Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster Handlebar swap story

- The Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster comes with swept back beach bars - which is a different hand/wrist placement compared to traditional handlebars. There are some traditional western style bars that may be found here: bellacorse.com... but I have not tried them. The Bonneville Bobber bars are interchangeable, but are like drag bars and very straight. The Triumph T120 bars are pre-drilled as well and interchangeable with the Speedmaster as you will see in this video, but I did not like them. If you like the look of mini apes, Triumph also has this option. The Speedmaster bars are 1" and if you do trade them out, if you get ones that are not made by Triumph they will need to be drilled. Risers are hard to find due to the bolt needed for the triple tree. I do not like the look of the ROX risers. Newbonneville.com and AJ cycles carry the Motone 1" up and over risers that may help some, but in the end I am sticking with the beach bars as standard.

My buddy Keith, a lifelong biker has always said "forget the numbers, torque, power, etc, ride position/comfort is key". No validity in riding a nuclear powered monster if your back is killing you after ten miles.
Great video, as ever.
well i was thinking those beach bars were going to cause me a lot of problems (including safety) but come to find out the standard stay handlebars were awful on this bike
Comfort is king
It's possible to mount the mid controls of the bobber on the speedmaster. It will bring your feets further back. If your feets are further back it will be easier to lean forward.
I've grown to love the beach bars. No weight on the wrists or shoulders, and they work well in conjunction with the position of the pegs. And they look right. I've got a 2018 Red, and am thinking about painting it a light blue or teal. Much harder to swap it back if I decide I don't like the color. Nice bike.
i am back with the beach bars too and have grown to love them as well. now i need to find something that makes the best wind screen. dart flyscreen that i have looks good but throws wind at my helmet and makes it very loud :( Don’t paint the bike just get the different color gas tank
So what you are saying after all that is Triumph knows Beast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You could have saved yourself a lot of time here! Have a nice Day!
that is exactly the moral of this story - manufacturer and design team know best!
Hahah.. I had the same bloody experience in 2020 on my new speedmaster with T120 bar, and went back to the beach bars.. You spoke my mind :) :).. Good review. Keep em coming
i did get the motone up and over risers and am going to make a quick video on that soon!
@@TinyDragon I am waiting keenly to see what happens. How would it look on Chrome handle? These come in black it seems. Cheerio
i found chrome ones! Motone is apparently making them again
@@TinyDragon cool. that is news indeed.
Very nice motobike ! My dad's brother had one 45 years ago !A big Triumph , don't remember the model of course ! Bet you love it !!
I do love it. 1200 cc, 77 HP and 78 ft lbs of torque.... it looks small but it is almost 600lbs wet weight. Its something like 540 dry. It is very deceiving. Of course it isnt as big as a bagger style touring bike but it is a lot bigger engine than it appears in the frame
Sounds great !! Enjoy the rides ! Safely ! : )
Love your bike beautiful, have the speedmaster myself only had it since march just love it had a triumph bobber with Ape hangers and they were very, very comfortable but now finding the beach bar's on the speedmaster just fine but think they look great, better looking than the Ape hangers so definitely keeping the beach bar's, your bike looks great enjoy and ride Safe.
thx - it was a beautiful bike but i now have two kick ass amazing Harley Davidsons. I have a 2021 sport glide and a 2021 road king special- powerful engines with american touring power - they handle great as well. hope u check out more of my vids and thank you!!!!!!
I love Triumph motorbikes - my dad used to ride them when he was younger. An excellent video my friend!
thank you! The new generation of the Triumphs are still very refined and classy but the new technology and horsepower is very noticeable- your dad would approve
I’m so happy I stopped to watch your video! I’ve been doing many mods to my Speedmaster and have been thinking about the straight bars swap - I’ll now rule it out! Have fun , ride safe
Awesome filming .so in love with color
Good and informative for anyone that rides a Speedmaster. 💪🏻
Really cool !!!
Thanks for sharing, my friend !!!
