Great video. Here's some more context for Zep fans who aren't familiar. Coverdale and Plant were actually pretty good mates up until around the mid 1980's. Plant would attend early 80's Whitesnake concerts, sometimes with his daughter Carmen. There was ZERO beef between the two men until the hugely successful self titled Whitesnake 1987 album. Once Coverdale's band hit the stratosphere with a single Zeppelin-esque track in Still of the Night, Plant did a 180 turn on his former friend. If you read interviews with Coverdale you can see how hurt he was by Robert turning on him like that. Coverdale has even tried to reach out and mend the relationship (even though the "feud" was entirely on Robert's side). I don't think Plant has ever been interested. As someone pointed out, Robert can be kind of miserable at times (as Page found out to his dismay in 1999 when Plant suddenly abandoned their world tour). No, Coverdale isn't innocent and ambition likely caused him to extend his voice beyond where it should have been and get uncomfortably close to Robert. It worked financially but it cost him his credibility. For that DC made his own bed. One post script of this is Page and Coverdale have maintained a friendship over 30 years despite what happened around this time. Page's manager at the time, Brian Goode, was actively working against the Coverdale Page partnership. Page fired him shortly before allowing Robert's manager Curbishley to take over in 94. In fact, Goode was basically incompetent and made MANY mistakes in managing Page from 1988-94.
Thanks for the extra info. As someone born in 1981 I never got the DC as a Plant clone argument. I never mistook one for the other. Also, Plant clearly wanted to get away from hard rock, so I never understood his clear jealousy at DC other than record sales.
@@adamwatson6916 Oh absolutely. You're 100% correct. Steve Gorman in his book says that Page was still heavily drinking on the 1999-00 Page/Crowes cycle. After Page hurt his back on the 00 Page Crowes tour, Crowes manager Pete Angelus sent Page to a back doctor in LA and Gorman said Page had notably stopped drinking. After the tour was cancelled and Page got his back surgery he sobered up. Jimmy suffers from terrible stage fright and I'm convinced this is a contributing factor in why he hasn't toured since 2000. JP was a big self-medicator. Page is 100% a co-reason why the Page Plant thing ended. There's an interview on RUclips from 1994 on the Australian TV show Denton where Page is clearly hammered out of his mind. It's sad to watch. Also Walking Into Clarksdale was a huge financial disappointment. Whatever people wrongly "think" Coverdale Page did in terms of sales, Walking Into Clarksdale actually did. The least selling studio album Page and Plant had ever been involved in together. The public sniffed out the half-assed songs and while the tour was great, the reality was after the 1994-96 era the partnership wasn't creatively viable. Also it was really Jimmy Page in Robert Plant's band.

I remember seeing plant in concert in ‘93. I was a kid and it was my first ever real concert. But I was thinking how old plant was back then. Now that I look back, plant wasn’t even 50 yet and arguably in his prime still. The relevance of time always fascinates me. I thought the same about the stones when I saw the voodoo lounge show. And we all know they will go forever.
Fate of Nations was the genesis of Robert Plant's modern sound and stage presence. I'm surprised he doesn't perform more tracks from the record during his last few tours.
Like FM said, the fact Robert does not perform tracks from Fate of Nations that often says a lot, he knows. It hurt him in a very unexpected way and hey, having 25 musicians on your album is quite the studio bill....
'93 had some *excellent* & very underrated hard rock albums in a time known for grunge. Coverdale/Page, Retro Active (Def Leppard), Games People Play (Pink Cream 69), Pull (Winger), Arcade, Blackfish, Mood Swings (Harem Scarem), Tell The Truth (Billy Squire)... These have songs that are among the best I've ever heard from those involved. 1993 is what I consider to be the tail end of the traditional melodic "blues based" rock era that began in earnest in 1964, seeing its last sizable wave of hits this year (also the last year before *many* rock bands cut their hair for some reason). The summer of '93 would've been a great time to catch as many bands as you can playing.

