I was 21 when this came out and already a rabid Zep fan, having all the albums on vinyl. But this release spurred me to get it, being my first CDs, and my first CD player. I went to a nearby mall, hit the record store and bought this box set, and with that under my arm, hit the Sony store a few doors down and bought a 5-disc carousel CD player. After getting home and setting it up, I loaded all four discs and hit play. That was a good afternoon!

Brief follow up: those two purchases probably constituted a sizable chunk of my bi-weekly paycheck as an apprentice electrician at the time, though there was almost certainly enough left over to pick up a case of beer, amongst other things, on the journey home. Did I mention it was a good afternoon?🙂

When the "pizza box" came out, I was 19 and I was only familiar with 1/2 of Zep's material. My friend worked at the local mall and got a discount for himself. It felt like a clandestine drug deal when I gave him the money in the car to go and bring me the treasure. I still continue to enjoy it. Loved how the order was mixed up because it gave the listener multiple surprises. No guessing what would happen next, unless you read the tracklisting.

This is where Zeppelin began for me. I remember being 10 years old and seeing that TV commercial on MTV all the time, I knew their names before I had heard the songs. Then when I was 14, around the time of unleded, I got the poor man's remaster from a pawn shop. Then my dad made me a tape of LZI and no quarter, that LZI side convinced me to play guitar.

I was 14 when the box set came out but finances and a recession prevented me from getting it. Luckily a friend of mine who was in my Guitar Ensemble class my Freshman Year of High School being 1990/91 made me a dub of the box set on FOUR 90 Minute cassettes. Plus I had mastered playing the drums by then and in my guitar class I played with Seniors who introduced me to Zep bootlegs and we called ourselves Band of Joy and they taught me some of the live arrangements and the fact I played like a cross between John Bonham and Neil Peart of Rush (and looked like the short haired/clean shaven version of Neil from 1987 forward) and I wish I still had the recordings we did on stage at my High School. I remember the first time we played The Rover/Sick Again and at the sudden stop my drumsticks flew out of my hands and we started laughing and then I had to start again and played without fail.

I remember getting the LZ Boxed Set for Christmas the first year it was released. ‘91 ??
I was so excited because of “Traveling Riverside Blues” and “Hey Hey What can I do”
My dad bought me LZ 1,2 & 4 CDs in 1987 at age 15.
Then I later bought PG, HotH, 3, Presence, ITTOD, coda in that order over the next 3 years.
In HIgh School certain people thought I was weird because LZ was pretty much all I listened to.
My dad had bought LZ1 in 1969 (he was 17 or 18). I always liked his story about buying it from the album rack simply because all 4 guys on the back of the cover had long hair. He gets it home and half way through Good Times Bad Times he stops it to go call all of his friends. 3-4 of his friends come over and they’re all absolutely blown away by LZ1. The heaviest music they’d ever heard. Good thing they had long hair. Oddly enough my dad didn’t really get into the next 8 albums so much. I remember by 1988-89 he had my double cassette Physical Graffiti and he loved The Rover and The Wanton Song.
Seeing that orange boxed set cover stirred some Zeppelin memories I guess.

It came out late October 1990. Was put on display in every record store during the Christmas shopping season. Was 15 at the time; only thing folks my age bought was The Simpons Sing The Blues, Vanilla Ice's To The Extreme and Heart's Brigade.
I got Rush's ATWAS and Jimi Hendrix Concerts, both on cassette. Why do I remember this so well? Had Christmas break off school, girlfriend's folks were at work all day, so we got it down and she finally started making some real girl butter, now referred to as "grool".

It's a big mixture of the right stuff, artwork is good and by the time all the other compilations came out, I already had that stuff on their original albums...the 2014/2015 edition are exception because of the extra content. But, the Orange Box is my Zep-mix go to after all this time. Rock on.

I got this box set mainly because of the booklet that came with it. I already had every Zep album (many times over and many forms...CD, album, cassettes).....what it proved to those who cared back then.....was Zep was the greatest band ever. Back then, you had your AC/DC camp, your Floyd camp, your Kiss camp, etc. etc. etc. etc.
That box set was 4 greatest hits CDs. No other rock band could do that.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories My best friend was into AC/DC, I was into Zep. We argued all the time!
But back then, it was more of an Angus vs Eddie vs Page vs (fill in the blank) for your favorite guitarist. The "guitar god" was a very big thing in the 70s and 80s. Hard to be a supergroup without one of those gods. Riffs ruled. And then the glam bands came with tons and tons of incredible shredders....far too many to list. I mean a TON of them. Plus all the Plant clones, singing so high pitched that dogs howled.
You would have loved it back then, judging by your outstanding playing now! You did right by putting down the video games and picking up the guitar. I wish I did that!