Nice video..Motorbikes and rock chics...great combination...Love xx
and one day you will have a motorcycle I am sure -
Shame the risers and bars didn't work out for you. Surprised they couldn't find risers that worked. Like the other upgrades!😊👍
there arent many that fit the triple tree that would have more than a 2” pull back. inwas trying to get the handlebars in the same place so i would not have to lean forward as the beauty of the beachbars is the absolute upright riding position
@@TinyDragon Luckily I was able to find 4 inch pull back risers for mine. Gave just the right reach for a comfortable riding position.
@@boomerbassmeme Really ,,,, do you have any information on what they were and maybe a photo ?
Thank you for your experience and the tip about rain mode in town and I will use it for text ride.
it just smooths out the throttle response- just in case you accidentally blip the sensitive grip… doesn’t take much to pull it and in first gear a blip will throw your head back… bike will still have plenty of power - trust me. sometimes i put it in rain mode in the twisties ;)
British Customs has the Tracker handlebars with the cables as a kit
I also have a speedmaster absolutely love this bike. The Handel bars could use a more turn for the wrist. my biggest problem from day one also was the throttle as so I machined a custom end for the grip that keeps constant drag so you can feel the engine as if you had a cable and carburetor. This made a one hundred percent improvement for a smooth controlled riding.
Mine is the reverse situation. I have a T120 and don't care for the forward position of the handlebars. I am about to swap out the standard handlebars with the Speed master beach bars. I have the Rix risers on there now and don't like them any more than you do. So, once the beach bars are installed today, I'll take a long test ride and remove the Fox risers myself if I think the beach bars alone will work. I did have to get cable extensions to reach the beach bars. So now it's off to the dealership and see how this all works out.
i ended ip going back to the beach bars - got used to them and they look better imo. However I no longer have this bike - now have two beautiful Harleys. A 2021 sport glide and a 2021 road king special
@@TinyDragon Sorry you gave up on the Speedmaster, but Harleys are good too. Update - The dealership put the beachbars on my T120 and I took it for a 180 mile ride. It was still putting me a little too far forward so I put my 2" risers back on the new handlebars and it was perfect. One side benefit is that the beachbars look great on the bike. The Triumph technician commented that he thought they looked and handled better than the stock bars. I agree. BTW, I also have 2 bikes. My T120 and a 2009 Triumph T100, that gets lots of comments. No matter what you ride, as long as you like it, you're comfortable and you stay safe, it's all good.
Mid controls and tracker bars transforms this bike into a more sporty/cruiser for easier twisty riding and better lean angle while offering great riding position.
wouldn’t know now bc i got rid of it and have a couple of harleys! lol 😂 thanks for watching though and giving some input if others are watching this and considering this bike
Awesome video thats a nice bike too and love the handlebars!!

As I've mentioned to you the other day, I've never tried a motorcycle but this look so cool. You're really awesome 👌
you are awesome my friend ! i still think you should try it! if you can ride a bicycle then you are 75% there
Amazing motorcycle review my friend! Thank you so much for sharing this video. This is actually useful. I love it. See you again partner. :)
thank you so much for stopping by my channel!!!!
good stuff, makes me miss riding even more! :)
This was very helpful. Thank you. Ride safe.
glad you liked!
Sweet!!!! I always think of the band When I see a Triumph!!!!nice share!!!!
it is way too much fun - i find myself being quite unproductive these days thinking about the next ride
What happened with the Rox risers, they slipped while you were riding on another bike. Now I’m afraid as my spouse has them to install for an Indian Scout.
no they looked ugly…. the ROX risers looked like a bunch of damn jinga motorcycle pieces and they can twist if not installed properly- basically they were just ruining the look of the bike. Then i had the t40 bar installed and the bike was not as comfortable nor did it handle as well imo. therefore at the end of the day I went back to the original beach bars that were on it and at the very end of the day I finally got a real motorcycle- A 2021 Harley sport glide 😂and then i loved it so much I also bought a Harley davidson road king special so now I have two big engine harleys- a softail and a touring bike and couldn’t be happier. better quality and definitely more bad ass. good riddance to that hipster bike 🤣 here are my two bikes sport glide; road king special, and my wife’s street bob. we made a little artistic video clip of all three - they are stunning. ruclips.net/video/eXhA39BZaJ4/видео.html
Helpful, thanks . Subbed from Scotland , fellow bonnie owner 🏴👍🏼
Excellent! Love it!
wow thanks Karlos!
