Guys, just a small correction, i know Derbyshire is not London, but wanted to say it was located in England. Buxton Opera House is in Derbyshire located 160 miles north of London. Thanks my fellow subscribers for pointing this out!

Great video!! Plant was always terrified that he wouldn’t live up to the years and years of hype surrounding LZ. He would barely even play LZ songs on his early solo stuff. He started to drift into obscurity so he went back to doing LZ songs. He included Page, but he wanted a scape goat in case they didn’t live up to the MASSIVE AND ENDLESS hype surrounding LZ. Justifiably so. It was VERY calculated leaving Jones out. Casual fans didn’t care, but true fans were very disappointed in how he treated Jones. He chose his ego over a brother again and again and again. When Jones said “thanks for remembering my number” he confirmed what we all knew. He hurt Jones deeply.

Yeah, i don't think it was "by accident". I wish Robert Plant stayed in the lane he was in 1982/1983, humble...taking it easy, not resorting to Zeppelin numbers. @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I agree 100%. This may seem crazy, but it REALLY felt that if there was EVER a real case of a band selling souls for success this may be it 😂. Plant acted as if he never wanted to play or even discuss LZ. Like he was terrified. Do you remember what Plant did with his several “solo” bands before Live Aid? He would actually take requests at his quite small venue shows. Of course everyone would yell LZ songs out, then he would laugh and play some very uncommon blues covers.
For like the entire show 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Hearing the rain song, is what made me fall in love with Led Zepplin.
The majority of people, it's stairway to heaven. But for me, it was the rain song.
That song has everything, it's magical, and there's a lot of magic in many Zepplin tracks, but the rain song is just on another level for me .

I hear you Tony, The Rain Song is taking the acoustic things to a whole new level. It's what separates Led Zeppelin from OTHER bands from that era. As much as i love Stairway of course, The Rain Song proved they could tackle serious levels of musicianship. The fact the song has NO guitar solo per se...is just genius!

Small correction - Buxton is in the middle of nowhere in Derbyshire about 200miles from London, i was lucky to be in attendance for that show.

I've read somewhere that Jonesy used to be negligent when refering to Robert Lyrics. As Robert said: "“It was always difficult to collaborate with Jonesy because he never listened to the lyrics. I used to talk about a song, and he would say, ‘Now, which song would that be?’ And I’d go, ‘You know, the one on Presence.’ And he’d say, ‘I’m sorry, I’m not familiar with the titles. What key was it in?’ I’d sigh and say, ‘I haven’t a clue, Jonesy.’”
Ask Jones to recall the song in which Plant sang, “All that glitters is gold,” and he’d likely have trouble pulling it. As Plant said, you’d have to put it in musical terms. Tell him it was the song he played five instruments on (including three recorders), and his musically encyclopedic brain would tell you it was “Stairway to Heaven.”
I also read one time ( i think referring to "Achilles last stand "recording) Jonesy saying in a snob way that the other members didn't know really what they were doing musically. Maybe they were not that close as friends, could be a matter of work

I think you are correct. MTV would have made it a Led Zeppelin reunion if Jones were on board, and they may have had more control over the product. I just wish they were more graceful with communicating with JPJ - he was essential in the Zeppelin equation. It also seems Whitesnake fans were outnumbering Zeppelin fans at that point due to Coverdale being a more current sensation. BTW, I think the eagles are ok, but I just don't see them as top dogs like the stones, beatles, pink floyd, or Zeppelin. - but I guess millions of fans prove me wrong. Another stellar episode JCM... Personally I think it was unforgivable leaving John Paul Jones out. Subsequently I can't listen to any of the music of that period and really don't rate they're interpretations of the Zep classics, instead I feel they ruined them. I did go to see them on both tours in '95 and ' 98 but really dislike the Walking into Clarksdale AND the Zep re-workings that they performed (hated what they did to Kashmir)....I don't know what Plant's beef with John Paul is, I believe it goes back further than Jones not been present at Karac's funeral. All throughout the 70's, Plant was always making snide comments about Jones in lots of Zep shows. Their was some obvious dislike there on Plant's part. I remember reading of Jones saying he can't remember the titles or lyrics to the songs, but as soon as you say what key it's in he knows what your talking about. Maybe that was Plant's gripe??? Anyway, Zep aside JCM, delighted you also love Friday night in San Francisco ( Saturday night is just as good/maybe even better) probably the greatest popular music guitar album of all time? In fact when you did Kashmir on your nylon strung guitar in your live feed, your solo parts were so Paco sounding I was absolutely blown away. Please, please, more of this please. 👋👋👋

