Hey I absolutely love this concept, I wonder if it’s possible to invert it? I’m thinking it would be an amazing concept to create an abstract character in this stylized topography style.
Long tutorials are really helpful and beneficial but when it's shorter like this one and splitted to parts it's more enjoyable as well. Anyway thank you for giving us this premium content for free ✨👌 And congrats for 💯k 🎉 Happy to be one of the first people here 😄
I am late, but congratulations on passing 100K Subscriber I remember, When I was not used to the blender the first tutorial I watched is yours "Product Animation in Blender: Phone" And literally I learned a lot with that one single video I was a beginner I knew nothing but at the end of the video I was able to make really good things. Thank you so much
Hey Derek, absolutely love this tutorial! I followed along in hopes to export a STL of my map for 3D printing. But when I do it exports the whole cube with my map hidden inside. Any tips on how to isolate that for exporting?
I have a tip you can model this in edit mode with different tools and go to top veiw and use the camera to cover the entire space of the object and bake the texture is this useful not discouraging just a tip hope it was useful you can use subdivide modifier also so make it easy also add bevel modifier
This is awesome! I learned a lot from this tutorial. One question. If I want to animate the movement to create a short video, similar to what you did at 9:30, is there an easy way to make the video loopable so that the end frame looks just like the beginning frame?
Check to make sure you're using the fast versus exact Boolean method. Also try things like recalculating normals and checking the order of your modifier stack. Hard to say exactly though let me know what you find out
@@DerekElliott Thanks man, my particular issue was happening when the cutter object (cube) and the plane were the exact same size (X,Y). Also playing with the array and solidify settings would give me some artifacts. Thanks for the response :D
Hi Derek great video!! I have a question: When I tried arraying my plane although I increased the count, it still looks like there is one layer. Can you help me fix it?
Hey! I've been trying to get this to work and I think it may be the wrong process for what I'm trying. Wondering if you could give some tips. I have a mountain rendered in blender using photogrammetry. I'm trying to create contour lines as a elevation map using this process. Would you have any tips or guide me to anywhere I can find how to do this please?
Do you know if you can do this in UE5? I'm considering downloading real-world maps and applying this unique look to them. I've a lot to learn, but I wanted to know how you might go about doing this for game dev.
No it would not happen -- on my boat animation I actually made a very long strip to avoid this. The issue can only happen when the bool calculates (like by moving the empty) so if you apply them all then any animation would be fine
Making a car takes a very long time. This might be something I tried to do eventually but there are existing courses out there and for the most part if you need a car model it makes more sense to download one
Hi there I am trying to learn houdini and blender geometry nodes system but I am finding it really hard and confusing . If I get a basic Idea of Node.Js will it help me in blendee and houdini node base Animations .
dont delete the face, that was a separate example. Subdivide the the most southern on the z axis. face to a high point. Then when you apply the displace. Make sure that you have it set on the z axis not y or x
Wow, super clever way to do the layered effect
Thanks, SS!
Just a tip: Don't use Base Color for transluscent objects. Use Volume Absorbtion instead. It's fast, looks better and much more accurate!
I'll have to try!
I always forget this one and don't know what's wrong with my material.
How do I use Volume Absorption? (I'm new to Blender)

Didn't know about this sky texture, it will be handy. Nice video as always.
Un grazie immenso anche dall' Italia. Derek you are the best!!
Thank you so much! This was exactly what I was looking for!
This was a lifesaver. had to animate some shapes and this was as useful.. just animating the height got it done !
This is such a unique way of creating the topographical look. Thanks I am definitely giving this one a go.
This is just amazing! Adore your tutorials since the one with cosmetic bottles! Thank you for your work!

hey I want to the terrain to be confined into a shape I created that resembles Canada. How would I go about? i don't need the randomize part of it
This is awesome! I learned a lot from this tutorial. One question. If I want to animate the movement to create a short video, similar to what you did at 9:30, is there an easy way to make the video loopable so that the end frame looks just like the beginning frame?
Instead of transforming the texture on an axis you can do a 360° rotation. That is the best way I found to loop procedural textures
I am having some wird boolean errors where instead of cuttng the plane it creates some random new geometry. Could you suggest a fix.
Excellent video.
same here, did you fix it?

Sounds like modifiers in wrong order or you need to adjust the offset settings

You could use your boolean object as the mountain and follow similar process but it would not be identical to what we did here

Do you think the glitching would still happen if you applied the modifiers before rendering?

Hi
Could create a tutorial for making this as a game asset?
I am not very familiar with porting these assets to games
how to make it with real world maps ? it looks awesome
you could load in a height map or something from some GIS database or something? I am not sure how, but I am sure you could do it!

at 7:11 how did you add more subdivisions I cant follow
How did you create the dark edges in the thumbnail render?
I added a second material slot that is black and set the solidify material offset to use this material
Thanks!!!
how could i export this as an .stl with only the layering of the plane? When I export I get the entire object including the square.
I think you would need to apply all the modifiers and then export the meshes

why when I'm deleting the "subdivision" and doing the subdivided on the Square is not doing anything :( ?