Tiny Dragon, I've never ridden a motorcycle but I sure do appreciate hearing about the mechanics of a bike and since I don't ride I never knew what a difference the position of the handlebars would make.
oh yeah.. a few inches of relief in the handlebars is like the same difference of minor adjustments in string height. a little can go a long way.
Tiny Dragon, that's a good analogy and it makes a lot of sense.
I share your frustration and am amazed there is so little talked about in relation to potential handlebar options. Triumph dealerships don’t seem to have the knowledge for after-sales either! The beach bars look the part, handsome and stylish, but they are impractical if you want to ‘really’ ride the bike. I have spent 8 months and 3 costly attempts sorting mine sadly. I am glad I persisted however. 1 inch motone risers, with the t120 bars do the job in my view. I am just under 6 foot and now feel I can relax and cruise if I want, or i can make use of that terrific engine and hussle the bike a little! The new handlebar set-up gives me better cornering control, and more confidence during acceleration and braking. I changed the fat grips to normal also for better grip control. I hope this helps some?
I tried the T 120 bars without the motones (bc no one had them bc of COVID) and it didn’t work well for me so I went back to stock and then the motones came in and that helped. It is now comfy but ya gotta watch that hand position and throttle on this bike. It is a torque monster !!!!
This was a great video and it saved me time and money.
I love the bikes you review!!! Awesome review girl 🖤
thanks for stopping by!!!!!
Nice bike ✌👍
thank you - can’t wait for better weather
Just ran across your WONDERFUL video regarding the Speedmaster handlebars.
It seems to me “somewhat” unbelievable that with hundreds of accessory parts Triumph has for the Speedmaster, your dealership couldn’t come up with your desired risers.
Maybe try Triumph customer service…. Even to recommend a manufacturer that would have suitable risers.
Well…. Very well done video.. 👍👍
Lots of Luck….!!!
Blessings…..
actually Triumph does not make a riser for this (unless they started with 2021 models). You can get them from Motone 1” up and overs. made a huge difference. Don’t have this bike anymore tho- traded it in two weeks ago on an awesome Harley Road King special. see my latest vids
Motone up and over risers would have fitted and raised it an inch or two and swept back an in or two, then fit grass tracker type handlebars, they come in many sizes and sweep, and you could also fit the bobber mid footrests. i had a set of Harley beach bars given to me to fit to my Harley 883 iron but didn't like the angle on the wrists that your talking about so looked at the grass tracker type bars that were fitted to the Harley nightster, i didn't put risers on as i thought it lifted them up enough with just the range of height profile, which it did and the extra sweep back from the tracker style bars (2 inch approx) done the job, now feels well comfy to ride for long periods. i have kept my mid mounts on also . different brand of bike i know but same problem, hope this helps someone.
i added the motones after this. i got rid of this bike- i now have a 21 road king special in the stable next to my 21 sport glide. go harley davidson!
Good Stuff Mo. Stay Safe.
Hi Dragon lady. Very nice your video updates! Can I ask you what is windshield? Looks good on your bike! Thanks!
Dart flyscreen www.dartflyscreens.com
I got the bobber bars with aftermarket 5 inch risers and 2 inch pullback, its a perfect set up now. I think i got the risers from Dennis Kirk. Then a trip to the hardware store for bolts and a slight modification to the tapered rubber bushings did the trick. Im 5 foot 9.5 inches tall. The best thing about the alternate bars is they are only 28.5 inches across. Much better handling now. Reply if you want me to send you more info and a picture of my bike
would love pics. tinydragonvideo@gmail.com
I love your channel. Your videos look amazing 😉
Fantastic Moto Bro 👊👊👊
Great video and very informative. I've had 6 Harley Davidson bikes and changed the bars multiple times on most of them. I have a couple of adventure bikes and risers seem to work there. I just bought a 2023 T 120 black. I do like the mid mount controls but after a long day my knees are burning. I am getting the dealer to mount dresser bars and I'll install after market foot pegs. This will allow me to stretch my legs. That being said, forward legs and forward type handle bars don't blend. So I'm searching for a pair of bars that come back a bit. I've had beach bars and they kink my wrist. Swept back are better. There is a picture of Marlon Brando with his triumph and the bars look perfect.