Yes, i feel the ruined them to an extent. Now interesting to think that Bonham didn't hold the Karac Funeral grudge...it was Bonzo who got them back in 1978 really, so it has to be something else what started the Jones-Plant beef, i think i know what it was, but i could never say it on video :) I heard Saturday Night in San Francisco, it was great to listen to that "lost show". Thank you for your kind words David, i will revisit Kashmir acoustic again, you'll see. Stay tuned for the next episode that focuses on the actual show and a special surprise by Jones :)

Wow, RP is taken back by the audience's response during "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" and there's a hint of disbelief during the opening riff of "29 Palms" (like Robert saying internally, "oh, they think it's another Zeppelin tune"). But when the audience not only knows the words to "29 Palms" but belt it back louder than Robert, this wave of emotion lifts Plant. During "Goin' to California", it looks like Robert Plant is on a runner's high and even gets gitty in between lyrics.

I do believe that "Ten Years Gone" is terribly missing, no only on the CD, but on tours.
Here some trivia about the venues they did back then in Brasil: Rio's Praça da Apoteose is no less than the Sambódromo ("sambadrome"), where every year's Carnival Parade is set, with all those Samba Leagues (we call them "escolas de samba") competing like it was a World Cup. Sao Paulo's Morumbi is a soccer stadium that could seat 105 thousand at those times (it shrank later) and alleged 45.000 more standing on the green. We never had the precise numbers, because show's promoters used to sell way more tickets than the informed numbers, so they kept the extra money to themselves. It happened on Queen's 1981 show, when producers informed authorities and the band's personnel they'd be selling 120.000 tickets, but there was about 200.000 souls compressed into the stadium, and God only knows how it ended up with nobody seriously hurt. The "Hollywood Rock" logomark didn't refer to the place: it was a Cigarrette brand name.

@@paulhoughton5431 @marilynmeissner even in poor technical Conditions, I love John Paul Jones & and LED Zeppelin performances of kashmir. When i say i prefer page & plant version is not because a possible Jones work lack of quality. On the contrary, Jones keyboard is magistral always. But even being the Genius he is, he emulates a eastern orquestra in his original arranjment. As a consequence hearing a orquestra playing kashmir is to hear what Heard on his mind when creating kashmir keyboard part, and probably closer to his idea, cause he hás a orquestral musical mind. And of course the page plant version is not a tribute because was conceived and performed by themselves with a luxurious help of the orquestra. It would be a tribute If It played by me or other musicians ( as in Encomium). Zep music is só rich musically and formally speaking that allows other aproaches which eventuallly expands the original. The JPJ issue seemed to be easily forgotten? Of course that would have seemed too much like a full Zep reunion and after hearing things like “sometimes it was difficult to work with Jonesy” and looking at most song credits, Page & Plant sounded cooler and was more played down but crucially rang a bell with fans who’d studied the old album sleeves for song credits, Lennon & Mcartney would have done this had Lennon not died…

Hi Jose 👋 what’s up? Another excellent work with the trademark JCM 😁 honestly speaking, I don't usually get too attached to the adventures of the duo Page/Plant…they are half of my heart but a half doesn't make a whole, if you know what I mean. I miss Jonesy and especially Bonzo. P&P were in good company but…it was impossible to have Bonham but why not Jones? After all, he is alive and continues to be an excellent musician. I know that from a certain time on, JPJ didn't feel very comfortable with the ravings of the boys at the time of Zepp, he even stayed in different hotels but even so, a little bit of the dirt spilled over on him 😂 anyway, they had their reasons but I have I'm sure if Jonesy was with them, the success would be much, much bigger and the shows would be stellar. I watch the stuffs Jimmy did with other people because Jimmy is Jimmy, he's my most beloved guitar player and I follow with interest what JPJ is doing but nothing will ever be like it was back when there was a unicorn called Led Zeppelin. Interesting to know that you are Latino, I lived in Brazil for three years and one year in Peru, I am fluent in Portuguese and speak reasonably Spanish. I lived in Brazil when Page had a house there but I was a teenager so my dad never allowed me to get close to him 😂 “when you're an adult it's fine but not now!” he said (I met Jimmy in person only in 2014) my dad also lived in Argentina, but I went back to Japan because I was tired of studying with tutors. Btw, there are some fun stories about Jimmy in those years that he had a home in Brazil... Jose, I'm looking forward to seeing what the surprise is in the next episode... about Jonesy. Thank you, for now! 😊

