    The song is about society being the child and government being the abusive mother and the child having enough. Awesome song.
    Way different from the sound of silence, but more of their norm lol.

      harkens to Rage Against the Machine and pretty much all good metal bands have at least one politically poignant song that goes beyond the topics of the time to timeless topics.

      Totally, though it's more about how society (the abusive mother) treats the outsiders in society especially people with social and mental issues, and the backlash there after (the lyrics were partly inspired by a school shooting by a "loner").

    When I first heard this song, I cried. I had suffered with PTSD from my mother abusing me as a child. I remember clearly the first time I hit her back, I was 15. I was called names, told she regretted having me, smacked on the head, locked in a room, beaten with belts or fists...she had been addicted to Valium and ‘hated’ motherhood. My dad was complacent, ignored her and us kids. My sister is screwed up in the head, still to this day. She went down a dark road. I, on the other hand, walked away, and went to church, read the Bible. For years I had nightmares and daymeres if I took a nap. When I had kids, I broke the chain...attended parenting classes and read over 20 parenting books. I blindly followed Christian protocol as to not repeat the pattern. I’m ok now. This song is about PTSD of adults who were abused as children. It’s a real thing!

    A lot of rock music, most hard rock and almost all metal particularly: is therapy in the form of exorcising one's own demons.
    I don't expect anyone but metal heads to understand that a head of time, so if you're unaccustomed to this genre: with anything you hear from it - keep that foundational principle in mind and suddenly it all makes a hell of a lot more sense.

      Undoubtedly - but - [point] This was a metal video... I was making a comment, on a video, explaining metal, to a non-metal head, who was reacting to a metal video. That's why my comment was about metal. Punk has been around just as long as metal, in fact both originated in England around the same music scene among the same bands which drifted apart creating the two genres. None of which matters - because I was explaining metal, to a non-metal head, on a video, where the non-metal head: was reacting to metal.
      Had he been reacting Punk: I'd have been talking about Punk.
      BTW, Ice T from Body Count did a tribute to Institutionalized, it got the humor just right - no pepsi though... I was disappointed... still worth seeing if you haven't seen it yet.

    This is about how society treats people who are "different." A lot of people think they are "sick" and "wrong" and want nothing to do with them.
    In the middle of the song, lead singer David Draiman acts out a skit where he is being abused by his mother (not in the radio version). Finally, he builds up enough courage and hits her right back. This is used to symbolize how "mother society" abuses "her" children for not being the way "she" thinks they should. "She" keeps doing it until "her" children get sick of it and are so angry with her and themselves they go out and get revenge for it, most likely by killing the people that hurt them ("here it comes, get ready to die!")

    Gotta say, I love how you start jamming as soon as a song starts up. You really have a heart open to music.
    ETA: So this song came out and became a hit when I was in middle school, well over a decade ago. *I* was shocked hearing "Sound of Silence" because it was so...ballady, compared to their usual style. That's when researched revealed that he had in fact been trained as a cantor growing up. Jewish worship background iirc.
    Recommending their song "Stricken". Similar vibe and style, no crazy-angry skit. Great imagery in the song.

    • @heather9857
      @heather9857 4 года назад +2

      @@alenemarie It's important to understand that although abusers are most likely to have been abused themselves, those have been abused are not more likely to abuse. To quote a psychological study "The belief that abused children are likely to become abusive parents.......... is unqualified and acceptance is unfounded." Mental health disorders, social issues, anxiety, drug addiction/self medicating etc. are certainly concerns someone who has suffered with abuse may have to overcome. It's important to understand this difference and not lump those that have been abused with those that are abusers.

    • @alenemarie
      @alenemarie 4 года назад +1

      Palau Maestro I understand what you are saying. I myself was abused and because of my abuse, I became the mother I always wanted. I broke that chain of abuse. Was I perfect? No. I suffer from severe depression and anxiety to this day.
      I don’t believe I said that all abused people become abusers. They do, however, have a much higher risk of becoming an abuser themselves. The song is about an abused person who finally lets out all of his anger, frustration towards his abusive mother. The evil implanted into him by the abuse comes out. It’s a metal song, so it’s “heavy” sounding. I relate to the anger, actually, but would never do this. It’s done for me in this song: it’s a release of my anger.

      Why? To bend to the 'will of the people' and ignore the hard realities to just sell records. 'Sound of Silence' was directly a result of this type of self-censorship imposed by society and the record industry. The 'sickness' is not dealing with it. Ignoring dealing with hate....the sickness.

    I actually met David Draiman outside a tiny little club way back when Down with the Sickness first came out. I was just turned 18 and it was the first 18 and up show I had ever been to. The club owners had separated the line out by age and was only letting the 21+ crowd in. David came out and talked to us for a bit while we were waiting to get in, and eventually asked what we were in line for. Dude got pretty hot and sorted it out right there. It was a small very small club and the line was backed up around the block, and we had been there first and waiting for a while. After a quick word to the bouncer we were walking inside right as the venue was reaching capacity. During the show for like two whole songs he took his mic outside and played to the crowd that didn't get as lucky. Later we butted heads in the mosh pit, I jumped up near the stage as he was swinging his head down. Staggered me, he didn't miss a beat.
    It's not really my style of music anymore, but Mr Draiman is and always has been a class act. Top notch performer. So cool to see someone reaction for the first time to this crazy song all these years later.

    Dude even in the world of heavy metal music, the people are still musicians. The singer still sings even if it's not the same style. The guitarist plays distorted instead of clean. The drummer plays slow instead of fast. There are so many ballads out there made by metal bands that honestly sound so good and i love being able to have mellow as well as hard songs from my favorite bands.

What he's singing about is the horrors children go through, not just getting spanked. Some of the songs just leave you reeling from grief for what people go through.