Glad you liked this video! I have had all kinds of bikes as well and the right fit is so important. Triumph makes an aesthetically beautiful bike imo but i could not get happy with this bike. I am now riding a 2021 HD road king special and a 2021 HD sport glide. love them
I ordered and received the Motone Customs risers in black-one inch up and one inch back. Can’t wait for three feet of snow to melt and frost to come out of the ground. Would you like a report, say mid May?
I would love to see one and if you do a video, I will post the link to it in the description of my video
Nice analysis of the handle bars. I liked the bike because of the handle bars. I am wondering how do you find the screen? Is it effective?
@@nebupm screen was not effective
dam you be careful ! That is awesome though ! Love you 2
I have the same reoccurring thoughts about the beach bars on my HD Low Rider. Love the look and they are mostly comfortable but I get a pain between my shoulders after a while. Mini apes might be good but HD charge a small mortgage to fit them. Like you say it is just a case of getting used to them. Beach style bars do suit Speed Master/Low Rider bikes. Thanks
yeah they are weird to get used too, but they do force you into that upright riding on a lazy boy position. Saw a Road King with them yesterday- usually people like the big apes on those, but it looked nice
awesome! nice bike!! 65
Great Video Mo,Sorry you Wont Be With Laurie ,You Made a Great Team,As Soon as I Have The Stuff Here I Will Get ahold of you,I'm Hoping anyday Now,Beautiful Bike There,See You Soon,Cant Wait To Work With You ,Thanks For Sharing ,See You Soon,Keep Rockin 🤘🖤✌👍
did the instruments come in? Yes we are a good team, but I may be doing something nee at work and time is more limited. I can not be spread so thin
What a beautiful bike. How do you think it would be for a larger rider and a passenger? I can not find anything on the weight capacity.
I am 5’4 and am comfortable with it but would not want a larger bike if that gives you an indication if you see me on it on one of the videos. The guys at the dealership are six foot dudes and they do not look like they are too big for it. 440 lbs is max load weight. more than this you need something like 1700 and 1800 cc and a touring bike instead of a cruiser. thanks for visiting!
Love the looks of this bike!!
Would love to get this as a 2nd bike, my wife won't ride with me without a back rest..
But it's a bit outside of my budget at the time, hopefully get one in a few years though. :)
Thank you ! what is your current bike?
@@TinyDragon Kawasaki W650, modded to look like an old BSA.
@@RVRCloset does your wife ride on this with you? no back rest on that either right? give that one to her and get another one ;)
forgot to tell you I traded this bike yesterday for another Harley- see my moat recent video
@@TinyDragon Ah nice!
She don't have a bike license..😅
I just got back to riding again, and she thought she would ride behind me, but after she tried climbing up behind me after I got this bike she said "nope, buy a bike with a back rest"😂
Will probably get a Triumph Bonneville America next year, they go pretty cheap used. And trade up to a newer Speedmaster in the future. I love the classic and compact look of the Speedmaster.
I have a Speedmaster too, I love the beach bars, they were easy to get used too having had a Harley before. I like the screen you have fitted, does it make any difference when riding or is it just a cosmetic look? thanks
cosmetic only on the screen. If it made a difference I couldn’t tell - maybe it deflected a few bugs lol
I've a 22 speedmaster with a simular "dart" flyscreen. At 5.7' tall with helmet on the wind goes just over or at the top of the helmet. Deflects alot of bugs though.
Hi, I ordered a Speedmaster with a full front windshield and took it off. Too much noise and buffeting. How do you find the small windshield? Does it deflect much wind off of you?
what it deflects off the chest comes around with full force to graze the arms and shoulders. The buffeting is horrible and concentrated air is full blast to face and top of helmet. took it off. rubbish.