I saw the Unledded Tour in Dallas. I didn't think much of it, and I never saw another show.
The volume level, the sound pressure level that I heard, in the balcony was less, than what I regularly achieved when I listened to Rock music in my home. I guess I've seen too many Led Zeppelin shows, and expect Led Zeppelin songs to be performed 'loud'.
The Biggest disappointment for me was "Kashmir." My disappoint comes from comparing the P&P performance, to what I heard LZ perform in 1977. The P&P performance was "Kashmir Light." That did have a good effect on me, in that I left half way through "Kashmir" and beat all of the traffic out of the parking lot.
That said, I cherish the 2007 O2 performance of "Kashmir," which I consider the best dynamic recording in existence. Since there is not the quality of recording for any of Zeppelin's recordings prior, this O2 performance is the ONLY "Kashmir" I ever listen to.
It comes the closest to the power and the glory of what I experienced in 1977. I consider "Kashmir" the pinnacle of Zeppelin live, over STH, WLL, and D&C. I am glad that they chose to highlight "Kashmir" for their show in 2007. JPJ is the secret sauce, without which, make all other attempts, like P&P fall short, for me.
And finally, creatively, LZ died when John Bonham was no longer a part of the group. I respect their decision to not continue after John's death. Bonzo was the "Heart & Soul" of Led Zeppelin... their Biggest Fan, imo.

wow, you left halfway through kashmir, says it all, but hey can't blame you if you experienced the 1977 version. The 2007 version is the best dynamic recording, agree. I revisit this Kashmir as well. The part at the end where they almost went for the ascending scale but Jones realized Jimmy was not there yet and SAVED the track was awesome. Bonzo was the Heart and Engine, you're right! Thank you very much for watching Part 1. Stay tuned for the next episode that focuses on the actual show and a special surprise by Jones :)

1994 was one of the busiests years of my life. I graduated high school, got my first ever girlfriend, went on a month-long vacation to my home state, and decided to join the military, so I really wasn't up on much in the way of news, especially once my high school graduation came around. So the Unledded project hit without me hearing about it and I was quite shocked. All of a sudden I was seeing Page and Plant play songs with an Egyptian orchestra on MTV! What witchery is this? How did this happen? I got to enjoy it for all of a month before I left for Marine Corps boot camp, but I certainly didn't forget about it. After 11 weeks of boot camp, I bought the album on cassette at the PX on MCRD San Diego, and didn't even get to listen to it until a week later. Of course I enjoyed it, but it was definitely missing something with Jones' absence. And it wasn't as if Jonesy wouldn't have been up to the task, his work on that collab with Diamanda Galas was superb (although I can't stand Galas). Still, though, at that time I was much more happy with what we had than worried about what we didn't. I loved that rendition of Kashmir along with Gallow's Pole. I didn't hear their version of The Rain Song until well after the fact, and I agree, it's a shock as to why it wasn't included on the album. But overall, in retrospect Unledded really did feel more like a Plant solo project that Page just happened to play on. Walking into Clarksdale has much of the same feel, actually.

Yeah I mean I get it not having jones. It would have been a different thing all together. But page wasn’t going to pass it up. He’s been wanting and still wanting to work with Plant and play zeppelin tunes. Imop it was irresistible for Plant once he heard pages playing in the CP LP. He got his shit together and say by 96 was getting his second wind. Close to 75 level. Pages best playing post zeppelin was early 90s-‘00s. But yeah as a zep fan it would have been epic if they reunited in the 90s.

I think the very fact that they called it Un-Leded says they were trying to make it very obvious this was NOT going to be a Zep reunion,…..though like you said, the tour and the next one might say otherwise. At the time I remember thinking if they asked JPJ to come onboard they there would be the obvious push to make it a full Zep reunion that even at the time I knew how Robert would have hated that. The fact that they didn’t tell him about it and explain to him the situation is a shame though. On another note, in the following tour they did play I think pretty much every song you mentioned that was missed from the unplugged show, hey hey what can I do, in the evening, ramble on, tea for one, they even played Ten Years Gone in their amazing run in Japan in ‘95 at least once, check it out if you haven’t! (TYG is one of my personal favorite songs too ❤)

It was ultimately titled Un-ledded because the showcase Robert (only) was initially offered in September 1993 was MTV Unplugged. Robert invited Jimmy to collaborate with him, and in doing so the project evolved into No Quarter: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant: Un-Ledded. I'll leave it to fans to speculate if No Quarter has a double-meaning alluding to not calling JPJ.

  • @kev-the-windsurfer.