And yet another post of me reliving my high school years. 1993 was a turning point for me, in that discovering Led Zeppelin the previous year made a whole lot of other music make sense to me. I hated grunge when I first heard it and couldn't stand Nirvana or Soundgarden, but after discovering Led Zeppelin something just clicked in me and I couldn't get enough of it. Same goes for other alt-rock at the time, including Butthole Surfers, who would go on to become one of my favorites. Speaking of which, they owe a lot of their commercial success to JPJ, who really gave their songs more structure than they previously had. Pre-Independent Worm Saloon they were mostly about chaos, but JPJ helped bring them just the right amount of order to make their tunes a bit more friendly to the ears. They, in turn, I think influenced JPJ, but I'm sure we'll get to that before the end of this series. Next ep, though, I'm sure is gonna be a banger! BTW, I had Led Zeppelin Box Set #2, even though I never got the first one. It was all I could afford to buy at once on my meager part-time job salary from working at a sub shop. My best friend later bought the complete studio recordings box set, though, which we both listened to quite heavily.
I hated grunge too, it was classic rock for me. Most my peers love grunge and the cover band scene is hard right now as i don't like the music lol. Very much enjoyed this installment, Jose. The C/P collaboration had some high points but most of all it put enough pressure on Plant to finally agree to your and record with Jimmy again. The '94-'98 run with Page/Plant was memorable and produced outstanding musical moments. It's unfortunate the Diva Robert decided to leave Jimmy at the altar after 1998, just to "prove" he didn't need him.
You're right 1000%, Coverdale was a pivotal force in getting Plant's management to realized how the score REALLY looked like. Going into the Page/Plant project is a bit overwhelming for me right now lol, i am thinking how should i present it. So many shows to analyze, talk about...wish me luck in working this out hehe. Robert Plant....I get his reluctance to get back with Page, but then keep your trap shut and keep your jealousy in check when Page and Coverdale decide team up. You clearly didn't want to get together with Page, so why let it bother you? His childish comments in the press around this time are just a smidge on the immature and bitter side.

Beautifully made once again and a riveting watch. It was nice to hear Innes Siburn get a mention. I knew him long before his work with Robert Plant and after too. He enjoyed his time with Plant and told me a nice story about Robert regarding the two of them and Jimmy. He is a wonderful and highly gifted jazz and blues player. I love the serious professionalism you employ, these are not “fan boy” documentaries and you don’t shy away from the uglier aspects such as the vile sexism of Robert Plant. This is where we have to sometimes separate the artists work from the person. I guess no one is perfect but I do know that Robert is the one I’d least like to meet. Good also to see the end of the episode today as for me it was abruptly cut off yesterday with a take down notice.

One of them playing these delicious jazz chords all night, the other one was Innis who was improvising. Everyone knew him and I was introduced to him. He was the only amateur guitar player I’ve ever seen whereby I could say with no doubt “he will make his living playing the guitar “. I ran into him now and again, and a few years later, a friend of mine told me he was playing with Robert Plant. I last saw him in a pub playing as The Innes Siburn Blues Explosion post Robert Plant. During a break he came over and sat down with me. I asked him about Robert and he had nothing but good things to say about him. On one date Robert pre-warned him that Jimmy Page would be joining them for the encores. Innes said “shall I step down then?” to which Robert replied, “no man, this is YOUR gig”. So he was stood on stage that night playing “Rock n Roll” and “Whole Lotta Love” and in front of him he could see the backs of Page & Plant! I asked how it felt and he said that all he could think was “how did I get here?”

We were both from the West Country in the UK but I’ve recently moved to the South East. He’s a lovely guy, pity he hasn’t been able to break through to the top level in his own right. He’s the most gifted player I’ve ever met. Just before Robert Plant he was a significant name on the British Blues scene. I’m glad though that he got named and thanked on “66 To Timbuktu”.

I'll be honest, editing and researching 1993 was quite a challenge, so much going on, so much footage, i had to be careful in what to show and what to leave out (it always hurts). Money is coming in, slowly but surely thanks to Patreon/Paypal donations that along RUclips earnings, create an income that i have confidence will grow. I'm glad you are not a fan of Mr. Jones either hahaha. Cover bands hate playing Zeppelin and i know why..."it has weird silent parts in between man, can't count that". The Firm sucked. The songs were weak, the rhythm section was completely wrong for Page…Slade is just a hard hitter , no groove and Tony Franklin was Jaco Pastorius style, bassist that did not fit. Fate of Nations and Coverdale Page are 1000 times better than The Firm.
@@dickcnormis1444 Totally agree. I'll never understand why Page allowed Slade to be the Firm's drummer. Anyway, the real purpose of the Firm was just to get Page playing and clean again. By succeeding in that, it did us all a great favour even if the music largely disappointed.

Yet another epic. After "Remaster" everyone expected Led Zeppelin reunion or at least Page and Plant collaboration. No one needed Coverdale and Page record and than the record simply didn't delivered. Page once again proved he, without a band behind him (JPJ to be exact) can't write really catchy and memorable tunes. Thank you Jose.

