Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster Handlebar swap story

  • The Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster comes with swept back beach bars - which is a different hand/wrist placement compared to traditional handlebars. There are some traditional western style bars that may be found here: bellacorse.com... but I have not tried them. The Bonneville Bobber bars are interchangeable, but are like drag bars and very straight. The Triumph T120 bars are pre-drilled as well and interchangeable with the Speedmaster as you will see in this video, but I did not like them. If you like the look of mini apes, Triumph also has this option. The Speedmaster bars are 1" and if you do trade them out, if you get ones that are not made by Triumph they will need to be drilled. Risers are hard to find due to the bolt needed for the triple tree. I do not like the look of the ROX risers. Newbonneville.com and AJ cycles carry the Motone 1" up and over risers that may help some, but in the end I am sticking with the beach bars as standard.

    My buddy Keith, a lifelong biker has always said "forget the numbers, torque, power, etc, ride position/comfort is key". No validity in riding a nuclear powered monster if your back is killing you after ten miles.
    Great video, as ever.

    It's possible to mount the mid controls of the bobber on the speedmaster. It will bring your feets further back. If your feets are further back it will be easier to lean forward.

    I've grown to love the beach bars. No weight on the wrists or shoulders, and they work well in conjunction with the position of the pegs. And they look right. I've got a 2018 Red, and am thinking about painting it a light blue or teal. Much harder to swap it back if I decide I don't like the color. Nice bike.

      i am back with the beach bars too and have grown to love them as well. now i need to find something that makes the best wind screen. dart flyscreen that i have looks good but throws wind at my helmet and makes it very loud :( Don’t paint the bike just get the different color gas tank

  • @mikecosentino6775
    @mikecosentino6775 3 года назад +1

    I also have a speedmaster absolutely love this bike. The Handel bars could use a more turn for the wrist. my biggest problem from day one also was the throttle as so I machined a custom end for the grip that keeps constant drag so you can feel the engine as if you had a cable and carburetor. This made a one hundred percent improvement for a smooth controlled riding.

  • @bobwelp3992
    @bobwelp3992 2 года назад +1

    Mine is the reverse situation. I have a T120 and don't care for the forward position of the handlebars. I am about to swap out the standard handlebars with the Speed master beach bars. I have the Rix risers on there now and don't like them any more than you do. So, once the beach bars are installed today, I'll take a long test ride and remove the Fox risers myself if I think the beach bars alone will work. I did have to get cable extensions to reach the beach bars. So now it's off to the dealership and see how this all works out.

    • @TinyDragon
      @TinyDragon  2 года назад

      i ended ip going back to the beach bars - got used to them and they look better imo. However I no longer have this bike - now have two beautiful Harleys. A 2021 sport glide and a 2021 road king special

    • @bobwelp3992
      @bobwelp3992 2 года назад

      @@TinyDragon Sorry you gave up on the Speedmaster, but Harleys are good too. Update - The dealership put the beachbars on my T120 and I took it for a 180 mile ride. It was still putting me a little too far forward so I put my 2" risers back on the new handlebars and it was perfect. One side benefit is that the beachbars look great on the bike. The Triumph technician commented that he thought they looked and handled better than the stock bars. I agree. BTW, I also have 2 bikes. My T120 and a 2009 Triumph T100, that gets lots of comments. No matter what you ride, as long as you like it, you're comfortable and you stay safe, it's all good.

    • @TinyDragon
      @TinyDragon  2 года назад

      no they looked ugly…. the ROX risers looked like a bunch of damn jinga motorcycle pieces and they can twist if not installed properly- basically they were just ruining the look of the bike. Then i had the t40 bar installed and the bike was not as comfortable nor did it handle as well imo. therefore at the end of the day I went back to the original beach bars that were on it and at the very end of the day I finally got a real motorcycle- A 2021 Harley sport glide 😂and then i loved it so much I also bought a Harley davidson road king special so now I have two big engine harleys- a softail and a touring bike and couldn’t be happier. better quality and definitely more bad ass. good riddance to that hipster bike 🤣 here are my two bikes sport glide; road king special, and my wife’s street bob. we made a little artistic video clip of all three - they are stunning. ruclips.net/video/eXhA39BZaJ4/видео.html

