  • The Jaguar XKR vs Aston Martin V8 Vantage rivalry is one which has raged on since their inception, with Top gear and many others weighing in on the debate of which car is better. So in this episode of Beards 'n Cars Rivals, I'm going to lay down 4 extremely important factors which are often overlooked in these discussions, with 2 points in favour of each of our competitors.
So with that in mind, let's dive into the debate of where you should spend your British GT car budget - either with the wings of elegance, or the leaping cat!

Great analysis here. I ultimately went with a 5.0 XKR and I can confirm it's been a very easy car to live with, and mashing the gas pedal from a stoplight never gets old.

Excellent review. The "live with" part becomes more important to me as I get older.
Here in the USA, the service/parts costs of an A-M are blood-curdling. The Jaguar isn't nearly as bad, being on par or even less than Audi, BMW, Mercedes.

Great review I currently drive a Jag XK always wanted db9... But frankly I'm thrifty when it comes to car... My XK has been one of the best running cars I've ever owned... And occasionally when something needs to get fixed it doesn't break the bank 🎉

Nice video. I own a V8 Vantage manual and I agree with your points. I have nothing on the Jag. It's a beautiful classy design. A friend owns one and it looks very easy to live with.

    Hello,
I totally agree with your reviews.
If Jaguar didn't exist, I couldn't hope financially to afford a beautiful XKR 4.2, if it had the same maintenance cost as these rivals.
After objectively if I had no budget constraint my fun factor would probably have been towards a nice DB9.
A big congratulations for your analyzes and your opinions have largely contributed to draw my choice.
I still have to compare the XKR 4.2 against the XK 5.0
ps: Please excuse in advance the spelling mistakes in English because I am not an expert

I like the automatic tranmission in Jaguars but I really do think it should have been an option to have a manual. Give people the option, those that want it can have it and those that want an auto can have that to.

I watched this with interest as am looking to purchase a new motor to replace my 350z and had narrowed it down to a z4 3.0Si Coupe, Cayman 3.4S and a 4.2 XKR, however like your almost last comment I then stumbled across the 5.0 XK and that has replaced the XKR on my short list. I like all 3, it’s becoming a decision around the rarity of the BMW vs the class of the Jag! My budget is £15k, it will be my daily but as I’m now retired it won’t be used everyday so about 6k miles a year. It will join my Alfa Spider, Saab93 convertible and Porsche 356 Speedster (recreation) so needs to be a coupe and will see lots of winter driving.

The grail for me is the AM DBS. Fell in love with it first time I watched Casino Royale but for now an 07 XKR in Botanical Green is as close as I'm getting to that. No complaints. Matches everything you stated. Best bang for buck muscle car and get's a lot of love.

This is a little bit with counter intuitive, but I actually picked my XKRs because they're simply far more rare than the Astons. I had many people with Astons in my driving groups, but I was one of only a couple people with a Jaguar and the only one with an XKR.

Having owned both these cars (4.7 Vantage- 5.0 xkr) I can say that the Aston “feels” more special, but there’s no doubt the jag is faster, cheaper and more practical. The manual on the Vantage is flawed without the racing/upgraded clutch. The Sportshift gearbox is awful, whereas the XKR’s “normal” auto is more comfortable - and in sport/dynamic mode - it’s quick enough using the paddles.
I’m an Aston geek and a Jaguar lover. They’ve both got niggles but the bork factor with the Aston is immense.
    I’d take a DBS next though 😂
The XKR won’t be going anywhere though.

I don't play GT7 i play GT6 and am particularly soft locked from getting 1st place in a Super class race with 10 laps and typically a "McLaren F1 GTR Race Car" that's it that is the soft lock, none of my current cars can come close to the thing in the race not to mention it starts in 1st and i am +20 seconds behind and always end up 2nd, was wondering in a car that can help beat that possessed car that is under 650 pp

A Decent comparison however, it seems you are missing that performance is not just speed in a straight line. Yes the Jag is fast but it isn’t a sports car. While it lacks as much punch as the XKR, the Aston is a much better handling car. And then there’s the engine and sound!
As you state near the end the db9 vs XKR would be a better match.
    *I am a Jaguar owner.

    • @HSGAutomotive

I don't find the AM to be particularly better through corners, if anything its less charismatic, as I've found all Aston Martin's to be thus far compared to the likes of Maserati's and Jaguar's. Especially with the weight savings of the aluminium X150 generation.
And if cornering is that much of a preference, you can easily buy a 4.2 XKR-S for the same prices as a decent Vantage or DB9, and as I covered in my review of that car (my favourite XK of them all) the cornering is much more tight, stiff and 911 esque with all of the existing advantages of the X150 intact

Hi how would you characterise the reliability on both ?

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  Год назад +1

Overall the Jag is a more dependable car for high mile use, and more importantly much cheaper on parts and labour as mentioned. Most of the cost on an Aston is servicing and preventative, whereas most of a Jag's cost is in smaller parts or electrical gremlins here and there. Expect an XKR to run you about a 1/3rd or less of the yearly cost or even better in some cases.

Aston- all day long. The XKR is a barge by comparison- it's too big to punt down a twisty B road- it's corpulent. The Aston is far better looking, more compact, more sports orientated. The Jag interior is awful as well- soulless- it looks like an Astra! The XK8 had a nice interior and was more compact. I've thrashed the nuts off a Vantage on a race track, and I own an XK8 as one of three classics. I'd have the Aston all day, especially over the awkward looking X150- which is inferior on looks to the XK8.
