pleased with the result and it certainly provides a very good backstory to LOTR. Keep up the great commentary!

    • @brigidtheirish

Yes. It's a lot faster to CGI an army of orcs than to find an army of extras, get them in prosthetics and make up every morning, and shoot several dozen takes with them. As someone who grew up with the books long before the movies came out, I'm a big fan of *both* trilogies.

One of the reasons Thorin's grandfather became so obsessed with the treasure horde was that he was in possession of the greatest of the 7 rings of power that were given to Dwarf Lords. While the 9 rings of power for men turned them into the ring-wraiths, the Nazgul, the rings of power given to dwarves did not have the same wraith creating effect on them. This is because dwarves are of a hardier nature than men, and more resistant to corruption as a result, but they weren't completely immune to their ring's influence. Instead of making them into wraiths, their rings of power amplified the dwarf lord's greed and obsession with wealth, while also empowering them to accrue even greater treasure hordes to satisfy their greed. Which ended up attracting dragons to several dwarven kingdoms, such as Erabor, who stole the treasure hordes of the dwarven lords and either claimed or destroyed their rings of power. Making it so in the end Sauron was only able to reclaim 3 of the seven dwarven rings he had distributed. However, Sauron did not distribute the ring Thror had in particular. He inherited it from his family line leading back to Thrain III, who had been given it by Celebrimbor, the elven lord who Sauron taught, tricked, and worked with to create 16 of the 20 rings of power before making the 20th master ring by himself: the one ring. Meanwhile Celebrimbor made the 17th through 19th rings of power by himself using the knowledge he had learned from Sauron, the three elven rings, which were different from the other 16, and the one ring, in that they were never touched or tainted by Sauron during their crafting, they were pure. That is why those who wielded the three elven rings experienced no corrupting effects from their rings at all, unlike dwarves and men.

Though they couldn't wield them while Sauron held the one ring, because despite not being partially crafted and tainted by Sauron, they were still made using the knowledge he gave to the elves and thus susceptible to the binding power of the one ring that Sauron designed around said knowledge of ring-making to be the master of the other rings of power, and by extension those who wielded them. Meaning Sauron would be able to corrupt and control the elven ring's wielder's even if the elven rings themselves were not corrupting in nature.

Loved the book as a child and still love it now as an adult. This was the first book published by Tolkein after his other book the Silmarillion was rejected for being too "Celtic" and "confusing" and a fun fact with the film was the Director of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Guillermo del Toro was initially going to direct the project but dropped out due to financial reasons and delaying the film which lead to Peter Jacksons return to direct it. a very sad not so fun fact will come later when you watch the 3rd movie.

People make some valid criticisms of these movies. Turning one short book into three movies means they are a bit stretched out, they used too much CGI, some additions to the story that Peter Jackson made were not necessary, etc. (A lot of this wasn't completely his fault, and he did the best with what he was given)
But, even though they aren't as good as LOTR, they are still great movies and I love them very much! They have some fantastic battle scenes, emotional moments, great scenery, cool characters, a freaking DRAGON, and more. That's all I can ask for in a fantasy movie.

    • @mattjustice9372

That's also why JRR Tolkien son found this movie the most interesting. Peter Jackson had less source material to go off of

  • @kampinak

the main problem here is people cant look at these films and just appreciate them for what they are, they just have to compare them to every little detail with LOTR which is silly since you cannot expect this to be on that level, The Hobbit is a small children book that was written before LOTR, its simply done differently, I think the movies did really well with adapting it, the only issue is 3 movies is a bit too much since there just isnt enough content in the book for it, therefore they needed to come up with ways to stretch it which is what ultimate hurts this trilogy, 2 movies would have been perfect but with the way the industry works they were never gonna just make 2 movies especially since LOTR was also a trilogy, so thats a bit of a shame but still overall these movies are really nice and enjoyable :)

I love The Hobbit movies for what they are, but for those of us who have read the books you really have to see these movies as "based on" rather than being a full adaptation. There are plenty of quotes from the Tolkein novel e.g. the good morning sequence with Bilbo and Gandalf at the start but as some of the other comments have said, they added a lot of filler. Honestly for the most part it was good, like the whole necromancer storyline gets a mention in the books but nothing more comes of it, whereas in the movies they fully flesh it out. I think what disappointed me most were the differences in what happens inside the mountain with Smaug from the book to the film. It's hugely different, even though they do take some of the book dialogue (and Benedict Cumberbatch NAILS his Smaug performance). Also the battle of the five armies is so much smaller in comparison in the books, whereas they dedicate nearly an entire movie to it.
Like I said, the movies are fantastic and fun and I feel they capture the essence of the book but they really did play around with a lot of the story and so more purist fans who were expecting the kind of adaptation that happened with LotR were let down.

When I watched this movie in the cinema I cried my eyes out just from pure nostalgia lol! I didn't care about the story or anything other than "we got another film from Tolkien universe after all these years!!" Because we often compare these to LOTR and it's obvious they're not even close as good but they're not from the worst end either. They're still a fun watch and I'm happy you gave them a chance!

I know a lot of people prefer Lord of the Rings over The Hobbit, but I think The Hobbit films were particularly important to me because I got to have the cinematic experience I never did with LOTR (being a year old when they came out). I do think the movies are quite stretched out & there's a lot I wish they would've done differently, but having to wait a year between each film definitely gave time for the hype to build up!!