    I share your frustration and am amazed there is so little talked about in relation to potential handlebar options. Triumph dealerships don’t seem to have the knowledge for after-sales either! The beach bars look the part, handsome and stylish, but they are impractical if you want to ‘really’ ride the bike. I have spent 8 months and 3 costly attempts sorting mine sadly. I am glad I persisted however. 1 inch motone risers, with the t120 bars do the job in my view. I am just under 6 foot and now feel I can relax and cruise if I want, or i can make use of that terrific engine and hussle the bike a little! The new handlebar set-up gives me better cornering control, and more confidence during acceleration and braking. I changed the fat grips to normal also for better grip control. I hope this helps some?

    • @TinyDragon
      @TinyDragon  3 года назад

      I tried the T 120 bars without the motones (bc no one had them bc of COVID) and it didn’t work well for me so I went back to stock and then the motones came in and that helped. It is now comfy but ya gotta watch that hand position and throttle on this bike. It is a torque monster !!!!

    It seems to me “somewhat” unbelievable that with hundreds of accessory parts Triumph has for the Speedmaster, your dealership couldn’t come up with your desired risers.

      actually Triumph does not make a riser for this (unless they started with 2021 models). You can get them from Motone 1” up and overs. made a huge difference. Don’t have this bike anymore tho- traded it in two weeks ago on an awesome Harley Road King special. see my latest vids

    Motone up and over risers would have fitted and raised it an inch or two and swept back an in or two, then fit grass tracker type handlebars, they come in many sizes and sweep, and you could also fit the bobber mid footrests. i had a set of Harley beach bars given to me to fit to my Harley 883 iron but didn't like the angle on the wrists that your talking about so looked at the grass tracker type bars that were fitted to the Harley nightster, i didn't put risers on as i thought it lifted them up enough with just the range of height profile, which it did and the extra sweep back from the tracker style bars (2 inch approx) done the job, now feels well comfy to ride for long periods. i have kept my mid mounts on also . different brand of bike i know but same problem, hope this helps someone.

Then a trip to the hardware store for bolts and a slight modification to the tapered rubber bushings did the trick. Im 5 foot 9.5 inches tall. Great video and very informative. I've had 6 Harley Davidson bikes and changed the bars multiple times on most of them. I have a couple of adventure bikes and risers seem to work there. I just bought a 2023 T 120 black. I do like the mid mount controls but after a long day my knees are burning. I am getting the dealer to mount dresser bars and I'll install after market foot pegs. This will allow me to stretch my legs. That being said, forward legs and forward type handle bars don't blend. So I'm searching for a pair of bars that come back a bit. I've had beach bars and they kink my wrist. Swept back are better. There is a picture of Marlon Brando with his triumph and the bars look perfect.

    Very informative. Great video 👍🏻
    I am 6’1” and planning to buy my first bike next week. Looking for a old school bobber look with a passenger seat. I liked the Royal Enfield INT 650 and put down a security deposit. But have been looking at the Speed Master(online only) and just love the looks. Now have a hard time deciding between the 2X price point of the speed Master compared and the well priced INT 650. Love the looks of the speed Master. Any recommendations?

    • @TinyDragon
      @TinyDragon  3 года назад +2

      Definitely worth the price. I have a Harley Sport Glide on order. At 20 thousand dollars it does have almost 1800cc and about 114 ft lbs of torque- however it only has something like 86 hp. for 14k (closer to 15k out the door), the speedmaster at only 1200 cc has almost 80ft lbs of torque and almost 80 hp... and it is a couple hundred pounds lighter... hence the name speedmaster. It is a very powerful ride, is a piece of art, turns heads and gets attention everywhere I go and is respected by the Harley crowd to boot. The only reason I am getting the Harley is to have the extra storage of the bags, fairing, pre load adjustment made easy and cast wheels rather than spokes and tubes for the longer rides, but the upgraded seat is super comfy on the speedmaster. easily do 100 mile ride. it is a refined ride but goes from walking horse to thoroughbred quickly. You know i like it if I am keeping it even after getting the HD sport glide - which is worth checking out as well

      @TinyDragon  3 года назад +2

      PS - at 6’1” you will probably feel cramped on most 650 cc bikes. Normally for a first bike you don’t want to get over 750cc until you get some miles under your belt BUT the speedmaster is very manageable in size so the 1200cc is perfect. Be sure to adjust the pre-load suspension for the best ride. I keep mine on the softest setting but if I were heavier I would be bottoming it out a bit. The sport glide is quite impressive as well, but again it all comes down to price points. Don’t be discouraged but most people always drop their first bike at some point so be prepared with the speedmaster that there are really no crash bars made for it... so always check that kickstand is down firmly ;) or it will be an expensive fix... nothing at the triumph dealership is cheap. Gonna sub ur channel and hope to see ur uploads!