This episode is hitting on my first introduction to Led Zeppelin. That TV commercial for the box set really served as my own personal preview of what I would discover a short while later. It ran pretty heavily for a period of at least 6 months, so whenever it popped on, even if I wasn't looking at the TV but just hearing it, I instantly knew what the commercial was for before the "LED ZEPPELIN IS BACK" line.
Initially I wasn't too keen on discovering Led Zeppelin for myself, but a couple of things changed that. First, a friend I made in my sophomore year of high school was a big fan of metal, but he was also a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan. At the time, I had recently discovered Bad Company, and he would make fun of me for liking such a "soft" band up until I showed him my copy of their debut album, and he noticed the Swan Song label. Shortly after that, he purchased the Led Zeppelin box set and was reading the booklet and noticed mentions of Bad Company in it. His teasing about me liking the band ceased after that.
The second thing that really spurred my interest was in the fact that it was essentially forbidden music in my household. Whenever the LZ box set commercial ran, my parents also expressed a sigh of disapproval about it. I grew up in a strict Baptist church and attended the private school, and listening to rock music was strictly forbidden. Since I was well into my rebellious phase of my teenage years, naturally that made me want to seek out stuff that was forbidden to see for myself what all the fuss was about. What was an even bigger push, though, was due to the environment I grew up in, my parents made sure to expose me to plenty of Fundamentalist Christian material on the dangers of rock music, which in my case consisted of several books and documentary videos that I watched both at home and at school. Naturally, Led Zeppelin was one of the most prominent groups featured in all of them, as they pretty much hit all of the main categories of why good little Christians shouldn't listen to rock music: sex, drugs, and plenty of satanism. Man, those videos introduced me to all kinds of good music....
Anyway, sorry for this length, rambling comment. This episode certain brings back some old memories, and it looks like the next one is going to kick them into full gear. Excellent work as always!

Nowadays I have a giant LZ I cover poster framed in my bedroom, and a Jimmy Page 1975 Earl’s Court framed shot on my favorite guitarists wall in my living room. I don’t know how my wife puts up with me! 😂
Anyways back on topic, as I said I had the set, and it was one that I loved. Even though I had the studio albums, and Coda, there was just something about putting that set on late in the middle of the night during the Summer time while I played Super Mario World in my room. Great times indeed.
I can’t wait for the next video, sir! Thanks again for these wonderful documentaries on one of my top 5 favorite bands ever!!!

Another excellent episode with the signature JCM, the master craftsman. I must confess to you that I don't usually buy many albums, I have a great collection of Zeppelin stuff but they are copies. My late uncle, who was a sound engineer, used all his extensive experience and perfect equipment to reproduce all my father's albums on CDs and gave them to me - but he made me promise that I would never make another copy these CDs and I never broke the promise. My dad has always been a compulsive consumer of Zeppelin stuff, from albums to t-shirts, posters, books, everything! He has a veritable fortune in band-related items (well… he lost a lot of t-shirts to a certain Zeppmaniac daughter…) 😂 thanks for this interesting chapter in music history! Take care, see ya 😊
(I have fun seeing Plant’s face when JPJ says “also thanks to my friends for finally remembering my phone number” 😂 his expression is so funny, looks embarrassed, angry, amused, like “I’ll hit you later Jonesy!” 🤣

I got the 4 CD box that Christmas, I was 10 and just getting into them. I was getting more into music and playing the drums, I used to play along to LZ a lot. Your take on Disc 3 is right on, I played along to that one the most. Good pacing for breathers, water breaks, etc. I always thought it was weird to put Dancing Days in the middle too. As far as Disc 2, i hate the quick fade out on Hey Hey. I' think its an alright lil song, but I like how it falls apart at the end a little bit, for me that was part of its charm. Hard to believe watching Jimmy in 1990 saying he was 2/3rds finished with his "next" solo album. Now, it's 33 years later, where is it at? It just seems like he wasted so much time and opportunities to get back on stage on some level. He could of handled Zep business, and still been actively creating new music. I mean he finished those Zep remasters approximately 7 years ago. And, the reunion concert was 16 years ago!

Spot-on 👏 I keep saying this to a lot of people. Whenever he's asked about a new solo album or his solo career he'll usually give some long-winded and nondescript excuse about it whilst saying that he's been busy with some Zeppelin reissues or some book or something. It really doesn't hold any water as an excuse. The Rolling Stones, the Who, ex-Beatles and ex-Floyd members (others of course) ALL manage to put out new (or fairly new) music and tour whilst putting out retrospective archival releases from the past at the same time.

