- One of the lovliest Schubert songs I know of but seldom heard anywhere. An early & beautiful performance of Lieder by Gundula Janowitz, Irwin Gage accompanies very well, What a duo!!
What a duo indeed!
Schubert songs are almost impossible to rank. In one moment you can think, this is one of the loveliest he wrote, then in the next you're thinking, oh so is this one, and that one, and all those others which are some of the loveliest he wrote ... After almost seventy years of being a Schubert fan I'm still bowled over even by the works I've been familiar with for the longest time.
Lovely words and thoughts about such beauty, I have been through many changes in my listening over the years and I go back a very long way. I was at a Sec Mod school in London when I first heard Schubert lieder, at that age [, about 12] 1951/2, Our music teacher played and tried to teach us the lovely Die Forelle I knew then that this music was lovely and have never forgotten the sound of the piano playing of Mr Hunwick,
Teddyb1939 Back then, the opportunity to inspire children still existed. My love of music came from my dad's enthusiastic listening, then from learning to play piano. My mum's piano had been with her brother, but as brought back to our house for me to learn on.
My first recollection of Schubert was from vinyl lps my dad got from the library, but I particularly remember a song we sang as a class in junior school. Its name escapes me just now.
💗
Yes, Ms. Janowitz has a beautiful voice. Thanks for posting her rendition of one of Schubert's loveliest songs.
Thank you for this wonderful recording. Gundula Janowitz has the most beautiful voice - I love her pure, bell-like tones. It was an unforgettable experience attending her recital in Edinburgh.
You are very welcome and glad that you love this upload of the great lady.Lucky you seeing her recital,

Gundula is the best Schubert Lieder singer ever!
In my opinion, the best was Elisabeth Grümmer. Gundula is the second.
Top class, lovely, early Gundula Janowitz, acc Irwin Gage. So beautiful.
it is little to say this song is underrated. A piece of heaven, from a visionary with no equivalent in music, matched only by Raphael: a sample of what mankind could be... Here the slightly too-classical, slightly impersonal character of the melody still reinforces the strength of inspiration. Gundula Janowitz and the great Irwin Gage, always defenders of this almost-forgotten song, gave it a new birth ; eternal gratefulness to them!
@@antoinehazan429 well said and I certainly agree with all you say. Thanks.
My favourite singer singing my favourite Schubert song-many thanks for sharing. I also love Jussi Bjorling singing 'O Holy Night'
Two lovely recordings by great voices, glad that you loved them.Thank you.
I ran a lively fan club for Gundula in the nineties. I'm still in touch with fans, and new ones contact me from time to time. Gundula is retired now, of course.
+Vivienne Rendall
how can we join gundula fan club?
+Shonagh Mc Aulay HI Shona-I no longer run the fan club, though I am still in touch with members. Since Gundula retired-she is now 78-and there have been no new recordings or other activity-it seemed a bit pointless to go on. But it's always lovely to come across a new fan. I have articles I photocopy to send to fans, and a catalogue I compliled of all her recordings I could copy for you. I don't really 'do' RUclips, or Facebook, but prefer email or snailmail. My email address is:

if you wish to communicate at more length.
Hoping to hear from you-

... un attingimento alla bellezza così plateale non capita di certo così comunemente e tutti i giorni ! ! !
What lovely singing! Always a treat to hear her!
What a beautiful voice ... so clear and on target. Easy to listen to. My dad loved Lily Pons when she came to Rio de Janeiro. I never thought of him as musical; however .... Lily Pons. Like dad, I love the operatic soprano voice and Gundula's duet in Figaro (in the Shawshank Redemption) was extraordinary. I agree with Jerry Stevens ... a real treat to hear her.
Lovely indeed, thank you for the posting. Gabe Meruelo.
I will like to join as a new member of the Gundula fan club!
If only!!, According to the record stats this would be Gundula's first recordings of Schubert Lieder and what a first attempt it is.as you can see I love this song in particular but the whole album [33 rpm Vinyl] is a thing of beauty.I am almost moved to tears on many occasions such is the power of music.Have you heard Jussi Bjorling singing "Oh Holy Night"? such a voice and a great recording..
You are very welcome and I am really pleased that you appreciate Gundula Janowitz singing this lovely Schubert song.
So lovely,what a duo.
This is my favourite song from the LP it came out on. Irwin Gage is terrific too on this song and also all of Ellens Gesange (including but not limited to the one commonly known as "Ave Maria" with a wonderful arc right to the end. I still remember when I heard the record being played in the shop.
This is exquisite, thanx for posting
Scbubert and Strauss with Gundula is my rolemodel and suites my voice
I just wish that I had seen Gundula. I am so pleased [for you] to have seen this great lady singing. You can see by my comments, that I believe Gundula Janowitz is one of the greatest voices ever!!. Have you had a listen to another [ I believe] great voice[,on my site,] John Shirley-Quirk, singing a lovely version of Linden Lea,music by Vaughan Williams.Let me have your opinion please, thank you for connenting.
So pleased that you liked the John Shirley-Quirk recording of Linden Lea and I know that you saw Gundula Janowitz in concert, I wish I had seen her on stage,Lucky you!!
You are very welcome & thanks for the comment. There is another lovely Gundula Janowitz song in my uploads, again with Irwin Gage. Please let me know what youthink.
+Teddyb1939. I can see why you love this lied and rendition.
I agree! she may be cloned!
Gage is very good, but I think that the piano sounds too loud. This is the fault of the recording engineer, unless they insisted on a single-point microphone, where the balance cannot be manipulated. Too often, it is the other way around where the piano is too soft, especially in cello sonatas, etc.
Thanks for your comment, I love everything about this recording, your knowledge of recording is beyond mine , so accepted. This is magical.
she should be cloned,perfect
Great comment John and one of which I certainly agree.