@@TinyDragon Thanks, Mate. If you ever come to the land down under, I will see you down the road in the wind;)
I am looking at the same configuration. I am looking to purchase a 2024 Speedmaster AND I noticed the slight lean forward that had me leaning on my hands more than I liked. Went to parts to see about a OEM riser. Do you have the part number for the one you finally have on the bike. thanks. Very informative video.
@@karolynrice2460 went back to stock bc the risers made the bike look like some kimd of janky jenga project. Hated the beach bars and the way the bike handled- then sold the bike and have ridden Harleys ever since. currently own a 24 road glide.
motone makes an up and over riser i was considering before i sold it. the first set of risers were rox pivoting
Love to see your channel blowing up! Yeah! So cool! Love to you guys!
me too finally! thank you so much
Looking for more video's about this bike
@@nandishcs sold it in 2021. Now have 2021 Harley Davidson Sport Glide and the new 2024 Harley Davidson Road Glide.
@TinyDragon ho was it due to beach bar issue only
@@nandishcs No - the Harleys have bigger engines, more power, better handling, better for distance
Nice video!
I have a speedmaster I opted to go for mid controls with motone risers and the bobber bars..its a very controlled stance and not too much leaning forward..hope this helps...
Did you need to change out the cables?
no
Very informative. Great video 👍🏻
I am 6’1” and planning to buy my first bike next week. Looking for a old school bobber look with a passenger seat. I liked the Royal Enfield INT 650 and put down a security deposit. But have been looking at the Speed Master(online only) and just love the looks. Now have a hard time deciding between the 2X price point of the speed Master compared and the well priced INT 650. Love the looks of the speed Master. Any recommendations?
Definitely worth the price. I have a Harley Sport Glide on order. At 20 thousand dollars it does have almost 1800cc and about 114 ft lbs of torque- however it only has something like 86 hp. for 14k (closer to 15k out the door), the speedmaster at only 1200 cc has almost 80ft lbs of torque and almost 80 hp... and it is a couple hundred pounds lighter... hence the name speedmaster. It is a very powerful ride, is a piece of art, turns heads and gets attention everywhere I go and is respected by the Harley crowd to boot. The only reason I am getting the Harley is to have the extra storage of the bags, fairing, pre load adjustment made easy and cast wheels rather than spokes and tubes for the longer rides, but the upgraded seat is super comfy on the speedmaster. easily do 100 mile ride. it is a refined ride but goes from walking horse to thoroughbred quickly. You know i like it if I am keeping it even after getting the HD sport glide - which is worth checking out as well
PS - at 6’1” you will probably feel cramped on most 650 cc bikes. Normally for a first bike you don’t want to get over 750cc until you get some miles under your belt BUT the speedmaster is very manageable in size so the 1200cc is perfect. Be sure to adjust the pre-load suspension for the best ride. I keep mine on the softest setting but if I were heavier I would be bottoming it out a bit. The sport glide is quite impressive as well, but again it all comes down to price points. Don’t be discouraged but most people always drop their first bike at some point so be prepared with the speedmaster that there are really no crash bars made for it... so always check that kickstand is down firmly ;) or it will be an expensive fix... nothing at the triumph dealership is cheap. Gonna sub ur channel and hope to see ur uploads!
Motone customs! Makes a full set of risers for all triumph Bonneville models and ather parts for them . the risers put bars 1 in. up and 1 in. back. it puts your hands right in the right place on the hand grips. What a waist of time and money. Need to know where to look! And its not at the dealers they will sell you anything to make money! Cheers!
i got the motones - big help!
Coming from any other normal ride, I’m not surprised you found the stock bars uncomfortable. It’s because they are. But didn’t Triumph offer a straight bar option??? I thought they were called maverick bars or something?! Nice overview. Oddly enough, I have a T120 and although the bars are very comfortable (with a 1” riser), I may swap them for Western Bars! 🤷♂️
It's all fun and the end of the day!
yes on my Harleys lol 😂 the Triumph just wasn’t for me. I prefer the two I have now over it. The speedmaster is pretty to look at though, yet still no regrets for switching
Wonderful ❤
Why do we always have to settle? Is it so hard to have parts available? Is everything made in China?
