At the start of the 21st century the Riksdag, Sweden's version of the highest decision-making entity and political parliament, rejected a proposal to officially recognise Du Gamla Du Fria as the country's anthem, and the reasoning essentially boils down to the fact that Du Gamla Du Fria was chosen by the people as the country's National Anthem across a century of time, and not a political system, and that it would be preferable to keep it that way.
