There's some interesting footage of the Canary Wharf area and the DLR under construction at 36 mins 20 secs and at 1 hour 14 mins 4 secs on this film which was released in 1991 but I guess was filmed a year or two earlier: ruclips.net/video/JQRvxSQ4hKM/видео.html

Is it possible to spot Canary Wharf being constructed on this video? I know it was finished by the summer of 1990.

Hi Andy, you can see the cranes constructing Canary Wharf at the Dockmaster's House around 3.06 but the development was lower than the surrounding dock walls and what's now the Docklands Museum at this time.

Thanks Con. I'm fascinated by this period of time, when the Docklands area was being re-built. I feel a bit stupid because I used to visit London quite a lot with my family in the late 1980s and 1990s (with my parents) but it never occurred to any of us to have a ride on the Docklands Light Railway because it sounded so industrial, but in fact I think we would have absolutely loved it if we had ridden on it, and we would have been fascinated by the views you get of the area from the elevated railway. It wasn't until about 2002 or 2003 that I first used the DLR when I was about 25 and visiting London by myself, but by then most of the interesting stuff had already happened I think, in terms of viewing the construction. It's a pity the DLR didn't advertise a bit more to get visitors to London to use the service. Perhaps they didn't want too many tourists/visitors in the area to begin with when the capacity wasn't very large. I also wish we'd known that the public could go to the top of Canary Wharf in 1991 and 1992 at weekends. Did you ever do that? Apparently they stopped it after a bomb attempt at the end of 1992.

You're welcome Andy. There are some great shots of the construction from the early days of the DLR. Drop me a line on con.maloney@btinternet.com and I'll dig them out for you. Was invited up to the 30th floor of Canary Wharf recently, as part of the Friends of Island History Trust, took a few pics. Lots of new buildings still going up. Have a few of them on my Flickr site, also some taken from top of Pan Peninsular & No. I Bank Street too. www.flickr.com/photos/16248958@N08/36885369816/in/dateposted-public/