I just remember seeing that album in the music shop's bargain bin. In the 90's, Jimmy Page was the face of Led Zeppelin. Remember the TV commercials for the Led Zeppelin Box Set and the VH1 Legends documentary? Classic 90s Led Zeppelin!
They should have played the US but stick to mostly Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Coverdale Solo, Page Solo and COVERDALE/PAGE. That alone is enough. Led Zeppelin...maybe, David was over playing it, sorry! Thank YOU for watching this episode!

I really liked coverdale page, cuz it sounded like zep at times....and i was very excited when i heard fate of nations 1st single "calling to you", i was like yes....this is the guy that rocked my face off in led zeppelin....was kinda bummed the rest of the album wasnt like that, but still....was great. Really all of Roberts albums are ... i get that he's on a whole other level and its just now that im in my 40s that I get some of it.... still sometimes wish robert did more heavier stuff...his voice is made for it.
Wow, two episodes in one day? Fantastic! So much information, so many facts that I was unaware of, it will take me some time to digest it all lol to be honest I don't think we'll ever know the full truth about everything that happened because they always hide something. They may not lie, but they certainly omit part of the truth. There is a Japanese saying that goes “everyone has three faces: one face that we show to everyone, another face that we show to those closest to us, and the third face that we don’t show to anyone, the hidden face, the dark side that sometimes not even we know” (as a mental health professional, I completely agree). I can say that it would not be easy for any musician to work with Page or Plant, they became legends, Zeppelin was like the unicorn, whoever sang with Page would inevitably be compared to Plant, whoever played guitar with Plant would suffer the comparison with Page…besides that thing intangible called “chemistry”, which in my humble opinion, did not exist between Page/Coverdale. It looks like JPJ has escaped that curse, I was happy to see him successful, as calm and Zen as he always was in the crazy Zepp times. The reality is that most fans of the band, including myself, don't like to hear their songs performed by anyone other than Zeppelins, and in my case, I don't think anyone can take Bonham's throne. I'll calmly rewatch the videos later, excellent research and production work as always, Jose Sensei. Thank you for these enlightening episodes. See ya!

Page and Plant are cursed in the expectations of the world to BE their 70s personas i guess. Looking at David sing Zeppelin was shocking, i confirmed there was a reason i never revisited the Japanese shows before. I found some of Coverdale's comments to the audience insulting...really, i saw no justification for it! Hope you have a great week :)

I was seven yo at the time, I loved Zeppelin and Jimmy and I was shocked by it. No one criticised Jimmy but lamented what they called a “bad choice” of partnership. As far as I know, most people went to the shows to hear Jimmy Page, the ギターの神様 (Guitar no Kamisama, Guitar God). Page always was and still is much loved and respected in Japan but DC got the image scorched… Detail: sometimes I see that you are live but I can never follow you…due to time difference. While you’re having fun I’m working 😂
Marcia i personally hate when an artist disrespects the country he or she visits. It bothers me because fans show so much respect for the music the least thing a musician can do is do BE KIND. Paul McCartney was incredible when he visited my country, even learned some nice Slang in Spanish :)

I couldn’t go to see those shows it just didn’t feel right as Robert had to let his son in law play bass rather than JPJ and Michael Lee rather then Jason,like I said in another post it always had to be on Robert’s terms and the Page Plant shows sounded like I thought they would, bad karaoke just like walking into Clarksdale total shite
I remember when I first heard and saw video with JPJ and Kravitz. I pushed play and start doing other things, suddenly I thought "hey, I know that bass sound", I looked on the monitor and thought "hey, this guy looks fimiliar. Hey, It's JPJ!" :DDDDDDDDDD
good job, my only critique: im gonna say the rock landscape was changing a bit, the underground was coming up to the mainstream (or at least finally getting some coverage). I wouldnt really consider In Utero to be obscure and forgotten. It still sells regularly, I notice it making lots of "classic album" lists. And that Pearl Jam's probably one of their more tolerable; i could be wrong but I think for a few years, it held the record for most albums sold in an opening week.

WIC was just awful and you can tell that Robert only agreed to play with Page on his terms and with his son in law on bass. Michael Lee was a great drummer but IMO they should have just toured a few summer concerts as Zeppelin with Jason and JPJ and putting out a live record or if so inspired by touring to record a new album together. Robert’s ego became bigger than Zeppelin’s appeal
This Era as far as everything music goes was the beginning of the of the stagnant era that is still ongoing and hasn't seemed to have changed in like 25 years. Brit pop was a blip in the 90's but it was an overall downhill slide after this point.