I welcomed unledded into my life, I grew up on Zeppelin, it was an integral part of my musical education, their music to me is familiar in a sense of like it is to be family.
So, when I hit play on that album, I knew JPJ wasn't there, however I trusted Page and Plant must have had their reasons, what was unleashed was a whole new musical texture and landscape.
I HATE the sound of Ovation acoustics so Page had some work to do to impress me, but that version of No Quarter grabbed me straight away, but not before I was taken on a whole new fresh journey through Nobodies Fault but Mine which was soooo cool, they tore it apart down to the roots of where that song came from, very well done and sitting in the key of G brought out some nice tone from Plant, and a nice standard version of Thank You which has Page asserting himself as the great rock guitar player he can be. Everything he did up this point was a bit "wiggly", a bit hit and miss, a few moments on Outrider were great but here the texture of Page and Plant together was emotional for me. That voice, that guitar.
When they hit Since I've been loving you, it was tears of joy, Page can play with huge emotion and he brought Tea for One, and I'm gonna Crawl into the SIBLY canvas, his playing is so careful and delicate, yet powerful.....
I didn't really like their new songs, but understood it was something of unfinished business for them bringing the "street" into their music from those cultures, where I did click with it was the version of Kashmir, that encapsulated everything about that eastern sound, I loved it, and still do.
As far as the omission of JPJ, we'll never know, but I feel JPJ was separating himself from the band post '77, never traveled with them or stayed with them on tour, he just turned up and played, IMO there was already a wedge between JPJ and the rest of the band.....And also, I feel we would have got something quite different and perhaps something not as "fresh", maybe Page and Plant wanted the room to explore the songs in a different light, which I feel they did so well....Who knows, its all speculation at the end of the day....
BUT, when it came to the tours, it would have been fitting to have JPJ with them, because it was pretty much 99% Zeppelin!! But they didnt and we got what we got. I was not disappointed.
Pretty cool to hear Plant singing Shake my Tree on the 1995 tour though!!

Another good one man, thanks for making it!
    Long comment coming up!
Right now I'm only up to the point of the end of the JPJ rant. Had to stop and make a comment while it's fresh on my mind.
I agree that it was very rude of those two not inviting him and they way they went about it it.
However it was actually not all that surprising when Page/Plant's collaboration was announced.
I can remember reading some magazine articles from the late 80s/early 90s where Page and (maybe) Plant kinda shit on him. I can remember specifically getting vibes that they kinda thought he was baggage compared to Bonham. Like saying something like, "yeah, he was ok. Sometimes." I remember being shocked at the time.
I am super glad he didn't do the gig tho. Would have absolutely ruined Zep for me. Unledded kinda seemed pretty goofy at the time to me as it was, and had they done it as Almost Zeppelin or something, it would have destroyed their legacy. Of course I was excited when it was announced, but when I saw it I was like, "wow, cheesy." Expecting a kick ass show reminiscent of a Zep show was too high of an expectation.
Other comment: You're right, 10 Years Gone woulda been great. Potentially better than Zep ever did it live. They coulda just done it as is on record along with the Indian stuff.....even the loud parts coulda been loud....and it woulda been really great. That tune deserves a good live rendition, although when the Crowes did it, it was pretty good. Coulda used a Bonham on drums tho!
Keep up the good work, and thanks again!

Ten Years Gone full acoustic, without this beautifull electric solo close to the end? It would be an average snoozer :DDD I understand why they didn't invated JPJ - I belive it was business decision, made ofcourse by Plant, carrere wise he got the upper hand. He was afraid that this project would become full blown reunion with tour and eventually new record. But during tour him and Page quickly realised that without songs wrote with JPJ they really got nothing so they ended up playing only LZ staff and THIS enraged JPJ, because being excluded from tours with (almost) only LZ material cost him lots and lots of money. I'm very glad that now JPJ got finally recognition he deserve - brilliant musician still musicaly relevant (TCV) in R&R world and driving force behind LZ. Thank you, Jose.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Yeah, some time ago we both agreed that JPJ saved Presence. Bonham was a genius of drums, period. His sound is so unique that you can't mistake his play with no one else whatever he was author of that particular song or not (song he recorded with McCartney is good example). JPJ work is "invisible" and he don't help himself eighter - he don't care about recognition, to the extend that for years people often thought Page and Plant were founding members of LZ, not him and Page. Yet again your review is spot on JCM. This album and the whole unplugged era was over indulgent rock star bile. I struggled to re listen to No Quarter, god knows what JPJ's thought about it? Robert over sings on just about every track. Jimmy's playing on Thank You is awful, as he could be live. At the time (94) I wondered whether they were I'll advised releasing this? Britain at the time was in the throws of an indi explosion. Bands like Blur, Oasis, Manic Street Preachers, The Wildhearts etc were kicking arse big time. No Quarter was so out of place, it was a joke really. Some of the tracks included Robert's new found Middle Eastern wail in them which frankly was just annoying. Coverdale must have thought WTF dumped for this!!
This whole exercise reminded everyone that there were four people in Led Zeppelin, two just is not good enough. I resisted watching them in 95, but finally went in 98 when Jimmy had found his chops again, for probably one of the last times. I bet you hated revisiting this album, some of it is truly cringe worthy. And this was 10 years after Spinal tap!! Keep up the great work.