    Motone customs! Makes a full set of risers for all triumph Bonneville models and ather parts for them . the risers put bars 1 in. up and 1 in. back. it puts your hands right in the right place on the hand grips. What a waist of time and money. Need to know where to look! And its not at the dealers they will sell you anything to make money! Cheers!

    Coming from any other normal ride, I’m not surprised you found the stock bars uncomfortable. It’s because they are. But didn’t Triumph offer a straight bar option??? I thought they were called maverick bars or something?! Nice overview. Oddly enough, I have a T120 and although the bars are very comfortable (with a 1” riser), I may swap them for Western Bars! 🤷‍♂️

    Why do we always have to settle? Is it so hard to have parts available? Is everything made in China?
    There is a tracker style handlebar that should work well with a 1 & 1” riser… if you can find them, if they are in stock, if they actually arrive, if they actually fit and if they’re actually complete.

    Triumph sells official straight bars for this bike.why wouldn’t you fit those.. I have a speedy going to fit the monotone x and de-cat next week can’t wait. Oh love the blue tank might get my done in a sky blue and cream from black

    • @TinyDragon

      actually they didn’t sell the straight bars for the speedmaster in 2020 - maybe they are now doing this, but i haven’t checked into it- i could have used the straight bars from the bobber at the time, but the point is i didn’t want to be leaning forward. the idea was to still be able to have some pull back to be in about the same position without them being beach bars that out your hands and wrists at an angle like holding a wheelbarrow. anyway, i have gotten use to them now and the motone up and over feels great. blue is my favorite color- it really is a beautiful bike to behold. There has not been one time that I have been on it and someone didn’t comment or ask about it

    Of course, as luck would have it, I had just watched and left a comment on your earlier video. Having to use trial and error for bike parts is not that uncommon and I feel your frustration. The riding position that the Speedmaster puts you in really can limit your options for function and comfort. I rode a '14 H-D Night Rod 44,000 miles in four seasons and, having shorter arms, I always wished for a two inch closer reach. However, options were very limited and I just lived with it and adjusted my position just a smidge. I stick with my earlier comment about easing your grip and relaxing your hands. Just like on a gravel road, the bike's front end will do what it's supposed to. Have you watched Jay Leno's review and thoughts on the Speedmaster? It's worth a gander.

    • @TinyDragon
      @TinyDragon  3 года назад +1

      i need to go read your other comments now. i have seen the jay leno vid and yes totally agree it is a bike that is great for just a sunday ride. i don’t like having to reach forward for the T120 bars so the beach bars are best and allow for a bend in the arms. when i made my review video i probably had the bike a day? let me go see ur other comment

    T100 & T120 handlebars are too skinny for such a heavy bike. A tracker bar is better for me.

    • @TinyDragon
      @TinyDragon  2 года назад

      I guess I don’t think this bike is heavy seeing as it is under 600lbs - of course i now have the two harleys. I got rid of this bike after getting the first harley (sport glide) traded the speedmaster for a road king special so i also have a bike with a touring frame / suspension and true bags. these bikes are in the 700 and 800lb ranges and cc wise are 1700-1900 (107 and 114ci). The bonneville was beautiful but it was very twitchy and nowhere near as “solid” at speed as either Harley.

    So all of this back & forth because the bolts for the risers you preferred were too long? Simply buy the same grade bolts in the required length and issue solved. I gotta be missing something? Beautiful bike by the way.

    • @TinyDragon
      @TinyDragon  2 года назад

      The bolts would have to be the same grade for sure for integrity and they are not a standard size - thought about that one as well... I no longer have this bike. I now have a 2021 HD sport glide and a 2021 HD road king special. More power less drama. :)