Well, it was a mix of the media overexposure of the Robert Plant product (i don't mean his groupies). While Now and Zen was a hit, Manic Nirvana carried the same energy on stage, and by 1993...he took a look pause before returning with a low selling record. Audiences maybe felt Robert was at a burnout level, promoters certainly did, the venues got smaller. Kravitz on the other hand, sold 4 million records of his 1993 album. Such is life right? The insistence that only Plant should've sang Led Zeppelin material is utterly ridiculous, considering his voice was totally shot by 79-80, let alone what he sounded like in the 90s.
It's because of his style. The problem i see when other frontmen want to approach Zepp is they have no subtlety, thus why they end up looking like clowns next to the master himself, Robert Anthony Plant hehe.

On paper he should've been able to sing Kashmir and In My Time of Dying, but we see how that turned out. I've left a few comments on your channel, and I would like to make it clear that I like Robert Plant's singing a lot. He was untouchable in the late '60's and (very) early '70's. However, I equally enjoy Coverdale's singing, and while he wasn't as proficient a singer as Robert was, him being reduced as nothing but a clone is ridiculous. Their voices are totally different, even if they (as any rock singer singing in the same range) employ the same vocal techniques. I wouldn't care to hear Coverdale sing "Stairway to Heaven," just as I wouldn't care to hear Plant sing "Burn."
The only Deep Purple that Page could have covered that David sang on, that also would have made sense is Mistreated from Burn or Solder of Fortune from Stormbringer. I can’t hear Jimmy playing Burn. Sorry Page fans.

I've always felt Robert's a bit intimidated by JPJ's musicianship. He can play "any stringed instrument known to man", and Plant is fundamentally a front man. Then again Plant virtually invented the rock front man so I don't know why he gets like this. People are funny!
David Coverdale has always been a fill in. He had a few good tunes in 80s with his own band but mostly he always ended up being a stop gap for when bands lost their singer. But if you need a fill in he can do the job. He's just not that guy.
Wrong. When Gillan was first hired for Purple, Jon Lord shortly after saw Coverdale singing with The Government, and said he'd consider him for the position if Gillan didn't work out. When Coverdale was eventually recruited, it wasn't because he sounded like Gillan. Later, during the recording of Stormbringer, Blackmore wanted to recruit Coverdale for his solo project that would eventually become Rainbow. He was impressed by the fantasy lyrics Coverdale had written for the songs Burn and Stormbringer, and wanted to explore that vein more. Coverdale refused, wanting to stay with Deep Purple. When Deep Purple folded, David headed Whitesnake for nearly 15 years, refusing a position with Black Sabbath and a MK3 reunion. If you think Coverdale's voice was just a poor imitation of Plant, I can't convince you otherwise. But his work in Purple wasn't derivative of Gillan at all, nor was his work in Whitesnake and with Page derivative of Plant.

You don't have to go by my opinion of Coverdale, he's had that rep since the 70s. Everything about David Coverdale screams Robert Plant, without the success of course.

This point is wrong because he's only ever replaced a singer once, and he wrote more material in Purple in the three albums he was present for than Gillan did in the three albums he did before leaving. Only one other band considered him as a replacement, and you must've missed what I said about him being Blackmore's first choice for Rainbow. What exactly about Coverdale screams Plant? No one I've heard express your opinion actually defends it beyond, "Isn't it obvious?" No, it's not obvious; their voices sound totally different up until the early-mid 80s when Coverdale starts employing E5 and higher screams, at which point he is about as reminiscent of Plant as he is of Halford or Gillan. Coverdale was far more successful in his solo career (Whitesnake) than Plant was in his own, so I neither know what your remark at the end was about, nor why you've adopted the same tone Robert Plant himself used when talking about Coverdale.

Including having to fork over around 1/3 of the money to him. I had no interest in Page and Plant and still don’t because it was such an obvious cash grab in the wake of the Eagles endless reunion that started at that time among others (Pink Floyd, Stones). No soul.

