Back in the day Commercial Road was busy with shoppers. Now it's mainly devoid of people shopping and character. Our city fathers have a lot to answer for
Couldn’t believe what I saw at Southsea last spring when I visited for the first time in 40 years. Closed shops mostly!! Was always so busy. RIP Knight and Lee!
Our family spent most of our summers in the 1950's on Wadham Rd with our step grand parents. Pop was a foreman in the Dockyard during the war. I went to Stamshawe.I shall never forget taking the trolley to get the ferry over to Hayling . Sorry Pompey has deteriorated so badly.
I used to love the place. It had character and a feeling. Now it's soulless. They've got a university that's an embarrassment. They churn out pointless degrees, and got the lowest score EVER on University Challenge. It was once a PROUD City. I wouldn't live there again, if they were giving properties away !
Proof that the quality of life has diminished in these parts. There is nothing beautiful in any area of Portsmouth where ordinary people congregate and Commercial Road is a disgrace. The council is to blame, selling us out to the land-grabbing university, the dominion of the motor car, the greed of landlords, and the gig economy/food fascists aka the catering industry. Shameful.
@@susandennis347 Yet I bet he was only thinking of Portsmouth people. Unlike today's Council who only think about Students or property that locals can't afford
They rebuilt it like Coventry, that was also flattened by the Germans. In my opinion the Germans should now pay to rebuild Plymouth and Coventry and make them look beautiful, like they were before Hitler. If they won't pay, German products should be banned for ever from sale in Plymouth and Coventry. Close the Mercedes and Volkswagen dealerships etc. The Germans brought all that harm and death to Europe and after the war the Americans gave them billions of Dollars in the Marshal Plan. Crazy.
They've ripped the heart out of Portsmouth I'm afraid its just all roads and roundabouts, give me back the Pompey of the 60s wouldn't want to live there now !!!!!!!
The 'before' photo of the guildhall definitely looks much better! With alot of the other areas, some look better now but alot don't, I think in alot of areas they have let the trees get too big for their surroundings, making it seem a bit closed in.
You can see how much the car rules planning thinking. I moved out of Copnor 9 years ago when I couldn’t even park on my own road. I bought the house in 1989 and if I had a day off then mine would be one of about 10 cars left in the road. I’ve driven past for memories sake in the middle of the day and the road is always filled with cars. What do people do? Who goes to work nowadays? Glad I’m out
Online shopping made Commercial Road 'dead' with empty modern buildings and overgrown trees. Time to go back to the old ways and let cars through parts of Comical Road?
3.54 brought back some repressed memories I hadn't thought about in over 20 years. Watched a young couple get mowed down and killed by a drink driving woman at that crossing. Damn.
Portsmouth used to be great in the 70s and early 80s, not the Portsmouth city I grew up in, Portsmouth council absolutely ruined city feeling, only decent thing left is fratton park ,

More down to the rise of online shopping.
Chokes me Up.
Unrecognisable now.
Thank you loved the way you have created it , I was born in Portsmouth 1933 now in South Australia. Keep going Tony 😊

Pompey city centre has lost its character. It could be anywhere in the UK.
Shame it’s not like that anymore 😢😢😢

What on earth did they do to the place 😞
Fantastic shots indeed. Such changes over the years. Many thanks for sharing.
My old man always said Portsmouth City Council done more damage to this city, than what the Germans did.
And I’m ashamed to say my father worked for the planning dept of Portsmouth Corporation 😏. The Tricorn and all that awful concrete

Now full of ugly modern buildings
Another fascinating video...well done

Any salty sea dogs remember the pub called the ‘Mighty fine’ ?
A bit dodgy from memory!?

@ Robert, I think Gun wharf helped towards the decline of Commercial Road
@@intrepidbun5002 Yes it did, but I can't list all the reasons in 1 sentence.

Does anyone remember or have pictures of Garrison School?
I think the modern images must be 10 years old, I can’t see any immigrants😂
Looking back it looks dated but it does not look like the shit-hole it does now !!!