There is a tracker style handlebar that should work well with a 1 & 1” riser… if you can find them, if they are in stock, if they actually arrive, if they actually fit and if they’re actually complete.
Triumph sells official straight bars for this bike.why wouldn’t you fit those.. I have a speedy going to fit the monotone x and de-cat next week can’t wait. Oh love the blue tank might get my done in a sky blue and cream from black
actually they didn’t sell the straight bars for the speedmaster in 2020 - maybe they are now doing this, but i haven’t checked into it- i could have used the straight bars from the bobber at the time, but the point is i didn’t want to be leaning forward. the idea was to still be able to have some pull back to be in about the same position without them being beach bars that out your hands and wrists at an angle like holding a wheelbarrow. anyway, i have gotten use to them now and the motone up and over feels great. blue is my favorite color- it really is a beautiful bike to behold. There has not been one time that I have been on it and someone didn’t comment or ask about it
Where did you get your Triumph keychain?
It was given to me when I purchased the motorcycle along with a triumph backpack
Of course, as luck would have it, I had just watched and left a comment on your earlier video. Having to use trial and error for bike parts is not that uncommon and I feel your frustration. The riding position that the Speedmaster puts you in really can limit your options for function and comfort. I rode a '14 H-D Night Rod 44,000 miles in four seasons and, having shorter arms, I always wished for a two inch closer reach. However, options were very limited and I just lived with it and adjusted my position just a smidge. I stick with my earlier comment about easing your grip and relaxing your hands. Just like on a gravel road, the bike's front end will do what it's supposed to. Have you watched Jay Leno's review and thoughts on the Speedmaster? It's worth a gander.
i need to go read your other comments now. i have seen the jay leno vid and yes totally agree it is a bike that is great for just a sunday ride. i don’t like having to reach forward for the T120 bars so the beach bars are best and allow for a bend in the arms. when i made my review video i probably had the bike a day? let me go see ur other comment
I think
you think what ? ;) I think it is cool u stopped by my channel
Ride safe!!! Tiny!
Did the rises block your view of the speedo?
not at all. the risers are super comfy and blend right in with the bike (even though you do lose the top clamp)
the new bars look better too. gives a better classic look and not a dirt bike look.
Very interesting I really nothing about bikes never even been on one beautiful I’ll definitely say that!! Looks fun to ride that’s where I’d probably have a problem lol I tend to be somewhat of a speed freak, I see the sign here on the highway it say I95 snd I figure that’s the speed limit haha 😆 😎
you can definitely speed on this bike. 1200cc, 78 ft-lbs of torque, 77HP. Thanks for watching!
@@TinyDragon my pleasure!! And my speed wouldn’t be the problem it’s all the driving corpses down here that worries me lol 😂
LOL careful - I hope to be old like that one day and still driving!!!!
very cool tgif
looking forward to another cartoon!
are the bars i in. ?
sold the bike. have two harleys - moved up in cc and power!
Hi
I knew that was you Ben! Didn't know you played the trombone. hi back.
@@TinyDragon love ya
T100 & T120 handlebars are too skinny for such a heavy bike. A tracker bar is better for me.
I guess I don’t think this bike is heavy seeing as it is under 600lbs - of course i now have the two harleys. I got rid of this bike after getting the first harley (sport glide) traded the speedmaster for a road king special so i also have a bike with a touring frame / suspension and true bags. these bikes are in the 700 and 800lb ranges and cc wise are 1700-1900 (107 and 114ci). The bonneville was beautiful but it was very twitchy and nowhere near as “solid” at speed as either Harley.
So all of this back & forth because the bolts for the risers you preferred were too long? Simply buy the same grade bolts in the required length and issue solved. I gotta be missing something? Beautiful bike by the way.
The bolts would have to be the same grade for sure for integrity and they are not a standard size - thought about that one as well... I no longer have this bike. I now have a 2021 HD sport glide and a 2021 HD road king special. More power less drama. :)