Paying Jones a third wouldn’t have mattered if your touring as Zeppelin rather then Page and Plant they would have played as many stadiums as they wanted all over the world

Great video. Here's some more context for Zep fans who aren't familiar. Coverdale and Plant were actually pretty good mates up until around the mid 1980's. Plant would attend early 80's Whitesnake concerts, sometimes with his daughter Carmen. There was ZERO beef between the two men until the hugely successful self titled Whitesnake 1987 album. Once Coverdale's band hit the stratosphere with a single Zeppelin-esque track in Still of the Night, Plant did a 180 turn on his former friend. If you read interviews with Coverdale you can see how hurt he was by Robert turning on him like that.
Coverdale has even tried to reach out and mend the relationship (even though the "feud" was entirely on Robert's side). I don't think Plant has ever been interested. As someone pointed out, Robert can be kind of miserable at times (as Page found out to his dismay in 1999 when Plant suddenly abandoned their world tour). No, Coverdale isn't innocent and ambition likely caused him to extend his voice beyond where it should have been and get uncomfortably close to Robert. It worked financially but it cost him his credibility. For that DC made his own bed.
One post script of this is Page and Coverdale have maintained a friendship over 30 years despite what happened around this time. Page's manager at the time, Brian Goode, was actively working against the Coverdale Page partnership. Page fired him shortly before allowing Robert's manager Curbishley to take over in 94. In fact, Goode was basically incompetent and made MANY mistakes in managing Page from 1988-94.
Thanks for the extra info. As someone born in 1981 I never got the DC as a Plant clone argument. I never mistook one for the other. Also, Plant clearly wanted to get away from hard rock, so I never understood his clear jealousy at DC other than record sales.
@@adamwatson6916 Oh absolutely. You're 100% correct. Steve Gorman in his book says that Page was still heavily drinking on the 1999-00 Page/Crowes cycle. After Page hurt his back on the 00 Page Crowes tour, Crowes manager Pete Angelus sent Page to a back doctor in LA and Gorman said Page had notably stopped drinking. After the tour was cancelled and Page got his back surgery he sobered up. Jimmy suffers from terrible stage fright and I'm convinced this is a contributing factor in why he hasn't toured since 2000. JP was a big self-medicator. Page is 100% a co-reason why the Page Plant thing ended. There's an interview on RUclips from 1994 on the Australian TV show Denton where Page is clearly hammered out of his mind. It's sad to watch.
Also Walking Into Clarksdale was a huge financial disappointment. Whatever people wrongly "think" Coverdale Page did in terms of sales, Walking Into Clarksdale actually did. The least selling studio album Page and Plant had ever been involved in together. The public sniffed out the half-assed songs and while the tour was great, the reality was after the 1994-96 era the partnership wasn't creatively viable. Also it was really Jimmy Page in Robert Plant's band.

I remember seeing plant in concert in ‘93. I was a kid and it was my first ever real concert. But I was thinking how old plant was back then. Now that I look back, plant wasn’t even 50 yet and arguably in his prime still. The relevance of time always fascinates me. I thought the same about the stones when I saw the voodoo lounge show. And we all know they will go forever.
Yeah, time is an interesting thing. Looking back on these retrospectives i think a lot about THIS. Voodoo Lounge oh yes...i know man hehe.
I'm sad Fate of Nations didn't do better, for me it's Robert's best album to that point. Thanks for another well-researched video.
Fate of Nations was the genesis of Robert Plant's modern sound and stage presence. I'm surprised he doesn't perform more tracks from the record during his last few tours.

Like FM said, the fact Robert does not perform tracks from Fate of Nations that often says a lot, he knows. It hurt him in a very unexpected way and hey, having 25 musicians on your album is quite the studio bill....

'93 had some *excellent* & very underrated hard rock albums in a time known for grunge. Coverdale/Page, Retro Active (Def Leppard), Games People Play (Pink Cream 69), Pull (Winger), Arcade, Blackfish, Mood Swings (Harem Scarem), Tell The Truth (Billy Squire)... These have songs that are among the best I've ever heard from those involved.
1993 is what I consider to be the tail end of the traditional melodic "blues based" rock era that began in earnest in 1964, seeing its last sizable wave of hits this year (also the last year before *many* rock bands cut their hair for some reason). The summer of '93 would've been a great time to catch as many bands as you can playing.
Page saw this Plant tour, I read somewhere he said something like why does he need 3 guys to do what I do with one guitar?

