  • This is a short video on how to change the gear head on a straight shaft weed trimmer. The model being changed is a Shindaiwa T242 straight shaft weed trimmer. This procedure will be almost the same for most straight shaft trimmers. The Echo and Shindaiwa products will be the same procedure for changing gear heads.

NIce tutorial, Hoss! I was holding my breath that no parts fell in the swimming pool. On my Shindaiwa the engine runs fine but no power gets to the trimmer head. I checked the clutch and it looked good with lots of friction material left. Then I took off the gear head and it was tight and good as were the drive cable splines. At this point it looks like the drive cable might be broken inside the tube. Will look at that tomorrow.

As a small engines mech dealing with shindaiwas. Rebuilding is simply hot water to heat gearcase and circlip pliers. 2x gears and 3x bearings. Recommended greasing would be on a 3 month schedule or after a hard day. (The gearheads get so hot they melt the grease which then drains out.)

hey i just bought an old c27 off marketplace and its sat for many years, after running it i wanna make sure i grease it correctly, could you go a little more in depth?

@@Jszul2318 ok pull trimmer head off. Then remove the bolt head screws on. remove blade retaining cap and collar under it. then bolt on side of gearbox not the attaching bolt the other one. then pump new grease in that bolt hole till u see new grease come out end where collar and cap were. fit side bolt put collar then cap then head back on. If you have a good local shop they should show you how for free or do it for you cheap. hardest part is thread head screws onto likes sticking in place. it does have a slot so u can use screwdriver to undo if need be.

@@glennlurman3514 thanks bro I'll do it tomorrow, can I grab a grease at home depot or something?

@@Jszul2318 yep just a generic grease could go lithium or whatever. regrease head attaching bolt when you put it back together and make sure you pull the collar from in the middle or you will pump grease it wont purge old grease out instead will blow out end bearing seal, next thing you know all your grease from gearbox will be at your clutch

@@glennlurman3514 One more thing please, could i replace the t27s carb and fuel tank grommet with that of a t270 with a proper fuel bulb that pumps into tank? the t27 appears to dump on the ground and uses a strange mechanical purge system.

mine won't line up, the little piece sticking out is too the side and won't line up inside the shaft, to put it back on. it won't go all the way up to screw the unit back on. it's not in the middle like yours. what do I do? I tried using a coat hanger to hold it in the middle but it's not working.

Well done you make it look easy but, my problem is the flat head screw is so tight I can't get it loose causing the screw head to stripe

Channe locks, grab the metal ring and slide a screwdriver through the plastic part and turn while holding onto the metal ring

I guess I got the only Shidaiwa that doesn’t have the spot for a screwdriver to go in, to take the head off. I’ve watched video after video and have t found it yet.
