    I've been fasting 20-21 hrs/day for the past two months on a vegan diet and I've lost at least 5kg of FAT (goodbye love handles & spare tire, lol) and I feel better than ever. There are caveats, like low energy (due to digesting all that food) for about 4 hours after feasting, and getting up a couple hours earlier to feast before heading to work. But the benefits far out weight those challenges. After the low energy period I begin to feel amazing, and no hunger until the next feast - it's probably that glucagon working. Meal #1 is quinoa based breakfast, #2 is a lentil & quinoa chili with yam & mixed veggies, #3 is a cruciferous salad with chickpeas and apple cider vinegar (Bragg's). If only I knew this a few decades ago.

      So you eat these meals in the same 3/4 hour window? And how many calories are these meals combined. Just curious.

    • @thinkofwhy
      @thinkofwhy 2 года назад

      @@adrianbaker1408 In a two hour window I eat between 2200 - 2400 calories. Depends on how many Madjool dates I sneak eat when prepping breakfast meal. :) Recently I discovered that adding magnesium supplement helps me sleep better and improves my energy level. I had been taking melatonin 5g at bedtime to help me sleep, but it was keeping my a little tired during the day, so I've replace that with magnesium, for now. Plus I take selenium, zinc, C, B12 daily to make sure I'm topped up. I work a 12-13 hr shift with no break most days and feel great at the end of it. Of course, that's me. All of this could affect anyone else differently, if not negatively. I've been fasting like this for less than a year. Experiment, intelligently. I'm currently testing a vegan EPA/DHA oil.

    The best way to look at this is like a thermometer. Your body is interested in keeping the blood sugar not too high, and not too low. Insulin as a hormone is released by the pancreas to lower blood sugar, and glucagon as a hormone is released to increase it. In a healthy body those two hormones work in perfect harmony with each other, where the glucose levels constantly is kept in this narrow range.

    Excellent info, thx. I found myself overloading on food during 4- hour feeding time w 20 hours of fasting; therefore, I switched to two meals a day, very small meal at am, like berries and nuts and one large meal around 4 to 6 pm. Vegan for 17 years. Two meals work perfectly for me. Thank you! Always remarkable podcasts! Love you, guys!!! ♥️🙏🙏🌱🤗👍👍👍

    That was very interesting information about glucagon and the delayed response time of insulin.
    I am a type 2 diabetic. I don't take any medication. Instead I use diet, exercise, and intermittent fasting to control my blood sugars.
    I use the Freestyle Libre 2 monitor for 24/7 blood glucose information. I always wake up with high blood sugar so I go for a walk at 6 am until it returns to normal (about an hour).
    I only eat once or twice a day. As soon as I have finish eating I go for a walk (about an hour) which burns the blood sugar until the insulin kicks in. That way I never get a large sugar spike.
    I am currently eating low-carb vegetarian but I plan to go vegan plant-based to see if it will normalize the insulin/glucagon response. I am concerned about the increase in carbs but I guess I can walk more until the vegan diet fixes the blood sugar spikes.

      @John My case is pretty similar to yours except I'm mostly WFPB (6 days a week sometimes more) and I'm on minimum dose of metformin. It was the last thing I tried in my 10+ years of diabetes as carb based diet seemed so counter-intuitive. Never thought it would work but I went from fasting 8+mmol to 5.2 in just 3 weeks. I'm still struggling with high levels upon waking up and had been focusing on that lately. I found that mixed macro meals have a big negative impact in agreement with the video but I also have been monitoring my sleep quality. I have a feeling that I kind of pinned it down for the last week: 0 added fat (including plant based) day before and a high sleep score has been a reliable predictor of low glucose levels upon waking up. I use a smart watch for this and it has been very helpful establishing better sleep.

      I'm also wearing a CGM and it's amazing to notice how much a walk after a meal helps regulate blood sugar. Even if I cannot walk right after a meal, lunch for example and only will walk at the end of the day, It does the trick.
      Exercising is even more important than I thought for healthy metabolism tbh and it really doesn't have to be that intense.

      Scott, they are very into low fat to massively reduce your intake cholesterol and all fats in order to massively reduce your risk of poor circulation (including stroke, heart failure and Alzheimer’s) versus the concept of a vegan keto diet which still focuses on losing weight (which you will still do on a ‘vegan eating’) without stuffing up your organs in the 2+ year term… (a keto diet will certainly keep one’s finger prick sugar level down BUT it will NOT help your pancreas to HEAL - which a low fat, plant only diet has been shown to be very successful doing in the long term; one just has to be careful about not eating processed veggie junk food for the first few weeks and to do a controlled transition). Personally, being South African, I have been horrified over the past few years to have seen the keto phase sweep the country - and ALL of my friends and acquaintances who have followed a strict keto diet for at least two years are now dealing with MAJOR health issues, especially those with Type 2. (Great finger prick blood sugar BUT still going blind, and having foot amputations etc). Yes, it is horrendous but quietly happening while the YT keto fanatics still blithely fob off high fat intake diets as fantastic and real research results showing high fat diets’ massive detrimental impact on one’s gut health, the circulatory system and the brain, are being ignored.

I don't like the idea of keto never could stick to it and I think it's difficult anyway on vegan diet because chickpeas and lentils are higher carbs and I didn't want to give them up.

    Unfortunately, most of the people I know with type 2 diabetes or who are pre-diabetic are in their eighties, and their attitude is that they would rather die than give up the addictions that are killing them.