And yet another post of me reliving my high school years. 1993 was a turning point for me, in that discovering Led Zeppelin the previous year made a whole lot of other music make sense to me. I hated grunge when I first heard it and couldn't stand Nirvana or Soundgarden, but after discovering Led Zeppelin something just clicked in me and I couldn't get enough of it. Same goes for other alt-rock at the time, including Butthole Surfers, who would go on to become one of my favorites. Speaking of which, they owe a lot of their commercial success to JPJ, who really gave their songs more structure than they previously had. Pre-Independent Worm Saloon they were mostly about chaos, but JPJ helped bring them just the right amount of order to make their tunes a bit more friendly to the ears. They, in turn, I think influenced JPJ, but I'm sure we'll get to that before the end of this series. Next ep, though, I'm sure is gonna be a banger! BTW, I had Led Zeppelin Box Set #2, even though I never got the first one. It was all I could afford to buy at once on my meager part-time job salary from working at a sub shop. My best friend later bought the complete studio recordings box set, though, which we both listened to quite heavily.
I hated grunge too, it was classic rock for me. Most my peers love grunge and the cover band scene is hard right now as i don't like the music lol. Very much enjoyed this installment, Jose. The C/P collaboration had some high points but most of all it put enough pressure on Plant to finally agree to your and record with Jimmy again. The '94-'98 run with Page/Plant was memorable and produced outstanding musical moments. It's unfortunate the Diva Robert decided to leave Jimmy at the altar after 1998, just to "prove" he didn't need him.
You're right 1000%, Coverdale was a pivotal force in getting Plant's management to realized how the score REALLY looked like. Going into the Page/Plant project is a bit overwhelming for me right now lol, i am thinking how should i present it. So many shows to analyze, talk about...wish me luck in working this out hehe. Robert Plant....I get his reluctance to get back with Page, but then keep your trap shut and keep your jealousy in check when Page and Coverdale decide team up. You clearly didn't want to get together with Page, so why let it bother you? His childish comments in the press around this time are just a smidge on the immature and bitter side.

Beautifully made once again and a riveting watch. It was nice to hear Innes Siburn get a mention. I knew him long before his work with Robert Plant and after too. He enjoyed his time with Plant and told me a nice story about Robert regarding the two of them and Jimmy. He is a wonderful and highly gifted jazz and blues player.
I love the serious professionalism you employ, these are not “fan boy” documentaries and you don’t shy away from the uglier aspects such as the vile sexism of Robert Plant. This is where we have to sometimes separate the artists work from the person. I guess no one is perfect but I do know that Robert is the one I’d least like to meet.
Good also to see the end of the episode today as for me it was abruptly cut off yesterday with a take down notice.

I first met Innes on New Year’s Eve 1981. Two guys sitting in the pub entertaining for free. One of them playing these delicious jazz chords all night, the other one was Innis who was improvising. Everyone knew him and I was introduced to him. He was the only amateur guitar player I’ve ever seen whereby I could say with no doubt “he will make his living playing the guitar “. I ran into him now and again, and a few years later, a friend of mine told me he was playing with Robert Plant. I last saw him in a pub playing as The Innes Siburn Blues Explosion post Robert Plant. During a break he came over and sat down with me. I asked him about Robert and he had nothing but good things to say about him. On one date Robert pre-warned him that Jimmy Page would be joining them for the encores. Innes said “shall I step down then?” to which Robert replied, “no man, this is YOUR gig”. So he was stood on stage that night playing “Rock n Roll” and “Whole Lotta Love” and in front of him he could see the backs of Page & Plant! I asked how it felt and he said that all he could think was “how did I get here?”

We were both from the West Country in the UK but I’ve recently moved to the South East. He’s a lovely guy, pity he hasn’t been able to break through to the top level in his own right. He’s the most gifted player I’ve ever met. Just before Robert Plant he was a significant name on the British Blues scene. I’m glad though that he got named and thanked on “66 To Timbuktu”.

I'll be honest, editing and researching 1993 was quite a challenge, so much going on, so much footage, i had to be careful in what to show and what to leave out (it always hurts). Money is coming in, slowly but surely thanks to Patreon/Paypal donations that along RUclips earnings, create an income that i have confidence will grow. I'm glad you are not a fan of Mr. Jones either hahaha. Cover bands hate playing Zeppelin and i know why..."it has weird silent parts in between man, can't count that". The Firm sucked. The songs were weak, the rhythm section was completely wrong for Page…Slade is just a hard hitter , no groove and Tony Franklin was Jaco Pastorius style, bassist that did not fit. Fate of Nations and Coverdale Page are 1000 times better than The Firm.
@@dickcnormis1444 Totally agree. I'll never understand why Page allowed Slade to be the Firm's drummer. Anyway, the real purpose of the Firm was just to get Page playing and clean again. By succeeding in that, it did us all a great favour even if the music largely disappointed.
The second Firm album is a really good album. The songs and production are way better than the debut.

