    I think these types of rides are my favourite and considering the length of the cycles they are better value for money than rollercoasters (whilst also causing less sinus issues from wind blasting up the nose), especially the ones with spinning gondolas.

  • @A7x_Forever
    @A7x_Forever 4 года назад +5

    The Monster III can actually be a thrilling ride experience if you know how! As Alex already mentioned at the end of the Break Dance video, you can shift your weight in such a way that the gondolas spins and never stops. To do this, sit to the right of the gondola. Ideally, you'd have the gondola for yourself. Try to keep a steady rhythm and as the eccentric goes up and down, "throw" your body into the right-hand side of the gondola. The idea is to push/pull it over a certain degree of movement, at which point the momentum does the rest of the job. It's kinda hard to explain. You just gotta find your own rhythm when trying it out.

    • @SchwarzkopfFanboy
      @SchwarzkopfFanboy 4 года назад

      This is exactly what makes them so insanely fun. You can have a relax ride, but you can also have an insane ride where you just have non stop spinning, man it's so good, I really miss it

      @@SchwarzkopfFanboy Fun fact: There is no flat ride that actually makes me dizzy. With the exception of a Monster III when I shift my weight. The last time I did it, I was literally spinning almost from beginning to end, and even when the ride was stopped, I was still going for a couple of seconds. Afterward, I was dizzy for about 10 seconds or so lol. As you said; it can be insane!

Lauwers that was operating, but the man gave an impressive show with some very good music! He also let the machine go maximum speed for a longer time than usual! Monster was the first ride in as ever trained on in 1997 during my park years. Ours was all manual and a pain to operate. It liked to drift due to weight distribution. We also had an Octopus with 2 gondolas per arm. Not sure if that was a modification. Octopus was stamped on the plate.

    When I worked at Joyland in Wichita in the late ‘60s, I often ran an original Octopus as well as a Rock-O-Plane. The controls were very definitely manual. Two levers, one for the sweeps (arms), and one for the crank. They were combination clutch/brake controls. The Rock-O-Plane used an identical control, but only one. They probably used some of the same parts, just as the Eli Ferris wheels and Scramblers used an almost identical operator control. I ran those, too, everything in the park really, as I was often the relief operator. My favorites? The 16 seat Eli wheel, and the very first C.P.Huntington train.

    I must've been around 3 when i saw one of them from a Ferris wheel. The lights fascinated me and i really wanted to ride it. I believe it was Monster 3. My dad took me onto the ride and our car had a hole, which in hindsight was most likely not a safety concern, but i was so young i didn't know that yet. The restraints didn't really hold me tight enough and my dad was clutching me the whole time so i wouldn't move around too much. There are variants of the Octopus that have two seats at the end of each arm. Also there's a rare Spider that has eight arms. The Octopus, Spider, and Monster are manually controlled. At least the ones by Eyerly. Conklin Shows used to have one that they toured with and Canada's Wonderland also had one. Throw one of the throttles part way and just the arms move counter clockwise. Throw it all the way and the arms and the crosses move. Throw the second arm and the eccentric moves clockwise. Pulling the throttles will make the arms move clockwise and the eccentric counter clockwise. Not sure on the crosses.

    The Last build A. Schwarzkopf Monster 3 is not in the video at the mentioned moment. That one is one of the two that where later modified to 4 gondolas per arm.
    It was build in 1984, modified in 2006. I rode it in both configurations. It was modified to make it easier to maintain, the ride experience is not much different.
    The last build is the Power Polyp in the Netherlands it is in the video at 16.25, after the parkour/sound factory story..
    After Stein had gone bankrupt, the first owner build the rest of it themselves with help of some dutch company's.

    I have written those articles about polyp/schwarzkopf myself.

    I rode the one at Six Flags Great America and it been fully rehabbed as it only tilted in one direction (like a spider ride) but it now rotates properly. They moved it to the west side of the park so a new flat ride can be installed in its spot as a new roller coaster needed the back side of its plot (where the queue wrapped around the ride to the "station" for loading.) It was gone for a year for the rehab but it has all new parts, lights, and MANUAL CONTROLS for the ride ops. It is the last ride at the park where the operator can "fake" the riders in thinking the cycle is over, in what I call a "fakey" which is normally happens in carnivals (fairs) when the ops had to keep the rides running so people would know that they were open for business.

    Nice Video, but what about the monster by Bakker (NL) it is also really common in Europe. These sombrero rides have Bakker style eccentric mechanism. Bakker eccenter is static height and only rotates and the arms get pulled to it via hydraulic. At Schwarzkopf the arms are connected to the eccenter via solid rods. When the eccenter rises the arms also gets pulled up.

    When I was a small kid in the late 80s, my dad was a lieutenant firefighter. A carnival came through our small town and my dad went to the site to monitor some safety things as they were setting up. I went with him and I got to watch them set up the rides, and test them. I saw the octopus ride fall off of its center axis.(?) Obviously I don’t remember the total specifics because I was 4.. but I remember the sound of it... it began my fascination with rides but I have actually never ridden any real rides outside of a carousel as well because of that.

    Ah, the Monster ride. Such a classic. I'm not sure why but it reminds me of the Scrambler ride.
    Edit: Looking up the Wikipedia for Valleyfair, it's cool to find out that it's an Eyerly. As far as I know, it has not been modified to allow for better loading and uploading. Also the Sound Factory looks relatively familiar with the strange DJ Bucket, so that might be something that has been at my state fair, but I'm not sure.

    • @harumochizuki
      @harumochizuki 5 месяцев назад +1

      I think it’s because, free-spinning cars aside, it has the same horizontal controlled motions as the Scrambler (main arms spin one direction, stars/crosses at the ends spin the opposite direction).
      Also if you’ve seen the Sound Factory in person, I am very, *very* jealous.
