I remember watching this as a young kid, I met Katie Monahan, and Melanie Smith a few times at competitions, got autographs, spoke because they remembered me. The last was the Mercedes show jumping trials at Valley Forge for the USET Olympic Team. It was an amazing time for me, as this was a goal of mine back then, and I almost had it.

You know it kinda reminds me of what hockey was in the 70s too when players didn't wear helmets. I guess every sport has tended to smarten up about safety.

This is footage from a documentary called "Riding For America". The documentary covers all 3 USET sports, Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping. This is just part of the Eventing portion of the film. Eventing has changed very much from this old "classic format" program, now there is only 1 phase on endurance day and that is the old phase D, Cross country, which has gotten harder. Many rules have changed such as you may not continue on after a fall. Great to see these old school riders again!
Wonderful video! Loved seeing so many of the greats! As a side note (which you may well already know) the thumb nail intro photo is Katie Ruppel on her Sir Donovan at the 2013 Rolex Kentucky CCI 4 Star in which she placed 15th, a photo taken by Tara Katherine and one of my favorites of he & Katie.

This is a great video. Kim Walnes and The Grey Goose are incredible. Its great to see them in action (grey horse, rider wears orange and black), they won Rolex in 1982. The Grey Gooses ashes are burried near the Head Of The Lake at the horse park.
I have so much respect for riders in this sport, the people and the horses themselves are just amazing!

I'm the person that when the horse falls on me while I'm riding him, but if I break my leg the first thing I would ask would be is if the horse was okay. I don't care about my injuries, I care about my horse!!!

Robotssss Sometimes it's not either you, or the horses fault that one of you gets injured, just a matter of being in the wrong place and the wrong time.
1. never the horses fault
2. i was talking about the fact that you are forcing these horses to gallop over jumps- many of which are solid and don't give should the horse trip fall increasing the risk of injury
3. all with metal in their mouths- which are closed with figure eights so they cant try to avoid the bit, spurs in their sides and crops in hand
4. you're putting your horse at risk for nothing other than your own entertainment
Yeah I am the same, I am doing 1* eventing right now and a year ago my horse had a fall on a jump on the XC course and he nearly broke a leg, luckily he is leg was fixed and we are back in events now!!
+Robotssss Some horses geniunley love competing and enjoy their job. and hackamores and bitless bridles can sometimes be ore harsh on a horse.

I don't see the fun in this level of eventing. Why would anyone want to see how hard they can push their horse and themselves for sport? I can see people that have a death wish doing this stuff by why take your horse with you?
well by your logic, you could say that about ANY sport at the olympic level. And just FYI, these horses love it just as much as their riders. You couldnt convince a horse to do this unless they absolutely loved it. Horseback riding is a dangerous sport in general, and you clearly dont event, so I wouldn't expect you to understand this.
How do you know the horses love it? Can you read a horse's mind?
Bill Baehr If the horses did not love it, they wouldn't be doing it. This is a very dangerous sport, as you can obviously see - and the Riders go through a plethora of horses to find the one who has the pop, spark, enthusiasm and passion for the sport as the rider does. To compete with a horse who does not share the same passion, you both can get severely hurt. These horses you see at the top levels, made it through many tests by the riders to ensure that they are the right choice.
If the horses loved "it" they would be doing stuff like this on their own. When was the last time you saw a horse jumping an event course without a rider forcing it to go on? Horses love it? You are so full of shit.
Bill Baehr if you don't event - you have no business stuffing your ignorant opinions into the matter. If you don't ride it, experience it, training it - then your opinions are ignorant :) You have no idea what goes on in the search of that perfect partner, you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes in preparation, you have no clue - so therefore, you are ignorant on the matter :)

@lucyinthesky80 Yes... because a 125 pound human can defiantly muscle a 1200 pound horse over a jump. These horses ADORE what they do and hate whenever they have to take time off they literally go insane. My horse has been off competition training for seven months and he's becoming a monster by kicking fences and randomly sprinting around his field because he's bored and wants a job. These horses love what they do or they wouldn't do it.
This ws "the good old days" when I was doingit ; and had yet to be injured; that would happen later!

Gotta say- i GREATLY commend these riders back in the day for just HOW INSANELY WELL they STUCK IT OUT with their horses & manage to not only STAY ON, and keep their horse from completely falling on its face, PLUS they still pull off getting OVER the fences... man they were BALLSY but some seriousy skilled riders very in tune with their horses too!!

that's ridicules. horses make mistakes all the time. it's part of being a living, thinking creature.
true... but, riding mistakes are almost always caused by the rider (for disturbing the horse his movements)

thats rubbish- when my horse tripped over his own feet and fell on top of me that was completely his fault. I've made plenty of mistakes and most of the time my horse bails me out (for which I am very grateful to him) but he screws up as well and I do my best to help him but shit happens and everyone makes mistakes.