Yet another epic. After "Remaster" everyone expected Led Zeppelin reunion or at least Page and Plant collaboration. No one needed Coverdale and Page record and than the record simply didn't delivered. Page once again proved he, without a band behind him (JPJ to be exact) can't write really catchy and memorable tunes. Thank you Jose.

Tickets never went on sale, I was waiting for them after I knew the Japan tour was happening. So of course ticket sales were slow, there weren't any.
They should have played the US but stick to mostly Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Coverdale Solo, Page Solo and COVERDALE/PAGE. That alone is enough. Led Zeppelin...maybe, David was over playing it, sorry! Thank YOU for watching this episode!

I really liked coverdale page, cuz it sounded like zep at times....and i was very excited when i heard fate of nations 1st single "calling to you", i was like yes....this is the guy that rocked my face off in led zeppelin....was kinda bummed the rest of the album wasnt like that, but still....was great. Really all of Roberts albums are ... i get that he's on a whole other level and its just now that im in my 40s that I get some of it.... still sometimes wish robert did more heavier stuff...his voice is made for it.
Wow, two episodes in one day? Fantastic! So much information, so many facts that I was unaware of, it will take me some time to digest it all lol to be honest I don't think we'll ever know the full truth about everything that happened because they always hide something. They may not lie, but they certainly omit part of the truth. There is a Japanese saying that goes “everyone has three faces: one face that we show to everyone, another face that we show to those closest to us, and the third face that we don’t show to anyone, the hidden face, the dark side that sometimes not even we know” (as a mental health professional, I completely agree). I can say that it would not be easy for any musician to work with Page or Plant, they became legends, Zeppelin was like the unicorn, whoever sang with Page would inevitably be compared to Plant, whoever played guitar with Plant would suffer the comparison with Page…besides that thing intangible called “chemistry”, which in my humble opinion, did not exist between Page/Coverdale. It looks like JPJ has escaped that curse, I was happy to see him successful, as calm and Zen as he always was in the crazy Zepp times. The reality is that most fans of the band, including myself, don't like to hear their songs performed by anyone other than Zeppelins, and in my case, I don't think anyone can take Bonham's throne. I'll calmly rewatch the videos later, excellent research and production work as always, Jose Sensei. Thank you for these enlightening episodes. See ya!
Marcia, your comment is SPOT ON, it's fantastic. I like what you mention on the Japanese saying, so much wisdom in it. I believe JPJ escaped the curse, agree. Page and Plant are cursed in the expectations of the world to BE their 70s personas i guess. Looking at David sing Zeppelin was shocking, i confirmed there was a reason i never revisited the Japanese shows before. I found some of Coverdale's comments to the audience insulting...really, i saw no justification for it! Hope you have a great week :)

Oh dear, I never watched these shows because of the derogatory comments from those who were there. I was seven yo at the
time, I loved Zeppelin and Jimmy and I was shocked by it. No one criticised Jimmy but lamented what they called a “bad choice” of partnership. As far as I know, most people went to the shows to hear Jimmy Page, the ギターの神様 (Guitar no Kamisama, Guitar God). Page always was and still is much loved and respected in Japan but DC got the image scorched…

I couldn’t go to see those shows it just didn’t feel right as Robert had to let his son in law play bass rather than JPJ and Michael Lee rather then Jason,like I said in another post it always had to be on Robert’s terms and the Page Plant shows sounded like I thought they would, bad karaoke just like walking into Clarksdale total shite
I remember when I first heard and saw video with JPJ and Kravitz. I pushed play and start doing other things, suddenly I thought "hey, I know that bass sound", I looked on the monitor and thought "hey, this guy looks fimiliar. Hey, It's JPJ!" :DDDDDDDDDD

good job, my only critique: im gonna say the rock landscape was changing a bit, the underground was coming up to the mainstream (or at least finally getting some coverage). I wouldnt really consider In Utero to be obscure and forgotten. It still sells regularly, I notice it making lots of "classic album" lists. And that Pearl Jam's probably one of their more tolerable; i could be wrong but I think for a few years, it held the record for most albums sold in an opening week.

This Era as far as everything music goes was the beginning of the of the stagnant era that is still ongoing and hasn't seemed to have changed in like 25 years. Brit pop was a blip in the 90's but it was an overall downhill slide after this point.

