The Colts came that close to being just the second 9-7 team to reach the Super Bowl. There have been 3 such teams as of the end of the 2020 season. The 1979 Rams and 2008 Cardinals both got to the Super Bowl but only the 2011 Giants have ever won it all with fewer than 10 wins in a 16 game season. Those Giants are also the only team to win the Super Bowl despite having a negative point differential during the regular season. Both the 2007 and 2011 Giants are in the mix for the worst team to win the Super Bowl, but they did it twice with a lot of the same players. They were great at pulling out tight games under pressure which leads me to believe they had a strong faith and trust in each other.

Whats really amazing is both those 9-7 teams (79 Rams & 08 Cards)--guess who they played in the Super Bowl? Yup, the Pittsburgh Steelers....and of course this 9-7 team obviously played Pitt...I am a lifelong Steelers fan and just being honest but it took somewhat miraculous efforts to beat those 9-7 teams...every darn one of them...Pretty crazy when you break it down.....ALL were GREAT n I mean GREAT games!!!!!!!

Three plays...4:34, Willie Williams with a spectacular tackle on Lamont Warren that would've kept the time ticking and forced Pittsburgh to burn timeouts. 4:46...Quentin Coryatt with the sure game ending INT, and can't hang on. And of course, 6:46...Aaron Bailey, SO CLOSE to the Hail Mary to end all Hail Mary's. BTW...would Ernie Mills' catch have been good under the rules of recent years?

Plus, he wasn't out of bounds when he caught it he just had stepped out and came back in but the ref missed it. At least Pittsburgh had the defense to slow Emmit to 49 yds, Aikman to 209 and Irvin to 76 in the SB XXX and make it a game. Colts would have been blown out by halftime

Between the phantom touchdown, the Willie Williams shoestring tackle, the Coryatt near-interception, the near sack on that 4th and 3, AND the Hail Mary that Bailey would've had if he'd just moved his arms like an inch after the ball got in his lap... the Colts got as close as you can get to winning a game without actually winning.

Dallas would lose in the second round the very next year to Carolina. I'm a Dallas fan, but I've always wandered why that Cowboys team is never thought of as a biggest one-year drop off of all time. Age, I guess. But wouldn't Troy and Emmitt both go on to play 4 or 5 more years?

Nick Phillips Few factors. After Super Bowl 28, Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones got into a dispute on control of the team, and Jerry mouth wanted more say,and Jimmy left to be on the NFL on FOX in 1994, and hired Barry Swizter in the March of 1994 and Cowboys players and fans wasn't happy that Jimmy left, and it wasn't the same they made it back to the Championship game in 1994 with the 49ers for the 3rd time and got dethroned, then lost of lot of key free agents like Alvin Harper who went to Tampa bay and Ken Norton Jr ( left in 1993) to be on the 49ers and others, In 1995, controversy on and off field became a tailspin and even they captured their 3rd title in Super Bowl in 4 seasons they wasn't strong as early on,In 1996 they woke up with a hungover with Irvin being suspended 4 games, Leon Lett getting suspended again for the 2nd time later in the Season and didn't play in 1997, and the sexual assault case involving Erik Williams and Irvin the same week they were going to play Carolina and in 95,96 remember watching football and being very old school they started to struggle ( EX: 1995 2nd meeting between the Redskins, losing twice to them, going into Philadelphia in one of major upsets of 95 of the " 4th Down and Dumb game and barely getting past the Giants) In 1996, Week 1 they got destroyed by the bears on Monday Night Football, they survived a scare with the Falcons in Dallas, lose in the final seconds with the Eagles in Week 10, they rallied late to squeak in, and thanks to the Redskins 7-2 collapse, beat the Vikings and got their card pulled in Charlotte territory of a very dangerous Carolina Panthers team and being undefeated at Erriscon Stadium, in 1997 the damage had been done you can tell in preseason when they played the Rams at Texas Stadium, Troy Aikman was frustrated at Barry and everybody and after the Packers blowout in Green Bay, the loss on Thanksgiving with the Tennessee Oilers and they cashed in their chips and it wasn't fun anymore, the good times were ending Espically in the finale with Michael Irvin crying on the sidelines at the end of the Giants game and going 6-10,in Dallas the party's over.