I wanted that set but couldn't afford it at ther time, a friend of mine bought it so I recorded it onto some TDK SAX Chrome cassettes. I could never get enough of Traveling Riverside Blues, and Hey Hey What Can I do.........Then a few years later (and I hope you cover this set), a new box set came out with ALL the studio albums, and on the Coda album was some extra tracks, one of which is Baby come on Home ( I love this song and its a great recording), the rest are Hey Hey what can I do, Traveling, and White Summer.
It came in a cube type box, was called The Complete Sutdio recordings, there were five books with the CD's, each Book has two albums except for Physical Graffiti which has one (double album). The out-takes at the end of In my Time of dying were there, and the other out-takes before Black Country woman which were all missing on previous CD releases. They were completely remastered, I think they are actually the best that were done. All the artwork of the original albums were in those books. There was also a 6th booklet with some pcitures and a story of Zeppelin....
I am sure this was released in 1993. I still have it, in mint condition, I am sure it was 1993 when my ex-wife bought it for me for Christmas.....

The only things that I didn't like about the '87 Physical Graffitti CD were the print of the cover on the jewel case cover (I guess this was the problem with the design of the double cases, they were wider than most album covers) and that fact that the end of In My Time of Dying got cut off

As a big Zep fan, I did not jump in on this CD set. But I don't blame others that did. A friend of mine got to know the owner of a CD shoppe, and the owner let him purchase and take home the boxed set the night before the next day's official release.
"The Rover" was my favorite song from PG from the get go, in 1975. I was amused that this song did not make it into the this first boxed set.
I eventually got the 3 CD compilation from Time-Warner, and then later the "LZ Complete" Boxed set.
Looking back, the big double jewel case CD containers for releases like PG and TSRTS were all just excess to me. Later, the CD mfgrs changed and began putting 2-Disc sets in a case or holder that was about the size of an original single CD case.
At the time Zeppelin 4-CD set came out, there were lots of other boxed sets, with an album sized booklet that were being released. Or maybe Zep was the first one, I can't remember.

Reminded of why I don't miss MTV News & Kurt Loder; his delivery of "...jam on the Yardbirds classic cover of THE Train Kept A Rollin" nearly sucked any enthusiasm I have for that song; at least there's still "Stroll On" from the Blow-Up soundtrack.

I had the 4 cassette box set. Loved it. Unfortunately, it was left behind with the house that my ex took in our divorce. She probably jut tossed it.

Another great idea for another great JCM LZ documentary - bravo
I recall the Crop Circles release. MTV was all over it.
A whole weekend with TRSB and TYG videos
They did a wonderful sequencing of songs - especially the HotH, PG disc 3
You are right on about Disc 4
Nice to hear Hey Hey What Can I Do in the place it deserved
The LZii was rest of the songs cds were lackluster in comparison
You can get them inexpensively in good shape for reasonable prices

Reserved my box set , picked it up on release day, traded it to cd store owner for the full box set when it was released, In retrospect not sure if it was the right thing to do, Still have it in mint condition. I guess I really wanted it and money was tight with a little one in the house.

If it's mint condition, it's worth keeping, congrats for that, it's quite hard to preserve records! Thank you for watching! Episode 3 and 4 are out now. Stay tuned for Episode 5 Premieres July 29th.

I still love this box set mainly for the shift in context thanks to the fluidity within the very lose and gradual and chronology. Even here I find that Jose once more puts his unique twist on the running order by introducing the logic behind it that I’d not spotted. I still prefer both the box and the 2CD “Remasters“ versions over “Mothership”. I remember being so excited and switched on when this project dropped, but I certainly have learnt some more here which is only to be expected from JCM.
One trivial point; Jimmy saying he’d not written with Robert for 10 years. Jose didn’t they write “The Only One” on “Outrider”?

Sorry i hadn't responded to your message yet, it's been crazy here hehe. Mothership is a horrendus product, no question. Thank You so much for watching this one Paul. You are RIGHT on The Only One, i think Jimmy believes they "didn't write" it because he had everything pretty much set, but yes, Robert contributed his parts and the record has a Page/Plant credit so yeah, Jimmy got his facts mixed up!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories yeah I admit I liked the Coverdale/Page album, but it was a little too polished. It was the material that I wish Plant/Page/ and JPJ would have made if that makes sense lol. I guess the best thing that came out of it was that it got Page and Plant back together. Thanks for making these. Cheers