Robert plant opening for Lenny Kravitz? How did that happen? Robert plant was huge in the 80s.
Well, it was a mix of the media overexposure of the Robert Plant product (i don't mean his groupies). While Now and Zen was a hit, Manic Nirvana carried the same energy on stage, and by 1993...he took a look pause before returning with a low selling record. Audiences maybe felt Robert was at a burnout level, promoters certainly did, the venues got smaller. Kravitz on the other hand, sold 4 million records of his 1993 album. Such is life right? The insistence that only Plant should've sang Led Zeppelin material is utterly ridiculous, considering his voice was totally shot by 79-80, let alone what he sounded like in the 90s.
It's because of his style. The problem i see when other frontmen want to approach Zepp is they have no subtlety, thus why they end up looking like clowns next to the master himself, Robert Anthony Plant hehe.

I've left a few comments on your channel, and I would like to make it clear that I like Robert Plant's singing a lot. He was untouchable in the late '60's and (very) early '70's. However, I equally enjoy Coverdale's singing, and while he wasn't as proficient a singer as Robert was, him being reduced as nothing but a clone is ridiculous. Their voices are totally different, even if they (as any rock singer singing in the same range) employ the same vocal techniques. I wouldn't care to hear Coverdale sing "Stairway to Heaven," just as I wouldn't care to hear Plant sing "Burn."

David Coverdale has always been a fill in. He had a few good tunes in 80s with his own band but mostly he always ended up being a stop gap for when bands lost their singer. But if you need a fill in he can do the job. He's just not that guy.

Wrong. When Gillan was first hired for Purple, Jon Lord shortly after saw Coverdale singing with The Government, and said he'd consider him for the position if Gillan didn't work out. When Coverdale was eventually recruited, it wasn't because he sounded like Gillan.
Later, during the recording of Stormbringer, Blackmore wanted to recruit Coverdale for his solo project that would eventually become Rainbow. He was impressed by the fantasy lyrics Coverdale had written for the songs Burn and Stormbringer, and wanted to explore that vein more. Coverdale refused, wanting to stay with Deep Purple.
When Deep Purple folded, David headed Whitesnake for nearly 15 years, refusing a position with Black Sabbath and a MK3 reunion.
If you think Coverdale's voice was just a poor imitation of Plant, I can't convince you otherwise. But his work in Purple wasn't derivative of Gillan at all, nor was his work in Whitesnake and with Page derivative of Plant.
@@lordfarquaad8601 you made my point for me. You just named all the bands that considered him. Which means he's never been a first choice for any band. You don't have to go by my opinion of Coverdale, he's had that rep since the 70s. Everything about David Coverdale screams Robert Plant, without the success of course.
@@ursirius4878 I haven't at all made a point for you. Your original point was that Coverdale was only ever a stop gap fill in for the bands whose singers he replaced. This point is wrong because he's only ever replaced a singer once, and he wrote more material in Purple in the three albums he was present for than Gillan did in the three albums he did before leaving. Only one other band considered him as a replacement, and you must've missed what I said about him being Blackmore's first choice for Rainbow.
What exactly about Coverdale screams Plant? No one I've heard express your opinion actually defends it beyond, "Isn't it obvious?" No, it's not obvious; their voices sound totally different up until the early-mid 80s when Coverdale starts employing E5 and higher screams, at which point he is about as reminiscent of Plant as he is of Halford or Gillan.
Coverdale was far more successful in his solo career (Whitesnake) than Plant was in his own, so I neither know what your remark at the end was about, nor why you've adopted the same tone Robert Plant himself used when talking about Coverdale.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Not taking offense, and thinking about making an effort shows your strength of character. Maybe a short course with a vocal coach who is schooled in the differences. I know you've got your hands full. Maybe others have more attention than me, and care more about all the topics. I care about the music, and some of the reasons and politics, but not the more extraneous details. You have to decide who your most important patrons and fans are, and go with that, right?

I had no interest in Page and Plant and still don’t because it was such an obvious cash grab in the wake of the Eagles endless reunion that started at that time among others (Pink Floyd, Stones). No soul.
Hey Twotontessie, 1994 is coming up, so yeah i will cover this, quite a delicate script to make because of the fan theories, interpretations and evidence presented. I hope i get my points across. 1998 was a GREAT year to have Jones you know? Paying Jones a third wouldn’t have mattered if your touring as Zeppelin rather then Page and Plant they would have played as many stadiums as they wanted all over the world
David Coverdale is clearly a better singer, songwriter and performer than Robert Plant. If you go back to their earliest material. More poetic, especially. Well, you know how former lovers are. ;)
